    Dmc Dante is a example for this trope. He sword the Rebellion is a big ass claymore that has a skull guard. It's Gothic and flashy just like Dante. At the start of dmc 3 the prequel. The Rebellion skull mouth and guards are closed. After his first fight with Vergil. The sword mouth and guard opens to symbolizing his awaken power as he gains his devil trigger. Dante awakening isn't just about Dante becoming stronger. It's about him learning the values of being human. His sword the Rebellion also symbolizing him and his father rebelling against power hungry demons kings. It also looks cool

    i think the thing i like most about the dragon slayer from berserk is that guts doesn't wield it because its cool and intimidating (which it is too) but because the only thing that can realistically slice through an apostle and survive is a giant iron guillotine because any other handheld weapons will just snap immediately
    and its shown the shear power difference between the dragon slayer and other weapons you never see someone parry the dragon slayer with a smaller sword because its so heavy it just cleaves through weapon armour person and horse in one swing
    the only one who can deal with this sword are the monsters it was designed to kill
    that's the thing i don't general like about giant swords in media ,they don't tend to have true weight behind them people wield these things with one hand waving them around like any old broad sword and said sword can be blocked and parried by any other sword ,in that naruto clip the giant sword was blocked by a knife ,if you replaced most giant swords with ordinary ones in these animations you would get the same movements and it wouldn't look out of place, also in terms of character design these people don't look like they could wield these massive swords being pretty thin and anime protagonist lookin lads (and i know they would all have fictional strength boosts but im talking mostly about vibe and look)
    welp that was a short comment that turned into a disorganized rant
    full disclosure i haven't seen most of these but ive read berserk and its one of the best things ive ever read
    yeah ive probably oversimplified a lot of these and am wrong about a few
    feel free to explain what you think about all this i love the discussion
    its also 4:40am so im pretty zeepy

    • @joetalks.
      @joetalks.  2 місяці тому +2

    • @damen9578
      @damen9578 2 місяці тому +2

      Totally!
      It’s not confirmed, but heavily implied, that he isn’t just any ordinary mercenary as well. He’s one with a moniker, unknown to himself of course, called Cleaving Gale. In the story mercenaries with titles aren’t just identifying names for the individuals, but only given to strongest and people known to change the tide of wars if you have them on your side.
      So the main character having a massive sword, one where his companion can almost hide behind, makes sense he’s so strong.

    As a pretty major fan of Bleach and trying to keep spoilers to a minimum I disagree that Ichigo's BFS is just type one but arguably all 3 (while 2 is mostly opinion based the sword and all its forms has always been cool to me.) Zangetsu being type 1 is fairly obvious as the reason stated is it represents his spiritual power/pressure. Where it becomes type 3 however is mostly related in his backstory which you learn about in later arcs. Aside from the disagreement on this I loved the vid as I have always liked the BFS trope starting with Ichigo, Inuyasha and Zabuza's Executioner Blade, then discovering FF7 and finally with Berserk.

    • @joetalks.
      @joetalks.  2 місяці тому +35

      @@tekniekgamer6599 thanks for your thoughts! Looking back, you're right. I think I mistook not marking him down for 3 because I was still under the concept of the sword itself symbolizing responsibility or burden, but honestly Zangetsu's size has always been chalked up to his power, and symbolically his potential to grow. Good points, thanks for your comment! 🩶

    a sword that i feel could pretty easily count for all three categories is the hand of malenia from elden ring.
    cat 1: it exists as a symbol of power because malenia has never been defeated. ever. (well, at least until you show up)
    cat 2: its a 9 foot long golden katana built into a prosthetic arm, how can it *not* be cool
    cat 3: the sword being part of a prosthetic arm is there for a reason. malenia is rotting from the inside out, and has to have the prosthetics to do anything. the gold in them is meant to help her resist the rot. even then, she is considered to be the absolute final boss of her world.

    An additional piece of information is that the big sword = bodyguard has historical roots, Montante/Zweihander (The irl BFS) were used as a bodyguard's weapon, because their size serves the purpose of area control rather than "attack power", by swinging it around you deny your opponent the act of getting closer, allowing you to protect someone by keeping them out of harm's way.

    Riven from league of legends carries a broken sword that, once it gets rebuilt thanks to her ultimate ability, becomes the big sword that she once wielded. She used to be a solider for an empire called Noxus which is an empire that values strenght above all else, she received her runic sword after getting recognition from the empire but the sword was just a way to keep her alive for a mission that killed her squad and a lot of innocents.
    She then deserts the Noxian empire after feeling betrayed for what she was tasked to do without her knowing, she tries to break the sword but by breaking it it also kills an innocent man that was trying to help Riven. She then becomes a farmer before having her past caughting up to her. She's now trying to repair her wrongs by fighting against the empire that she once fought for and represented everything that she stood for.
    Her blade actually represents her story quite well. A big and powerful sword that evoques strenght just like what she thought Noxus was all about, now being a broken blade just like what Riven is, a broken women who's trying to right her wrongs.

