    See as a younger guy im getting into the stuff and shocked that its been around for as long as it has. Sadly though im getting into it at a time that its been long obsolete. I asked my dad whos a medium/heavy duty diesel tech about if he ever worked with this stuff and he goes "Son this stuff was dyin out when I was a young mechanic and that was 25+ years ago." Ever since I found out about gear splitters I told my buddies, im gonna get me a 6V-53 Detroit, a 5 or 6 speed manual behind it and either an Eaton 2 speed rear end or an aftermarket gear splitting kit. Ima build the coolest truck around. I LOVE the old long nose Peterbuilt semi's and the square body Pick ups. Im gonna cram that whole set up into an old square body crew cab long bed dually. Idc what brand it is

    Great video. In 1971 and 72 as a high school junior and senior drove an 8-horse IH 1800 Loadstar van from MD up and down the the coast splitting every shift - precious cargo appreciated the smooth ride. Love your videos. Thank you and God bless you.

    In Mexico we know the 2 speed axle as "dual", and is very usefull. Your engine sounds great, but I think it sound more like a DT 360 to me than a DT 466 (the DT 360 is one of my favorites because is easy to repair and works very good.

    I worked at Komatsu where they built off highway trucks, loaders and excavators. They had a semi with a triple wide trailer that they had built. So in order to take a semi built truck from the assembly line to the paint and for shipping they would load the truck onto the trailer, drive it outside to the other side of the same building and sometimes back it in, or drive it into the building. That was my job for the most part. And as I did this i would shift through the gears. Other times I would have them load up an excavator and I would take it down the road to an all steel plate area for them to unload it with big steel ramps for their testing they did, so there i could run through quite a bit of gears.

    Excellent tutorial. Beats the old double-clutching between the axles. The old school buses I road had to be double-clutched - well, the bus driver did whether it actually had to be or not. To see you go between ranges without having to clutch at all surprised me. I guess it’s been too long since I’ve been in a big truck.

    • @khtractors
      @khtractors  2 роки тому +6

      I started out clutching during the axle shifts and later learned it does better without the clutch. The bus you rode may not have had a synchronized transmission which would require double clutching. Thanks for watching!

    How's she goin'? I have never driven a truck with a splitter but I have driven with someone who was jamming the gears. The splitter sure helps when hauling gravel or heavy loads and the terrain is uneven and hilly. Thanks for posting this Ben. Take care!!!

    Thanks for the demonstration man. I’ve always discredited 2-speed rear axle trucks on account of folks saying you end up down more with a 2-speed axle. What has your experience been? Have you towed much with one? When folks end up with a downed 2-speed rear axle . . . is it usually for the “splitter” being stuck? Sorry for all the questions - Samuel

    • @khtractors

      Most issues come from misuse. Electrical wiring problems can be an issue as well, and on older trucks vacuum worked the shifter so any vacuum leak would give you fit until found. I struggled for awhile with shifting it but I’m getting better now. I’ve only had the truck a year. Thanks for watching!

    All things considered, would you prefer the 5/2 combo or would a 6+1 transmission be better in your eyes?
    Project Yellow has what I think is a Clark 5 speed. I need to check the model to see if it is a direct 5th or overdrive. Good video!

    • @khtractors
      @khtractors  2 роки тому +2

      I would love to drive a 6+ transmission and see how it’s gears are setup. If it eliminates that gap between 3 and 4 that would be great. But I see a lot of people needing to replace the 6 plus vs a 5 speed. I think a good 13 speed would be awesome. Thanks for watching!
