      Maybe! But in 2017 I ran 2:26 for the marathon when I was in 33.30 shape for 10k. It’s a stretch goal in Montreal but I think I can do it. The gravel, the altitude etc all meant my 10k time was slower. It’ll be exciting either way…! Thanks for tuning in!

      @@global-runner My guess is that it was’nt a 10k effort if yr HR average was 160. Assuming you can also average 160 HR for the marathon you should be good for your goal time. Just a endurance question at this point, no issue with the pace required

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 20 годин тому

      that’s true. I’m definitely no longer scared of the pace which I was at the start of the build. Top of my wish list would have been more miles in the build but I had to manage that toe injury and I got some decent long ones in notwithstanding!

    Brilliant performance and the scenery looks stunning - well done! The bouncer also did a sterling job! Out of interest, are you traditionally more of a speed or endurance monster - or both?! I find I need to dial in my speed work more during marathon prep

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 2 дні тому

      Thank you! And thanks for your comment. I’m definitely a speedster. I come from a track background and benefit from a lot of mileage much more than speed work. My one “regret” in this build is that I wasn’t able to hit the key mileage weeks due to that toe injury. But then who gets the perfect build ever?! :)

  • @timtrenholm3698
    @timtrenholm3698 2 дні тому

    I can confirm that crushed gravel will cost you seconds per KM in carbon fiber shoes. My home course marathon is part pavement part crushed gravel trail and in the last 10k, I spent 4km on crushed gravel at 333W at 4:33/km and the last 6km on pavement was also 333W but 4:27/km. Same overall effort HUGE difference in speed. I can't wait to run Chicago in a few weeks on all pavement and flat surfaces. Last October I ran Valley Harvest in Wolfville N.S. where there was 5k, 10k, half, full and 50k Ultra...and the trail sections there were CRAZY with the congestion. I will never run another marathon on narrow trails again, and I will never RACE another marathon on partial trail surfaces again. For fun or as a pacer, sure...but now that I have the data why give away all that time for nothing, unless it's some crazy net downhill like Marathon P’tit Train du Nord. Go execute at Montreal, be in the moment, and let the results be what they will be.

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 2 дні тому

      This is great data! I did think the gravel cost me about 30 seconds and this seems to confirm that! You’re right though. Just gotta relax, stay calm and let the race come to me. :)

      I really like them. The ride underfoot is one of the best in any shoe I have including road shoes. The issue some people might have is the floppy heel collar. I’ve never had any issues with it but I could see how some people might not like it. Overall I really like mine.

One of the things I really appreciate is your ability to both be super focused while also not being self-centered as you run in these events, giving everyone their appreciation for being out there and giving no vent to any feeling of frustration of people getting in the way of your high goal for the day, etc. You take it in stride and give props to the running community for being out there.

    I love this channel. I am a runner and I think reasonable for 63 (37 km trail race, 25 min 5km and can run hills, at altitude I live at 1300m, with a pretty low heart rate) but I am not in Global Runner's league but I still find these videos incredibly inspirational. I cannot wait to hear how the Montreal Marathon goes. I very much hope that you achieve it. What I find odd is that you don't have more (many more) followers and more views. @@global-runnerDo not want to be pessimistic, but your recent race results don't look way encouraging. Probably this is because of your recent injury, or you simply did not race at full strength. But IMO your fitness was better 2-3 months ago than now. • @global-runner
      @global-runner 3 дні тому

      That’s interesting and no problem being realistic! That’s not pessimistic. I do think I was faster 2-3 months ago (you’re referencing the 16:22 5k, right?) so would probably have run a faster 10k or half back then but I definitely didn’t have the long runs and the marathon paced runs that I have now. You’re right that the injury impacted the amount of miles I could do but that’s part of it I guess - limited by an ageing body! :) Interestingly I have often had a feeling that I peak too early in my build. Maybe I need less time to build? Either way, nothing to do but taper now and give it everything on the day!

    Way to go Duncan, coming down from altitude will really help in Montreal lets hope its not too humid, other wise you are going to have a great marathon

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 3 дні тому

      Yes humidity will be a factor for sure. It’s super dry in calgary so I’m hoping for perfect weather - surely that’s not too much to ask for? :)

    I am turning 50 in November. I will be running the Montreal Marathon as well. This is my first Marathon and hopefully not my last. Your journey gives me hope to run a sub 3 hour in the future. Will you be meeting any UA-cam subscribers to your channel while in Montreal?

    Surely the 5000feet elevation is also a big factor. I am not sure by how much though.

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 3 дні тому

      It definitely would be. Less of a factor than in longer events I think but it is definitely slower up here (which of course is a positive for Montreal)

    • @robidoo99
      @robidoo99 День тому

      @@global-runner I googled "training at altitude 5000 feet" and top hit (based on Jack Daniels findings) suggests about 8-10secs/mile slower at 5000 feet. With gravel ~30 secs overall it makes your time more like 33min flat. Which I think puts you right in the slot for breaking 2:30, I think it will be quite close but definitely within your grasp. Something I did differently in my last marathon which I felt helped me to control my pace (windy course in places) was keeping current and last mile pace showing on my watch. Depends if the GPS signal is accurate though, there's parts of Chicago and London courses where that would be worse than useless! Look forward to seeing your result

    • @robidoo99
      @robidoo99 День тому

      Leading out from gun to tape also makes quite a bit of difference, it was really a solo time trial that. But checking recent results for Montreal, it looks like you should be ready to do the work on your own there too, any company is a bonus.

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner День тому

      That’s true! Although I did have lots of people to chase! Montreal has a half so I’ll be running with people until 14k at least (I hope!). :)

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner День тому

      These are great comments! Thank you. I like to keep overall average pace on my watch. Then I don’t freak out if im 3 seconds slow on a particular mile! :). But I do have it so I can change it to one mile at a time. Sometimes I do that later in the race.

    I was in Canmore in Sept 2022 preparing to go on an 8-day trek with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures. It was a great trek over to Mt Assiniboine wrapping up at Mt Shark Trailhead. I had a chance to run a few KMs down the Bow Valley highway from my Air BnB before we headed out. Canmore is an awesome place to run and of course train. It has been fun watching your training. As a running coach, I have taken many notes from these vids. My client runs Sydney next week and Chicago in October where we're aiming for a 2:45. (Sydney will be more of a checkpoint run) Well done in this race!

    Answering your question. No. But clearly the gravel, crowds and sharp turns slowed you down. Are you capable of a sub 2.30 at 50 (or 51)? I believe so and hope so. Good luck.

    • @global-runner
      @global-runner 3 дні тому

      I agree. Objectively it’s not fast enough. But if you factor in the elevation and the gravel and the windy course, it starts to approach a time that might be…
