- VIDEO DESCRIPTION This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint this powerful and majestic image of “ELEPHANT GIVING AN IRIS”. You'll learn basic painting tips and techniques that will have you painting a realistic wildlife animal portrait of an African Elephant holding a beautiful Iris flower in his trunk as he is offering it as a gift. The Iris flower and elephant symbolize intelligence and wisdom making this a perfect match in a composition. The intense stare of the wise animal and the delicate petals of the vibrant flower will capture the viewer’s attention. With the large three-dimensional tusk appearing realistic and the wrinkles adding texture to the painting, this impressive beast will not only bring you joy to look at, but you will also learn some valuable painting techniques. This painting lesson will teach you how to create realistic looking dimension with properly placed highlights and shadows, and it will provide you with a solid learning experience and maybe your internal pride will emerge along the way. You’ll learn how to draw a simple outline of the animal face and body that will provide a solid guide to start from with structure and form. You’ll also learn to paint dimension in the flower by utilizing the dark background as a base and blending colors in a layered way to enhance the intensity. You’ll learn to use a dry brush technique to build contour shadows and highlights adding volume to the form of the head, face, trunk and skin providing a realistic visual effect. This captivating creation may have you wanting to paint an entire family of large game animals with their powerful presence, but I suggest you start with just one…lol! Using only 3 brushes and 6 colors we'll create this compelling and stunning piece of art that will bring joy to any décor. So, let’s get painting and let's get sipping!

Oh that is a riot. We know that Michelle really enjoys her painting tutorials, but this is so much fun! Thank you for showing how much fun she really does have doing this for us!
Thank you so much!
Blacks, whites, grays , textures, dark-reds, bright-reds, greens, talent ....and voilá an Elephant given flowers to everybody!Thankyou very much.♥️
Hi Michelle. You are by far the best teacher online. You explain everything so well and detailed. I want to paint a Tiger head and a Lion head so much, but NO ONE explains what they are doing. Please would you do these and many more. I love all of your work. Thank you for taking the time to show us your talents.
I surely will! Thank you!
A young man at our church loves elephants and he loves Alabama football. So, instead of the iris, I am placing an Alabama football pennant in the trunk!! Thank you for sharing your gift.
Intelligent bearded iris with the beautiful intelligent elephant! ❤😊 painted by an intelligent lovely painter ❤😊you make my day!!
Thank you so much 😀
I have serious heart disease and cancer. These tend to come with a good share of constant pain. You and your most wonderful and very beautiful paintings are a tonic that heals…At almost 73 years old I need a lot of that, lol. Your extremely helpful amazingly detailed instructive manner make me think 🤔 I could possibly follow in your fabulous footsteps. A lofty goal I am aware. Your paint and sip method is genius! It is productive and healing as. well as relaxing at the same time. I also love ❤️ the truly innovative fantasy. You are my favourite pass time. I also write inspirational poetry so you give me inspiration, with lots of food for thought. Thank you 🙏 from the bottom of my heart 💜…with love and hugs, Terry xoxo
Hello Terry,
Well you sound like a woman with a lot of tenacity, motivation and strong spirit that lives life to it's fullest! I'm so sorry that you are dealing with such a difficult health journey. As a cancer survivor myself, I can't dealing with cancer AND heart disease at the same time... you must be a warrior of some kind! It makes my heart happy that you're able to find moment of peace while watching my videos. I do wish and hope that you pick up the brush and paint along with me someday... the act of painting is more powerful than the act of watching (in my professional opinion...lol!). Thank you so much for sharing your story and wish you much strength and healing as you walk down this windy road of yours!
Hugs from my easel to yours, Michelle
This reminds me of my Mom. She collected elephants but didn't treat them as more valuable than us, we were allowed to play with most of them. Thanks, Michelle, for the trip down memory lane 💕
Thank you so much 🌹❤️
Michelle, I was so excited when I saw that you chose to paint this elephant. They are so majestic and my favorite of all animals. Did you know that all those wrinkles have a purpose? Their skin is about an inch thick and those folds and wrinkles can retain 10x the amount of water that flat skin can and thereby helps to cool them down.
I did not know that! So sometimes having wrinkles is a good thing! I'm going to keep telling myself that! Thank you!
Eeeeeeeeekkkkkkk I'm so excited 😆😆😆😆😆
Hi Michelle! Thank you for your tutorials. I painted this elephant for my Mom for Mother’s Day and I’m so proud of how it came out and she loved it. This is my 3rd painting from your videos and I’m excited to do more. Cheers to you, and your dogs!!
I'm sure she loved it! Thanks!
I wass ready to put the hobby away, I was so discouraged with my paintings. You've given me new hope and brought back the excitement. Thank you!
Don't get discouraged because you can do it!
I am so happy to have found you! I started painting when I retired. To much time on my hands. Who knew I had a little talent. There is so much to learn and little tricks. I could not fine a local teacher and I was getting discouraged, until I found you. The way you explain and I love your humor. I’ve done seven of your painting so far. And I not done. Thank you stay well and happy. And you know I’m painting right along with you. Thank you my friend.
Omgosh I have to totally agree with you, I have been collecting paint items for a few years and tried to paint but, nothing much became of it and so now she has sparked a new burst in me to try painting again!!!! Well I'm learning and she is down to earth and very talented!!! Love you Michelle!!
thank you for sharing I love ❤️🙏 your painting they are so beautiful God Bless you ❤️❤️🙏
Elephants are such a majestic, really beautiful animal. This will be a challenge but i would like to try anyway. Thank you for this and the wonderful entertaining way you have of teaching.🌹
You’re welcome 😊 And have fun painting!
