It never fails to astonish me how with real professionals a painting starts off as if a drunken chicken danced over the sheet of paper, but in the end it all becomes whole and amazing and beautiful. Just incredible. Thank you so much.
as if a drunken chicken danced over the sheet of paper That's a perfekt discription. Thank you for that. Ian's work is otally fascinating me and i could watch is for hours.
Hi Ian, when I'm teaching drawing classes, I tell my students they have to learn to get comfortable with the chaos of creating. John Cleese gave a wonderful speech a number of years back where he talks about this chaos and how most people try to get out the creating stage as quickly as possible because it's incredibly uncomfortable. But if you can learn to play around and get more comfortable during this time, wonderful things can happen that you never could have foreseen. I try to remember that when I'm doing a demo that's going sideways...it ain't always easy...grin.
What stood out to me was that water colour provides "happy accidents" and in turn we are faced with problem solving and the opportunity to adapt to the moment we are creating. Thank you for your time and passion for the arts.
I've not tried sketching out in the open yet. When you said people say to you "are you an artist? You're not very good are you?" So funny, but what I dread most. Love how the imperfections make it prefect. Thank you sharing.
I know you did this video two years ago, but I am grateful for your video, especially since I’m heading to England in a few months and am just learning to do urban sketching.
It's truly a pleasure watching you paint and draw...extraordinary talent. Thank you so much for these inspiring videos and last but not least....you are extremely witty...wonderful listening to you
Thank you for showing and talking about your process!! I just LOOOOOVE how expressive you are and free with your colour and lines. I only wish one day that I too will be free and expressive. You have a calm and soothing manner about you. I could listen and watch all day, every day. 💚
I love your style and you have such an easy way of explaining your creative thinking. You have truly inspired me to up my game with my urban sketching. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!
I have watched this video several times. Just love it. Its inviting, it gives hope in moments when I struggle with my drawing journey and it lets me try again and most important having fun. You are the best teacher ever for me. Many thanks!
Thank you very much for your feedback! The 'ugly stage' truly is a dangerous phase... but it's a great idea for a new tutorial: 'How to overcome the ugly stage!' Maybe we'll produce it.
Awesome work! I really love you're style and I enjoy watching these video's. I'm new at urban sketching and I find it really fun and relaxing because of the loose way you can draw whatever you like where ever you like.
I really love your teaching style. From the way you build up the scene to the different techniques - it's really well put together and comprihensible. Also the little recap at the end, very nice touch. And your art style is amazing as well, I love the careful but still free combination of all the different mediums. I'm absolutely gonna subscribe to your channel now :)
Fantastic, I've only just recently discovered your super channel. Great video, I'm actually venturing out for some painting tomorrow. Your video has been very useful indeed 👍👌
Thank you Ian for showing this interesting piece of artwork ! The part on the stature really demonstrates the facinating nature of watercolor ! What kind of paper are you using for this piece? It doesn't feel like watercolor paper to me!
Hi Ian I'm not a lover of the traditional watercolour cold press papers and find cartridge paper far more exciting though not really stable enough for heavy water use. What paper do you use and recommend as I know you use a smooth (hot press) paper. Any contribution to this question happily accepted. Bx

What a gift. Thank you for sharing by our process. I’m in awe of your talent.
There isn’t one thing I don’t like about this - from artist to finished picture, and everything in between. Wonderful.
Thank you :-)

Just leaned back and let me flow with the silent sea of this genius....
Doesn`t need two hours - needs a whole artists life.
