Normally, it’s “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”, but sometimes, it can be “You either die rooting for the hero, or you live long enough to understand the villain”.
Shigaraki's backstory is still my favorite amongst anything I've read or watched within the medium. Not saying it's objectively the best, but it emotionally hits me like no other and how it's portrayed is so heart wrenchingly good thanks to both Horikoshi's talent as a mangaka and Studio Bones talents for adaptating the source material.
Y’know toga and shigarki shows you how badly a quirk could have an effect on you in my hero’s society. Their quirks are quite deadly which in a way fueled them to go down on that dark path. Makes you wonder how other characters with deadly quirks could have end up like Mina or bakugo
Well Bakugo WAS encouraged with his quirk and his hero career aspirations. Mina also likely had a supportive family, or at least plenty of friends. Shigaraki's quirk is, unfortunately for his childhood, far more destructive than mere acid or nitroglycerin hand sweat. Still, he could have potentially become a hero. I mean, 13 is a walking gravitational anomaly with the means to delete you at range. Heck, she could have been a good specialist mentor for little Shigi.
ooh, dont now about Toga. she used her Quirk on her own while Shigaraki did it by mistake the first Times. i dont think you can really compare this two. and she choosed her Path on her own while Shigaraki was manipulated by All for One.
I'd say Petelgeuse's mental breakdown from Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 19 was very painful to watch. One of the most disturbing villains you'll find in any anime, looking back it's only sad seeing he went such a genuinely kind person into a deranged psychopath and it wasn't even his fault
I'm surprised Obito's rage and downward spiral into despair and hatred isn't here. Also Naruto Shippuden ending 28 which IMO is the best and most depressing Naruto ending.
There is no question Squealer has the saddest story alive. One of the best villains in anime history, an incredibly tragic backstory, and a rise to near victory, he is the hero no one thought they needed.
Some special honors should be a couple from Fist of the North Star. Shin, when he loses to Kenshiro, yelling how he could never win Yuria’s heart, and then falls to his death, and Kenshiro mourns for the man whom he once considered a friend. Souther. After seeing his backstory on how he killed his master and decided to kill off his love and humanity. Yet after he is defeated by Kenshiro and is given a talking to by him, he sees his master’s dead body in the pyramid he had built, and started crying for the first time in many years, and that Rin said he’s like a child. It made some fans feel for Souther in a sense.
TBH IMO Starrk's death is sadder than Ulquiorra. The guy who's very lonely he literally split himself just not to be alone. Follows Aizen because he doesn't want to be alone, and when he died, Aizen doesn't even care about him.
As I know every Villain In Demon Slayer has some sad backstory except Douma, if Anyone Thinks Gyutaro and Daki are sad just wait for the most hated man in Demon Slayer to get his backstory; yup Akaza.
greeds death hit me the most since I basically had no friends in high school (dark days man). thankfully I've found good people from college that I still talk to and hang out with to this day
Tenko Shimura/Tomura Shigaraki's Story from My Hero Academia REALLY Breaks My Heart Completely. I felt so Sorry and Bad for him, for what he's been through since Childhood. Poor Kid. 😦😟😢💔
I actually wasn't interested in Tomura Shigaraki until his backstory was fully explored, but once it was, everything came into focus and I see that everything previous to this made sense...
Most of the demons had fucked up backstories. Only like a handful didn’t, and they were usually the ones who chose to be demons. Gyutaro and the spider boy were the only ones who had both fucked up backstories, and chose to receive Muzan’s blood.
I also felt so bad and sorry for Gyutaro and Daki from Demon Slayer. Even though those Demonic Siblings are definitely and totally Super Evil Anime Villains, I can't help but feeling sorry for those two, for what happened to them in their previous lives when they were humans together. That REALLY Touch Me, Right in the Feels. 😟😢😭
Haku was so pure and Zabuza was deeply inlove/admired Haku that it broke him when Haku died. Even Kakashi had the do the honorable thing by carrying him over to Haku.
Dont get me wrong Meruem is a cool af villain and to be respected. But to be honest i never really found his death or story sad or emotional. For me an emotional connection to a villain usually stems from their backstory or motives. But Meruem has always just been the way he is, with no real sight of change in plan or redemption and he probably still would have kept doing terrible things if not killed. And even in the end he takes his friend with him to the grave, sure their story is sweet on her end but that's because her life story is emotional, not because his life story is emotional.
My source is from Cells at Work. Cancer Cell is a mutant monster that divides uncontrollably and destroys the body. But his backstory shows he was born when a Cell made a mistake in the duplication process. He never wanted to born like this and was hunted shortly when the Immune System went after him and his friend. They killed his friend. And live his life as something unwanted. Can’t believe they made me sympathize for a Cancer cell
For Tomura was not always a villian but you what they say "to defeat your enemy you must understand them" i can't blame him for his Quirk i also know a quote "it's not what makes a villian its who makes a villian"

We can all agree that every demon from Demon Slayer has a sad story before they become demons themselves and in Naruto after Kaguya's strike and Indra's jealousy everyone became miss lead so they acted like villains
I'm glad Miyo was on here. Despite the horrible things she did, I couldn't hate her after seeing her story. I just wish we saw the Vampire Twins from Black Lagoon.
