- Aizen, Madara, Doflamingo, Hisoka. I could go on for days about the countless iconic villains featured in shonen anime, but when it comes to the cool factor, Bleach's Aizen has everyone beat by a country mile. What is it about Aizen that makes him so compelling to everyone, to the point where when someone mentions anime and villain in the same sentence, most people think of Aizen? Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, and Jujutsu Kaisen have GREAT villains, but why does Aizen's name carry so much weight? In this video, I explore the magic behind Aizen and how him shifting from main villain to antagonistic force lurking in the background was a genius decision by Kubo, as it allowed Aizen to maintain his terrifying presence while also helping the main characters achieve their goals when he's absolutely needed to. It speaks volumes about how well Bleach is written for such a villain to exist in it, even when he isn't the main big bad in the TYBW arc.

Not just manga, media in general is too obsessed with redeemable villains nowadays. A truly irredeemably-evil villain can also be an amazing villain

Honestly Kenpachi is one of the nicest captains around man, he does not deserve to be called that crazy.
He actively chooses to spare people and try make them change in his own way and outside of battle he's kinda level headed since he just doesn't care about much else. It's why he was one of the only ones to help Ichigo and co in soul society.
Sure he did it for a good fight, but he was the only one to not be wrapped up in weird squad squabbles and politics in the gotei.
Meanwhile Soi-Fon is unhinged. She was way too trigger happy to kill people.
Zaraki feels like a second main character. We see him becoming stronger both in terms of power and mentally.
Zaraki doesn't actively chose to spare people. He choses not to finish them off once they're down. There's a difference between the two. If you're too weak then you'll get killed. If you're lucky enough to survive a strike despite being defeated then he won't finish you off. He won't help you either. He'll leave you there to bleed out unless someone else comes to help. Also we've seen the literal mountain of corpses that Zaraki cut down back then as a child.
Soi-Fon was literally raised to serve as a killing tool subordinate to the Shihoin. And the Shihoin were incharge of an organisation that either killed off or imprisoned anyone they deemed "dangerous" to the safety of Seireitei. Soi-Fon is trigger happy to kill people because killing people is her job description. She's not trained to kill hollows. She's trained to kill people.
Can you blame Soi Fon when she hardly has any good things happening during her early life all the way until she became a captain? Heck, she was outright taught to kill.
@@Honest_Mids_Masher Soi fon is the leader of an organisation whose objective is to assassinate or capture people who might threaten soul society. Her job isn't to fight hollows. Her job is to literally kill people. She was raised from childhood to be a part of that organisation as well.

This take is so on point. Aizen isn't humbled, he doesn't see his imprisonment as defeat it's just merely a respite while he goes over a few flaws in his designs, the Geoti 13 can't destroy him because they really don't know how, he's basically immortal.
The reason he won't join the heir of god's side, Yhwach, as a servant is because he already felt strong enough to defy god in the first place.
Yhwach even himself admitted at his current strength it would take considerable time and resources to destroy even a *restrained* Aizen as his All Seeing power hadn't awakened yet and he currently had fish to fry but I'm sure he had it in mind to revisit when such time he could cognate and fully control the soul kings power.
Absolute best villain written in such a way you don't question the absurdity of his knowledge and power because the other characters that defy him like Kuske, Shunsui, Yoruichi and of course Ichigo also have been written to have such power and potential that when they are obviously dwarfed by Aizen it hits pretty solid. Kubo's creation never got nerfed by a setback.
And the fact is Aizen isn’t killed and sentenced to 20000 years in prison. Meaning no hax bullshit ability can kill him. Not even Black Mausoleum.

@@sarthakarora3212 Who is "they"? Because, objectively speaking, Gotei 13 can't kill him or they WOULD have. That's the whole point of him being imprisoned. The Hōgyoku isn't even understood by Urahara or Mayuri and THAT would have to be taken care of to even have a chance of killing him. By the end of the series, there's not a single person with power to kill him (let alone not be manipulated on top of that). Without the Hōgyoku I doubt many, if any, of the Gotei 13 can deal with him, except for Yamamoto just burning literally everything and hoping he's even in Soul Society.
The best part about yhwach and aizen is yhwach can see the future and predict whatever Aizen might do, but it doesn't help shit. All the predictions do for him is he knows not to fuck with Aizen and that his best option is to run.
Most series: Villain becomes good, then died immediately after. (because God forbid you actually get to enjoy seeing their redemption arch in fruition.)
Bleach: Villain remains villain, can't be killed off due to immortality, and got stronger while incapable of moving, and having all their senses restrained.

