What a fantastic job of engineering your camper. So many details with a bit of genius mixed in making it stand out from the crowd. The fact that you did this yourself makes it 10x cooler than anything commercially produced. The well-thought-out storage is next level and the matching pelican cases look awesome! I'm inspired to do my own and sell my rooftop tent. Thank you for sharing this with us!
This is one of the best solutions I have found for tacoma camping. The combination of spaciousness, weight and overall size and form factor is not an easy balance to get right. I think this camper has found a wonderful combination of all three. I currently have a Four Wheel Camper (finch) on my long bed tacoma and it has served me well. But I often wish I had the flatbed openness that allows for entry on the sides as opposed to the back. It changes the space dramatically from feeling like a tunnel to more of an actual room. I may consider looking into the technicalities behind doing something similar to this build in the future. Awesome work and thanks for the inspiration!
I have a 1986 Jeep Comanche. I’m starting a process similar to this and let me say I couldn’t thank you more. I’m not trying to copy you exactly because I have different needs. But thank you for inspiring me not to settle for something that can be bought but rather something I built for me.
Thrilled to see another Overland Under Budget video in my feed! Keep ‘em coming! The fact that this is all built for and by you makes this my favorite camper build. I’d love to see how you connected the shell to the fabric, particularly how you accounted for water intrusion. Also curious about any electrical work you did for interior lighting.
Thanks Daniel! I really appreciate that. So the top of the camper has 2x2 angle aluminum all the way around the lip. So water would have to come in at the lid of the camper and then travel up 2inchs to come in. But the on top of that, the fabric is attached to the outside of the lip so when water is on the fabric it runs down and off the outside of the camper as well. Make sense?
Well done. Love your approach by keeping it simple practical and under a limited budget. After retirement I swear never to tow anything ever. For me freedom is to experience much with as little as possible. It is surprising how far one can go if we become more in harmony with nature. From Africa.
Simply fantastic. I have been in a quandry for several months about my overland direction. I have a 2002 double cab Tcoma just like yours, but also have a 1993 wrangler. Seeing your video has inspired me to sell the jeep and build a very similar rig on the TComa. So thanks for that. Been following you for a couple of years and love your direction and insight. If you are ever up in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area, drop me a line. Cheers, Chris.
This is the best camper I have ever seen. DIY or commercial built. Great efficency and creativity. I am going to copy your idea as best I can. Hope you don't mind because I am doing it.
That truck camper is awesome. Reminds me of a teardrop trailer except its on the back of your truck and that makes it so much more versatile. Great Build.
You could sell plans for this. I own a '98 Tacoma and a '97 2-Runner and have had many Toyotas. They rock in general, but you, my friend have taken this to another level!
I love your ideas, but I'm very big on safety and Visiblity to other drivers. So I would definitely take advantage of the top edge on the back of your creation. I would attach a Third Brake Light set up so you don't get rear ended. Side marker lights too. put them on a separate switch if stealth is needed at times. I think a rear bumper of solid steal would be in order so you can bouce off and drive away. You probably don't drive to much in urban areas for long to have to be around unsafe drivers.
Randomly found this video watching a bunch of truck bed camper vids, and I was blown away at the opening shot. I'm 99% sure you filmed this a couple miles from where I live. Great build! 👏
Your channel and builds hit so closely yo home for me and probably for many of us bc I love building things and working on my truck myself. Im also a new welder and in the spring ill purchase your awning template and give that a shot. Thanks for documenting your ideas and builds and helping out the community bc I know I definitely cant walk into these off road shops and afford what I want. So DIY it is to save on cost!
Dude! This is soooo slick. I’ve been dreaming and planning a similar build for my 2010 Ford Ranger 4x4; little truck but tons of potential like these older Tacoma’s. I love that you’ve built on the chassis versus the traditional truck bed inlay. The quality and utility of the build is top notch. Kudos to you! 🤘🏻 I’m really looking forward to your next video on construction materials, insulation, build weight and methods used for framing the upper and lower assembly. Once again, superb build!
I’ve had two ‘08 3l v6 rangers, and I now have an 02 first gen Tacoma a buddy was going to scrap he abandoned at my place that had no clutch and a bad frame. A friend and I fixed it up better than new and it is a way better truck than a ranger. If you haven’t already started building on yours I recommend not investing in a ranger. Find a junky 1st gen to bring back. They’re way more fun to drive and are better constructed over all.
@@omaralam18 I’ve slept countless nights under the stars with and without a camper. Because, building a camper is a technical challenge that I’d like to experience. It would be a fun project to say I built this. And yes, without a camper is far too cheap and reasonable. Ha!!
Now thats a perfect well thought out DIY build. At first I thought the back end was sticking out too far but after seeing how much room you have, its not a concern. Perfect for Overlanding. Whats the canopy frame material? Square aluminum tube with aluminum outer sheets? Love it.
Why didn't you have the pop up open towards the front of the truck? If it opened from the front there would be plenty of foot room with whoever is sleeping with up top with their head towards the front. Just curious. I do like the slide out and the swinging storage. The driver side one would be a cool spot for an outdoor kitchen stove later on
Your becoming famous !...Have you given any thought to doing overland builds for living...Nothing better than doing something you are passionate about, and being able to support your family....doing it....there are some very talented people with same interests, and it wouldn't be hard to assemble a great team.

This build is so cool, I love the flatbed and how your camper can come on and off with ease. I've been tossing around ideas of how to do something like this to my truck and you perfected it. Where did you source your acp sheets from?? I can't seem to find anywhere that sells that big of sheets. Awesome build man!
Love this build something like this is what I want I currently have a huge caravan and want something smaller but still able to sleep 2 adults and three kids which this could definitely sleep. liked the video and subscribed.

Love the build and innovation, but I just can't fathom how that sunroof slide can be waterproof. If there's room to slide, there's room to leak in the rain.
Just came across your video. Pretty cool set up! I love it! The only thing I would do is make windows with screens to keep mosquitoes away because I would feel claustrophobic with the windows closed even tho you have that awesome skylight. Other than that I think you’ve done an incredible awesome job with it! 🙌😊
You showed how you keep it from popping open, but what prevents it from slamming shut? Just wondering cuz when you said your kids sleep in that space, I wouldn’t sleep a wink worrying if it was windy outside
Do you have any photos/videos of the entry door/window? Looking to see how you prevent rain from leaking in along those lines since it’s a door not sealed/welded corners?
Planning to build mine. I've sourced the panels, but I REALLY would appreciate if you could share a few things. First, the door and window details. Did you just build a box from the metal square tubing? I tried pausing your videos to see that detail of where the gasket seats, but couldn't see it exactly. Second, how does your skylight stay watertight when closed? Awesome build!! Hope you see this comment and shed some light on my questions.
