- Cats have captivated creatives through the millennia with their curious characters and mesmerizing mannerisms. Their likenesses and temperaments have been painted, sculpted, and illustrated innumerable times over, which warrants a little compilation of artists inspired by these alluring animals.
This is Several Circles, where we tell the stories of extraordinary artists from across history and the present day. We believe art history content should be accessible-free of charge and impenetrable jargon, but abundant in fascinating facts, illuminating analyses, and entertaining anecdotes.
Each episode is written and hosted by Rachel, an art journalist-turned-copywriter at The Met, and produced by Jason, a New York City art technician. The fuzzy feline superstars are Jimmy (big and bushy) and Tallulah (small with thumbs).
We started this channel to indulge our fascination with what compels an artist to create the way they do, and we intend to grow it into a vast and celebratory archive of the weird and wonderful eccentrics who constitute the art history continuum. I was so happy to see Louis Wain in this episode🥰 I adore his masterpieces very much
Thanks for the video!
Wow Rachel, that's a cornucopia of cute cuddly cats, mixed with the occasional mouse nightmare! Thanks for bringing some light on such a dark day.
So glad you enjoyed it! Kitties lend a little magic to this twisted world 😺
You show wonderful videos of all my favorite artists and here my life long passion for kittys is beautifully presented. Thank you
Wow, amazed how such great artists have incorporated beatifull feline beings in their lives & art.
HI, EVERYBODY! MY ARTWORKS ARE FEATURED AT THE END OF THIS WONDERFUL VIDEO
Thanks!
Wow! Thanks so much 🐈
I love these videos and your undeniable and dear enthusiasm while talking about these works and these artists! Thank you so much for the consistently brilliant content
Now you gotta do one for man’s best friend 💖
Awesome! I just finished watching the biopic about Louis Wain on Prime. He obviously wasn't the only one with a cat fixation!
I love the extra appearances by the Art Cat!
😸
I am so happy I discovered this channel
So are we!!
Meow very entertaining and thankyou! I have painted cats occasionally (thumbnail) but my black beasty hates me and I'm sure is plotting my demise, and yes I have "that" book confirming all the signs are there.
Ha! They certainly are delightfully devious little creatures 😼
Cat paintings freak meowt.
Touché!
Hoping you include Aleksandra Waliszewska in your next one.
Amazing video! Can we please have a dog version? 😍
Purr-fectly fascinating anthology (though please leave the SC door ajar for Nicolas Bentley's illustrations to Old Possum's 1939 poetic tribute). Ta and may all enjoy another nine lives! mb
Many thanks! We’ll have to keep them in mind for a future part 2 😺
😻👍
Japanese cats often have short or even rabbit -like tails.
Cat paintings make catatonic.
I don't trust people that don't like cats😒😋
This writing is too much, lol, like a cross between Letterkenny and Dr. Seuss. I started watching the Zdzisław Beksiński video, but I wanted to see if there were some artists I liked more. Rather than than, I clicked on cats. Not even a cat person. Do not regret it at all.
A lot of fun facts in this video, like Renoit's cat's hair being used to date his work. I would like to learn more about Leonor Fini, and Leonard Foujita. I've seen both of their works before, but haven't really delved in. Funny, in analog fine art parlance it's common to refer to an artist's "practice" as if they are a lawyer. I never use it, and it always sounded funny to me because, as an artist, it sounds like it's one of your "practice pieces" and not one where you are attempting something more serious. Meanwhile, in the NFT community, they never use the word "practice", but instead everything is a "project". I also never use this phrase, as it refers primarily to very large collections of digital images created by programs. I just use "art" and "artwork". I don't want art to be subordinated, as it so often is, to either whatever politics are the flavor of the day, or whatever brand of economics. That's just me, though.
Fair enough! I typically use it in an effort to avoid saying “art” and “artwork” too many times. Fini and Foujita are both fascinating characters, definitely worth looking into!
I was wondering why there's a surge of cat vids in my feed today. It's National Cat Day in Japan today.
Ah cool! We didn’t even know that, just a coincidence. Glad we could contribute to the celebrations! 😺
I think you missed cat daddy Klimt
And his famous cat, “Katze”!
purrfect episode xD

Thank you!! 😺

Right after talking about Sultan the cat in the painting, we see Sultan still going alive and well posed for this video :D
Maybe our little Jimmy is Sultan’s great great great great grandson 🤷🏻♀️
