Do the shadows first?!! Life changing. Seriously. Thank you. And btw, that sketch is absolutely beautiful.
‘’ I’m not a very precise sketcher’’ - maybe not, but you are a darn good one. You have your own style and that’s worth a lot. As you say yourself, You tell a story.
Hey thank you so much! Always appreciative of feedbacks!! Everyday is a learning journey.... glad you’ve come along with me!
Love it, My parents from Poland did this type of "sketching" i always loved this type of art...... beautiful.
Lovely! I appreciate your approach and keeping it light and lively! Thank you for sharing.
Welcome! Thanks for tuning in. Hope you will find other videos useful too... stay safe!
So beautiful and subtle !! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, subscribed !
I love this tip, what a great way to lay down some structure before adding color and interest!
Glad you like it!! I am just passing it on… learned it from people much smarter than me! 😉
Steven Reddy, who published a number of books and has training videos on Craftsy, so, applying 3 layer shadows before colorwork is a fundamental part of his elaborated process. He calls it grisaille and uses indian ink, so you can wash any colors on top of the layers. His process is so great that often you simply leave out color layers completely.
Thank you! You’re very confident with colour and that’s something I’m trying to work on so this helps a lot.
Ah you make it look so easy!!! Thank you so much.😊
Haha.. I guess it's easy once you know how... 😂 I hope I am of service to you with my videos... thanks for dropping by and tuning in!!
Loved this! I especially liked that you did the shadowing first, I'll have to try that. I'm still a beginner but I'm curious to try this out. Thank you so much for sharing! 🙏🏻
I'm so happy I found your channel. The way you explain things is so helpful. I always struggle with shadows, so this shadowing tip you provided is very helpful. I love your sketch and painting. Beautiful sketch and fantastic tip about doing the shadow first. Will try asap!
Thank you, I aspire to be as good as you some day! Thank you for the inspiration
Great job and thank you for sharing. I've been painting for years, but still ALWAYS find it very helpful to see how others work to get ideas. I appreciate your commentary as well which helps to understand your process.
Thank you for the wonderful tips and for making sketching simple and achievable. You definitely have a way of explaining it clearly. I subscribed to your channel and will definitely give this a try. Thank you for sharing. 👍🏼👍🏼

Amazing. Im just starting to try my hand at urban sketching and this really helped. Especially your tip on shadowing before colour! I will absolutely apply that to my future work.
Thank you
Hey thank you and all the best to your urban sketching journey! It’s been a blast for me so I hope it will be for you!
this was nicely done... not very complicated but beautiful in its simplicity
Hey thanks. I try to make it simple for beginners and advance beginners. Appreciate all the feedbacks!! 🙏🙏
I wish I had your confidence love your sketch work tfs xx
Hey thanks! I started in 2012 but sketched often, I think I have clocked 4000 hours so far in my journey with watercolor. The practice helps!! 🙏🙏😊
You are a master!!! You don't even did a pencil sketch!!!!!!! You go direct with a marker 😱😱😱
With some practice you can do it too! If you think ratio against the first line, everything will be in proportion… 🙏🙏😊😊
Thank you for the video. Beautiful interpretation of the street. Regards
Thank you for sharing this, I am really trying to relax and get loose about sketching, my poor little brain just takes in soooo much detail I find it hard to just move on to the next thing in the scene without being overwhelmed 😅 It was so fun to watch this whole thing come together and how you focussed on the shadows to get the real feeling of the scene, thanks again.
Glad it’s of use to you!! Details suck everybody in… haha… yes learn to let go and loosen up!!
New sub. Beautiful inspirational work. I will attempt to emulate your style. THANKS 🙏
Thank you this really makes a difference going to use this technique in my next sketch 🥰
Fantastic! Let me know how it goes… here’s the playlist to everything shadow… if you are interested! 🙏🙏😊 Smashing Sketches | Shadow Tips

Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing! I am trying urban sketching so I can draw more than horses!😁 Your make it look so easy...I know with practice I will improve.
