  • In this short video I talk about mental health, photography, creativity and whether we’re comfortable with accessing the deeper places inside. I believe it’s really important to learn to use the happy and sad areas of our lives to help us to create great art. Photography is essentially art, and to be creative we have to find a way to express ourselves. #mentalhealth #photography #creativity

Not sure what UA-cam has done to the colours on this one - used the iPhone so maybe the codec went weird…anyway - hopefully the message is still there. Thank guys 😊

Thank you for sharing. When my 42 year old wife died in 2016 the best therapy I went through was talking to a group of strangers who went through a similar event, not my best friends. At that time I turned my camera on myself for some “basic” self portraits. In those photos you can see the pain I was in at that time. I could not re-create those photos if I wanted to. They are just so raw.

One of the reasons behind the mental health crisis is that it was kept inside for too long. Of course, it is uncomfortable, but that is a key part of the process of growth. Good on you, Chris, for talking about it.

Mental health needs to be in the public forum. Your discussion was personal, vulnerable and important. Don’t let them rent space in your brain. They merely showed their lack of awareness and understanding another human may experience. Regards…..Wayne

I lost my wife a few years ago, and for a long time I found myself in a kind of desperation mode, nothing made sense to me.
Grieving for someone can last a lifetime, but I learnt how to manage it, it's still there but through my photography, bringing back happy memories with my wife I have somehow managed to cope, and to me that's what it us all about, doing something finding something that allows me to get through those times one goes through. Some people understand, some don't, but it's not about them, it's about ourselves. I for one take heart regarding your videos and wherever I take my photography I take my late wife with me, she gives me the inspiration to carry on because she used to enjoy it as much as I did.
Cary on Chris, loving what you post, thanks

I appreciate the photographers who I follow who share their depths like this, I feel they have the strongest photo channels out of the ones I watch. It feels better to connect with someone who is sharing their lives, rather than just watching the people who are basically being a salesperson for the newest product. It is too bad some people have to be nasty with comments instead of just deciding it is not for them and "changing the channel."

The earlier video did NOT make me uncomfortable, in fact it made me appreciate you all the more. I have had similar mental health issues and have used photography in a similar way to center myself. It made me feel good to know that someone else had been through the same things and found healing in a similar way, Carry on, Chris. Keep doing just what you are doing. You have friends out here who look forward to hearing what you have to say.

UA-cam is full of trolls. They are losers in their own lives and will never master anything. So they find joy in attacking channels. What to me that is interesting is when they attack a video on mental health is the subject is probably too close to home. They need mental health help. Like any addiction they are spiraling further in life while attacking others but their mind thinks they are getting a high. We must pray that they get help before they hurt themselves more. Just my opinion. I always pity those in their addiction.

Well said Chris. Having suffered from acute depression myself, and subsequently turning that into becoming a therapist, I find your comments resonate and the trolls do not speak about you, but is a reflection of themselves. Thank you for taking the time to create your videos and content yourself with the overwhelming support you have from your followers.

Very honest Chris. As a former mental health professional and someone who’s experienced my own issues, I think it’s up to you if you wish to disclose your experiences. I think it’s healthier to explain what drives your creative choices. It can be uncomfortable for some but that’s for them and how they cope with expressions of emotions/thought processes.

I love the way you share life, and this is one of the most attractive things about your channel for me. Again, for me, people feeling uncomfortable or complaining about a mention of mental health issues are only revealing their own insecurities - which is itself a mental health issue. Too ironic... But keep open, Chris. People, and especially men, have suffered too much through sweeping things under the carpet because, for some twisted and sick reason, some people think it is "manly" to be a rock, without your own life or emotions. We only need to be a "rock" in that our loved ones know they can trust us and depend on us - and those things brings emotions like it or not.

Chris, as you probably know, there are many other creative people who have personal struggles, and some of them are photographers on UA-cam. We all struggle at times. We all have needs, wants and boundaries, etc.; but it would, in my opinion, be a terribly dull world if we were all the same. We do share many things as humans, but our differences are normal too, but, can lead to a level of discomfort for some people. This, I think, is also quite normal. I often have to remind myself to: beware of those who speak ill of others. To keep this brief, I'll be me and you be you, and, sometimes we'll share and sometimes we won't. It's normal. Cheers to you Chris. I enjoy your channel. Sometimes I'm comfortable and sometimes I'm not. It's all normal.

Hi Chris, as @randombitsofreality said it's your channel and your community and you have always done what you think best for your channel, I have a very small walking and photography channel and already feel like sometimes you get more or less shoe-horned into a particular subject matter, and dare you do something outside of that it either leads to a massive drop in views or negative comments, I mean just look at the time when you sold your Fuji gear for example. Sharing your own personal thoughts / issues on mental health, is that not a good thing, you probably feel a release from talking about it plus at the same time your raising awareness and helping others who maybe have kept stuff bottled up and seeing your video gives them the confidence to talk to someone about it. I think photography is a great help, even myself personally at the moment am going through an illness in my immediate family, and just being out on a walk with or without the camera is a great release for me, I might not class myself as having a mental health issue, but what I get out of it is the same, I can be alone with my thoughts, or I can choose to escape those thoughts for a while, whilst still having a loved one at home to talk to if needed. Reading the comments on this video you have plenty of support from your community, which you have built through your hard work, keep doing what you do best (sorry for the long comment!!)

