Just a regular guy who is a big fan of urs and a guitarist trying to be one of the best amongst others one day. Can't wait. Thank you for all the efforts and videos and lessons. 🖤
Thank you Jens. Your lessons are always such an inspiration! I'm so slow that I'm still digesting one from about two years ago, but that lesson alone has completely changed my playing and increased my enjoyment enormously. This lesson helps to give me a glimpse into the 'outside' sounds I hear in other's playing that has always been a mystery to me, but at my current rate, it may take another ten years just to comprehend the lesson. 😀
Great video as always. Your teaching in a short video like this is enough material to keep us busy for weeks….smile. I love the onscreen music/tab and your new blurred out darker background look.
You are a legend Jens. I wish you were my uncle so I could visit you frequently and talk about the stuff we like. Probably one of the weirdest comments 😂
Great stuff Jens! I like to use quite a lot of chromaticism when playing 'outside' and also repeating a phrase up a half step, but starting on off beats - seems to sound better and controled to my ear.
More kudos needed again… Your videos are excellent!! I appreciate your ability to explain succinctly and the time spent on the little production eye candy that is constantly happening. Bravo!!!
Thanks so much Jens for your stellar teaching and inspiration this year ! Am looking forward to revising this video. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year ! Cheers, Kevin 🤘🤠
Master Larsen, excuse me, would you mind making a video on altered scale over dominant chords please?, that would be a game changer in my playing... Excelent video Master.
Hi Jens, I always follow you and I took some cues from you to include some jazz language in my playing. But now I would like to devote myself completely to the study of jazz guitar and I would like to start from a basic level. I don't have much time to follow online, have you written a method that could help me develop my basic path? I don't read music so I would need tabs and audio examples in the method. Thanks regardless
@@JensLarsen Thank you very much, I will send you the invitation request, I hope to be able to evaluate if it is suitable for my level which is rather low…Ciao
@@JensLarsen Let me tell you Why I'm asking: I'm doing a doctorate in which I'm trying to defend jazz theory as an analytical tool for analyzing Western music of th 20th century. I came across this article by Tymoczko in which he relates jazz and Impressionism (Debussy, Ravel) by a set of 7 scales, in which the augmented scale is included. The thing is, you're the only person I've ever heard, besides him, that speaks of a usage of this scale in the context of jazz and I was wondering if there are more people who speak of it, and if it is recognized and applied in the chord-scale theory in general. Thanks for your response, your channel is one of the best on jazz I've seen on the Internet!
@@luizcadu Oliver Nelson uses it on Blues and The Abstract Truth, and James Spalding uses it on (I think) Wayne Shorters Soothsayer album. Really clear examples with 3 triads
Yeah, as I’ve mentioned on other “Jazz” channels, the problem I personally have with all the videos on this scale or mode working over that chord thing just doesn’t sound musical to me. I can listen to fusion guys for maybe a minute before I have to find something else 😂. It’s about phrases and melodies not scales, triads, etc IMHO. Give me Lester Young or Louie Armstrong anytime. Dexter Gordon is about as far “out” as I can stand it. Even though he did play out he always brought it back to the melody and kept you listening, a beautiful thing. Not too many players today that do that. Just sayin…Peace ✌️
Major 7th is almost impossible to make sound good on top of a dominant chord. (F# played on a G7) Resolving even to the root isnt going to help it, since of all the alterations possible on top, the root is a weak/uninteresting top line melody note. (My 2 cents)
Jens - I have a suggestion for another lesson on triads. It comes from a Podcast by Pablo Held where he is interviewing John Patitucci and they are talking about Wayne Short's "angular" playing. It would be great if you could analyse this for guitar. ua-cam.com/video/rqGFTzYv3Mc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PabloHeld. Patitucci demonstrates it on bass at about 45mins into the podcast.
I actually have a few lessons on that already, here's one on dim scale use as in the podcast, but some of the triad pair videos could be useful for developing that sort of melodies (which is also what I demonstrate in this video, both on triad pairs and with the augmented scale) ua-cam.com/video/49dhaWmBol8/v-deo.html Does that help?
@@JensLarsen Thanks Jens - I'll start working through your video lessons because I really like that angular sound. Oh and BTW, I just became a Patreon - basic level to begin with but we will see how I get on. Keep up the good work.👍

Do you have any of his books? I highly recommend them. Well written, easy to follow, no fluff and help you to learn efficiently.

Being able to make music, and interesting music at that, with restrictions and limitations is an awesome feeling!
Indeed 🙂
The best introduction to this topic that I've ever seen. It gives one lots of ideas of how to do this so that it sounds convincing. Many thanks!
Thank you, Mike 🙂

Great video Jens! Very understandable and useful.

I love the sound of these phrases . I would think Alan Holdsworth used these technics. Am I correct?
He certainly use some of them. There is a lot of augmented scale phrases in Devil Take The Hindmost

Hard to play outside over here. Lashing rain ☔
Here it's just crazy cold 😁
I find the ‘half step up’ stuff really hard to implement and make it sound good…… more practice required I think
Focus on hearing the melodies by moving up a motif, until you can do that it won't really work, and that does take some work 🙂
