Can you hear a clicking noise coming from the front end of your car or truck? In this video, Andy shows you how CV axles might begin to click, clank, or clack when they have problems! CV axles and driveshafts have an intricate set of moving parts that allow them to deliver power efficiently. But sometimes, the protective boot that covers the joint and contains the grease can get poked or ripped. When that happens, the joint can go dry, or get filled with dirt and sand, which can ruin the joint and make lots of nose!

May you guys please do a tutorial on how to install fog lights on a 2008 nissan sentra that does not have any
Do you ship to Canada?
Probably the happiest mechanic on UA-cam. Just loves his job.
My truck is just in the shop for new CV Axles & Hubs. I had a clicking turning hard left which escalated to a bad clucking.
The CV Axles were missing the rubber boots for two winters now.
Thanks for the informative video 👍
Close up video with detailed explanation of the issues and repair is vast, if not all, viewers want, so well done indeed!
Please do this vid again with a floor jack and jack stands so that your target audience can see how it is done without thousands of dollars of tools and commercial car lifts.
I just had our local garage replace both front axles in my 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 within the last two months. Unfortunately, last Saturday I had a complete axle failure while on the highway 20 klicks from home. I was able to limp home and get the truck into the garage on Monday. We found out that the tripod joint had failed, and the failure had nothing to do with incorrect installation as I originally thought. A brand new axle failing.. interesting. Your video is very informative and helpful, thank you.
I had a 85 ford Taurus with 150,000 miles on it and the cv axel was popping and clicking really bad but i couldn't afford to even buy a used axel so i tried something to see if it would keep it going a bit longer, i got a can of insulation foam and i filled the cv boot completely full of the foam and i let it dry over night, i ended up putting 150,000 more miles on that cv axel so it was original with now over 300,000 miles on it and it was still going with no noise, that insulation foam works really good by filling in all the loose areas and keeping the dirt out, give it a try and you will be amazed
This is the best online auto repair instruction I've seen. Very clear and easy to understand and see all the components. Nice job, thanks!
Great diagnosis scenarios, I used 1Aauto videos and parts to fix my 2000 Honda Odyssey and now going to fix up my 2009 Honda Civic CV, Struts and shocks once the weather gets better here.
I like the way you calmly explaining all the stuff about cv joints. Great video.
GOD! It is sooo much easier to work when using a lift. A jack and 2 or 4 jack stands can make the job so much harder. Thanks for sharing this.
Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It's like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. Its not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. Its not unbalances tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axl homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement and nothing helped. Axl itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. No I dont know, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didnt hit pot hole or anything. I'm driving quality highways. My car is vw golf 6 with only 110 000 km in very good shape. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I dont believe it will fix it. I will be glad for all ideas and suggestions.
Great vid. I have installed cv shafts, never took one apart. Since I am in there, I change the axle seals (I wish there was just one axle seal design and one tool). Mainly because I don't want to go back in again. You make it look so easy. Anytime I go under a car, something is seized, strut bolts, shock bushings, the cv joint itself in the way of the break caliper bolts or hub bolts etc. 5hrs to change hub, CV axle, strut to coil over. Murphy always shows up @#$# shock bushings. Don't get me started on shock bushings. Saw you video on that too.
It’s my first time here…great video.
Even I understood completely the job that was done….Not too bad for a girl that know nothing about cars.Thank you for this video.you are a great teacher
if you lift your car by the A arm you can simulate it holding its weight on the wheels and spin them freely while listening for clicking.
If you get the clicking noise, don't put this repair off. Driving in this condition for a prolonged period can cause transmission damage, or it can leave you stranded, and damage other parts. My front differential snapped and I had to find a replacement for that. It could also cause a bad accident if it goes completely while driving at high speed. Also, spend a few bucks more for original equipment. I got Motorcraft replacements for about an additional $50 total. Do noth sides at the same time. Parts and labor for the half shafts and used front differential was about $1000. It probably would have been $2500 at the dealership.
As always a well done, informative vid. It's a good time for a wheel alignment, after installing an axle.
A man who loves his job❤
Always love your guys shows, I haven't done one of these yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to now, when I need to, for now I've a big, powerful battery powered impact wrench! Thanks Fella
What is the brand of your impact wrench? Bro?
I have the clicking noises right now, and this video just came on my suggestions! Coincidence?
If you want to hate life itself, try doing a passenger side Sienna CV.
Hahaha, true
@sailor moon gamer ha! i just had to do the exact same thing in a Highlander AND use a heavy duty impact hammer.... spent 3 days with car on blocks trying to get that axle out each night after work... until I finally cut it in half
Why is it so hard? 😂😂
On that style with the c clips, if you can get a chain wrapped behind it and tug straight it usually pops wright out. Only do one side at a time.
