So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. Today’s song is a heart-wrenching hit that makes those who hear it take some stock in their lives created by a singer-songwriter who left us far too soon.
At approximately 4am on, September 21st, 1973, Ingrid Croce was awakened by a phone call from her mother-in-law. The call interrupted a portentous, fitful dream where Ingrid was having trouble making contact with her husband who was away from home on a long road tour. Ingrid’s mother-in-law began the conversation with a question….Are you awake? To which Ingrid replied, "Yes, I was just having a disturbing dream about not being able to reach Jim."
Incredibly, the dream proved to be a premonition for what Ingrid’s mother-in-law was about to tell her….. There was a plane crash… and Jim, along with 5 other passengers on board….did not survive. The bulletin about the crash was devastating to Ingrid, her mother-in-law, Flora, and the rest of the Croce family. It was also a heartbreaking tragedy for Croce’s multitude of fans that he had captivated around the world.
A few months before his untimely death, Jim Croce sent a letter to Ingrid that he had made a liberating decision….Once the Life & Times Tour ended, he was going to get off the road for good, quit the music business, and find a way to earn a living that would not take him away from his wife, and Adrian James, his infant son. For his next chapter, Jim wanted to write short stories and movie scripts and step away from the public spotlight.
The thought of missing out on those precious moments of life with his family had been festering in Jim’s heart & soul ever since Ingrid gave him the exciting news in early 1971, that after 5 years of trying, she was pregnant with their first child Ingrid recalled that when she told Jim that she was pregnant after a visit with the fertility specialist, Jim was both overjoyed & terrified…. When I was a very small girl, we had a guest in our music class who was good friends with our teacher. That guest was Jim Croce. He was the kindest, nicest, most patient and sweetest man. He had brought his guitar with him and played for us kids and talked about music. It was amazing. The school I was attending was Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School in Philadelphia, PA. Jim had zero airs about him. He was just as warm and homey as his music. Oh! He was funny too!

I've been fortunate enough to have seen Gordon Lightfoot twice, and John Prine just before Covid19 hit.
I'm 52 and my wife's 45. And I have a vastly wider knowledge of music.
I told her I wanted to play a song for her. We danced in the kitchen as it played. She cried when I sang this song to her. She still does.
This song is eternal.
Jim Croce is one of the people that should've lived a long life and died an old man.
Live your life the best you can. Love people the best you can. Try and leave good memories for when you're gone.

Time in a Bottle was “Our song” between my first wife and I; her first gift to me was a 45 single of this song. Unfortunately, after almost 8 years of marriage, cancer took her into eternity, in 1995. When I hear it, even after all these years, I still think of her, knowing that we did not waste a moment of the time we had together. It was bittersweet going through this episode today, but it was good. Thank you!

I was a young girl in junior high school and a fan of Jim Croce .. I heard on the radio of his plane crash and death . It was a very sad day for this 14 yr old girl .., i cried and mourned his passing .. RIP Jim Croce .. I'm 64 now and Time in a Bottle still moves me to this day ...
I was fourteen as well, and a sophomore in high school. I was devastated by his death.
I'm 58 so I was a bit younger, but still remember that day. At night I would listen to a hidden cheap radio in my room , and the news came to me thru it later that day. I was a stunned little boy. My first real glimpse into mortality.
I was at work that played radio and the news came over the radio immediately there were a lot of tears.
I was 7 at the time and still remember being devastated. And yes, his music still brings me tears and joy.
My fiancé and I chose the song, Time In A Bottle, as “our” song in 1973 when it was released. Just a few months later in 1974 I sang that song to my young bride as we stood before our family and friends in our home church and exchanged wedding vows. Now, almost 49 years later that song is still “our” song and even more bittersweet as the days before is are much less than those behind us.

AJ ends his concert with Time in a bottle, when I saw him perform it live it hit hard. Now I’m a guy who isn’t known for crying, and my 19 year old daughter couldn’t understand why THIS song got me. This is a very pleasant surprise. I believe this is the first time you've devoted an episode to Jim Croce's music. Growing up in the 1970's, Jim Croce's was one of my many, many, favorite music artists. I've always felt that Jim Croce was to the 1970's what Buddy Holly was to the 1950's. Both had very similar parallels of triumph and tragedy. They both recorded catalogs of great music in such a short period of time and then were killed in a plane crash. I have Jim Croce's greatest hit album. I have so many favorites including "Time In A Bottle (today's featured song)", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown, "Operator", "I Got A Name", "I'll Have To say I Love You In A Song", "Working At The Car Wash Blues", and "Don't Mess Around With Jim.". While Jim was taken from us way too soon, he left a legacy of great songs. I consider him one of the greatest singer-songwriter storytellers of the rock era. Hope you cover more of his music in the future.