    In terms of real-life giant swords, you may be interested in Skallagrim's video on giant swords. Apparently they weren't necessarily turboheavy, but there's definitely physics and leverage to account for when wielding it. And context on where and against whom it would be used.
    Skall's a big enthousiast for historical weaponry and martial arts, mainly with weapons rather than melee. He's done videos on the likes of flails, combination weapons, tests with Igorot headhunting/kalinga axes, falchions, axes, etc.
    For as much as he emphasizes realism or can laugh at weapon designs with MAINY pointy bits, he has stated the joy of all-out fantasy as well and the importance of not taking things too seriously. or letting others tell you what to enjoy.

    Another person who uses a BFS for the storytelling purpose of being a protector is Artorias, the Abyss Walker, and Knight of Gwyn. His sword represents his strength and devotion to Gwyn, but also the isolation he felt as the strongest up until he met Sif. His sword carries this message, and his lineage on, in the next Dark Souls games
    It also represents his depraved bestial self when Manus takes hold of him. Battered, bruised, and unable to fight at his actual strength (or as a noble knight of Gwyn), he goes out flailing around like a sick dog, and that's amazing

    Honorable mention: Guilty Gear protagonist Sol Badguy's "Fireseal" (Blazer) or Junkyard Dog in the later parts of the series
    It's a weapon made from the remains of a much more powerful weapon called the "Outrage." Said weapon was so strong that it had to be broken into multiple fragments which Sol poses a modified version of the Fireseal combined with the Flashing fang thus creating the Junkyard dog.
    There's also another character in the Guilty Gear series named Nagoriyuki who welds a Daisho (a large oodachi plus a wakizashi) and is one of the few weapons capable of dealing fatal damage to Sol Badguy who possess impressive regeneration and durability from being a gear (its complicated but the Guilty Gear story is also complicated so eh)

    At the end of Devil May Cry 5, Dante gets his own personal BFS called the Devil Sword Dante. It's named after him because it is the weaponized embodiment of himself. In the story it signifies the peak of his power and gives him his ultimate form of the Sin Devil Trigger. In the game it brings so much to the table that I consider it the greatest story upgrade ever (as far as action games go, anyways). The sword gives Dante three new things: a new super form (or rage mode, whichever works for you) and summoned swords--spectral swords that have two major functions.
    Sin DT is a very powerful rage mode. It's not the typical rage mode that acts as a panic button or free damage opportunity. It instead requires that you hold the transformation button until you want to transform (which makes it a planned option instead of a panic mode) and that you have a maxed out style meter (meaning that you have to have near perfect control of the combat encounter). This form requires perfection and mastery and what you get are short yet nearly spammable bursts of great power that can be fluidly weaved multiple times in your combos. This is especially helpful on the hardest difficulty where enemy health and poise skyrocket. It does more utility things than just raw damage, but I'll keep it at that for now.
    Summoned Swords are primarily used for utility instead of damage. In gameplay, Dante can command these spectral swords to perform a couple of attacks that have different knockback properties to them. What makes it even better is how Dante doesn't commit to any kind of animation when he commands his swords. What I mean by this is that he doesn't need to stop whatever he's doing in order to give a signal. The swords just do their thing. If Dante is locked in any animation whatsoever, his swords will still do as you command. This allows players to implement them into combos in order to manipulate knockback or even stop it all together which greatly increases combo potential. At the highest level of play, players can quickly reposition themselves after inputing a summoned swords command in order to make it seem like the swords appeared from a different location, allowing for even more opportunities to be used in combat.
    The other use for summoned swords are its Swords Formation ability. This state is like a mini super form. It slightly boosts power, but it significantly boosts all four of Dante's styles. In Royalguard style, Dante can parry, counterattack, and store up parries for a huge attack. Swords Formations enhances this style by increasing RG gain and reduces damage taken. In Gunslinger style, Dante gains access to the rest of his gun moves. Swords Formations make the swords automatically target and shoot at the closest enemy you aren't locked on. In Trickster style, Dante gains way more mobility options. Swords Formations drastically boost this style by giving +1 of every movement option he has in this Trickster. Extra dash, extra air dash, extra jump, and extra teleport. Combine this with Dante's original super form and you get +2 of everything. In his last style, Swordmaster, Dante gains access to the rest of his melee attacks. Swords Formations will enhance every single melee attack he has in one of two ways. Some attacks will simply be followed by all four swords which is just a general damage boost. Other attacks will have the swords cover their weaknesses. For example, some attacks with a long windup (like an uppercut) will be covered by having the swords spin in a buzz saw formation in front of Dante which both stuns enemies and drags them closer in front of you for a guaranteed hit. All attacks also get a range increase due to the swords.

      All the swords in Devil May Cry qualify as oversized swords. Rebellion, Force Edge, Red Queen, Alastor, Sparda, that one sword the Nero used at the intro of Devil May Cry 4, hell, even Yamato qualifies as in oversized sword.

