When people talk about Pluto’s moon Charon being a reason for Pluto not being a planet they mean that Pluto and Charon actually orbit each other also with clear orbit thing, it matters for Pluto because the other things in the Kuiper Belt are very similar in size to Pluto while the objects near the planets are way smaller.
This thing with Charon being very similar to Pluto in size and both rotating each other means that there can't exist binary planets (they wouldn't be considered planets because orbit is not clear and they're like a moon of each other) just like there are binary stars? Man does this means that the twin planets from Outer Wilds are not planets?
@@mateotovar4548 I’m not saying binary planets can’t be planets, I’m just saying why people bring it up. I think the reason why people use it as another thing against Pluto is because when we found Charon we thought it was just a moon but then when we discovered that it was in a binary system with Pluto, we still just called it a moon and not another dwarf planet so we just saw it as Pluto and it’s moon orbit each other.
In highschool one of my english finals involved writing and performing a song (I don't understand either). Specifcally, it was supposed to be a love song. A really interesting argument i saw somewhere was that if some planets were placed were pluto is, they also wouldnt have cleared their orbit, so pluto is only considered a dwarf planet because of its position, not because of pluto itself. Or maybe we should just demote all the other ones that wouldnt have cleared their path there idk.
It's not counting asteroids it's about its largest moon Charon. If Earth was placed there it would still be a planet because it wouldn't have anything 50% bigger than it interfere with its orbit. .
As an astronomy nerd, the counter arguments hurt my soul Titan has an atmosphere, 243 Ida has a moon and its an asteroid, the clear neighborhood means that the debris arond its orbit shold have a mass which is significantly less than the planet which plto doesnt pass. Though it wold be pretty fun
There is one thing I would like to mention with this It actually at times can come out of the Kuiper Belt so much that at times it’s closer to the sun than Neptune
I say it several times when the topic is brought, I have my own classification system, in it the moon, IO, europa, ganymede, callisto and titan are planets while pluto, eris and triton are semiplanets
Since you seem to actualy care: The main problem with pluto being a planet is that we'll have tens or hundreds of planets (depending on definition) if we include all pluto-like objects. Some exhamples are Ceres and Eris if you want to look into it more.
The reason Pluto is a dwarf planet is because of its moon Charon. Charon is half the size of Pluto and due to the rules of something being classified as a planet, a celestial body can only be a planet if 1. It is in a stable orbit around the sun. In which it is. 2. It has to resemble a sphere in which it does. 3. It has to clear other objects in its orbit that is half the size of it or bigger Pluto fails this because of Charon. That is why Pluto isn't a planet and never will be again

Also earth got hit by 2 asteroids the first one was called “Gaia” I believe that was the one that knocked earths axis for seasons and the second was ofc the one that wiped out the dinos
Do you want to know a sloppier definition for a astronomical object? moon. A moon is an object that orbits a planet or something else that is not a star. Which means black hole OJ287 has a moon big enough to fill the orbit of the asteroid belt. So a black hole can by definition be a moon.
Technically Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune shouldn’t be considered planets, because all of those have at least one moon which technically counts as in non-clear orbit.
For the “clearing it’s orbit”, there is actually a pretty solid way to define it. By comparing the weight of the proposed planet to all the things in its orbit, there is a very clear divide between the eight planets (the planet with the lowest ratio being Mars) and all of the dwarf planets. And even though I love Pluto for how interesting it’s surface is, I don’t think I can personally define it as a planet
