the carbon spring has to be adjusted relative to weight. Most of these springloaded shoes is designed for runners like eliot kipchoge, i would guess. And he is under 60 kg? a 100 kg runner would probably crush the spirng and not get nearly the same benefit from the foam or the carbon spring. You probably get some benefit, but it seems like there should be various options for different weights.
How would these shoes do as walking shoes? Any particular one stand out for that? (I know they may be considered “overkill” for walking, as these seem to be high performance running shoes, but I just wonder).
You’re right. None of them are designed for walking. But I would say the Saucony were the best to walk around in. They were super comfortable and the rocker was not too aggressive. The mizuno you’d probably fall over in!
AlphaFly has been my shoe of choice. I went 3:30:01 in the AF V1 in May 2023. In the AF V2 in Oct 2023 I went 3:23:30 (3min adjusted for bathroom break) , and then approx 3:13:XX (2min+ adjusted for bathroom and turnaround fiasco on course) in the AF V3 this past Sunday. Now my training for each of these marathons has been significantly better than the previous. But the shoes played a part. The AF V1 was and still is too much shoe for me for the marathon. The 4mm drop destroyed my calves by 36km and when I felt I could have pushed harder, my calves threatened to lockup, so I just had to hold pace. The AF V2 was a great shoe, but it was heavy and bulky feeling in the final 10k. But given I was running in a post tropical storm with flooded trail sections and driving rain, the shoes were like flooded canoes. The AF V3 is the best shoe I've ever worn, they disappear on feet, show zero wear at 120km and I plan to race in the same pair at Chicago 2024. The changes to the midsole really were exactly what I needed, and having a super shoe that I don't even notice on feet yet still delivers is crazy! Given that you have been a VF user, my bet is the Sky Paris would be your best option. The weight drop over the Mizuno and Hoka is unfair, not to mention the improvements via FFTurbo+. All the shoes you tried are great shoes, and for the average sub 3hr to 3:45hr runners would serve them well. But given your goals, your margins as so slim. Weight matters.
Great comments! I had a pair of V1 alphafly years ago but they definitely felt like too much shoe for me. I loved the vaporfly V1 which had a lower stack height and that was my race shoe of choice the last few years. But I think you’re right - the Sky might be the one to change that!! Thanks for your comment!
@@global-runner Sky Paris feels amazing on long repeats over the track: smooth and propulsive but a little flat respect the Elite. The ride is similar but less rockered as Elite as. Two incredible shoes. Go hard with Sky😀💪🏻
As an 'old school' runner we are a bit hard-headed. We would do all road work in the Onitsuka Tiger Marathon 1971. (yup) As I see all the influencer videos today It's not easy for me to digest them. But I took a shot & bought a modern-day energy return shoe. Tried it yesterday for hill repeats for the first time. (I'm 68 years old) I absolutely love them. They actually make a difference. I now believe what he's saying 100%. 😂
The Rebel is a good shoe! If there’s nothing wrong with it and you’re doing one session I don’t see the need to rotate but another decent road shoe is the Nike Streakfly. It’s more minimal than the Rebel but it has zoom x foam. Not everyone likes it but I certainly do.
It’s definitely about the shoes!! At the 2.35 mark, carbon plates are helping on race day 3 minutes plus. Given training benefits in respect of recovery and injury prevention the aggregate marathon race benefit is greater still. 4% has a meaning.
Good question. I had a previously pair of alphaflies but I found them to be too much shoe for me. So I stuck with the vaporfly. So I think vaporfly is my Nike choice. I was tempted to buy the alphafly, try them out, and then send them back if I didn’t like them, but I felt a bit bad doing that. What do you think? Is that bad form to do that?
Such a cool store, and excellent video! As someone eyeing up a first marathon I think I’m going to go for the endorphin pro 4 as a comfortable entry racer! May try it out in a half here in New Zealand in June! Good luck on the sub 2:30 quest.
I ran my last marathon in the Metaspeed Sky Paris and have no complaints. Ran the previous couple in the original Sky and it's my favorite race shoe of all time. Curiously, I've never owned another pair of Asics running shoes despite always having like twenty shoes in my "rotation" (some will go a year between wears).
What a great group of shoes! I’m a bit biased and have selected the EPro 4’s for racing this year (and maybe one or two next year?!) but each of these are fantastic choices.
Jeremy chose them! Not all of them were my size but he gave me a great selection to pick from! The EPro 4s felt so comfortable. But I think the weight factor is the thing that has me leaning towards ASICS! Thanks for the comment!
Great video!! I tried many of those shoes at the Olympic trials in Orlando. I agree that HOKA is damn ugly. However they were fun. It’s a circus shoe lol. I was gifted a pair of On Cloudboom 3. $290!!! They are fast. But very little support for 26.2. Definitely go with ASICS.
Wow you must be FAST! Do you mind me asking…? Yeah the cloud boom Echo 3 feels like a great shoe. But it’s CAD$370 before tax. You just can’t justify it when you can buy proven performers for way way less. I think it’s boiling down the vaporfly or metaspeed for me! Thanks for your comment!!
Great video. I have my fair share of super shoes. Vaperflys and Alphafly have HUGE hype as they should be. Super fast shoe and reliable for any race. I've run some fast times in both of them. Having said that, the Asics MetaSpeed Sky have also never let me down. the more I race now a days, the more I lean towards the Asics for some reason. I think the big reason why, is I find them more comfortable then other super shoes. What kind of watch do you wear? looks like the 965? that's what I wear. light weight and gives me all the stats I need to run fast in my mid 40's.
Thanks for sharing that info! I’m desperate to get my feet in some ASICS metaspeed sky. I have high hopes for them! (Hope I’m not disappointed!) Yeah I have a 965 watch. I love it. It gives me an actual number as to how ready I am for training, which is huge. Before I had the watch I’d think “I feel tired but I’ll still run” and then I’d probably get injured. Now I can see my score is (say) a 10 and I know that I’d be an idiot to run. (Sometimes I still do though - ha!). That said, I almost never rest when it tells me to. I have a better idea of what training I have coming up than the watch does so I overrule it quite a lot. Great piece of kit though.
@@global-runner with my training readiness and load ratio, I usually run through them as well, I just won't do a workout if I have any numbers low. But I do spread out my workouts where I know I'm rested and I know I will have a higher score unless I'm sick or getting bad sleeps becasue of my kids waking me up.
Yeah you’re 100% right - it’s a tool like any other. And you have to know when to use it and when not to. But man is it good having that data!! Always reminds me to be kinder to myself when things aren’t quite where they should be due to life getting in the way!

That’s true. But I also weigh about 60kg…
Are you allowed to stop to tie laces in marathon or be disqualified?
If they’re your laces it’s no problem. If you’re tying other people’s laces together then you would probably be disqualified. :)

I’m sure you meant Muzuno Flash 2 has glass fiber plate, the Pro 2 has a carbon fiber plate
Jeremy thought it was fibre glass but we may be wrong. Thanks for clarifying that! Appreciate it.
It's actually a "carbon infused" nylon plate, so not a true carbon plate either
Endorphin Elite or Sky Paris for a full Marathon at these pace?
I haven’t tried any of those unfortunately. I’m hoping to try the sky paris soon though
