On the southern outskirts of Brooklyn, just down the boardwalk from Coney Island, the peaceful ocean waves once drew waves of immigrants from a tumultuous past. Refugees from the former Soviet Union. After the Cold War ended in the '90s, an influx of Russians settled on the shores of the city.
Brighton Beach, nicknamed Little Odessa after the Ukrainian city on the Black Sea, boasts the largest Russian-speaking population in the United States. Here, you may feel you need a translator, or a tour guide, like Dave Garbarskiy.
Onward down Brighton Beach Avenue, at M & I International Food, locals stock up on fresh-made breads and other provisions. While there, also sample Russian-style eats like cured cold cuts, variations of pickled fish, and Pir-oj-ki: fried pastries with either a savory or a sweet-filled center.
Fresh apricot or mango juices often accompany meals at cafes, and you can sample a variety of dishes for under ten dollars.
Of course everyone in Russia needs a fur coat, and maybe a fox fur hat, as warm as they are stylish. Luckily, David's uncle owns a store down the street!
When you commit to long train rides to the outskirts of New York City, you'll be amazed by the things you discover. It's not necessarily that Brighton Beach looks like Russia - it looks like any other neighborhood in Brooklyn. What makes it Russian is the people you meet, the sound of the language and the music in the streets, the foods you get to sample - that's what gives it the vibe that you're somewhere else outside of the United States.

Just like GTA IV Liberty City's Hove Beach. Home of Roman Bellic. LOL
Nicko elic
Nikola "Niko" Belić is a Serb
He’s Serbian you idiot
@@lemonfridge5119 He's talking about the neighborhood itself. Which it literally is, Brighton Beach - Hove beach. In the UK, in the name of the place it's named after the full city name is Brighton and Hove.
Lemonfridge well Brighton Beach is an Eastern European neighborhood
Majority of those people are Russian speaking, but not actually from Russia. A lot from pre and post soviet countries. Majority are from Ukraine. They even used to call it little Odessa because it's near the Ocean and full of Ukrainians. Also majority are Jews. Almost all ethnic Russians are orthodox christians, and they're very rare in Brighton.
Admiral Ackbar Yeah, Odessa mainly speaks Russian (78%) despite the fact that majority of Odessa are Ukrainians (62%). A sort of cultural paradox. But im curious what is actual percentage of Russian born people in Brighton beach
yes.
Yes, of course, in 0:19 on the left there is a Kazahk man probably.
That's right. I used to live in the area. Many of them are from, as you stated, former-USSR. Jews are majority and I have noticed many Kazakhs as well. I like the area especially Sheepheads Bay area. Like most immigrants, they keep it to themselves and pretty nice people. I tried to flirt with some girls and had a little hard time since they don't speak English very well, but they were never rude. I wonder where are those actual Russians Orthodox Christians live in NYC? I am just curious. I miss that area. For some reason, I have a huge interest in Slavs and Balkans history. Russia and her people had a long history and contributed art, literature, science and many others. I think Russiya is coming back.
@@hansibryan Some of the young ones I know usually move out of New York and become "Americanized" or sometimes the opposite they would move back to Russia because they couldn't adapt to the American culture.
This is hove beach GTA IV real life
birghton beach is called little oddesa, becasue of its large amount of jews from ukriane, russian jews, they just speak russian, but in brigthon beach there is not many ethnic russians, mostly ukrainian jews
No, the russian jews came in, in the 80s, but they are old now, and ethnic Russians have since migrated there and are now the majority the last 15 years
no actually it was renamed to "little russia" since around 2012
I am a Serb from NY born and raised, and I know many Russians from Brighton, but i'd say 85% of the Russians that I know are Jewish.
Mostly jew not ethnic Russian
Every comment In here is incorrect 🤦 it was named little Odessa way before 2012.
Niko Bellic
Hey Niko!..
+Ya Boi Washington Dimitri is hiding somewhere 😊
+Kuririn Fan I know, but since the game starts here it's just what a lot of fans associate him with

