Basically, it's just like playing your regular 17 keys,
except with this one, you will use the fingers that are already at the back
of your kalimba to play the back keys :D

First off, I need to say that you seriously have a beautiful smile. It’s absolutely captivating.
Now, I can totally see an intermediate-experienced Kalimba player getting into this. As a beginner (about 2 months in) it does seem really intimidating. However, my interest is leaning more towards the chromatic Kalimbas that have all the keys in the front, like with the upwards curved keys mixed in. They seem so incredible. I’m sure my feelings about this will evolve the more advanced I get with Kalimba playing... and if I do develop an interest in this front-to-back chromatic design, I won’t buy one until they come out with a flatboard version! I really do not care for hollow style Kalimbas. Anyway, thanks for showing this! I love your informative reviews!! God bless 🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

Thanks for the review even though I won't be buying a chromatics any time soon. I actually tuned one of my kalimbas to B-flat to help with the "tight" tines. It was mainly my E that was tight. This helped the kalimba a lot.
I love it then! So glad that you did made adjustments to ease the tension on the highest key. ♥️
I tuned my kalimba to A. It was a challenge to lower it a minor third but the sound is much better. The higher tones can finally be heard

I'm researching to build my own special kalimba from the new 21 key I am getting today. Your teaching helps me more than words can say.
I'm at a place in my life where I can truly devote to music and with some guitar experience, I can be sure that the kalimba will be something that I can learn to play in a reasonable amount of time.
I bought three kalimbas 21,17,8, and a spare set of kit replacement for 10,17.

omg ok i had to do the same. idk if you have one by now (you might hehe) but if you don't here's what i did. (btw this all happened in the course of 4 days)
1. i watched a BUNCH of kalimba cover videos and picked out my favorites to show my parents
2a. then i chose which kalimba i wanted. i picked the UNOKKI one on amazon. it was $25 when i ordered it (like 3 weeks ago lol). it came perfectly tuned with no dead or buzzing tines. i was really surprised bc because of covid, i let the package sit outside for a while in the sun to kill any germs. but you can get any kind of kalimba you want :)
2b. since it's not THAAAAT expensive for an instrument, i knew that it would be easier for my parents to say yes to a $25 beautiful instrument.
3. then i **presented** my info to them. within 10 minutes, my dad said yes to a kalimba. (my mom already said yes previously.) i was REALLY surprised they said yes so fast.

Congratulations for your first chromatic kalimba!!! I was really astonished after seeing a kalimba having tines on both sides. This really good. Just wanted to ask, how do we play it? Because there are tines on both sides.
Agree! I was so astonished too! Well, you play it just like a regular kalimba, but you pluck the back tines with your fingers that are naturally placed at the back. ( To adjust, i use a mirror to see the back side. )
Love double-sided kalimbas. It gives an opportunity to use other fingers and yet still hold kalimba in hands. And it gives possibilities for reacher chords sometimes. And by the way, i love how they put tines on the back lower than in front, it's very good idea. On Tracey kalimbas they are on the same level.

yes it is very challenging how to pick the tines on the back exactly 🥺 but this is what we need if the song has many different sharps and flats

Hi Robin,
I believe the back tines are labeled by "laser etching." I like it more than the engraved method. For me, it is more clearly visible especially in bright lighting where the lighting can reflect on the shiny indentations of the engraving and make it hard to read clearly.
I noticed this on the Hluru 21-key kalimba I tried out. It felt kind of "blurry and messy" to my eyes.

I got the same kalimba from their website, but with mine too several of the end tines were dead and it sometimes had really weird vibration throughout so I sent it back. They were honestly very nice about it though!
Try to find flat chromatic kalimba... I have HT hollow chromatic and well... the highest tines aren´t good, but also not dead... Still I am getting a flat chromatic beacuse of the better sound (and electronic pickup which I don´t have on my first one)

@@TipsKalimba so far I like my flat board, I love that the hollow is louder, but my flat board, sounds more sweeter 🥰 I didnt buy a gecko or lingting just generic kalimbas, still waiting on the 21 key, which looks like a hluru, but might just have the same symbol, I picked walnut wood, which I saw in a vid, and loved the sound from it..😅

If the note needed is on the other side. It depends on the song.
to get started play it looking into a mirror, so you can see the underside keys.

I didn't put the stickers on and instead I bought white letter transfers from National Bookstore and affixed them on the tines._*
