Levon is smiling somewhere...wonderful...
I think I hear Rick's chuckle accompanying Levon's wonderful smile. Tales from the Tour Bus.
I love this! I live 15 miles from St. Martinville where Beau Soleil led the Acadians. this song leaves me with a lump in my throat EVERY time I hear it. some of my family were among those exiled and came here (Bergeron)
Terrible what they did to those French Canadian Catholics
This is so fantastic hearing Amy and friends carrying on this beautiful sublime song and the Band’s legacy. Levon would be so proud.
one of the best songs the band ever played
Acadian/ Cajun proud
YEa i dig this beyond the shawls of Castille
On stage or on a bus in the middle of anywhere, so tight!
This is as pure and real as it gets.
Listening in Dublin Ireland here ... gorgeous harmonies there, great version 👍
your beautiful father would be proud of you.
Heavens opened up and The Band lives on
I absolutely love this song. I've played it for years, but I have to say this is the coolest version I've ever heard!! You guys are so amazing doing this!! And I can't believe how good the sound is! :). It's like a mini-Festival Express...
Oh, and "harmonium" sounds like it should be an element on the Periodic Table! :)
Hell Yeah! That's my church. What a beautiful thing you guys do
was determined to hate this, but instead I love it. wonderfully done!
Beautiful. Gave me hope in a dark time, Easter Sunday, 2020, Covid-19 pandemic.
Thank you very much for this performance.
This is one of my favorite songs. Amy does it well.
That was great, she sounded just like her father. Thanx for posting this.
Over 40.000 visits and just 577 likes???? Seriously???? 😔
I come back to this version often ♥
So beautiful. Just the spirit of the song. Thank you.
So beautifully sung and played! Love it!
Very nice; the sound, the setting and scenery is just a great fit here. A fine cover.
A fabulous version of one of my favorite songs. It truly captures the heart.
Amy has rhythm in her blood.
The very best version of this magnificent song
what a treat! thanks for taking the time to share it!!! Peace
I'm so happy people are keeping this song alive. It still brings tears to my eyes. The Night They Drove Quebec City Down.
The song is about the Acadian Deportation - Quebec City had very little to do with the matter.
Le Grand Derangement Acadie.
@@EdinburghFive The Plains of Abraham are just outside the city of Quebec. It is because of the battle there that the deportations took place. I was obviously tying it in with "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" also by The Band. Talk about nit picking !
Hey @harvey1954 Good to see you are interested in the history of the Acadians. I will politely suggest you do a little bit of research about the timeline of the French and Indian War/Seven Years War. The deportation of the Acadians commences four years (1755) before the Battle on the Plains of Abraham (1759). The vast majority were deported in 1755, more were deported over the next few years. After the fall of Louisbourg in 1758 a further large number are deported. By 1759 the deportations are small and sporadic as the French were utterly defeated in Île-Royale and the rest of old Acadia.
Also, Nova Scotia at this point in history had been a British colony for over four decades and the Acadians there were British subjects.
All this thus demonstrates that your reference to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and "It is because of the battle there that the deportations took place." cannot have been the reason behind the deportation of the Acadians.
You should consider the question - Why, if the Fall of Quebec was the reason for the deportation of the Acadian, who were British subjects in a colony hundreds of miles away, did the British not also deport the French in Quebec?
So, hardly a nitpick.
Cheers
@@EdinburghFive The song deals with the deportations AFTER the battle which ended the French and Indian War. Any deportations before that are not connected to this specific (on the Plains of Abraham where both the French and English generals died in combat). The deportations were following this battle (End up an enemy Over what went down on the Plains of Abraham) which took place outside Quebec City. You're talking about the whole war while I am talking about the one battle mentioned in the song.
this is great, one of my favorite songs by the Band
I could listen to this for the rest of the night... amazing Thanks for sharing
Geez, that's wonderful, Amy. Thanks for sharing!
This such a pleasure to hear and see, how refreshing.
Great version!
I'm speechless... bringing tears...I LOVE THIS! THANK YOU!
if you are EVER in south Louisiana, you must visit St. Martinville and Longfellow State Park and watch the story of the exiles that came here to L'Acadie Nouvelle. ( I live two blocks from La Nouvelle in Lafayette.. .few blocks from Beau Pre)
Damn. That was good. Always dug this song. I'm gonna check out more of your stuff.
Great delivery
Just beautiful...... Thank you Amy and safe travels.
Plastic knife and spoon - Amy Helm

Great song. 👏
always loved Amy..would love to see them work their way to Alberta!!
So great
Sweet...
Nice to hear and watch! Thanks!! P.S. I caught Byrons Big Time Showbiz Debut the other night. HA! ♫
Awesome tune, one of my absolute favourites and now one of my favourite versions. Great harmonies and music. Please post a short video on the guitar chords if you can. I would love to learn this song. I love to play and sing and have not been able to figure this one out or find an accurate lesson on UA-cam . I play the market in Orillia, raising donations for the food-bank and women's shelter and would love to do this song there.
Love the song by The Band, with Levon and Rick Danko sharing the lead! I hope Amy Helm & The Handsome Strangers perform it at the City Winery on November 1 st.
Most of the original recording featured the incomparable voice of
Richard Manuel.
@@jackhanson8695 A man who sadly relapsed and took his own life in 1986.
Is it not the Wolastoq River.....in New Brunswick?
Robby Robertson wrote this. Whar a fine number in a Grayhound Bus ? Thank you for oosting
Wish I could learn the name of that droning keyboard instrument, with the squeeze chamber. Love this song and rendition with the bus undertone. Never seen anyone play the upside-down plastic knife before. :)
On the original 1975 recording, these were the following instruments heard in the song:
Acoustic guitar (open tuned) by Robbie Robertson
Scottish bagpipe chanter by Garth Hudson
Piccolo by Garth Hudson
Accordion by Garth Hudson
Bass by Rick Danko
Clavinet by Richard Manuel
Drums by Levon Helm
Fiddle (Cajun tuned to FCGD) by Byron Berline
If anybody asks me where all the real talent has gone .. I'll tell em it's riding around in the back of a modest tour bus playing acoustic instruments, plastic knives and spoons, somewhere north of the border... while the sun breaks free of the rain.
LOL! Thanks for the love!
when this god forsaken virus is under control and we start having festivals again here in Acadiana, I would LOVE to see you guys down here in Lafayette playing the festivalinternational.org/ descendants of the acadians exiled here (the cajuns) would LOVE this.
The Acadian were not exiled to Louisiana. They went there of their own accord after being exiled to other places.
If only it had the pipes it would be perfect.
And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle
Love it!!!