It's true, shadows do give the third dimentional structure to the whole art work. I will try this sometime.
Very helpful. Thank you. Now if I could just learn perspective..
Welcome! Have you seen this video on perspective? ua-cam.com/video/bILezIcMJeg/v-deo.html
I just simply find your techniques and finished artwork so fascinating and really has set my desire to learn on fire. Thank you for your inspiration. My sketchbook arrived whilst I was in hospital and after a few more days rest I hope to start sketching.
Keep safe my brother 🙏
Very interesting, I am struggling with the 3-dimensional stuff - thank you, love your sketch😀
Love this and I’m trying to do ink and wash xx
Thanks! Yes Ink and Wash is a lot of fun, try all kind of “recipes” it helps your learning journey for sure!!
I lived in Singapore for 3 years when I was a kid. My dad was in the oil industry.
Super great presentation - love your style. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Whee Teck Ong / Hi Wee. I love Singapore been there a few times. May I ask you if I come again. I would very much like to meet you and maybe do a private session in urban sketching. Is that possible? 😊
@@MsMonika59 Hey - look me up if you ever come, we can always organize something with the Urban Sketching community here! :)
That sounds great. Won’t be for a while with this Covid. But I know for sure I will meet you one day. Can you please do a video on perspective please - I would very much like that 🙏⭐️😊
@@MsMonika59 One day!! Let's pray and hope this Covid goes away quickly, or that vaccine is available in short order! Sure, I will put a to do to get a video on perspective! Thanks for the request... :)
That’s great. Thank you for the tip. Out of interest do you have a consistent colour palette with the same dozen colours or do you switch regularly?
Hey thanks! I kinda settled on some 16 colors these days. But I have stash to experiment with, about 30 or so colors on the side. Here’s the video to my palette setup you might be interested in. ua-cam.com/video/oz0OrhzfQw0/v-deo.html
This was absolutely awesome !! Have you ever made a video about what fountain pen you use and recommend ? :) So far I've been using micron pens but I feel that they don't flow as easily as I'd like for this type of sketches. Thank you !
I would recommend TWISBI fountain pens like the one here so my all time favorite Sailor Fude Nib. I will put a link to the video. ua-cam.com/video/aihfkQXrRQQ/v-deo.html
Great job, great explanation! What nib size and ink are you using? I struggle to find good waterproof ink.
Hi! I use TWISBI or Sailor fountain pens... love them both. For ink, I use deAtrementis archival black. In the past, I used Noodler’s - I find the deAtrementis finer, smoother. Cheers! Thanks!!
Your an awesome artist and really explain your artist process beautifully. Thankyou so much for sharing your creativity. I love your fountain pen could you possibly tell me what it is and is the permanent ink brand called bulletproof permanent? Your really inspiring. Yay for you 🎉✍️
Hi thank you!! The fountain pen is a TWISBI, and ink is De Atrementis Archival Black. 🙏🙏😊
Whee very nice sketch and paint! Great Technique and one I am glad for learning this as I am just starting my painting journey, Thanks for sharing, Be safe in 2021 (We made it so far) Its a Subscribe here -- look forward to learning from You!
Happy new year! Aren’t we glad to get out of 2020? So here’s to an art filled 2021!!
I love this sketch.
I notice you were sketching with a TWSBI fountain pen. What nib size did you use for this drawing (if you recall)? The ink flow seemed very nice and wet. Did you use Artamentis ink?
Thanks.
Interesting. I prefer the opposite. A light wash of just solid flat colors, then shadow on top.
If that works for you… then it’s the best recipe! I think both recipe / process can work but it does lead to slightly different outcome. The only advantage with this recipe is you deal with shadows first. 😊🙏
@SmashingSketches I agree. Whichever technique works best for the artist. My brain works the opposite. Seeing the color on the paper actually helps me determine the best places and depth for the shadows, especially if I'm working from memory. Doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get to the desired outcome.