The twins' backstory goes into some really dark places, maybe too dark to be mentioned in detail. There is a solid case for one of the twins being on here, with them singing just before getting shot by Balalaika's sniper.
Meruem leaves me in tears to this day in a way I can't even explain he had a unique death that I haven't seen in any other form of media and he's the only Villain that I actually forgave in any Anime. DAKI AND GYUTARO are good characters sure but being abused and poor isn't a unique villain storyline that makes me cry or even sympathize with I understand everyone has their own opinions I just feel it's overrated and will eventually be forgotten unlike Meruem. HunterXHunter started out with no one even acknowledging its existence but progressive it's been filtered out of all the basic shows simply because of how it's story was written.
Oikawa's story is even more tragic thanks to the Tri movies, since all the effort his sacrifice at the end did to fix damage to the digital world was erased when The Reboot reset the entire Digital World
That's what I love about demon slayer, the demons (except muzen and *spoiler,*spoiler) they have sad backstories even upper 2 who killed the fire pillar he also has a sad story
I have a feeling that akainu from one piece is gonna have an insanely sad backstory, there has to be a reason why he hates pirates so much that he literally will destroy the whole world if it means killing all pirates!!
Hey, WatchMojo. How about you do a list of the Top 20 Cutest Girls in Anime? For this list, please mention the following: Anya Forger (Spy x Family) Kanna Kamui (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid) Chiyo Mihama (Azumanga Daioh) Yoshino Himekawa (Date A Live) Chibiusa (Sailor Moon) Konata Izumi (Lucky Star) Wendy Marvell (Fairy Tail)
Wait till Akaza's back story is revealed(which would be like season 4 of Demon Slayer)He probably had the saddest of life of any demons, since life just managed to find new ways to screw him over
Anime are good in making backstory of villains. You understand their motivations and where they're coming from. You don't necessarily have to symthatize but at least you know why they're doing it
I love fullmetal alchemist and fullmetal alchemist brotherhood! But, in each rendition of both animes I can't watch the episodes about Tucker turning his daughter Nina and her dog Alexander into a chimera. I always cry when I watch those episodes. Whenever I get nostalgic and decide to rewatch them I always skip those episodes. It just hurts my heart to watch them.
Where is Rolo Lamperouge from Code Geass R2? That brat didn't value human life, selfish, killed Shirley, deceived Lelouch, wanted Nunnally out of Lelouch's life, etc. But in the end he sacrificed his selfish life to protect his fake brother who was only using him. 😭
I missed Hao. He saw his mother get killes before his eyes only because she saw spirits. He still tried to do good and still got betrayed. Seems its not sad enough
I'm dissapointed that there's no visible gore in Shigaraki's past. I mean everyone is crumbling out of existence and somehow the anime made them look like cement
Okay so I know I can't be the only person who believes Meruem deserves 1st place right? I believe they got the facts wrong Meruem was an ant who right when he was finally learning to become human had that chance taken from him and before anyone says oh he was going to be evil he never wanted to kill netero he offered only peaceful solutions to the point where even Netero was forced to cut his conversation short because he knew if he spoke with him any longer that he would've questioned his even being there in the first place Netero is the true Villain who was battle hungry for a worthy opponent look it up if you're curious also Komugi was not his friend she was his love interest it's very explicitly stated in the show and anime idk how the hell people don't recognize that I believe it's do to a poor dub idk but she grew up blind in a poverty stricken family and was routinely beaten for not being good enough and she was only kept around because her family accidentally found out she had a talent for playing Gungi "fancy checkers" and they used that to gamble her life for money consistently and always kept all the money never allowing her to do anything on her own and basically treating her as their slave which is why when Meruem the Tyrannical Ant King saw her talent complimented her and acknowledged her existence and told her she had value she broke down and started crying and idk if it's just me but damn that fucking scene still fucks with me it's worse than the beginning of UP
Also before anyone says Demon Slayer should be the top of the list the "Tragic" Twins have the most basic backstory in the world 2 poor orphans hell that's literally been around since Ancient times it's not sad it's a trope that was used properly and will probably be forgotten in the future when more popular anime use a different trope but everyone has their own opinions and I won't deny it should be placed on this list simply because it's more than likely some people's first ever experience with such a sad story idk
Ugh. Meruem is so overrated. Like oh boo hoo, he finally learned that just killing everyone isn't the right thing to do, only after killing tons of hunters and his own kind, only to die by whoopsie poison rose. I honestly DO NOT see the appeal.
