    Great job on the windows.
    Quick tip:
    Unless you are a pro with spray foam, keep some acetone for cleanup. Know that it can even dissolve cured oil based paints, so if you need to run tape protections beforehand and pull tape when the foam gets rubbery, it may save a sensitive finish.
    Also, shimming, then running caulk on the outside gives you something to foam against and a much stronger seal against weather and insects. Polyurethane caulk takes a few days to solidify, and needs to be worked with mineral spirits, but it is as solid if not more so than the high performance silicones.

    When you use the foam, always use masking tape on surfaces when you don't want it to stick, it makes cleanup a whole lot easier.

    looks great and very helpful and informative. Planning on replacing 2 broken basement windows, so needed some tips.

    There is no world in which effectively gluing a window in place is ok. These windows have screw holes in the side for a reason.

    My basement windows have 1 inch thick wood all the way around the old window and then concrete foundation around that. Does the wood have to go or can I leave it?

  • @mikemiller7231
    @mikemiller7231 3 роки тому

    It’s the glazing which can be redone if all in all your window isn’t bad just the glazing. Also if you want to keep the old windows reseal deglaze and glaze again

    They make aluminum brackets that you can build a casement for the window. Spray foam will not structurally hold a window sufficiently and also voids the warrrantee. n/m that wooden casement/framing will hold it too.

  • @Galgamoth
    @Galgamoth 4 роки тому +2

    when you took out that structural window did you add a steel lintel above the opening?

    why did the window box need shims/blocks and not fit tight to the drywall? is that to create extra space that is filled with insulation?

    • @DanielRead87
      @DanielRead87 3 роки тому +1

      Just a design choice. You could totally run the drywall up to the window if you prefer

    Hi, did you only use the expanding foam to hold the window in place? Thanks!

    • @SpiritofaHandyman
      @SpiritofaHandyman  4 роки тому +5

      Yes and no. Yes, initially the foam is all that was holding it in place; there are no screws. I used cement around the exterior of the window as an additional support and then the inside has the window box casing and caulking also holding it in place from the inside.
