@Kimberly G You're such a hypocrite. You commented under this video various of times who deserves to be called out like oMg bLackPink did this and rEd Velvet used african instruments too, call them out too1!1 but THEN *agree* with the comment who said "It's not a big deal, y'all are too sensitive". You're the perfect example of not caring about the actual problem but just wanting to cancel groups you don't like. At this point almost every big group has done something problematic and most of us are aware ot that but this video clearly couldn't include every single incident, it was more to spread awareness. So please take your toxic ass and leave.

Constanza Rojas I grew up being literally the only black girl in my class this type of thinking is common where there isn’t diversity. I remember confusing my classmates when I colored a picture of a person with my brown skin color instead of white and another kid squinted at my paper and said “oh yeah you’re black, I forgot it’s different for you” as if I wasn’t coloring the character black because I’m aware that more black people exist instead of just me. And I wasn’t even able to explain nothing was stopping her from coloring a black character too. I said all this to say that the type of thinking you mentioned starts at a young age and her view of people that looked like me didn’t really expand to her representation of the world when she colored her characters. And it’s not like what she said was malicious, we were only in second grade at the time.

I know , they are not perfect but they are still humans and we all do mistakes. Many countries in the world have different cultures and traditions , we may not know the impact of our actions and we could offend someone but if this one told us what we did is bad and we try to respect it. Should we still be considered as a bad person ? A racist ? Only because we have done this mistake one time in your life. The excuse of, “they’re from Korea they didn’t know” is honestly so dumb. When namjoon from bts himself even apologized for being ignorant at the time one of their songs got a lot of backlash from others. He himself explained the situation and talked about how now he learns about the problems going on around the world just so he won’t offend anyone like he once did. He even has professors check his music so that there won’t be anything offensive on there. And it’s actions like his that show you that he really is apologetic and that idols indeed know what’s going on. Even if they “don’t know because they’re from Korea” they should take at least 10 minutes from their day to know where their fans come from and what they go through. Just my opinion on this matter.

Native American K-pop stans are always ignored, so many idols have been disrespectful to our culture, Soyeon from gidle did a native american war cry, Lia wore a native headdress, Jihyo wore a "native american" outfit and called herself "Indian" but people defend them so much and call us "overdramatic". We just want our culture to be respected, we don't hate the idols, we want people to know that their idols actions can be problematic and unexcusable, same goes for any other culture that is appropriated

tbh i have also worn an "indian" costume like that for halloween (not exactly halloween but it's sth like that in Greece) when i was younger and it wasn't even a big thing in my country. I do understand where you are coming from though but i think i am a little more sympathetic towards stuff like that because i have also been ignorant before and ppl can indeed educate themselves and change their views. But i completely agree with you, the mistreatment of the native american culture needs to be stopped immediately. I feel like South Korea is a lot like Greece on that part and most of the times it stems from ignorance not racism, so it's easier for me to forgive ppl who have done it in the past since those ppl are parts of my family and friends of mine. The thing is if issues like that are not acknowledged and adressed by anyone in the kpop community, then there would be no change so i am glad ppl are speaking up about it and i really hope that happens in my country as well because their ignorance and insesitivety is starting to get on my nerves.

Don't know if people are going to read this but I'm Korean, raised in Austalia but I know enough about my culture to tell you affirmatively that most Koreans are very racist. They're not just racists but anyone who is not considered "normal" (i.e. people with disabilities) are all stereotyped and discriminated against. Its not vocal; as in people dont go around saying it but its silent and it shows in actions. Everyone is so fucking judgemental and everyone praises anyone with blonde hair and blue eyes. The truth is Asians in general aren't educated about cultural appropriation and racism. The main thing is that in terms of appropriation- Koreans love it when a foreigner appropriates them. As in, if someone wore Hanbok and played korean instruments in a performance or used it as a music beat or whatever, they enjoy it knowing that it'll spread awareness of Korea. The difference in attitude is what it is. Even I, who grew up in a white society, didn't really understand the concept of cultural appropriation because in my household, it wasn't ever considered as something bad. Okay, now for the racist part - I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS say that Koreans complain so much about racism towards them when the reality is that Koreans are probs the most racist people I know. Foregin workers are underpaid and disregarded for. It's sad really. From my experience (I go visit Korea almost every year for about a month) I always imagine Korea to be a 1970s~1980s society that is technologically advanced. Our values towards LGBTQ communities, race, gender discrimination... literally stuck in the past. There's no excuses and its time for Koreans to educate themselves and realise that racism and cultural appropriation is absolutely not okay.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk (ps -Im not racist thanks to being faced with racism my entire life in a white society.)