Aizen was the only one that really gave set off those danger vibes and was a long term threat.
Unlike the other's that got wiped off the board in a small few chapters.

@@sahilsinghrautela743 Tsukishima led to some good horror moments by turning Ichigo's friends and family into his puppets, but he wasn't really all that threatening once put up against a strong opponent. His strength is his ability to manipulate the mind, but that didn't matter when against someone whose loyalty to Ichigo surpassed his alterations. Aizen was also incredibly manipulative whilst being incredibly powerful and continuously unstoppable.
Aizen is a legendary villain. And I love how while he doesn’t have a “redemption arc” you DO so a tiny bit of growth. Even Shunsui knew despite it all to keep him restrained as much as possible because he would be a PROBLEM

The best part for me, with Aizen, was when he was offered to join Yhwach to destroy the soul society and the soul king. Aizen refused solely because he refused to work under someone because he is the one to be on top and control everything no one else.
Aizen is simply playing the waiting game. Another irredeemable villain in this series is Tokinada Tsunayashiro and his 'watch the world burn for fun' mentality. He meets his end by CFYOW's conclusion, but he dies laughing in that he has already ended or ruined many lives while the system that molded/abetted him remains in place, only stopping him because he knew too much and was going to reveal all in his ambition. Yoruichi makes this coldly clear to Kisuke in the novel's final pages.
Yessss. I really really hope Tokinada and the cfyow characters make an appearance in the upcoming hell arc. They were a joy to read and this arc should be pretty much the Bleach All Stars Battle Royale we were waiting for

Aizen himself spent most of his time yapping, only for Ichigo to counter his talk no jutsu with a face palm hand sign.
Because he doesnt have a background, they have nothing to talk about to use on him. No family, no childhood friends, no nakama.

Aizen never really killed a good guy in the end. He killed Gin and Tosen who were long gone into gray/dark area.
He also killed a human in karakura town

he came back and said "yeah i'll help. but it'll cost you". the way he emerged from the shadows and looked down on the new Head Captain, it was almost as if Shunsui was making a deal with the devil himself. he has MVE
I think what makes Aizen so compelling is that he's a force of nature type of villain, represented as a human. He's both a cataclysm - something beyond our understanding and reach, and a human - something we are familiar with. As a result it just creates this immense dissonance because he doesn't act like his appearance and is immensely powerful
Aizen truly kept me guessing on what he was going to do when he was reintroduced in the final arc. Little did I know he was going to do absolutely nothing besides distracting yhwach in one fight! Incredible job, Kubo, my expectations were subverted
aizen was just aura farming in tybw, he is quite literally impossible to beat or kill since he survived probably the strongest attack in bleach(mugetsu) so he seems to not really take anything seriously
Aizen is an unknown, he just wants to overthrow anyone above him like the soul king but even though he lost to ichigo, Aizen remained true to his character and even now we don't know his motivation, his origin story, his bankai.. He's an eternal cool villain that doesn't change his course no matter what
Keeping his composed, if outright disrespectful, tone for most of all scenes he's been on (I only remember Aizen getting mad during his sealing), being so many steps ahead he basically had finished the race, bodying protagonists left and right, getting STRONGER while sitting on a chair custom-made to restrain him, and even in the middle of a war flat out refusing to take any sides that weren't his. Aizen is just a special kind of villain, so deadset on his goal that one can't help but to admire and fear him. Love a villain like that.