I really appreciate your tutorials! Since November they have allowed me to paint a few of your paintings as gifts; homemade is always better. Today's elephant was a birthday gift. Thank you for all you do!
Wonderful! Tell them I said "Happy Birthday!"
Love the way you teach! By using connect the dot method. You make a painting look easy to do. Especially, for people who have physical limitations or can't draw.
Gotta love the dots! Thank you!
I absolutely love your work. Can I request a whale fluke coming out of the ocean? Maybe during the day, maybe at sunset. Just the water dripping off the fluke would be amazing!!
Great suggestion!
i did this elefant with you and it came out wonderful , beautiful i really wanted to put the rose that you have on the rosy cheeks but roses give me a bit of trouble i need more practice on that rose ,but this flower came up excelent , thank you very much i didn,t knew that i could do this beautiful paints, God bless for your gifts and your time ,excelent teacher
Well, just to give you a head's up, I'm actually posting another video today that has a rose in it. Perhaps it could help. Thanks for watching!
OMG! I LOVE elephants! I can not wait to paint this one. Thank you!!
Have fun!
I love elephants and this painting. I also, appreciate the way you give the detailed explanations to break down the process. Thumbs up for your ' wiggle it just a little bit dance ' too !
Thanks so much 😊 Gotta wiggle!
I absolutely love elephants! I also absolutely love how you teach. You make it so easy for us beginners. I was feeling doubtful that I could paint an elephant, but thanks to you I'm feeling much more hopeful. Thank you, Michelle.
Thanks so much 😊
@@michellethepainter. I am following along with you, but I'm actually using a different reference photo. But so far so good! 😁
She is a wonderful artist.
Wow beautiful. Love your tutorial. Thanks for sharing nice tutorial.
Thanks so much 😊
I love how you explain what you are doing and why. Your step by step instructions helps me to feel confident that I can attempt what you are doing. This painting is my project for this weekend. I have watched this video at least 4 times and I feel I am ready to re-create this masterpiece. As a beginner painter, I know my work won't look the same as yours, and I'm ok with that. I am just thankful that your videos offer such simple guidance to beginners. Enough talking, now it's time to just dive right in.
Nice! Good luck and have fun! Let me know how the painting comes out!
She can drawing so real . It's looked like a real life pictures. I wanted to painting like this. She next to Bob Ross to me . I liked her painted. she deserved 100 millions follower on her UA-cam channel. Real life pictures. I like that 💯💯💯💯💯💖😍
Wow! Thanks Joy! I think Bob Ross had better hair though!
I'm glad I gave this a go, I seemed to be the only person in the FB group who hasn't done it. It was so cool to see it emerge with all the highlights and contrast. In answer to your question what is the largest mammal, the Blue Whale, but the African Bush elephant is the largest land mammal.
Good Morning, Yes, a ton of people have painted this image. I think a lot of us have a "thing" with elephants, me included! Thanks for the info on the largest mammal.
I'm sure yours came out great. See you soon, Michelle
Thank you Michelle... What a great way to get motivated.. I was about to give up on this elephant.. I couldn't get the eye right... And then I saw you wiggle clip and watched it over and over... I took control of my paint brush and completed the eye... The rest was a piece of cake.. I have 50/40 vision and some things are real challenging.. I just work at what is in front of me and in the end I am pleased with what I accomplished..... Thank you so much for the inspiration to go forward... You are a wonderful teacher... I've done 7 of your paintings so far and I won't go to other artist to learn how to paint... Your way is what all of us newbies are learning from... Thank you for sharing your talent with us....
Hi Ronseanna, Sometimes we all need to just wiggle it a little bit...lol!!! I'm so happy that you were able to work your way through it. They usually always come together at the end. I'm happy that you're enjoying my teaching style. Thanks for watching and have fun painting! ~Michelle
Michelle, wow wow wow! I’m new to your channel and have to say that I love how you explain everything in such detail and so easy to understand. I can't thank you enough for my wonderful email you sent me. I am picking up the brushes and using the acrylic boards I ordered and taking you up on your fabulous advice to join you at your easel; the elephants, the Tulip Mouse House and Winter Tiger to start. That should give the heart disease and the cancer a run for its money, lol. I just absolutely Love, Love, Love You Michelle. Thank You so much for the personal note...it truly helps. Hi Michelle,
Greetings from Ireland.
Just stumbled on your UA-cam channel and so glad I did.
We have been in a covid lockdown here since just after Christmas and will remain so until the end of April. Painting helps keep me sane so was looking for inspiration when I spotted you painting. Looking forward to trying out some of your ideas on canvas. Thanks 👍
Wonderful! Welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy the videos and I hope all is well in Ireland!
Thank you for this tutorial!! I live in Tuscaloosa Al and as you know the elephant is the mascot of our college football. My son is a huge fan and I did this for him and put a football instead of the flower and wrote Roll Tide beside it. He loved it

Nice! That's awesome!
Great Artiest
What an amazing painting! How do you get your paint to spread so much without reloading the brush often??
Hi Jon, I'm happy that you like the pairing of subjects for this painting. For these tutorials I'm using a thin bodied student grade paint from Blick Materials called Blickrylics. They don't have the best pigment, but I like the consistency for layering and blending affects. I sell small sample sizes on my website (link below) if you want to try them before you buy the larger bottles. Have fun painting ~Michelle berkshirepaintandsip.squarespace.com/paint-supplies
I love these ones of animals and cartoons more than the nature ones.
So good Michele. My neighbor here house is full of elefants. But this is very difficult 😁. Maybe I try it sometimes. Just doing other paintings of you. I like very much how you explain. Greatings from Janet in Holland
