It's interesting that if you actually look at the Ikko Ikki Ashigaru, you can tell that these are not the "professional" Ashigaru of other clans. They wear mismatched gear, mostly ragged looking, many don't have boots, some are dressed like monks. It's cool how much detail they put in these games.
Yes, Shogun 2 is beautiful and thought out. Unlike this other, newer total war game I know which takes place in the ancient world. Ugh. Cant play that game for more than a couple hours.
@@d2vid5 fuck you ancient world is awesome
It makes sense, they are an army at angry, disenchanted peasants and artisans.
@@d2vid5This aged well
ahh the days when videos were an hour long this series will last me all night.
MrSmartDonkey keeps you up all night ;)
I played the beginning of Ikko Ikki campaign legendary many times now. I think I've figured out a fast effective way to complete it. I had realm divide at turn 1556 with 3k eco, basically no trade after that. I was doing just fine with loads of sword ashigarus, a couple of yari ashigarus and ofc bow warrior monks. There is definately a randomness at play. For example there seems to be a 50-50 percent chance that either Asai gets destroyed early or that Asai gets allied with Hattori. It might be that Oda is OP or that Oda gets backstabbed by Imagawa. But Takeda seems to be going strong all the time.
You gotta play very similar like Mr Donkey ofc, main difference is that you should ally with takeda. Battling Takeda "early" on is very taxing on your economy since you need huge armies to compete with Takeda. Also, like i said, you can be sure they are among one of the strongest factions. Also, their cities are shitty economy-wise.
I think a key point in getting an alliance with them is to trade with them first, it definately helps if you have the trade node at the "center" of the map that gives you warhorses. They also have warhorses by default but yea, logarithms. In order to get this trade node you need to do harbour/bow kobaya asap and it is possible to get to it before Yamana does it. Having that trade node (you can also get the node far in the north), it allows you to sell trade agreements for ridiculous prices, like 12k to Hatekayama. It may also help getting their alliance by not expanding for a long time. Sakai and Jinbo declared war on me (I had barely any military), so i made Sakai Vassal and conquered Jinbo. After a few turns Takeda offered me trade, in return i had to break trade with Sakai and another clan. So having warhorses helps giving you alliance with Takeda, so you can expand to the north and don't worry about south, and it allows you to sell trade agreements for high prices, AND it allows you to trade in the first place, which is not self-evident with Ikko Ikki.
So you take Jinbo, ally with Takeda, then take Uesugi, then take Ashina/Mogami/Date/Hatekayama, then backstab Takeda and work your way towards the mid. Take Honma somewhere in between. Might be that they attack Mogami with their army. If you trade with them (they also buy warhorses for ridiculous prices), you can see if they leave their town. Might strike then.
1. @ round 1, build harbour at Echizen and farm at Kaga, disband ronin, trade with Jinbo and Sakai, tech to Todofuken. Move monk to either Jinbo or Sakai. Good for demoralising armies (experience). Gotta be careful about triggering war though. Might be that you are at war with Sakai and Jinbo simultaneously. Sakai will declare war on you anyways pretty soonish with that low military count so you might aswell lvl up your monk with them.
2. @ round 2, trade with Asai, sell 10 military access turns each to Asai, Hatekayama and Sakai. If Hattori declared war against Asai, you can also sell 20 turns to them since they will get destroyed soon anyways. Don't worry about Hatekayama, they won't backstab you from their position in the "north". Build farm, roads, armourer, fletcher. You can also start building archer range for ronin. Don't forget to assign your general to development before you start building. If you're not building, assign him to finance. It is likely that you need to build a couple of units before fletcher/armourer finishes, but i started with main military production AFTER these buildings finished and i was doing fine.
3. @ round 3, build bow kobaya and send it to warhorse trade node, if yamana reaches before you do, you done something wrong. Second bow kobaya goes to iron trade node in the north (you need it for master armourer). Build trading port.
4. It's getting more random now. If Sakai has their army close to your borders, get your army next to your harbour so they can't raid. Maybe also build 1-2 sword ashigarus. If Sakai attacks, i recommend making them vassal. If they as vassal get attacked (Hatano or Takaoka), break alliance. If Jinbo attacks, occupy their city. They might be occupied with Anegakoji, so having a monk there to scout when to strike is a good idea. I stayed at 3 cities for quite some time, don't worry about that. This was the time when i got to warhorses and could start trade with Takeda. I think i sold military access to Takeda to get an alliance with them without having to pay.