erica marie sis as another black person who loves kpop. It’s super healthy and important to take breaks from listening to kpop because sometimes the racism not only from idols but from fans themselves can be overwhelming.

    • @karinadavis1353
      @karinadavis1353 4 роки тому +125

erica marie I understand this completely. There have been MANY occasions where I wanted to turn away from Kpop because of the racism. I have been a kpop fan for almost 10 years now, and it feels like the racism will never stop. Idols never learn and worse, other Non Black or non dark-skinned fans feed this behavior.
I think the problem is the fans. If fans didn't accept this, companies would not allow this behavior to continue. It's just business. We need to educate Kpop fans willing to be educated. And publicly shun Kpop fans who wish to continue being racist, ignorant, and insensitive to other cultures.
One of the things that I think about these days is how many idols are being cohersed into believing these issues are okay by their companies. For example, Blackpink and their war cry or Jihyo in the "Indian" dress. Both occassions staff/writers allegedly caused this to happen. The idea that idols may be influenced by their superiors to continue doing offensive/racist things is disturbing to me. This is why I believe it is so important for fans to educate other fans and weed out bad fans. If we can create an environment where racist fans are not in control, then we would have more of a say as to what the companies are allowed to let their idols do, as well as additional training on how to be respectful to other cultures(Like BTS when they held a concert in Saudi Arabia).
Sorry that this is so long. I just want you to know that you are not alone in this AT ALL. And so many other people are conflicted in the same way. We need solutions. We need to take action. But when there is so much hate and disgust, it can feel impossible to do.

*Controversial opinion:* I think there's a difference between "cultural appropriation" and "cultural appreciation". Now here me out for a second... there are so many fake woke people nowadays who act like they speak in behalf of every person in a certain culture, even from those they aren't even a part of. I've known so many people who see artists and celebrities using part of their culture as a mark of pride that they're being recognized. As a Filipino, when we saw the PH flag being paraded by Nancy in one of Momoland's music videos I didn't really notice a lot of PH K-Pop fans crying CA and instead was proud that Momoland seemed to have acknowledged us in a way. I've also seen a lot of Spanish fans who feel flattered when Spanish music/sound is referenced in other music because it shows that Spanish music is now internationally recognized.
Of course, there are those in the opposite end of the spectrum who do feel that it is inappropriate. But at the end of the day, as long as it wasn't used mockingly, but instead in a positive way, I believe that a lot of people will be fine with it. Because it really depends on the people themselves whose cultures are being used whether they see it as CA or not. I'm just tired of seeing so many people who have no affiliations whatsoever with the cultures act like they're speaking for "everyone" and try to spark outrage when there's none.
I do acknowledge that idols and companies have to be more informed, but the whole "internet exists" argument seems so misplaced because we know how busy idols can get and how much control companies can have on their education and even freedom so they can't spend as much time "educating" themselves as many of us do who regularly browse the web. Yes, they need to be held accountable, however, no, I don't really know how to get their companies to acknowledge it. But there has to be a better way than just plain outrage and shaming, isn't there? I understand voicing out opinions is important but if it doesn't actually do anything to remedy the situation, maybe we should rethink it a bit to become more helpful? I dunno, but just my two cents on the issue.