HOLY CRAP YOU JUST REMINDED ME I DIDN’T TORQUE DOWN MY BOLTS ON MY CAR AT ALL AND I’VE BEEN DRIVING LIKE AN ASS SINCE I REFRESHED MY CONTROL ARMS
Great video. It must be nice to work on a vehicle when everything isn't all rusted.
Enjoyed your video, I have clicking sound when I turn either right or left, I will be taking it to the shop because I live in a apartment complex, really no where to do the job but now I know....good feeling to know.
I'm truly impressed that you called that a simple job, haha...
Great info vid. My question is do u need a wheel alignment after u work in any part of ur suspension?
Just replaced mine today! Thanks for the video! The inner joint was a tough one to get out with only having the car on jack stands. But that was the only hiccup! Very easy and informative video
You can repair a split boot by filling it with grease using a plunger or a used hair dye bottle, then cleaning the outer surface of the boot around the split with a good solvent, and then applying a decent quality marine sealant like Aqua Seal or Sixaflex. That's the cheap fix.
Best video about CV joint /axis on youtube! 👍
Thank you for the video,i watched a few times for visual memory
I saw a video on the same subject and the CVJ in question had a tiny split in the boot with minimal grease depletion - there was still plenty inside the boot. A test drive showed no knocking. The problem had been noticed really early. However the garage still changed the drive shaft. They didnt answer my comment which questioned their decision to change the drive shaft. Wonder why?
Greetings from Lagos Nigeria ❤
The clicking is from the combination of it being a Chevy, being in a demolition derby based on the body, and the fact that corners were cut by wasting money rebuilding the half shaft. Rebuilding the half shaft leaves metal and dirt in the joints that prematurely wears the bearing down and fails all over again. Replace the half shaft with a new one. More efficient and lasts longer
+Velvet Bear Thanks for the feedback!
good technical explanation of outer Axel CV joint issues # mostly out axel CV joint collapse & create problems #👍🇵🇰
Thanks for making this video.
Often times the replacement axles are of less quality then the OE axle. When they click it is often due to lack of grease in the joint. Removing and cleaning it thoroughly then re-greasing will remedy the issue.
NOT only subscribed due 2 quality videos but intend to purchase parts!
Remember to have the car realigned when removing any suspension parts. Thanks for the video.
I had to replace the cv axle in my 08 Lancer and the new one seems to make a clunking noise whenever I upshift or do any kind of slow and go. This was an autozone replacement axle so I would think it would be pretty decent quality.
I like Scotty but there r mechanics that r just better than him and this vid proves it.
i had a loose lug nut cluck before---good pointer
Thank you man very well explained and detail 😊
Can u also mention the causes and also if they are covered under warranty! Thanks for your work !
So what was causing the clicking noise????
It’s the joint on the wheel side of the axle
Clicking comes the ball bearings
9:28
Such an informative video, thank you! I seem to be getting intermittent clicking noise at higher speeds too as well as a humming noise when turning at very slow speeds especially when i have my foot on the brake to slow down at the same time as turning. Any ideas?
Cv axle control the brake and emergency brake, when cv axle bad , you'll notice when braking hard , then makes that clucking or cracking noice , it most likely it's the cv axle
My 2001 Honda Accord right side was making all that noise. Of course I ignored it until the entire spindle came loose on a right turn. Needless to say, I'm uber sensitive to any and all sounds not normal now. Live and learn yeah? Beside, I do all my own work now and parts are ridiculously cheap for my car.
Nice video! Great for me since I am newly learning about car maintenance. Two questions:
1. What fluid systems does the grease leak from?
2. What should be done to make sure that the new axle is properly lubricated and that the fluid systems are maintained?
Great job. Very informative. Thank you.
This video came up and tbh I’m glad I clicked on it
Would this be same labor hours/fees vs changing CV boot kit?
What truck is that you made it looking easy
If here is a beginning knock, noise due to cv-boot damage due to lost grease. Would it help to re-grease the cv-joint or not?
Very informative. Do you have or have you considered doing a video on a popping front end of an F150 ('13) once 4 wheel drive is engaged? Thanks for making repairs look easy.
can it also be a cv axle problem if the clicking happens during deceleration?
Allah the God who is one most merciful bless you a lot۔😊😊 i learn from your video a lot ،wish you
best of luck ۔thanks
Would a rear CV on an AWD car make a rotational clicking noise if it’s going bad?
mine does some knocking noise , not very loud and midly when i go from complete stop, how long can i use them like this before getting them fix?