We played this album constantly. When we married in 1975 I walked down the aisle to Time In A Bottle. A friend sang and played it on acoustic guitar. We still play it today.
I was 7 years old when I heard the news of Jim's death announced on the radio. I knew who he was, because I loved 'Time In A Bottle'. To this day, hearing this song brings a feeling of sweet melancholy to my heart -- I have this song, along with 'I've Got A Name', and many others, on many playlists. When I hear 'Time In A Bottle' I feel like Jim is still with us -- the song is truly timeless ❤
One of the most talented singer songwriters ever. I remember buying his Photographs & Memories record when I was a teenager, a decade after his death. I played that album over and over until I'm sure the grooves were all worn out. Not sure why, but his music really clicked with me.

Jim Croce is kind of like a modern day Vincent van Gogh in that his immense talent wasn't really appreciated until after he was taken from us all too soon. To listen to his music, how he paints each picture with his timeless lyrics is a lot like staring at a van Gogh painting where you can see each individual brush stroke. You can feel that each word was written from his heart and all of his songs, but especially Time In A Bottle stir up emotions within me that perhaps no other artist has been able to do. Thanks for another great episode today, Professor.
He WAS the musical Van Gogh. Similar to his career being cut short by a plane crash, Van Gogh was only ever able to sell a single painting during his lifetime. ONE.
Are you kidding? His fame was skyrocketing when he died. His schedule must've been crazy at the time. The record company kept releasing his music afterwards which confused people. It was eventually pushed off the air waves by disco.

The year was 1984 when I found a tape in the budget bin in my local Waxie Maxie’s. I recognized the name and the full album on tape was $2.99 so I took the chance and bought it. It was Jim Croce’s greatest hits and when I got home and put it on…. His songs, his SOUND! I fell in love with the music and listened to it for a solid month! Then I went hunting for all his albums on VINYL (God, I miss vinyl)! His deep track were phenomenal and I would play my GH tape in my car (later in life when I got my license) to try and turn all my friends onto this guy’s voice! All my friends would call me a pseudo Hippy and ignore my music tastes… typical. Nine of my friends have ever understood my musical tastes. That’s fine, I’m cool with that. They’re MY choices. When I found out that Jim Croce passed away when I was a LITTLE little kid, I had a brief cry cuz that was ALL the music he made? There was nothing else to feen my addiction for his songs?! But I did find other voices to try and fill the gap. Jackson Browne, CSN (never liked Neil Young’s voice). I’ve always had a thing for a voice and just a guitar…

The 70's are such a fantastic era of music, the height of the singer/songwriter era..... Croce is a wonderful representation of this time, along with TomT. Hall, Billy Joe Shaver, John Denver and many others..... I had no idea that was written for the new blessing to his family. Croce songs are always full of emotions, whether the joy and laughter of his story songs or the tenderness and warmth of his heartfelt love songs. Truly a creative genius taken way too soon. Oh, I just found out we are welcoming a new addition to my family! (Sorry, just can't hold it in, first time grandpa!)

I was 13 in 1970. What an amazing time to be growing up. Jim's music was right there, front and center. So sad he died at such a young age.
I remember finding his greatest hits on vinyl in a milk crate among other records in the mid '80's when I was about 10 at a neighborhood yard sale. I knew 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown' so it came home with me with a few others for a buck or 2. I still spin it from time to time and it's better every time

I was a teenager when this song came out. The father of a dear friend of mine had passed away suddenly and she was struggling with the loss. After his funeral, my friend told me she had to leave the gathering - she had to get away. So we sat in her dad’s car and and listened to the radio. When Time in a Bottle started playing she started crying so hard and we just hugged each other. She had tried to be strong for her mother and listening to that song gave her the release she needed. It was a poignant memory that I always think of when I hear this song.

I always liked this song (despite being into hard and metal) while growing. I have had a hard time listening to it since my health took a crap not to mention seeing people dying of something similar. The lyrics really hit home, as my disease has made me look at life differently.

