My sound experience was totally different on the 4k disc, all the ear level speakers stayed engaged and my subwoofer rumbled the house, but there could have more sound coming from the atmos speakers.
My experience was closer to yours. It was not as flat or compressed as I expected. It matched the Dolby theatrical presentation quite well. It's not bombastic like John Wick, but it's not as muted as some Disney mixes. It's interesting how Adam gives this a B- while Hidefdigest site gives it 5 stars. Note- I run a Trinnov/ATI system with Martin Logan speakers and 4 subs, so my experience may be more unique than others.
Overal I did think the sound experience was kinda lacking. The quality of the sound was fine for me, but quite honestly I wasn't feeling much of a sound bubble. This is not the kind of movie to watch if you want to be blown away by Atmos sound design, at least. Or heck, even for regular surround it would've been kinda weak.
@thenonexistinghero I think it has to do with expectation bias and being spoiled with so many great mixes in recent times. Animation lends itself to having over the top, aggressive mixes (Into the spiderverse, Puss in Boots: Last Wish), and Super Mario, being a AAA title, (highest grossing movie so far) should've been outstanding. But it's more than serviceable. Not every movie is going to be reference. It would be like penalizing Avatar 2 with a medioce score for its restrained mix, though it's still great in general. But I "expected" better.
I didn't see it in the cinema, but yes the grain was very noticable on the 4K blu-ray. Maybe that's something they've added, or perhaps it's something that isn't as noticable in cinema. Either way, I wasn't a huge fan. I think real film grain is fine, but fake grain can often make it look like there's some compression artifacts or that the image quality is a bit less (and it will be especially bad on a streaming platform). While the film does look very good, I do think the usage of fake grain in this movie is a flaw. Heck, I think the most beautiful parts of the movie are where the grain is the least noticable.
Probably because there's a huge amount of idiots who consider movies without film grain to be unwatchable and would rather have fake grain than no grain. I think grain can have its place in certain movies, but for movies with the heavy use of CG and CG movies, I'd say a perfectly clean look is what fits best.
With how bright and vibrant that movie is, the steelbook design is such a letdown. Could've been a gorgeous steel, but they went the laziest route possible
Brilliant review! I really enjoyed this film and I'm really looking forward to grabbing a physical copy. The picture alone sold me! It comes out next month here in Australia.
Great review Adam! I don't have surround sound and had to turn up my TV from it's usual spot. Also I do like the steel. But oh man does that thing pick up fingerprints.
If you’re not gonna go out of your way you might want to check the store, because in NYC it’s not listed as being available on the websites but when I was in target and Best Buy‘s they had it. (I was able to get a copy in store even though it’s listed as not available online)
@@aguardiantype7169 Loved Into the Spider Verse. Supposedly it's great in Coco, but I haven't seen the 4K blu-ray yet (and it's an amazing movie. For some reason also missing on almost every list that lists more recent Disney CG movies. I guess Disney hates their non-woke movies).
it's better than I thought, as I always have low expectations for video game adaptation films anyways, I picked it up in 4k after watching this review and wife and I enjoyed it.
@@MovieGuy365 - I know Adam, was just pulling ya leg! I read your community post about this the other week but it seems some of your other viewers didn't and so have been commenting asking what happened to full reviews on your channel.
Great review Adam. Did anyone ever figure what the real release date is. Out of 4 stores in my area only one had the movie in store and the rest you had to pre-order it. Anyway, I got the regular 4k slip cover edition just because no one else had the movie in store.
Brick and Mortar stores put out their stock yesterday because the original SDS said 6/6, but universal last minute changed the date to 6/13 and online retailers are sticking to that date.
My dad was a gamer back when it first started. Original Atari, Commodore 64, all those old school games. Mario Bros. was definitely a big part of that game lineup.
Amazon sent me a confirmation that it’s being released next Tuesday. Probably one of the most boring Steelbooks ever. So glad I got the regular version.
I was SOOOO disappointed in this BORING, lazy steelbook! There was so much beautiful, colorful, highly detailed poster art for this movie, and then they go with THIS?! I ordered the Star tin set from Walmart instead, that's at least WAY more creative and cute than this.
I disagree that Princess was too much of a girl boss. That said, I'd give the movie a solid 7/10. It did what I wanted it to do, but it wasn't groundbreaking. Just solid. Which is fine. Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong was the weakest part. I did love Toad. That SB sucks though. I'm getting the slip version.
But she was. She was so talented she did the obstacle course in a single try and almost defeated Bowser. And there's also many other moments that kinda show she isn't really the regular Peach. In the games she wasn't just capable, but also very elegant and feminine. But in this movie they made her quite a tomboy in terms of personality. Sure she was feisty at times in the games, but in here it's beyond that and she's a straight up tomboy. I think Peach's personality was the weakest part of the movie and she was the only character that felt out-of-character to me.

They should have inverted the steel books artwork. The mushroom should be in the interior and the landscape should have been on the exterior.

That steelbook artwork. Woof. I may settle for slipcover on this one.
Slip is significantly better. Not sure why it's a may like it's a tough choice lol
Thanks for the upload.
I was shocked at the amount of film grain. I’m watching on a Samsung QD-OLED and the grain was extremely noticeable.
really? i saw it on 85inch display at The Brick and it was so clear it was almost translucent

@@thenonexistinghero someone finally said it, thank you
Same here. On my S95B I was let down with the grain. This might be one of those movies better with a Dolby Vision TV
I wonder what the reasoning behind adding film grain is, they did the same thing with the Blu-Ray of Minions The Rise Of Gru.

I'm pretty fond of it actually. I do like the regular case as well, but I also think this looks really nice on my shelf.
Brilliant review! I really enjoyed this film and I'm really looking forward to grabbing a physical copy. The picture alone sold me! It comes out next month here in Australia.
I was able to get this movie ( not the steel book) at Walmart along with John Wick 4 at my local Walmart. I think they released John Wick 4 early.

I have a 7.2 system that I use as a 5.1 system . My TV Is A BenQ HT2550 4K UHD Projector . So Are You Saying The BluRay Looks Better Than The 4K
Will still pick it up. The 4K with the slip cover. Thanks Adam 👍.
What?? its out already??
Did you get transformers steelbooks?
For some reason it hasn't been released yet in the UK and we don't even have a proper date yet for release

I heard the UK gets their physical media release a week after the US.
Need a 3D version.
Re: animated films with bombastic Atmos:
I thought Mulan(original) and Encanto had some great Atmos.
What other ones am I missing?
Into the spider verse is supposedly great, same with heavy metal
@@aguardiantype7169 Yes! Forgot about that one.
Pixar's Brave I believe! First film ever released in Dolby Atmos.

The Girl Boss: "He's nobody"

Good haircut king, looking slick. Bad movie imo but any 4k sale is good for the format

I hate artificial film grain also this steelbook is so bland! They seriously could've done a better job with it instead of just a mushroom.
