  • In this video, I attempt to demystifying the process of painting 6mm figures with this regiment of French Cuirassiers.
If you are interested in see me tackle the same unit in a more civilised 28mm, you can find tutorials here:

I think 6mm is an unappreciated scale. They are cheap, paint quick and look great en mass. Thanks for the video.

Very well done. Having painted over a thousand (maybe several thousand now) 6mm myself (Napoleonic, ACW, ECW, WW2) I would say the two biggest things to take away from what Christie said are: 1. Brighter colors than you would think - or they will all look the same across even a small game table) and 2. don't try to over do the detail. Paint what is there... after all most players at your table will know what the uniform looks like. Painting miniatures is about 'tricking' the eye into seeing more detail than is really there - in 6mm more so than any other scale - so if you paint the right details (epaulettes, crossbelts, cuffs and collars, etc.) the rest of it will just fall into place for the observer.

Thanks for this. Was feeling really daunted painting 6mm Napoleonic and this has helped heaps. Outstanding work explaining the whys.

Great stuff! These were the highest quality 6mm I've seen. Makes me almost want to go back over the ~1000 baccus Romans sitting on my painting table....almost..

Thank you very much for doing this Christy. It's interesting to see how someone with Art School training approaches the subject. 6mm is a great scale to work with and lets you produce big armies that look nearer to what many wargamers are aiming to represent. All that and the 1812 Overture as background music!

Excellent job. Despite the artistry, what I cannot shake from my head when watching this is that the trumpeter is not only standing out because he is the only white-horsed rider but he has no armour either. Easy to pick out and easy to kill. There goes the command and control ...

This was a great video! Please do more small scale miniatures in the future. I would love to see a variety of small miniatures from different manufacturers.

Also the layers advice for this scale is top notch advice. One of my mates directed me to this link and he obviously got the advice from your video.

This is great, I'm a huge fan of Baccus' figures. I like the amount of detail you put into this scale. My 6mm ACW project is starting to itch again, but you should see the height of Lead 'n Plastic Mountain...

I was drawn to 6mm by a German guy's Kickstarter for 3D printed infantry, cavalry, and artillery figures for Commands and Colors.
    Incredible work!

For 6mm that is incredible work. Id like to think my own army is to a good standard but what you have done there is amazing!! Well done you 😉

Loved watching this, but impossible scale to work with. Hey, Christine, could you try to tackle a Russian artillery crew with the cannon sometime? The green of the uniforms is a challenge, and you don't have any Napoleonic artillery videos that I have seen. Thanks again for a great video!

Excellent paint job Christie, perhaps a tad too detailed for the scale and using the dark undercoat base they tend to be much darker than they should appear. You have to remember, when these figures are on a wargames table they appear to look pretty much like tiny multi-coloured splotches, so the brighter the colours probably the easier to tell one unit from another. Also, shading horses at this scale is kind of ovekill. A white undercoat and brighter colours for contrast is they key here. Other than that an all around excellent job and I love your work in all your larger figure videos.

Not bad for a first attempt at 6mm !
Two main errors here (often made by painters used to larger scales) ; the colours aren't bright enough and the basing materials used are far too coarse for 6mm.

+Vidal Bairos Sorry! I should have mentioned that! I used a number 0 for most of this.

Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy sorry if this is a silly question as I’m waiting on my figures to arrive, with the 0 do you just apply a very minimal amount of paint on the edge of the brush to avoid it spreading everywhere. New to this whole field.

Probably better putting a layer of fine grit down then painting green at that scale for the base. Completely mad scale to paint, well done.

    Hello Christy,
Congrats for all your vids on painting figs etc. great work, indeed. Here, it's nice to see someone explaining how to paint 6mm figures. I wish I'd have found someone who could give some advices back in the day (long ago).
    Anyway see here for our stuff(mainly 6mm /Fantasy 10mm/25mm) : vendheaume.fighters.pagesperso-orange.fr/
One general comment on the vids, from time to time, I suppose beginners would like to see what really is the consistency of your paint.