Two thoughts from my own experience: firstly, early on in my profession when I was facing the equivalent of trolls, somebody told me that sometimes there are 'blessèd subtractions'. If these people don't like what you do and then leave, have a sense of relief, not a sense of failure. Secondly, it's by no means necessarily vitriolic or unforgiving to block them: Someone once said something about not casting our pearls before swine.

I'm a bit stunned tbh that anyone feels it's their right to tell you what you should and shouldn't talk about on your channel!

I think if we're creative we already have accessed something deep inside of us. Many times people have stopped to ask themselves why? It's a fascinating question and a fascinating process to go through. To the person who thinks it's a useless pursuit because it doesn't make money that's fine. Money is their highest good. Money is ` a good' because we all need it, and I dutifully go to work everyday and put in my best effort to honour the `work.'
Wealth, power, pleasure and honor in life. Is there anything else? Well, maybe there is. And maybe it doesn't die with us when our flesh gives up.

Chris you are a great role model one of the problems in society is that men don’t feel comfortable discussing their feelings and this is one of the reasons male suicide rates are so high - don’t let the haters stop you 👍😊

Please don’t stop sharing your feelings and thoughts. We all need to do this more for our wellbeing. I, personally, have not only had professional photography as a job when the stress of my expected career path was too much and I quit it, but also how the art supports me through my whole life, personally too. Maybe instead of being hostile, rude, negative or unsupportive, those people who said otherwise need to take a step back, stop and take a good look at themselves.

Pay no attention to the folks who were/are critical of you sharing your feelings and problems. For the most part they are revealing their own issues which they are probably not comfortable with. Keep on doing what you're doing.

I don't have a channel, and I don't do much to share or exhibit my photos. I'm also not a professional. My photography is mostly just for the sake of trying to improve skills, and to give myself motivation to get outside or go to cool places. Despite all this, however, I still definitely sometimes feel that if I were a "real" photographer, I'd be swimming in external validation. Not sure I have a point - just venting, I guess.

Maybe our mental health would be better if we paid less attention to what other people think and say. You don't need to explain yourself. Keep up the great work. Those who appreciate what you do will keep watching.

I think it’s also about role modelling for people too , therefore people don’t feel isolated or alone in the world people connect through different media and things that bring enjoyment and fulfilment so thank you for expressing . People will also find vulnerability difficult weather in a creative or personal way and harnessing it for the greater good ? Xxx

You’re not their friend, no, but it is your channel and you can post what you like. If they don’t like it then don’t watch, easy.
What gives them the right to speak to you like that, they came to Your Channel, yet think they can tell You what you can and can’t post, simple small minded idiots that you don’t need and would do better without them.
Personally, having multiple health issues myself I think it’s very brave of you putting it all out there, good for you Chris

Chris, the world is full of arseholes who take pleasure in finding the negative in any situation. They are like emotional vampires. I've noticed their numbers have grown since lockdown. Ignore them. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your channel, whatever the subject. 😊👍

I enjoy many of your videos. Unfortunately it’s the internet and you can’t control who watches, what they are seeking and if they are disappointed because what they watched didn’t meet their expectations. Then there are trolls who can’t help themselves. A wise commentator once said the comments people leave on videos are pretty much always about themselves, even if at first glance they look to be commenting about something else.

Say whatever you feel you need to, whenever you want. Don't listen to or acknowledge negative people. I'm a subscriber, if you are coming across with content about cameras or lenses I don't agree with, so be it, If I like the content, great. Keep them coming. Warts and all.

Chris. UA-cam is audience driven media. Fact is it's your channel, and the viewers are your audience. You develop the content that is meaningful to you. Your regular viewers are positive and watch your content. You don't need likes and so on for validation as an artist, or an individual. Do what you enjoy. If someone doesn't like it they can go watch "Kittens playing piano" videos. Haters gonna hate when they can't be you, or they can't have you. Keep up the good work mate. Just remember, your haters make you famous!

I have no problem with you being open, and think you are brave and maybe even helpful to others, by talking about mental health issues! I don’t understand why some have problems with it. If they don’t like a particular video, just skip it.

Your channel, your rules. Thing is, someone somewhere will watch one of these videos, and maybe realise they need help. Your commentary and openness made them realise they perhaps need to address certain issues in their life and they decide to act upon it through your words. What’s that saying? Somebody somewhere remembers you for your act of kindness.

Unfortunately, mental health along with some disabi!ities are still a taboo subject and those who suffer from them ate frowned upon and not taken seriously. I work in manufacturing, and I see with my own eyes how work colleagues make unkind comments and gestures towards those who do suffer from these unfortunate deseases. This is feep rooted in our people, because they associate an illness with weakness. Very sad, very primitive.
