I used to play this song in my repertoire on the folk scene in Toronto, but then my mama was stolen, killed by her sons, and I had to fight for justice for her and the music disappeared from my life. Being a creative here with such siblings against me, the betrayal, destroys the soul. I used to feel but they stole it. Still waiting for justice so I can begin to grieve, and maybe get back to the creative work. The band was my first inspiration. I'm of Irish Celtic heritage too.

A long time fave. Remember hearing it joyriding in Dad,s car with my older brother as we explored logging roads in Northwestern Ontario as preteen. Guess what. Today I am a songwriter. Likely, because of this song.

    • @EdinburghFive

The song’s lyrics are supposed to be about the deportation of the Acadians from the region we know today as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island yet it focuses on Quebec. The Battle on the Plains of Abraham was only tangential to what took place in Acadia/ Nova Scotia.
So, here is a very short history of Acadia/Acadians:
      - French colony of Acadia established in 1605.
      - French and British flight over this very strategic colony for the next century. It was one of the most fought over places in North America.
      - France ceded Acadia for the last time to Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht
      - The British run the colony until 1749 with benign neglect. The British maintain a small garrison and administrative authority at Annapolis Royal and a small fishing station at Canso. Acadians for the most part are left alone to get on with life and they flourish.
      - The Acadians provide an oath of loyalty and an understanding of neutrality in any conflicts between the British and the French.
      - France throughout the period continues to destabilize the region. In the 1740s and into the 1750s France ramps up its effort to destabilize the region. France tries to get the Acadians to side with them but mostly fails. Some Acadians do support French efforts. The French supply, arms, and use the Mi’kmaq in their efforts to regain control of Acadia/Nova Scotia.
      - At the Battle of Grand Pré, during the War of the King George’s War/War of the Austrian Succession, Acadians are found aiding and fighting with the French troops, Canadian militias, and Mi’kmaq.
      - Halifax is established in 1749 as a counterpoint to the French fortress of Louisbourg. Lunenburg settled in 1753. No more benign neglect in the management of the colony. The Acadian population remains about four or five times that of the British population.
      - Between 1749 and 1755 both France and Britain militarize the region by building a number of forts.
      - At the onset of the French and Indian War/Seven Years War, Acadians are found fighting with the French troops at the Siege of Fort Beauséjour (1755).
      - In 1755 the Nova Scotia colonial government asks the Acadian population of Nova Scotia to provide a renewed and unqualified oath of loyalty. The Acadians refuse. Trust in the Acadians has been broken and they are seen as a large body of potential French allies. In 1755 about 7000 Acadians are deported to the British American colonies from Massachusetts to Georgia. Many Acadians escape deportation and along with the Mi’kmaq carry on a guerilla war against the British. As Acadians are caught they are deported.
      - Fortress of Louisbourg falls to the British in 1758. Acadians and French on Île-Royale and Ile Saint-Jean are deported to England and France.
      - The Fall of Louisbourg opens the St. Lawrence River to the British.
      - In 1759 the British lay siege to Quebec City. The Battle on the Plains of Abraham is a major loss for the French. The City of Quebec falls five days later.
      - The French still have an army based at Montreal.
      - Montreal capitulates in September 1760. The French are defeated in North America
      - French possessions in North America are ceded to Britain and Spain under the 1763 Treaty of Paris.
      - From the latter half of the 1760s Acadians in small numbers immigrate from the various British North American colonies to Louisiana. In the 1780s a large group of exiled Acadians residing in France immigrate to Louisiana. We know descendants of these Acadians as Cajuns.

@@EdinburghFive you expect such details to be put in this song? I live a block from La Nouvelle (Acadie) and a couple blocks from Beau Pre in Lafayette. The Cadienne (or Cajuns) including my family have a rich heritage here dating back to Beau Soleil arriving in the St. Martinville/Loreauville area. This song is a beautiful homage to their story.

    • @EdinburghFive
      @EdinburghFive 2 роки тому +2

Hey @Philip Earl McG Good to hear from you.
It really is a great song.
As for your comment "you expect such details to be put in this song" - I never said or implied all the detail I set out above should be incorporated into the song. If you go back and read Joanne M's post, she was looking for a bit of the historical background of the deportation of the Acadians. That is what I provided.
Back to the song. The reason for my other comments with respect to the song is that some people use the lyrics as learning mechanism about the historical facts of the deportation of the Acadians. The lyrics are simply wrong and thus people using the lyrics as facts will be misinformed. Songs are songs and should not be used as factual historic narratives at the best of times. The errors in the songs lyrics I suspect are because Robbie Robertson just did not know much about the event. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham is more widely known and for anyone with little knowledge of the events of the Seven Years War period it would be easy to misconstrue the facts about the Acadian deportations.
There is a lot of misunderstanding about what happened. Many people for example still believe the British deported the Acadians to Louisiana.
      Cheers