Here is a fun question for A1 Auto's next Q and A video. What is your most sold part? IE wheel bearings, tie rod ends, etc.
Nice & in detail, pls keep it up..
Is it possible it just needs grease ?. I don't have a torn boot or grease around it
This video mostly showed the components of the joint more than how to properly remove and reinstall it
+Troy B Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
How do you find vehicles that need work done to do videos? are they employees? under impression the garage is in same building as the warehouse and corp offices. another informative video
How’s the quality of these after market parts
could u clean the bearings and cage, regrease and put back? instead of replacing ?
Great job my brother😊
*LIKE !!!* Presente en clases desde Navoyork Sonora México
Good job. I have a kia. Spectra doing the same. Thing. Only when turn. Should i change. Both bearing an axle..
how long does it take to repair, and how much should someone expect to pay?
Thanks alot for the video.
Excellent demonstration. Thumbs up
Your welcome to stop by and fix my truck for me😆
Wow very informative video! Thank you!
What if you have your car in park you got a put it in reverse and hit the gas and you hear a metal ting on the front left side one noise
Can you be needing Axel but the boot is not Ripped or does not have a hole?
I like your video on this cv Joint
But I have an oil leakage from my car after changing the zeal on driver side on Rx300 what can I do
Do we need to replace that cv joint if popping sound occured or it can be done by greasing only?
Great video, just please lower the volume while editing when using that drill!
I don’t feel confident replacing this part myself, what’s the cost and labor for replacing a cv axle?? I have a 2005 Tacoma with Rear wheel drive
Thank you for that I had a mechanic today tell me it's not my cv but the boot was ripped when I baught the truck and now 2 months later it's starting to make a little noise at acelertion and 4 wheel front drive side time wearing inside of tire thingy it's my cv.?
What if the CV Axle clicks when you jostle it with your hand while parked? No leaking from joints. No slash in boot. When driving it sounds like metal on metal, crunching, and minor vibration
Is it possible for a pebble or something to cause that noise? Noise has gone.
Will bad cv joint make noise when straight
Do you have to replace all cv joints or just the one that’s having issues ?
Hey can the cv axle make noise also when my truck is going slowly or coming to a stop?
If I turn and having a popping like noise, would that be a CV axel problem as well?
Does a CV Axle Cause loss of power in acceleration??
thanks for the ultra pro demo video!
Mines not on turns. But it goes with acceleration I KNOW I need to replace my front differential on my dodge ram though, as 4x4 during winter time is a "use only to get unstuck" situation.
Very good & detailed demonstration. Thanks for sharing
Some serious crash damage on that right front fender .. could that have damaged the CV axle?
Great job
I never saw the c clip? Did you have to remove it using a special tool? You just got behind axle with a big punch and hammered..everything else was great...just confused about how you removed c clip..
Every Honda I ever owned clicked like that. My Audi S4 never has in the 14 years that I've owned it and I've never even had to replace an axle or axle joint.
Will the truck shutter slightly while turning on take offs only? Doesn't do it when straight. Feels almost like torque converter slipping.
I WAS HAVE SAME CLICKING NOISE IN LEXUS IS-250 2008 USA SPECIFICATION LHD. IT STARTED REAR LEFT SIDE THEN ON BOTH SIDE. I SEARCHED LOT ON NET & WORKSHOP IN UAE DUBAI BUT EVERYONE FIRST UNABLE TO FIND EVERYONE RECOMMEND TO CHANGE COMPLETE REAR DIFRENTIONAL & BOTH AXIL HUB ETC. THEY ASKED $3000/+ LABOUR $:500/. I DIDN'T FOUND ANY CORRECT INFORMATION.TODAY I FOUND CORRECT PROBLEM AND JUST NOW ON 14.5.2024 SOLVED WITH JUST $:200/. IT'S REAR AXIL JV JOINT BEARING SLIP NOISE. SIMPLY EITHER GET IT REPAIRED OR CHANGE AXIL PUT USED AXIL. NOW IT'S 100% PERFECT. IT'S VERY IRRETRATING NOISE OMG.
What about the driveshaft the can also playing ing on sömu instrument too
My trucks clicking idk where it's coming from I'm changing the cv axles. I just replaced everything except the brakes and cv axles replaced the axels about 10k miles ago and idk if it's them or not sucks to not know and have to guess I hate wasting money on unneeded parts.
i have an 05 freestar,it makes that clicking noise only when i back and turn the wheel would this be the cv axle?
thanks