I think two of the biggest problems when trying to discuss CA in kpop are:
    1. everyone wants their ults to be the One Morally Pure Group. everyone wants their faves to be superior and puts them on a pedestal, placing unrealistic expectations on them and failing to acknowledge that since idols are human beings, they are most likely going to make mistakes and hold prejudices. This belief becomes so deeply ingrained that fans don't can't fathom it when their faves mess up because it doesn't match the image they've built up in their head.
    2. The majority of stans unfortunately don't care about CA unless it's for clout. Racism is a tool used to bash a group they dislike, instead of actually taking a moment of realise the seriousness of what's going on. CA being weaponized in fanwars completely detracts from any legitimate discussions we try to have.

I agree, idols are still humans and do mess up. But this is also why it baffles me for some people who act like when idols do something bad they were doing so deliberately. Because if that were the case, sure, just give some proof and people will eventually acknowledge it. It happened with Seungri, and he was one of the biggest idols in the industry. This is why a lot of fans just go for the "educate them" route (which a lot of people here seem to disagree with) because if it was indeed a mess-up, then bashing and finger pointing definitely won't help the situation. This is not to say that they shouldn't be held accountable, but people can still be respectful and understanding while doing so. Because I've seen many cases where people believe that idols deserve the outrage and that making them feel worse about their actions is "holding them accountable."

(This is not my own information, I got it from other.)
      1. During Hann and Latata era (G)I-DLE studied many Middle Eastern arts and elements. They spoke with Arabic fans to learn more about the Middle Eastern culture and gave credits to those fans on an interview. (G)I-DLE also got the henna designs done by professionals.
      2. Soyeon who is leader/Main director of the group contacted a Brazilian reporter to learn more about Latin culture, style, music, language and instruments. Not only did Soyeon gave credit to the Brazilian reporter but also let him be a part of their song (Señorita).
      3. (G)I-DLE really wanted to do a hip hop concept for their summer comeback so they did many research on Hip Hop/R&B culture and were inspired by many artists from it. They analyzed the style, the camera angles, and musical genre during the 90s. They were inspired by the musical genre Boom Bap which is a genre you haven’t really heard K pop girls do quiet often.

They received a lot of criticism for their cultural appropriation in debut era, and misogyny in war of hormone, and they took that criticism on board, apologised for their actions, and /actively and visibly changed their mentality/.

I don’t like how people in the comments say that Army’s don’t care about BTS’ mistakes. We actually have a lot on our plates. We just don’t comment on it because it were mistakes they acknowledged, apologized for and never did again. We all know about RM’ s stupid hair he feels embarrassed for ‘till this day ( they are still a lot of memes circulating ) and other things. People also love to mention that he said the N word when singing shinwhas this love on stage. However, it was part of the lyrics the band never got backlash for but RM had to hear a lot because of it and apologized. Also BTS’ Idol is not meant to appropriate but to appreciate cultures. I understand that other fandoms might not understand as they did not see interviews or lives of them explaining their concept but in this case they should not judge too quickly. They explained that they wanted to celebrate various cultures all over the world and said that they used African rhythm, dance moves and that their suits were inspired from African clothes. Whenever American interviewers asked them to do the “Idol dance” they said that it was called Gwara Gwara ( South African dance ). RM also said in a live that he studied about Latin Pop before producing Airplane part 2. I also want to say that when it comes to clothes or hairstyles of Idols it is mostly the companies fault since they are the ones who decide on those things , however, when an Idol behaves inappropriately on occasions where they are more or less independent, there is no excuse.

This annoys me, even as a white person, I often see people wearing braids, using different cultures for 'aesthetic' and even back in the day, using the N word. IT just annoys because these types of things are so easily avoidable. You don't have to say the N word, you don't have to wear that hairstyle. You also don't have to call people with a darker skin of African descent black people because their skin is clearly not black. You also don't have to call those people African Americans because some of them are in no way culturally associated with Africa. You also don't have to call them African because some of them are not African. You also don't have to call them "him" or "her" because you can't assume their gender.
My sarcastic statement above demonstrates how difficult it is to identify a human being without creating labels. You just labeled yourself as a white person. I know many people who are offended by being called "white." Is it okay to call yourself white because you are not offended? If that is the case, is it okay for a person with a darker skin of African descent to call themselves by the N word? That would certainly encourage the use of such offensive word. I have a friend who is 1/4 black whose skull structure, complexion and skin color are classified by his forensics class as belonging to the "Caucasian" group. Can he call himself by the N word? He finds both the words "white" and "N word" to be offensive, so is it justified for anyone to use any of the two words? I would argue that cultural appropriation is more difficult to tackle than you credit it to be.

