When you said "faff'n around" I laughed out loud, but when the lovely lady came over with the kettle, I died laughing. 600% British this video is, I love it. Thank you from The States.
So this is it. Urban sketching and watercolor. So fun to watch you Ian. The way you hold your pens and brushes amazes me. I think this is why I dont get loose paintings. I got a grip on my brush like it's going to spout wings and fly away. Thank you sir. You are the ultimate artist to learn from and I appreciate the work. You are lovely
Haha- the headphones tip! Scribbling this even without watching entire video... Aah, so sweet of the lady to offer coffee. Especially, as you wait for the paint to dry- ideal!
I love everything about this video - the plein air painting , encouraging others to try this, down to the lady who brought you a hot drink ☕️- thanks for sharing !
After being at one of your demo days at Odsa in Oswestry , it was great to watch how you work again Ian .Your an insperation to get out and sketch at such a difficult time for everyone. Stay safe .💖
Never could decide on what as a beginner to watercolour should paint but when I found Ian’s work well the vibrant colours and sketching caught my attention and interest
Wonderful. Glad someone suggested I watch this, I loved the statement about not being a water colour painter but an urban sketcher, as I really need to remember that when I am out with USK folks!
Hi Ian. I live on the Wirral too. I’ve been a water colour painter for decades, but love watching and listening to your painting videos . You have REALLY enticed me to go out and do some urban sketching. You have made me realise how many scenes can be used as subject matter, and your loose style has realy encouraged me to paint more loosely and try to match your clear fresh style. Many thanks!
I love this way of working! I’ve been struggling with watercolors, there is no really good alternative to use on location to add color (I like working with colored pencil but I’m not bringing the whole set with me, I could just see me fiddling around and losing 3 pencils in the grass each time I sit down), I love working with fineliners so I do combine the two but draw first, then add color and it somehow always disappoints me. I also struggle to let go of the idea of true to life colors, even though I’d love to use a more ‘feel’ approach. I’m definitely going to try this method!
🙂🌛hey Karin... Some time we don't realise the value of what we do...i feel the same way as you....but after i showed my paint to others, friends, family, it was so encouraging 👌😁... Let some people's around you see yours 🙂🎨... believe me you'll find deference... Hope you the best...GoOD LuCk 🎨🌛😊
That was really helpful, thanks! I’ve just taken your free demonstration of the 1939 truck lesson. Really learned a lot. Thanks for your generosity in teaching!
Thank you for sharing your process for urban sketching. I totally enjoy watching you work. I want to get out and do urban sketching myself but didn’t know where to start. This is so helpful and inspiring.
What a great video. Been a fan of Ians work for a long time but I'm really surprised at how the does it. I just imagined the pen work was done right at the start but i couldn't have been more wrong. It's always great to watch an artist at work and the seeming ease and confidence they have.
I love sketching, but I´m afraid of watercolours due to fucking it all up and having to start over again. This tutorial has given me inspiration. Thanks!
i learned a lot from this lesson 👌🎨😀 Thank you so much... Kindly if you can ..explain to us next time what tools brush pins..you're using... Thanks again, marvellous work👌🙂🧚♂️
Never tried urban sketching, and really want to try, but where to start? You laid your pens out for an outline and that just made the whole thing seen a lot simpler for me. Love Hoylake, and wirral. The kindness of the lady coming out with a hot drink is typical of the friendliness of Northern folk. Really enjoyed the informative video, thanks for sharing.
This is great mate, love your style and approach, going to have a go myself, but sure I'm going to get hung up on all sorts of aspects of it, I'm sure this has taken you years to develop as a style.
I do enjoy drawing a bit more than painting, but love doing both. So when you said you're not a painter, you're an urban sketcher, I felt like "me too!"....so I can leave behind the "rules".whew. Could you tell me though, is a brush pen a watercolor brush pen or is it a sort of magic marker? I can't really find the specific answer so I'll know what to get. Thank you for the videos!
Lets crowd source what his materials are! In a previous vid he said he uses WInsor & Newton water colours- I don't know what range tho? (Cottman?) Someone below said the brush pens look like Tombow brush pens? And anyone care to guess the fat colour pens he used for windows etc? Lovely vid though.
I’d like to do urban sketching but it’s intimidating to me. I’ve a poor sense of composition and I can’t even draw a straight line. It always ends as a mess.
Spend 2 minutes a day drawing circles, lines, squares, triangles aso. Like fill a cheap piece of printer paper completely with circles or lines, trying to get them “perfect” one at a time. It won’t take long before the things you draw start looking like the things you are trying to draw.

I agree.
Fun, passion and business mixed with vibrant colour. Thank you for your time sir.

Wow! The final work is lively. Thank you for the demonstration, and, explaining your thought process.
Loved watching this come together. AND just loved the lady with the cup of coffee. Isn't it great to see generosity like that?
I love everything about this video - the plein air painting , encouraging others to try this, down to the lady who brought you a hot drink ☕️- thanks for sharing !
I love this minimalist use of soft colors. pretty clean and fresh looking view.
After being at one of your demo days at Odsa in Oswestry , it was great to watch how you work again Ian .Your an insperation to get out and sketch at such a difficult time for everyone. Stay safe .💖

My first love is drawing and I enjoy the way you mix your media. I tend to use colored pencils in the same way you use the liners. Beautiful work!

A very nice sketch of the government road you did, Ian!
Many thanks for the excellent instruction. Please can you tell me what colours, a beginner like me would need?

Good video with excellent advice...; especially, to 'complete beginners' like me. ;-)
What brand are those brush pens. Great video thanks.
CodeNameBravo Tombow I believe
Hoylake, my childhood home.. small world eh!

Where can the Tombow blacks and greys be bought?
Ian- are using w.b. or perm ink for your fine lines?
wonderful sketching! thanks for the video. Does anybody know what brush-pens does Ian use? thanks
The pens he used in the beginning to lay out the poles and lines? Those were Tombow Brush pens.
@@jvce1800 thanks!
8:18 - nooooooo , you lucky luck B-sterd! What a lovely lady
LOVE! What paper do you use please?
If your bum is getting cold out a cushion under you.
I love this channel, thank you.

AH MAZ ING. Lol amazing Ian. 👍🏻
:)
Now this, Boris Johnson, is the true meaning of ‘creative ambiguity’!!!
why do you use hotpress instead of not paper?
👍👍👍
Ty! 🙏🏼
nice :)
Does anyone know why Ian uses 50% cotton paper? What is the difference between 50% and 100% cotton paper?
In Australia you need a hat, block out and bug spray.
Music is way too loud when he’s talking
fantastisch