Still my favorite part of liberty city ❤❤.
I live in Brighton beach and my commute is about no more then an hour to midtown in the morning. On a bike its about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Its very livable and fruits and veggies are cheaper. Russian food is also healthier then the supermarket groceries.
is there many kazakhs there because i went to bright beach the only central asians i saw were uzbeks
3:50 lol it’s the Russian Shop from GTA IV
i wanted to see that Russian store in GTA IV and see how it looks similar to the real thing.
Hello. This seems like a great place to stroll around. Like it is a small village in the middle of a big city. Looks so cozy, people seem so relaxed and simple. As if time stood still and you are back in the days when everybody got along and there was no drug abuse or violence or any other obscenities. Just a clean environment, good people and then of course , right next to the beach. If I could , I'd be there right now! Would have a good time just overhearing people speak Russian, glimpsing into those fur- stores whilst hearing that beautiful music and eating typical dishes. Thanks so much for sharing such a nice video. Spasiba ! 😄👍🍀❤️🌷 Congratulations from Belgium 🇧🇪
Thank you Very Much this is nice video
Cousin! Let's go bowling!
Parece um lugar legal pra se visitar! Quem sabe um dia eu o faça!
Excellent video clip !
What a charming image. Hove Beach, next to the docks. Immigrants here do not make it very far from the boats they come in on.
The Russian part of my Family came here around 1917 'till we left Coney Is. in the early 1970's , Thanks for the memories !
do you speak russian
Iryush not really Only a few words & I don’t spell anything in Russian
brbnews hahaha
I lived in Brighton Beach and loved it. I miss the food, the peopke, the culture, and that beach.
rivka coverdale I'm curious to know, is Yiddish spoken at all in Brighton Beach?
Yiddish a little. Mainly Russian. :)))
rivka coverdale Interesting. My grandfather still speaks the language, as he was raised with it. He has various books and things from his childhood, all in Yiddish. I feel bad because he has no one to speak it with.
***** Keep telling yourself that, tough guy.
these "russian in brghton beach are jewish by blood, fuck these wannabe russians
I have been to New York City four times in the last nine years and really want to check out this locale.
They are not russians. They are Jewish from USSR.
This is a beautiful Russian community within New York. America is a multicultural treasure because of its diversity. This is a great video.
You know you're in Brighton Beach when you have to pause mid conversation cause of the trains rattling on the tracks.
Thanks for this video - I want to go here . The food looks delicious , nice people !
Patricia Rosen Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
Я с Брайтон Бич,I live little Odessa
Кирилл Орлов я тоже ну я казах
Hove Beach!
Makes no sense playing Balkan Gypsy music when u talk about russians
true
Did?.. did they really put gypsy music?
Hey, you're exactly right!
I went there last year and it was cool. Tried Russian food for the first time.
As someone who is 30% Russian I love going to Brighton beach from where I live on the jersey shore I enjoy it I have been to Russia tons of times and it reminds me of being over there
Interesting place to visit once in a blue moon. My observations: an appreciable portion of people who live in Brighton Beach are retirees living in subsidized housing; very difficult to own a car there due to parking limitations - not uncommon to park blocks and blocks away; extremely cold during winter months due to the winds blowing off the ocean; everyone there is dressed to the nines all the time so they won't be gossiped on; densely populated area offers no privacy; many shady people there
Да..., люди там реально зависли в 85 году...
Yes, russian dude seeing the opportunity to speak in his native language meanwhile the video is in english and all the other people in the comments are speaking english....
I like to spend the day at Brighton Beach when I visit New York. The markets have interesting foods and other items like clothing and other goods. I enjoy ethnic markets and seek them out whenever I travel. You can get good, inexpensive dairy products lke tvorog, smetana, and kefir in these markets. I don't know if I could live in Brighton Beach, but I still enjoy the place.
I miss NY especially Brooklyn..
фильм снять в стандарте FULL HD (1920x1080pix), такие камеры в мире появились относительно недавно .... , те о которых Вы говорите были стандарта SD (PAL/SECAM или NTSC) и продавались в конце 70-х .
Why author of this video used such transylvanian soundtrack? It sounds little a bit offensive to me. I'm Russian, but Dracula isn't my ancestor.
Very interesting