      Ah, finally found the DMC fan section of the comments. ✋😂
      Something I gotta point out, is that _"maximazing the style rank"_ aka. _"Quadruple S"_ is not mandatory for using "_Sin Devil Trigger/Second Super Form"._ It just allows you to skip the transformation animation, allowing you to fluently intergrate the SDT's moveset into your combo's like the playable character Dante would do.
      Also _"Devil Sword Dante"_ and it's _"Summoned Swords"_ have a deeper meaning as well: They connect the character Dante closer to his family, by giving him more traits to share. First he now obviously carries a sword with his own name, like his father before him. Secondly, the _Summoned Swords_ used to be *his brother Vergil's traitmark* since the very first DMC and were later given to Vergil's son Nero (and directly Dante as the demon weapon _"Lucifer".)_ But DSD now officially makes them a _"Family Trait",_ rather than a _"Vergil Trait",_ meaning *even Sparda* could've had them.
      Overall, _Devil Sword Dante_ is _"BFS"_ with a deep lore and symbolism behind it, than the typical _"anime big sword"._

      @@solracstormhunter3023 for the first point, yes you’re right. I meant to say SSS is required for optimal play because otherwise it just sucks for a super form.
      As for your second point, I’ve only played the 5th game, so I couldn’t comment on its narrative symbolism. Thank you for this.

    A subversion to this trope that I really like is when a small weapon or object is capable of dealing massive amounts of damage that has to be witnessed to be believed. Massive swords have this menacing aura to them because they immediately exude significance and strength; you KNOW BY SIGHT they do their shit.
    But small items are so unassuming and so unexpected. Once you see what they can actually do, they give off this similar sense of anticipation, making the viewer wonder about the worst the object can do.
    Best example I know in manga is BLAME! and the Gravitational Beam Emitter. Killy (the MC) has what is arguably considered as the very first GBE in existence: a pistol.
    Compared to whatever Killy has to contend with in the City and all their weapons, the GBE looks so unassuming. But once you see the destruction the gun is capable of, it puts you on edge.
    Canonically, the GBE emits gravitons that fire straight, collapsing the gravitational stability around its trajectory, forcing an implosion then forcing an explosion. And yes, the whole trajectory is affected. It ensures utter annihilation of everything in its path compared to conventional firepower and lasers. It's like shooting linear black holes that manifest temporarily before disappearing, tearing apart the molecular structures of anything.
    The manga showcases well the chain reaction of destruction that Killy's GBE can deal. At its weakest, a Level 1 GBE shot has an average trajectory distance of 70 KILOMETERS. And get this; the recoil of the GBE is insane. Most fired shots send Killy flying back. At MAX level, firing the GBE completely dislocates (and even tears off) Killy's arm in the process.

    One I really like that isn’t discussed frequently is Red’s Transistor sword from the game Transistor. It’s fascinating because it is both the tool she uses to achieve her goals, but also the burden that sets the entire plot off, as it was used to attempt to kill her. Without getting into spoilers, it is such a fascinating use of the trope as Red is not a fighter by any notion, but she has to use the weapon which was meant to kill her, and in some ways stole the most important part of herself, while trying to save those she cares about

    Seeing as some FF swords were mentioned here, I have to bring up one of the old school ones. In Final Fantasy VI (released originally in 1994), there is a weapon which has become legendary throughout the entire series in one way or another that got its start here: the Atma Weapon, or Ultima Weapon as it was retranslated. While it doesn't look like much when you first acquire the weapon, one trait that remains constant with it is the ability to ignore the target's defense. The damage on it is *technically* variable, but it remains mostly constant as long as the wielder's HP is full, and the maximum damage increases as the wielder's max HP does. Cloud's version in the original FF7 works the same way, aside from ignoring defense. The FF6 version also appears as the largest blade in the game at full power, with the Ragnarok and Organyx swords coming very close. I believe the Organyx might be longer, but the Ultima Weapon honestly looks more impressive.
    Edit to add: I nearly forgot about the Lightbringer, which is actually the most powerful sword in the game. It can only be acquired by wagering the Ragnarok in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum, and it's about the same size as the full-power Ultima Weapon. It also has a chance of randomly casting Holy on hit.

    Zanbato is just the Japanese word for a Zhan Ma Dao. It’s exactly as described. A sword for dealing with cavalry by killing the horse. Lit: Horse Butchering Sword. They were made famous for being employed by the famous Song dynasty general Yue Fei.
    I have one. It’s actually pretty easy to use and not heavy. Well balanced. It is awkward if you’re used to traditional two handed swords since the technique isn’t quite the same. But if you’ve used a claymore or zweihander the handling isn’t that far off. It’ll still feel weird at first though.

    A little trivia about Sasaki Kojiro. His sword was nicknamed "The Clothes Drying Pole." Often he was depicted as a peer of Musashi Miyamoto, but some records say he might have been 15-20 years his senior. He was also said to have a short temper, the reason why Miyamoto took a few hours past the appointed time to reach the islet to anger him beyond his patience. It was also said the blow to the ribs wasn't the cause of death. He supposedly passed away from a strike to the cranium after trying a failed suprise attack, startling Musashi. However, a lot a Japanese history can be considered dubious at best. Take this with a grain of salt.
