  • Billie Eilish has been killing it recently with a Vogue magazine cover and new world tours. In her magazine article, she mentioned about how she was abused when she was younger. This hugely impacted her psychologically. This is very interesting considering that we know she has Tourette’s Syndrome. In this video, I go through what Tourette’s Syndrome is, the type of Tics Billie gets and how she controls them.
It takes her a load of planning to keep it under control especially while she’s stressed. That being said, major props to her for keeping up with the tour and active lifestyle while managing her condition. She certainly is an example to many people out there who are finding it difficult to get by with the condition. For anyone watching this video with Tourette’s Syndrome, I wish you health and happiness.

My older brother passed away from being an alcoholic because my parents always bashed him and yelled at him for having vocal and physical Tourette’s. I tried my very best to get him help but my mom even said “I don’t think it’s that bad he can control it.” And he didn’t think he had Tourette’s but he had severely hurt himself because of how he didn’t understand his tics. Even after his passing I still catch myself watching education videos about Tourette’s and how to help him. I am so happy that you made this video and put it in a way that so many people can understand by relating it to a celebrity.

One of the things I love the most about Billie bing famous and having tourettes: she does not have a cursing tic. Why you might think it's important? Cause that's what most people think of when you mention it. You start talking about tourettes and people instantly go "isn't that when people curse a lot?"
No it's not. In fact, only about 1 in 10 people with tourettes having cursing tics. So really, most people with tourettes don't curse. This includes Billie. Since she's so famous it can help people undersrand the condition a bit more.

@@DrSermedMezher No problem. I myself do have Coprolalia (that's what the cursing tic is called). As much as it's part of my condition it just saddens me that that specific part is what tourettes get associated with since it's of course the most obvious and dramatic kinda tic, while a simple blinking tic can be jusr as annoying. Tourettes isn't just one thing. It's a spectrum

I agree! My Tourette’s tics are almost identical to hers and it’s always so hard to explain to people that not all Tourette’s victims have the swearing/hitting tics. It can be so minor as blinking, or a head/neck tic like she experiences.

Billie Eilish is a real hero of mine. She is fearless and talks quite candidly about her efforts to allow herself to keep control of her life and not let
this malady define her. I hope she continues to express herself so magnificently and she inspires some who are overcoming great hurdles to not
despair. I hope her fans are enriched and not her producers or handlers. I hope she can take pride in how much her candor encourages us.
Remember, not too long ago, nobody would have talked about this? She's not alone and because of her, we're not alone either.

      Hi Lucie,
Thank you for the comment and compliment. I think my background in medical research gives me a slightly different take on evidence and how it's compiled. Being a doctor isn't just about recommending medications but understanding the whole person and finding the best thing for them, whatever it may be. Sometimes that isn't medication - I hope that helps you gain some insight into my rationale and looking forward to seeing you around the channel more.

      Tourettes in the Bible:
"...I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting."-Mark 9:17-29
      Translation:
A father brought to Jesus his teenage son who has had these symptoms below since he was a child. He:
      -throws himself into the fire
      -hurts himself
      -becomes weaker (pineth away)
      -froths from the mouth (epilepsy)
      -clenches teeth
-thrown down to the ground (teareth him)
-thrown in the water to drown
Jesus taught the disciples to cast out demons in His (Jesus's) name, but the disciples could not cast the demon out of this boy. That's why Jesus said "how long am I going to be with you?", (because Jesus was going to be nailed on the cross soon), the disciples need to know how to cast demons out before Jesus leaves the world. So Jesus casts the demon out. The demon was strong and was latching onto the boy so much that the boy went into convulsions and finally laid still and appeared like he was dead, but Jesus lifted him up by the hand and he was fine. Then the disciples asked why they couldn't cast the demon out and that's when Jesus tells them that this kind of demon can only come out of a person through praying and fasting (not eating).
Doctors aren't miracle workers, but Jesus is, because Jesus is the Son of God. When Jesus heals people, it's complete, never partial, and certainly never with strings attached. Whomsoever the Son sets free, is free indeed.