I also use purple/violet for my shadows. Might not be the most realistic look, but it definitely gives it a more whimsical look. Especially if you use yellow for your bright highlights or your under-wash.
Fantastic Video...
... background (noise) music
Not so much.
Thank you for the feedback! I was over zealous with the music unfortunately. Thanks for tuning in !! 🙏😊
Always love your tutorial... what basic watercolor palette would you recommend for beginners? Thank you 🙂
Hey thanks. You can check this video out. How to Setup Watercolor Palette | 6, 12 or 16 Urban Sketching Colors (9 min) ua-cam.com/video/oz0OrhzfQw0/v-deo.html hope this helps. Let me know if it doesn’t … 🙏😊
I really loved this! I've never tired to put shadows in first. I'm going to try it, and see how it turns out 😆 I love your line work, and the lines your fountain pen gave! What pen and ink do you use? I usually go for non waterproof, but it it would be nice to have some nice juicy lines that won't run when I put watercolor over it!
Thanks! I use Sailor Fude Nib with De Atrementis Archival black ink. So that’s bulletproof ink. Happy sketching!! 🙏😊
@@WheeTeck Oh, I did not recognize the Sailor Fude Nib! I have a De Atrementis in Aarchival brown, so I will try the black also. Looked great . Thank you! :)
@@KateBauerArt apologies. This video is with my TWISBI fountain pen… I use my Sailor much more though. Same ink. 🙏
Thank you for this video. I subscribed to our channel and will check more of your videos. Great details.
Amazing talent and great tips. Can you tell me the fountain pen make/model and tip size of the one you used for this sketch.
Hello!! Thanks for tuning in... the fountain pen I use in this video is TWISBI broad, between Sailor Fude Nib and TWISBI, pretty much all my sketches are done on them. Hope you will explore other videos too, have a great day!
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial! I love the idea of adding shadows first. What kind of fountain pen do you use, if you don't mind sharing? I followed you on Instagram and UA-cam! Great work!
You are welcome. I use TWISBI in this tutorial but I am mostly using Sailor Fude Nib these days… 🙏🙏😊😊
hello! really enjoyed your video! I really would like to know though, how one may choose what to sketch, and what one may leave out of the sketch, while still telling the story completely... i notice you have left out the complete left side of the picture, and yet the story is complete. thank you!
Hello! It’s about the focus of your sketch, everything is nice but not everything is relevant. If the story is a person with a dog going for a walk at Everton Park then what’s the minimum I can get away with? That becomes the choice… 😊😊🙏
I love this. I love your philosophy of doing a quick sketch...... that's what I am trying to do. Not there yet.. but that's my goal. I need to look and see what other videos you have posted. Thank you !!! Wonderful sketch and great tip about the shadows....
Hello! Thank you for checking out my videos... much appreciated! Let me know how i can help, if its within my knowledge, will be more than happy to share!! Keep well and keep safe!
@@WheeTeck Thank you for sharing your techniques and knowledge. I have only been painting for a couple years - mostly landscapes in either watercolor or acrylics on 1/4 sheets of watercolor paper. My biggest problem is doing the sketch..... I'm not very good at it :-). I want to be able to loosely sketch the main parts of what I'm looking at..... particularly buildings...... to give a reasonable impression of what I'm seeing, but without doing a detailed "drawing" with every tiny detail indicated and all of the rules of perspective precisely followed. (I do know and understand the rules of perspective.) In other words, I want to learn how to do a sketch similar to what you are doing here.... So thank you. I will go back and watch all of your previous videos and then I shall practice practice practice and practice some more in a sketchbook.
Haha you’ve got a plan already! All the best!! Have fun!
You made it look so simple. But that’s because you’re experienced and skilful. Well done!
I am sure anyone can get there with some effort 😊😊🙏