5. Your second trading ship should go to iron trade node. Might be that Uesugi is at war with you at that point since you prob have the starting city of Jinbo. But try it anyways. You should have bow kobaya sitting at iron trade node.
6. If Todofuken finishes, build roads. Then tech to Zen. When you do that, also start upgrading your fort at Echizen since you need a slot for the Ikko Ikki temple. The temple is OP. Not only it gives you happiness and converts this and nearby provinces to Ikko Ikki faith, it also gives you naginata warrior monk for defending. Gives 2 naginatas if you upgrade temple. Together with yari ashigaru garrison and samurai retainers you can defend against forces like triple the size on the power-barometer. After Zen i recommend teching to equal fields so you can upgrade farms and after that to essence of the spirit, so you can upgrade temple and get very, very early bow warrior monks. After that i recommed teching bushido (heaven and earth / way of the bow). Maybe tech Chonindo before teching all the way to way of the bow. Mainly depends on how many cities you already have.
7. With this playstyle you do need some sort of navy on the north side of the map vs Uesugi, Hatano, maybe Bessho later on. If you f***ed up conquering Honma so they are still alive when you take Sago (when you let them take city of Mogami), then you also have to contend with their navy.
Wow you wrote a whole story
@@nozy4457
yea a story about how to pwn with ikko
Your insight into this game is amazing. I have been failing with the Ikko Ikki on legendary but think I will now have a chance to win.
I know it's pretty anachronic to put a comment here now... Anyway I've started again playing this game, being quite fan of the Uesugi style I tried again and again following your videos with them. I learnt a lot but shit this is so tough to manage. Being interested in the monks kind of things I decided to start over again with ikko ikki and fuck you say it's one of the most difficult again... I'm gonna try anyway. Lot of bullshit in the comments just to tell that I appreciate these videos, I still learn something after 10years playing total war series. Thanks a lot
Tokugawa, the unifiers of Japan is the first clan to be destroyed. Can't be more ahistorical than that. This happens just too often. Anyway.. I like your videos and I have learned alot how to play the game better with your help. Especially the real time battles and what to build where. So thanks alot.
No problem, glad to hear my video's help you out :).
+André Font Really old post I know, but historically the first thing the Tokugawa did in the Sengoku Jidai was get roflstomped by the Oda, and only survived by immediately swearing loyalty to them. The Oda did the bulk of the work, the Tokugawa inherited their legacy and finished the job.
Every one of my play through s, they were amongst the first to get wiped out lol
B-but the one who unified Japan was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who just rode on the success of his boss, Oda Nobunaga...
Actually Tokugawa got subjugated by oda. However after the oda guy died, Tokugawa replace oda through court influences.
No matter how many LP's you make I keep on returning to your Shogun 2 ones ... One of the better TW's to date... And you still have Tokugawa and Uesugi to do you slacker. Get cracking :D
yeap, get on it dude pleaaaase
I'd say that vassalizing the Sakai in the early game may be a good move. Wakasa's one of the worst provinces in the game, but it's also a chokepoint to prevent people from the west from attacking you. Vassalizing them gives free honor, and if people from the west attack it you can always liberate Sakai again for more honor.
The Ikko Ikki got nerfed from what they were when they came out, mainly cause of change in Moral system. Before the numbers made the old moral system so they barely could be broken in spirit. With the one that is active now makes the larger numbers, makes them weaker, they have become a more of a tactical clan, than a cheer number clan, they are also the only ones which gets Loan Sword Ashigaru, which are a hell of a good defending force, and can rival that of Katana Samurai (of other clans) when given Master Weapon Smith and an Armoury (Encampment building), So they are weak in beginning but towards the end they are damn strong.
My favorite strat early game is to incite rebellions to take provinces
Thanks for this. I’ve always wondered about them.
I'm currently halfway through my Ikko legendary campaign. This will be interesting!
Keep uploading!!! I really love this video! MSD, can you use your monk to create rebellions? Or just make a mess? Maybe do it in the next vid or so :).
Same as with the other Shogun 2 Let's Play, I record a backlog, so I can't do things in the next video. Also, check the comment chain with mikenzb here in the comments, I go over my opinion on creating rebellions.