10:27 About that, for me the thing that stops the tics is just something that calms me down. It can be anything that basically distracts me. I think it’s something individual for every person. As you said earlier, the tics are caused by anger/stress so it’s logical to get distracted from these tics and calm down from the anger, and then they kind of fade away. I personally just play music/ yt or anything that makes a sound, so I can focus on the lyrics/ what someone’s talking and ‘forget’ that I’m having those. That’s why I don’t think the things that ‘stop the tics’ can be defined any further than ‘something that calms and distracts you’. Tho It’s really just my experience. If you want to ask any questions I will be happy to answer.

My daughter has TS. She used essential oils a lot when she was little. It really helped her. Meds haven’t worked and the side effects are pretty gnarly. One thing I wish you had talked more about was the disinhibition that comes along with TS. It’s a disorder of neurological disinhibition and doesn’t just involve tics. Behavior, thoughts, and even emotions pop and roll like tics. OCD and ADHD are very common for people with TS. Instead of throwing a bunch of diagnoses at kids, I wish they would use a “type” or “level” system for TS like they have for ADHD and Autism. Some kids just have the vocal and motor tics, others have tics plus anxiety and OCD symptoms, others have tics, anxiety/OCD and ADHD symptoms. It would simplify the diagnostic process, reflect the reality that TS is a spectrum and steer people away from the assumption that normal interventions will be effective.

I have Tourette’s. Mine is not nearly as intense as billies. Unless you were around me for a good length of time, you wouldn’t know I had it if I didn’t tell you. But for me, suppressing feels like holding my breath. I need to breath, and the longer I hold it the deeper the breath I will take when I finally breathe. My tics are just like that. Sometimes when I hold them back, when I do tic, I may have a small tic attack especially when I was younger. I’ve gotten really good as suppressing them with age and I’ve even somewhat grown out of them. They aren’t completely gone, but not nearly as much as when I was a child. When I was a kid, my tic was a throat noise. Now it’s a nose wrinkle. Rarely sometimes I’ll need to make an “arrrrrr” sound.
One thing I find harmful for me is watching all these tic tokers or you tubers with intense Tourette’s because I find myself mimicking their Tourette’s sometimes just in that moment. I feel like if I watched a lot of it my Tourette’s could get worse. Which makes me believe that those Tourette’s camps people send their kids to is a horrible idea. Honestly The less I think about it, the better it is.
If I smoke weed, it has to be indica, sativa will give me anxiety and make my tics worse. Cbd does not give me anxiety and is relaxing, but not very potent so it only helps a little bit. But I also haven’t tried any high quality cbd.
I also have ADD and depression. My doc told me their are some connections with Tourette’s and ADD. So when I was a kid I was on Zoloft and Ritalin and eventually switched to Zoloft and adderall in my teens. They really did help and I wish I could get back on them. But after suffering from addiction in my mid-late 20s, I can’t get a doc to prescribe me any medication. I’m sober almost 2 years. After addiction it’s hard to get back into the swing of normal life especially with add and depression. Most days I can’t remember simple things like brushing my teeth or eating. I’ll go all day without eating till I get tunnel vision and nearly pass out. I can’t stay on a schedule. Mental health is the shits.

Also, if i recall correctly i was offered to go to some kind of support group for people with tourette but on the other hand they said that a big downside to that is that people will start copying each other's tics. I laughed when i read that you do the nose wrinkle. I had that one too. Still do sometimes. And now that i read about it i feel the urge growing.

It is not uncommon for people to automatically suppress in certain situations. This can include social situations, performances, anything requiring focus etc. I have tics induced by a drug. There's a condition called Tardive Tourettism, it's indistinguishable from Tourettes and my tics behave this way. I'm sure the oils are soothing and may lower the stress triggering tics. Lavender may especially help stress though it likely doesn't directly impact tics. Do what works for you.