During Summer I go to Brighton Beach just to relax I know ppl looked shocked when I said thank you and good bye in Russian
This is epic! I will take a trip there to practice my Russian when I (finally) get to the East side!
why are you learning eussian
@@mahmoudq4286 because its the best language
You don't have to there's a lot of Russian-speaking people that also live on the West Coast like California.
To those of you who actually live in or know the Brighton Beach area, I grew up and lived in nearby Coney Island (Luna Park Housing), before and during the great Russian immigration migration of the 80's. Fond memories...
i’m a kazakh living in brighton
WOULD LIKE TO MEET THAT PLACE
I love this, I spent a week here with my Russian /German/USA love.. I miss him dearly.. he's one in a million.. he's tall sexy wonderful not unlike the man in the vid.. so thumbs up.. Brooklyn is a winner..
he’s russian or german?
I worked there ten years ago. It was a great experience.
I could live there its look cool place
Omg hove beach next im gonna check out the Jamaican district
Beautiful
When I visited Brighton Beach last December, my mom said she was glad we didn't live there when we immigrated to the US in 1999.
It's mainly because of the Q train running above ground in the middle of the neighborhood, which ruins everything and makes it appear ghetto.
Amateur Professional it is ghetto that’s why i moved oit
@@mahmoudq4286 I know but I mean if it wasn't for the trains being literally right above the shopping center than it wouldn't feel as ghetto as it is. And I don't blame you for moving out. I'm glad I never had to live there but I did visit the neighborhood many times with my mom as a child.
DIRECT FROM HOVE BEACH XD
Hove Beach... next to the docks *gasp*
pretty cool. I can visit every country in America in a way . lol .
Interesting. I've only nown BK for Italians and PR.
Best pelmeni and borscht i've tasted was from a deli here.
This background music is not russian
I have walked in all of the places they recorded
I love ❤️ Brighton Beach my Russian is very limited but I know how to say thank you and goodbye
I wonder if they went bowling with Roman🤔
Brighton Beach today looks like some Sransk in 90s. Russia is more advanced today than this part of the US
Очень хороший видео! Я хочу отдыхать там.
не иди там грязно
The inspiration of "Hove Beach" in GTA IV
That's right that's what it's based on in the game
Says: "we are trying... meat pastries". Takes a bite... and it's cabbage?
Yulia :-)
❤
sad but true...
poor american russian = real slavic russian
rich american russian = jewish
We love Russians.
Lord Farquaad the difference?
It is more like ussr in New York. They stuck in time.
Jews not Russians.
First Russians can be Jews, and secondly is being Jewish supposed to be a bad thing?
BluescreenBandit Oh, so you're one of those. Figures.
orthdox christians not JEWS
we have saying in russia "speaking russian and orthodox - then it is russian".
Jews are a minority there now
Mother Brooklyn... that's a great neiborhood ... but even people that have lived there for 20 years can't give directions...lol
Сразу воспоминания об Америке из компьютерных игр ,таких как GTA , Мафия и т.д ,и конечно же из фильма БРАТ 2
I always wanted to live in Brighton Beach. I'm sure it is expensive.
You really don't want to. Unless you have really good connections with the people, you will either be an outcast or treated like trash. Hell even most Russian-speaking people who live in that neighborhood are treated horribly. Visiting Brighton Beach is fine. Living there is another story.
I've been here
20 лет назад не было таких камер
بالتوفيق
Correction: it's no russian place, it's a russian speaking jewish place. There are no orthodoxe churches there, but lots of synagogues
It’s no russia, it’s a mix of Soviet israel and Caucasus
'Soviet' would be more appropriate term here, doesn't look like there's many ethnic Russians there, so it's about mentality first of all. Who are they ethnically? Just listen to the music used in the video...
jews
Love the shirtless Russian grandpas smoking cigarettes and fishing in the early morning off the Kony island pier, nicest dudes in the city
as I said, "little Odescow"...
Походу многие здесь даже из своего воображаемого мира (гипермаркеты, хорошие дороги) никогда не выбирались, не говоря уже о Кызыле или там Брайтоне
" Little Odessa " it was many many years ago now it should be called "Little Soviet Union " a more suitable name.
it's Brighton Beach but that's OK for your pronunciation I mean no offence if you are offended
When I came to NYC in 1991
I visited Russian Orthodox church
on Pennsylvania ave..
That people were or White Imperial officers or real Russians

it looks a bit dated and run-down. I'm sure it's a nice town, though. I'd love to go sample some Russian cuisine.
it’s mediocre
it's OK don't worry.
What Azerbaijanian guy has to do with Russia. please tell me!

San Francisco has Chinatown... Did the Russian Jews build the railways anywhere? Would they have or perhaps they would hire Chinese to so it?

i like how the guy was like "don't try to learn russian":)
because this stupid broad isn’t going to learn
Вот именно, что даже в шахтерских городках Кузбасса, уже давно нет такого колхоза, как у вас на Брайтоне. Чувак, вы там плотно в 80-х 20 века, засели, выбирайтесь давайте.)