Suga wore those cornrows a long time ago at a music show, he even had a teardrop tattoo for a photo in one of their photo shoots. The hair gel thing is weird. So many times I've seen kpop stans in Twitter and insta refer to us as "you blacks", and have even seen slurs be thrown out as they try and defend their idol. like why are you stooping so low to the point of outright racism just to defend grown ass men and women who have clearly done something wrong. Your faves are capable of apologizing and not repeating the cultural appropriation and racism they took part in, you don't need to defend them nor do they deserve your defense. As fans, it is your right and responsibility to call out unacceptable behavior, because you have the most influence out of everyone else. If idols see that their fans continue to support them despite racism or other behavior, then they will never change their ways because they think they can get away with stuff like that. Of course everyone deserves a second chance, but when it's someone who hasn't apologized nor shown that they have grown from their wrongdoings, and if they continue their appropriation and racism, then it's time to realize that you're supporting a racist.

KPop is no longer this small industry, it’s spread globally and now has a huge international influence. How they present other cultures is now important.
Especially how anti-black Korea (and therefore Kpop) is as a whole, it’s insane to see how they continue to profit off the culture time and time again.. (Let it be clear that it is not only the black community that is being negatively affected by it, for example G-idle presenting a misrepresentation of native/aboriginal culture)

I really appreciate you using your platform to talk about this. Honestly I do in part look at the idols behavior themselves but I put the blame on the companies that manage the idols. Maybe back 10 years ago when KPOP was not as global as it is now, companies could get away with this crap, but now it’s 2020, and there is going to be a reckoning. I think what will hold Kpop back is the amount of appropriation and the disregard for other people’s cultures that will hinder it from being taken seriously. As a black Kpop fan myself, It gets exhausting seeing stereotypes of black people being used to make an aesthetic. Because we are cool with our hip hop and dreads and the things that make us hip, but we as a people aren’t cool. You don’t know how many times I’ve seen black features like tan or dark skin or curly hair as the butt of jokes in Korean media. These companies need to start having interns from the global to keep them in check and rather than putting down idols and canceling them for good, I hope we can educate and help them understand why some of the things they do are offensive. That is how they can learn and grow, and when that happens, it’s a beautiful thing.

The fact that Korea and its society are very uneducated about these things isn't just an excuse, it is true in many cases and instead of making issues, wouldn't it be better to tell these idols and companies that what they are doing/have done isn't acceptable and why, because saying that 'they need to be held accountable' is true but there comes a point where people are just using this to hate on an idol and negatively impact their career, bringing up things that happened years ago isn't going to help anybody because it happened in the past and we just need to accept that.
    2. With things like concept and clothing, you can't pour all of your hate and lecturing out just on to the idols, because most of the time the company is to blame.
    3. Responding to 'the Wendy incident', yes, i agree that she shouldn't of did what she did, but it wasn't purely her fault, the major at fault was the person who created the question and hating on Wendy and trying to make her seem like a general 'bad' person will not do anybody any good.
Please remember that more goes on in the background than we realise and that we don't truly know whether an idol is purposefully being racist or whether they are misunderstanding or repeating incorrect information, what you could see as culturally inappropriate could be an artist trying to respect and honour a culture.
Attack me as you wish but please keep in mind that I do not mean to offend anybody; if I have offended anybody I am truly sorry. I do not want to start a fanwar or spread negativity.

I don't think things will change given how today is so deep into the idea of protecting and covering for their faves, but have no problem to call out other groups.
