I thought it was something you got done when you got new tires and that was it, a one-time thing. That's why my tires never lasted long but no one ever bothered to tell me any different, my own dad never even taught me that so once I said something, he was like well yeah, if you don't keep them balanced and rotated then they can get crooked basically and we're out and I didn't know this and the lady that worked at the tire shop said, okay will you know if you don't put oil in your car, your engine will blow up right? I thought that was so rude but I said, actually yeah I do know that because I have an oil leak so I have to do that every week. It's the crankshaft seal and you have to do the timing belt along with the water pump and the place quoted me $450 but they never said anything about the timing belt and the water pump, that's what my family mechanic told me so I don't know if that price includes everything or literally just the seal. Does that seem like a price for everything? I'm not sure but I know that I've had a water pump go out and I've had to have it replaced before and just that alone was like $300 but I've also heard that when you have a crankshaft seal oil leak, everything comes inside of a kit with a water pump, timing belt and the new seal. Wow I learn something everyday watching your videos Scotty! I have a 93 Toyota Camry with 206K on it. I've been pumping premium in it for years and years just because I thought it would get better mileage and not ping as much and have better pickup. Now that premium is over $5.00 a gallon I've been using 87 octane and the mileage actually seems to have improved. 🙄 Who knew? 🤦♀️
You forgot one system that affects fuel mileage: TIRES. If your tires are underinflated, you wear them out faster and it takes more work to turn them. More work = more fuel.
@@JesusIsKing-OfKings WRONG! In modern computerized vehicles, the engine can cut off fuel if there is low load or no load on the engine. If you stay in gear and let off the gas while the engine speed is above idle, the engine will cut off fuel. Because you are in gear, the wheels will keep turning the engine so it doesn't stall. If you are in neutral the wheels won't turn the engine, so the engine has to send fuel to maintain idle. The computer will always maximize fuel consumption and emission levels. You can't outsmart the computer.
Your Amazing man you’ve taught me a ton of new techniques! I’ve lost thousands of dollars on cars by not knowing about them. And your page sheds so much light! Your truly a blessing.. One Love and I Wish you and anyone who reads this Nothing but the Best! We need more love and less hate !
Thank you Scotty! Late comer. Not being a car person, I was shocked when my dealer wanted 80 bucks to change the air and cabin filter. Went out and bought my own for $5. SIMPLE install, AND better gas mileage. You were my impetus to do so.
This guy is awesome! I swear I could watch a documentary on the mechanics of cars with Scotty as the Narrator. Really great bloke who knows his stuff. Keep up with the great videos, mate!
I wanted to tell him I did what the picture showed and poured Coke into the gas tank. It would work seeing that your car would never run again so no more buying gas. 😊
Scotty, had a rental car yesterday - Nissan Kicks 2020. The gas mileage was horrible. Fuelled it up yesterday in the evening around 8 pm. The following day, around 11 am, the fuel indicator was at 76% already. Put regular fuel as per the rental company's guide. There is no bloody way it consumes so much fuel because i only drove around 50 km that day. Definitely something from with the car. When i noticed it driving yesterday, I immediately remembered your video. Thanks a bunch! You are GOD !
I bought an air filter at O'Reilly for my Toyota Camry. The rim of the filter was too thick for me to shut the air filter box. I took it back, and ordered the Toyota one from Amazon, and it was cheaper, and fit properly, and is OEM!
I had a similar problem on my 2016 Camry, where I bought an air filter from there and the outer rim would get caught while I'm trying to shut the filter cover. I managed to get it in there but man, it was such a freaking hassle. I'll stick to OEM from now on.
Scotty - EPA testing involves the use of Indolene as a fuel, which has a relatively high octane rating. EPA testing never exceeds 60 MPH and never uses full throttle. Interesting how the engineers work with these parameters.

seriously though. there are a lot of people in hawaii that are new from Micronesia. I have had two that came and asked me to see if I can get their new car too run problem? no gas. now you have to remember most places in Micronesia do not have roads they are tiny atolls. they may have bike or moped trails but not highways. so I put gas in for them and reset the brain and show them the the gas gauge and tell them don't let the gas go below 1/4 and I take them down the station for gas and show them how to put it in safely and walk away shaking my head.
@@skiplevesque8472 ...& then they see this thimbnail & think, "oh yes bless Saint Skip, but we now have the pro-tip!" I mean... caffeine helps YOU go, right? Right!
Modern computerized engine management systems compensate for the gradually clogging air filter but they can only compensate so much. When the filter looks dirty, replace it with a new OEM equivalent filter. Some shops have, or had, air filter testers but most air filters don't cost much so they're not worth paying $120/hour to remove, test and reinstall an used filter. Pop the lid on the filter chamber, look at it. If it's dirty put a new one in.
Hi Scotty, I am a little surprised that you did not touch on tire air pressure. I know in climates where the air temp changes regularly (Alberta, Canada), tire pressure can change 2-3 psi overnight. Anyways I thought it might be worth mentioning. Cheers Jaime