When I took up playing guitar I was attracted to acts like Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Croce. There's something special between that partnership with lead and rhythm acoustic guitar playing. The sweetness of the finger picking and the melodic lead fills are aesthetically pleasing. Love Jim Croce and his music.
I have good memories singing "Bad Leroy Brown " in grade school music class. "Badder than an old King Kong and meaner than a junkyard dog.
Time In A Bottle, I Have To Say I Love You, and Operater are my favorites by Jim Croce. Sadly, so many great musicians have tragically lost their lives in plane crashes. R.I.P. 🙏 .
As I get older, I begin to see how problematic the first song can be for some, but it’s still fun to sing nonetheless.

Jim lived near me for a while. I think till he passed. There live material from him around and his banter between songs mentions places I've visited many a time. There's a stretch of I-95 near Chester, PA that he told a story about when he was a truck driver. Always reminds me of him.

The song that always gets me is "I Can't Make You Love Me." I can relate exactly to this and I can't even sing it without choking up. But Croce's songs were so beautiful. I love "Operator." So sad. And these days, a singer-songwriter like this could NEVER get a record contract. We never would have heard his music.
Funny, my son was so excited when he “discovered” Jim’s music. He was 10 and he was mesmerized by Jim’s songs, and when he came to tell me of this wonderful new singer, he was crushed when I told him I was already a big fan.

Croce one of my favorites of all time. Time isn’t just a song, it’s wisdom it’s a warning. It’s about all encompassing love for another human being. Maybe it was a portend of what was coming.
Born in 1970, Croce, the Moody Blues, Dobie Gray, Jackson Browne, & 70s Elton were always my dad's go to music. It took me a while to really get in to the others but I always loved Jim Croce. Lost my dad 10 years ago and I always think of him when I hear any of these artists. Thanks, Professor.
I graduated H.S. in 73 and I think this was the first 8 track I bought. I finally wore it out over time. It made me think about my first love and loss. Then my first child. This song will be played at my funeral.

I loved this song the first time I heard it in the 70s and it still gives me goosebumps to this day. One of the most heartfelt songs ever written.
I was not a crazy fan of Mr. Croce, but I was a fan. Loved every single that was put out. I was and still sad about his passing. Now that I have learned he was ready to give up his singing career for his family, my respect for him has to. He knew what was important.
I was 16 years old and remember that fateful day well, driving home from the orthodontist when I heard the news on the radio that Jim Croce had died in a plane crash. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it. Has stuck with me all these years. What a sad day and what a huge loss. RIP Jim!

I remember that September day in 1973 , I was 13 waiting on my friends porch in Massapequa NewYork for his mom to drive use to school when she told us about the plane crash.
As devasting as it was to the Croce's, it was also devastating to Maury Muehleisen's family, Jim's longtime musical partner.
So sad to see him gone so soon. Managed to do a lot in his legacy in such a short amount of time, of course. When music is put into media and entertainment, it really is just able to resonate with so many. Cheers for this one as always.

Another enormous tragedy occurred in a Beechcraft. This time it was a Be. V35 Bonanza that took Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valence. That was 3 Feb 1959. One of the blackest days in rock n' roll.
I wanna thank you Adam. For many years I've only heard the music I wanted to, mainly hard rock and metal. A few years ago a very precious friend Randi started to drift from that genre on her reaction channel, and begun to open up new horizons of sound and taste for me. Now you have taken this much deeper with your channel. Boy was I put in my place today! I must say, I’ve never listened to this entire song. My mind never took the lyrics any further than just some amazing poetry one would start a summer fling with L O L! Never occurred to me that this guy was expressing an aching desire to hang more with his family, especially because as POR points out, the sky was the limit when we lost him. His fulfillment would’ve been just around the corner for god sake!
We all wish we could have done more with our lives in passing time.

Jim Croce’s music is truly timeless. I remember his music from early childhood. All his songs are amazing. When I first traveled to San Diego, I made sure to stop at Croce’s Restaurant in Gaslight Quarter. (It’s gone now as well.) It felt like a pilgrimage to connect w Jim Croce. As long as his songs are played, he will be missed.