Such a god tier top top top villain in fiction. theres so many villains ive studied but Aizen is essentially not only right but hes multi faceted in every aspect of writing except obv a sob backstory but Aizen stands out amongst them immensely hes essentially manga and anime Lucifer from powers demeanor philosophy themes etc . some ppl say johan from monster or grifith is better but they dont understand the complexity of Aizen 99% of the time
It is a popular trope of long series when in order to defeat a greater evil a previous villain helps main characters.
Yeah but it isn't that common in modern anime, the other anime I have seen this being used in modern times is Dragon Ball Super with Frieza.
I think you've perfectly described it, he still *IS* Aizen. Aizen was, and is, a Trancendant being capable of easily whiping out the universe and he didn't lose that in TYBW. It was expanded on in the light novels, but one of Aizen's true strengths that go underlooked because of his god-like Reiatsu and intelligence is his ability to speak and sow discourse to suit his needs.
Reading the manga we had no fucking clue what Aizen truly was thinking, what his plan was, or who he actually was, and we still don't. *THAT'S* what makes him compelling. Someone who you well and truly believe is 5 steps ahead of you, and it's terrifying. If there ever was a Machiavellian devil, it would be Aizen.
I think it’s also a result of how the protagonist is treated with less favoritism than in other series.
To elaborate cause I know people tend to think Ichigo is more of a chosen one Mary Sue than others, in the final arc after getting his ultimate power up Ichigo proceeds to win 0 fights, get beaten offscreen by a henchman and accomplish absolutely nothing against the final villain even using his full power. Imagine that happening in any other shonen.
As someone who really likes Ichigo it’s frustrating but a result of kubo treating his MC like that the villains become much more credible. Not just aizen by yhwach not getting beaten by Ichigo in their final bout and it having to be a team effort is a rare thing.
And of course aizen was as necessary as Ichigo was to defeating him. Ichigo was the only one with the strength to finish yhwach off but without kyokasuigetsu and aizen’s immortality it would be impossible to get close.
So a big part of it is how kubo just doesn’t care about Ichigo basically which is sad but interesting and unique for sure. Even in other manga where the main character is considered to be outshone by others like JJK they still get their triumphant moment at the end. Kubo didn’t even let Ichigo beat aizen with no caveats. Needed urahara’s kido to save him.
Probably because Aizen had been training for centuries and Ichigo first picked up a sword like a few months earlier. He should've lost literally every single fight vs. any shinigami, even the fodders. The fact that he can compete with monsters like Aizen despite having minimal training is ... well, it's something special, that's for sure. Very shonen-esque.
Even Naruto had been training for most his life. Ichigo is that guy who swings a sword around like a baseball bat, gets smashed, training montage, then comes back with some BS powerup he pulled out his ass to win the day.

Naruto in like a week got better at sage mode than jiraiya did his whole life. That’s fine I guess. And beats people who have trained decades longer than he has. Same goes for luffy and any other MC you can name. Goku too. It’s only an issue in bleach cause people are biased beyond belief.
If your superpowers are stronger than your opponents training is barely a factor. You think a martial artist can beat a lion or a bear?
BTW it’s Naruto who asspulled a power up to fight the final villains of his story. In fact he’s done that as many times as Ichigo has. Luffy too. So calm your bias.

In fact ichigo is shown on screen training more than naruto and much more than most other protags. He spent an entire month training to extend the duration of his hollow mask and after a whole month he could do it for 11 seconds.
@ None of the ninjas have been training for hundreds of years. Even Madara wasn't that old in the end. So ... yeah, Ichigo swatting guys with 3000+x more experience than him after like a few weeks of fighting trash hollows and minimal training in the substitute shinigami arc into early SS arc and then a few months later fighting evenly with someone who has essentially become a demi-god is a little out there.
And Naruto is dumb about this too. I just think Naruto being OP is marginally easier to accept. But the Sharingan and its ever-expanding list of random powers is total BS ...
Aizen never truly lost to this day. The most they could do was seal him.
By the end of Bleach, lot of his goals ended up being achieved anyway.
More then I can about for example Madara who died twice and really nothing to show for it besides be fodder to final villain while Aizen fooled the final villain.
Madara also never really lost. It took a literal deus ex machina that came out of nowhere for him to be disposed of, just like Aizen only lost because Isshin gave Ichigo the right power-up at the right time (which also came pretty much out of nowhere)
As you get older Aizen only becomes more relatable. He simply opposes those which aim to control him. Literally anyone can relate to this; esp as you get older and realize everything comes down to control

Imagine the TYBW anime changes the end: we keep his quote from the manga but instead of him in jail, they show 2 scenes with the dialogue playing. Jail and a scene of a bespectacled Aizen drinking o-cha in a resort off the coast of Japan like this was another Friday.
Everyone left wondering if he went back to jail or he’s out in human world holidaying and leaving kyoka suigetsu to mock the Gotei.