1:41 You're probably wrong there. The basic mechanism of Tourette's is a permeativity of the Basal Ganglia, where impulses cannot be regulated the ordinary way. I control it with a meditative "concentration." I suspect most Tourette's people can control it pretty well, and that they are unaware that they have Tourette's. I understood it first in my late 50:ies. Secondly: I'm a programming teacher. I usually don't tic in public. I use to explain to people that I have Tourette's only if it is necessary, such as if they have ADHD or are Autists, (or treat with such people) and need to know that they aren't alone and it is possible to develop strategies to overwin their situation. I'm kind of a Tourette's person, but that's only a minor part of what I am. So of course Billie Eilish isn't very open with it: she isn't Tourette's, she is herself.

    • @richbikelife
      @richbikelife 2 роки тому

I've also noticed this as well...I think it can be anything you associate with stress...like if you don't like certain smells then it stresses you out and then you tic. I'm an adult in my 30's and my tics never went away. My parent's still won't admit anything is wrong with me but have told me when I was little kid the doctors put me in a room alone to observe me and said " oh he blinks different and moves his nose a lot but will grow out of it" when I tell them I have tourette syndrome they just stay quiet. I've always been hyper sensitive to other people ticking too. One time, one of my friends told me that everybody thought I was a very serious and intense dude, but really I was just trying to control it and hide it the whole time I was with them...none of them stayed my friends and now that I'm older I just except that nobody sticks around for long when you have this type of condition.

I suffer from tics and I'm also on MMJ patient I have found that combining essential oils as well as taking 50 mg of Benadryl or any type of muscle relaxer as well as either doing an inhalation or doing an edible usually gives me about almost close to 4 to 5 hours of 98% of my normalcy. Before completely having another tic or having a complete attack. And as for your question ask for me as an individual MMJ does help but not by itself it definitely requires you to take it in different ways I have to inhale it, take it orally and I still combine it with Benadryl and I also take multivitamins to help like magnesium.

My 11 year old son was diagnosed with TS 2 years ago. It wasn't until this month that his verbal and physical tics overwhelmed him emotionally. I was desperate and began doing heavy research on alternatives. I found an alternative that in non-invasive and I'm surprised more people don't spread the word of this. It doesn't eliminate TS but it controls majority of the urges while administered. It's a mouth guard that relieves the pressure to the central nervous system that regulate movement. I've found a few doctors that record the before and after and shared them on youtube. I did have to do a bit of digging for this but as you mentioned, if the pharmaceutical companies aren't pouring money into research, what's the cost benefit. Horrible contribution to society and humanity. It's a similar concept to TMJ. My son has his appointment in a few days for his fitting with a local doctor. I HIGHLY urge anyone to keep hope up that there is alternatives that don't require surgery. Here's a like to the video: ua-cam.com/video/PXGd-v4TAO8/v-deo.html

Tourettes and tics are linked with anxiety as well. Essential oils may help her to relax therefore calming the tics. I use a lavender heat pack. It really is just dependant on the person. Sadly the petition to get tourettes researched more got to 50,000 not 100,000 signatures in uk meaning it's not going to get looked into for sometime. Leaving children and adults helpless with the disorder as nobody has any guidance.

Tic suppression is actually a focus of many of the psycho therapies around Tourette’s and tic disorders which aim to help the tics reduce in frequency long term. Yes, it can increase the frequency short term but generally this doesn’t cause significant harm. Each case is unique of course and you would have to consult your doctor before making any changes to your condition.

You are talking like you know how it really feels. Maybe listen to the community and stop telling people to suppress. This video is a little miss leading and it bothers people who suffer with TS when people talk as if they really know how it is. Not yelling at you but please don't try to say it doesn't harm to suppress. Because it does and the problem is not knowing how to suppress but how society reacts to our condition.