My mum introduced me to this legend in the 70s. I have remained a big fan. I thank my mum for introducing me to some of the most influential and important artists of the 60s and 70s.
I was lucky, though. Both mum and my aunty owned record shops.
The one Jim Croce fact I know is that after performing in a lot of dive bars, he stopped using a guitar strap because it would slow him down if he had to suddenly boogie. Thanks for the beautiful sounds, Jim. And thank you, Professor.
I’ve been a huge fan of Jim & Maury’s since I was 8 years old. (I’m 58 now) I don’t think I ever got over the fact that their lives were cut so short when they still had so much talent left to share!!! 💔 But, I’m still so happy that they still managed to leave behind such incredible music that to me, is timeless. ❤️
Jim Croce was a brilliant song craftsman. He sung out stories and experiences that were really relatable, captured the mood and tone, and had fine melodies.
I just followed AJ Croce on Spotify. The fact he exists, and is.a singer who sounds so much like his Dad, is a gift to us all, and is just wonderful. I love what I've heard so far. I have always loved Jim Croce's music, every song is so good because of the texture of his voice. Time in a Bottle is so beautiful. Sometimes it's just so emotionally overwhelming, I can't listen to it until another time when I can truly reflect and appreciate the message it conveys.
There is never a wrong time to listen to a Jim Croce record. One of the great American storytellers and one of my all time personal favorites. RIP
Jim's 50 Anniversary collection is a pure masterpiece. I love the raw songs that he did with his wife. Lots of the songs you rarely can hear anywhere else.
This song still brings tears to my eyes. My music teacher was soo cool, He gave us music from Jim Croche and John Denver. They both hold a warm spot in my heart.
It was sad enough that we lost Jim, but what makes this tragedy even worse is how we lost Maury too---he was easily one of the best acoustic guitarists of all time........................and he and Jim were a match made in heaven! Although I was only 3 years old when the crash happened, damn, I still miss both those guys!
I was 4 years old when Jim Croce died and I still remember finding my mom in the kitchen that day, crying. I grew up listening to Jim - mom had his greatest hits tape in the car for years and we played it endlessly. Time in a Bottle always takes me back to that moment seeing my mom in the kitchen and I can barely listen to the song without tears myself. I lost her 3 years ago 3 days before the birth of my second daughter. I'm wiping my eyes now just typing this and thinking about her, and this song, and all the things it means. Thanks for this reminder of what of the greatest emotional moments in music.
I’ve loved this song since I first heard it at seven or eight years old. It always touches my heart.
Well, you mentioned Maury only in the death list of the crash. Maury's lead guitar (and harmony vocal) were so instrumental in Jim's sound, it's hard to imagine his music without them. Even a short, cursory discussion of Jim should require mention of Maury's important part in Jim's music.
I'm glad that you mentioned Jim's producers, Terry and Tommy, as they were also very important. Tommy played piano on "I Got a Name," as well as other instruments on other Jim recordings. There's at least one video on youtube of him playing piano on one of Jim & Maury's live performances of "I Got a Name." It sounds just like the recording. If I hadn't discovered otherwise, I would have assumed that Fox & Gimbel produced their own instrumental track and just had Jim sing on it. Maybe they just copied a demo recording, but I bet that Jim, Maury, and Tommy really made that song their own with their arrangement, and it is evidence of Tommy's contribution to Jim's sound.
I think that I saw "She Lives" when it first aired on TV, but I don't really remember it, and I was too young to notice music much. Til I saw this video, I didn't know that "Time in a Bottle" was meant only as an album track until the popular response from its part in this movie. Thanks again, Adam.
Oh man, I loved Jim Croces music, it started with my neighbor buying the 45 Don’t mess around with Jim, that we wore out and then he died and everything was just so much more meaningful. Operator still brings tears to my eyes!
Since I was born in 1970, I grew up on Jim Croce music. This was always my favorite after it hit the airwaves. Treasuring each moment is something that we tend to forget to do, instead looking ahead to "big events" and not realizing that every single day IS a big event.
Great to see you finally shine a spotlight on Jim Croce. As famous as he was/is I still think he's one of the most underrated artists. His writing was razor sharp and both his and Maury's musicianship was outstanding.
His music always puts me in a good mood. Gets me thinking about life,and what should I do with it.