Amazing and fun video Scotty, thanks for posting it. Just want to mention you missed one cause for very low mileage that is low tire pressure. I know it fron experience living in Peru where the roads are bad and you get nails in your tires often. One tire at 19 psi instead of 24 makes a big difference. I learned it with my 82 Honda Prelude. 🙂

Oh, but Scotty, I had an old cop car; a Caprice w/ 350; I put a K&n in there and got six mpg more! I didnt believe it, so I changed it back to a paper one for a day and got way less again, so I threw paper away and put K&N back in there
Great video 📹 as always. I like how we can get better mileage with simple steps. 9 minutes and 22 seconds later I learned alot and there was great humor. Thanks 😊
I had yrs ago an Opal GT: got extra excellent gas mileage! But it had to HAVE "Ethel high test gas" and I had to put gas in & THEN take a tack & adjust the carburetor !. Loved that 2 setter car!
It's a way to LURE you to watch. But, if you think about it, people use the acidic beverage to clean battery terminals and connections.. if you prevent corrosive build up off your battery, it'll perform like a brand new one. When your electrical system is running at peak optimal performance, your ignition system will reward you with nice, sustainable fuel mileage!

🙄 Who knew? 🤦♀️
Yikes, don't even think of the money wasted or you might be upset with yourself lol
@@paulcarlin5181 ..exactly! 😅
You forgot one system that affects fuel mileage: TIRES. If your tires are underinflated, you wear them out faster and it takes more work to turn them. More work = more fuel.
Yeah there's a lot you can do to up your mileage. Accelerating down hills and limiting acceleration up hills.
Alignment is very important too
@@remington1844 ....why would you accelerate down hill? Put it in neutral so your pistons are revving at a slower rate
Facts I'm a trucker and with proper inflation I get 1.7 mpg extra.

Thank you Scotty! Late comer. Not being a car person, I was shocked when my dealer wanted 80 bucks to change the air and cabin filter. Went out and bought my own for $5. SIMPLE install, AND better gas mileage. You were my impetus to do so.
$5?? guessing they were cheapies

Who was ready to see Scotty pour some coke in his gas tank lmao 😂

This cool cat seems to know everything about vehicles! Thanks Scotty!
I don't even HAVE a car - and I love this man!

Scotty - EPA testing involves the use of Indolene as a fuel, which has a relatively high octane rating. EPA testing never exceeds 60 MPH and never uses full throttle. Interesting how the engineers work with these parameters.

Customer: No! I have coke in it.

Customer: Cuz I Trust you so much that I saw saw your video Thumbnail and straight poured coke on my little gas left on my Tank.
Scotty: OHH! Jeess! That was just the Video Thumbnail to attract Viewers on UA-cam.
Customer: Well!! now you turned a viewer into a real customer on your workshop. That means you have become more than a Mechanic.... Hmm Scotty
Send Scotty the bill.
seriously though.
there are a lot of people in hawaii that are new from Micronesia. I have had two that came and asked me to see if I can get their new car too run
problem?
no gas.
now you have to remember most places in Micronesia do not have roads they are tiny atolls. they may have bike or moped trails but not highways. so I put gas in for them and reset the brain and show them the the gas gauge and tell them don't let the gas go below 1/4 and I take them down the station for gas and show them how to put it in safely and walk away shaking my head.

This is a Classic UA-cam Channel. It has those old UA-cam vibes and I LOVE IT! Very Vintage.
You have spoken my mind.
Hi Scotty, I am a little surprised that you did not touch on tire air pressure. I know in climates where the air temp changes regularly (Alberta, Canada), tire pressure can change 2-3 psi overnight. Anyways I thought it might be worth mentioning. Cheers Jaime
Yeah, Oblama said checking air tire pressure would solve the energy crisis. remember that one 🤣

Scotty, only the experienced have the best stories. You are the man! Thanks for sharing. Love your way of keeping it real.

Why show soda being put in the gas tank, then not talk about it?
It's a way to LURE you to watch. But, if you think about it, people use the acidic beverage to clean battery terminals and connections.. if you prevent corrosive build up off your battery, it'll perform like a brand new one. When your electrical system is running at peak optimal performance, your ignition system will reward you with nice, sustainable fuel mileage!