I'm sure Aizen felt amazing upon discovering his zanpakuto, said to be the merely tip of the iceberg that is his power, overpowered the senses of ywach the almighty...who brought all of soul society to the brink of disolution.
That was one of my favorite moments in the manga "how interesting..."

Aizen is one of those protagonists that don't use brute force to make his mark but he uses mind manipulation deception and his intelligence to make his mark and boy does it work
You gotta respect that Vegeta is one of the few villains that didn’t lose his sauce after he was no longer the main antagonist. The Namek arc essentially pivots around Vegeta as its main character.
There is a saying: "A story is as good as its villain".
If the villain stops your theme song, you know he's overpowered.
Even when he's resealed, he gets back to planning, plotting.

Aizen's defeat to Ichigo changed Aizen just like Ichigo changed Soul Society. Shunsui even says he hopes one day they'll be on the same side.

it's crazy how the most epic thing that happened in the latest season is a man sitting on a chair
Aizen was legit not that bad. Barely even a villain, tbh. He: 1. was actually right about the SK; 2. effectively managed HM and improved conditions for the hollows there drastically; 3. captured Orihime as a prisoner of war and was extremely generous to her, despite having no need to be; 4. could easily have wiped out half the Gotei-13 or more, but preferred to spare everyone besides Yamamoto. He killed Tosen for a personal reason and Gin because Gin betrayed and nearly succeeded in assassinating Aizen (Gin was a real threat and had to die).
He is arrogant, and his goals oppose the interests of the "heroes", but otherwise ...? What did he actually do that was so bad? Mayuri is 100x worse than Aizen.
Actually, now that I think about it, his hollowification experiments were pretty dark. And he certainly was dangerous to certain people. But, still ... for a villain, not such a bad fella, IMO.
I dunno man, if we knew more about what he actually wanted to do after disposing of the SK I could maybe start to understand but, as things stand, TYBW only proves that Kisuke was right and the SK shouldn’t be removed.
@@Ozzieapologist I had thought that he intended to replace the SK somehow. But would he actually have been able to remain conscious/sentient? I don't know. It's been like 16 years since I last read Bleach. But he was right in that the current system was deeply flawed, and no one seemed interested in doing much about it. Even the "good guys".

Aizen has not redeemed himself, but his behavior shows that he has become calmer and more reasonable than he ever was. That is, he became a more peaceful person, the revolutionary who reread Nietzsche died in battle with Ichigo.This shows us the most interesting redemption arc - where the character is no longer evil, but he hasn't become good yet either.

Aizen is so powerful everyone I’ve ever hear talk about him, refers to him by his last name, no first name basis like Madara, no nicknames like Blackbeard, it’s always Mr.Aizen, none of the Sosuke or anything.

The f*ck? Madara's full name is Madara Uchiha. There's a ton of other Uchiha so using his last name instead of "Madara" to refer to him would just make everything hella confusing. Generally when multiple characters hail from the same clan we tend to use their first name instead of clan name.

Bleach has "antagonists" not villains they are likely just stop fighting because they aren't killed but they are still their own personality and you can't change that you are only teamed up with him because you have the same goal or that their goal needs your goal to be finished and half the time they know that they will just go to hell arc and aizen would have 2 plans to have a backup plan in case he wins or loses and he would lose and you know that aizen will just have the main villain to die because its is own turf
I would like to add a villain is someone who goes against the hero the person who goes against the main character or portal would be a antagonist while they can be the same thing they are not always the same thing

Video essays are trash, but... 2:13 claim is wild. Gaara literally defeats Kimimaro, one of the main "next villains" at the time, Madara didn't become the "next villain" until the later half of the end of naruto as a whole, by then Gaara was more of a "good guy" than Sasuke.

Villain redemption trope is one of the WORST tropes when it’s done wrong… it isn’t like other overused tropes which are usually just annoying. Sometimes it just makes the story ass, for example MHA

Clearly you didn't read MHA. Gran Torino tells Deku outright that he will likely have to kill Shigaraki (which he does). The other primary antagonist is killed along with the entire main league of villains cast. Who in MHA besides those gets a redemption?!!
Naruto is a much worse example, while in M.H.A Shigiraki went from broken to irredeemable which is really rare in today's media.