Time in the bottle was played at my wedding. It was my choice of a song. My wife picked a John Denver song. I wanted to spend time with my then new wife forever. That was 44 years ago. Every time this song comes on the radio, I look at my wife with greater love for her than I had 44 years ago. Two years ago I went through cancer treatments. This song helped me during my treatments. I wanted more time with my wife. Thank you for bringing it back.
He was pumping out so many tunes at once that I took him for granted. When he died, I was so sad, and I felt so much guilt because I didn't give him as much attention as he deserved. I thought he would be around forever.
Along with John Denver country roads and eagles take it easy and this are my first songs I remember hearing. Two thumbs up 👍👍

I’ve always liked Jim Croce‘s music. My favorite song of his I got a name, but Time in a bottle is hauntingly beautiful with lyrics, worthy of pondering. As sad and unfortunate as his young death was, it makes it even more tragic to hear that he wanted to get off the road, and how I wish he would’ve had that chance.
"Time In A Bottle" shows a maturity far greater than most of us would expect from someone who was in his 20's at the time he wrote it.
Me and my wife walked down the isle to the preacher singing Time In a Bottle...Such a wonderful memory! Me and my wife divorced years later, but I will NEVER forget that moment! One of my favorite songs ever!
I've always loved this song, but as my daughter is about to graduate high school and go to college, it hits especially hard. Where have 18 years gone? Everything about this song is perfect: the instrumentation, the lyrics, everything. And that final chord... probably my favorite chord I've ever heard. I can't think of any other song to have used it. Such a haunting way to end a great song.

My late husband and I were engaged and married during this time and we were always happy when Jim's songs were played on the radio.
Like you and others, I've wondered what Jim's future would have brought to the world. What could have been remains a mystery.
On a side note, I always group 'Time In A Bottle' with Harry Chapin's 'Cat's In The Cradle' as they deal with how fleeting time is and what is important in life. And I did not know that Jim decided to spend more time with his young son and wife. Which makes it more sad that it wasn't to be.
Jim was phenomenal. In such a short amount of time he left us with so many great songs and memories.
I was born in 75, and grew up listening to his greatest hits album on 8 track. I had no idea he died at all, let alone how he died, until I was an adult. His music is timeless as far as I'm concerned, such a great song.

When I hear Jim Croce songs, I think of the 70s, 8-Tracks, and a blue 75 Ford Econoline we used to drive to drum corps (DCA) shows. My friend, who owned the van, played Jim Croce all the time, along with Godspell mostly, for sometimes hundreds of miles.
I REMEMBER THAT TV MOVIE! I was watching it, and sure enough, "Time in a Bottle" completely enthralled me! I was in high school, and beginning to learn guitar. "Time in a Bottle" was part of my motivation to adopt fingerpicking as my guitar style. I'm still fingerpicking to this very day, and doing my own rendition of "Time in a Bottle".
One of the first songs I learned to play, and still one that hits hard today. It's beautiful, but simultaneously poignant and almost heart-wrenching. Such a loss that we lost him so soon. And on a personal note, I know how hard on a person and a marriage it is to experience miscarriages. I'm glad that you guys were lucky enough to have that baby you wanted, and keep your marriage.

I had a much older sister growing up and she adored Jim Croce. I listened to Croce when my sister played her vinyl records and liked the music. It wasn’t until I was older that I understood the lyrics and I was really blown away.

Flora was also my mother’s name. I’ve never been a father or husband. I thought your feature was excellent, except for the errors. Your video and description said Jim Croce marched off five consecutive top 40 singles including “Time In a Bottle.” It was actually a total of six top 40 singles in a row. Although six includes five, people assume stating five in a case like that means only five. Those six were “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” (#8 peak), “Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)” (#17 peak), “One Less Set Of Footsteps” (which you never mentioned, but its #37 peak was within the Top 40), “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" (#1 peak, as you know), “I Got A Name” (#10 peak, as you know), and “Time In A Bottle” (#1 peak, as you know). You said the single “I Got a Name” was released the day before Jim’s death. No, it was released the day after his death, on September 21, 1973. You said, “Unlike every other Jim Croce single, ‘I Got a Name’ was not written by the singer…” You should have added something like “up to that point,” as Jim Croce ’s 1975 single “Chain Gang Medley” (#63 peak) was also not written by him, but written by Sam Cooke, Charles Cook, Jr., Jerry Butler, Curtis Mayfield, Calvin Carter, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. My little sister was lost at 17 YO, in 1975. All her friends picked the music for her service and Time In A Bottle was one and we were all crying all over again. I listen to the song on special days and it actually helps me feel better. It was a fabulous song that made us all stop and think and reflect. He was such a great artist lost way too soon. D I miss you Cindy Jo.
I was five years old in 1972 when I begged for my mother to buy "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" for me. It was my first album and I still have it to this day. I have now purchased CD copies of all my Jim Croce vinyl albums. A year and a half after getting my first album I was saddened to hear of the plane crash that took him from us way too soon. His music made me feel something at that young age and still does.