Nice! Hopefully I'll have time to watch this, it/ the holidays do I probably will :D
Also I think the 'triple speed' button is actually x4, I saw that somewhere, minor difference
And from watching these I REALLY want to start a new shogun 2 campaign... Or about 5 simultaneously AND finish my FotS one... Dick :D
50:20 Aggressor and Defender are Ikko Ikki (Insert same spiderman meme)
I am a bit late, but amazing video, mate. I still play Shogun 2 in 2023 and the same clan and find it pretty challenging at hard difficulty, and you play legendary! Every other clan declared war on me because of my religion, and it was though to survive the first years. Looking forward to learning a lot from you.
in my current ikko ikki campaign I'm allied with the uesugi..and that both our clans are the dominant force on the map
You should do an Ikko Ikki Challenge: Rebellions only
I miss this game so much they messed up multiplayer with the DLC but over all I love it
I love the ikko ikki but I have a hard time actually getting things to roll with them
If you could only recruit one but not the other, would you rather recruit Yari Ashigaru (not the Ikko Ikki or Oda variety, but vanilla) or Loan Sword Ashigaru?
Total War: Shogun 2 - Ikko Ikki (Challenge: No-Dachi Warrior Monks Only)
When you had 26 turns to wait before declaring war against Jinbo, couldn't you have used monks to incite revolts? Either you would decrease your relationship with Jinbo or capture the provinces once rebels take them
I knew this was the next one , It had to be ! :D
"Masters of Faith", um I think Clan Otomo might have something to say about that.
35:50 in the older tittles when men are physicaly incapable of runnig away they will fight to the death.
ikko ikki warrior monks have 5 or 6 more attack and 3 more defense
Why not an armour smith + melee bonus encampment? Or vice versa? they naginata warrior monks can be used for prolonged combat epecially with some armour (: it's an awesome main line i find
Here I am playing as the Ikko Kiki in normal mode and still struggle to survive. Everyone hate me, they declare war on me for no reason, they not going to become my ally. Geezzz. The last game I face like a giant full samurai Hatakeyama stack at the early game struggling to survive . Quit and start a new one, 4 turns in the Sakai declare war on me, win that, then the Jinbo, then Hattori, then Satomi who somehow manage to defeat the Uesugi and took over echigo declare war, then the Hatano. For god sake I haven’t even declare a single war and I am at a three front war a few turn into the game, my first army was barely finished, my second army is scrambled in a hurry. My economy is no where since I have to feed such large army. Try to find a solution to the problem of everyone hate me as the Ikko Ikko…
ok i have a question..if you got some ikko ikki ronin and put em up aginst a unit of katana samurai(1 unit vs1 unit)who woupd win
I think the katana samurai, simply because it's harder for them to rout and there's more of them, so they can surround the ronin, even though the ronin have slightly better stats.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
it finally happened
I'm guessing you're happy it did :P.
I might be :P
I tried doing it on my own youtube channel just a normal but I hate the mini realm divide the clan gets and it screws me over
Do you think its best to get armour twice with the encampment and amouror, or get a weapon bonus and armour. Or does it depend on the units?
To me it depends on the kind of army I'm going to be using. If I'm going for an offensive army (few to no ranged units, lots of melee infantry and some cav) then I'd go for the weapon bonus (keep in mind I'd still make the cav in a province which gives charge bonus, I'm just making clear the kind of army it'd be) but if I were to use a defensive army with lots of ranged units doing most of the work, I'd go for armour, so I can stand there taking the hit while my ranged units take out theirs.
twice armor would be good idea in fall of samurai, here most battles are melee
***** can i ask why you wouldnt want that one town the the west? wouldnt it provide more income
Because it would be a lot harder to defend.
Дешт-и-Кипчаг против Икко-Икки
I realize this video is pretty old at this point but it's driving me crazy that you didn't recruit your swordsmen in the town with the blacksmith!
Even before it's upgraded it only makes them stronger.
I'm aware, but I needed to pump out as many units as possible or I would get overwhelmed immediately.
*****
Fair enough, I forgot how ridiculous legendary difficulty can be in the early game.
also you have to upgrade he forge once to get better ashigaru
+Cody Archer Good point, I didn't even think about that. That's an even better reason.
Also if you get a armoror your monks have as much armor as samurai and with a armory more then samari
That's what you get for allying with too many of them hahaha
anyone 2018 :)
@stalker But not latest
more difficult to say the least
what do you press to see other unit positions
Spacebar.
thanks dude!
how do you make the map display the names of other provinces?
Pretty sure that's standard.
+MrSmartDonkeyLP really? hmm idk why but it doesn't do that for me its just all blue
No it does not
Is it better to make a clan a vassal or ally?
I prefer just conquering everything, can't trust allies and vassals.
True, if you need something doing, do it yourself haha.
One more question (Still getting used to the game)
I noticed some units like the hero units are rather small but they have really high stats, does their size make a massive difference? Heard people saying "Don't let them get swarmed"
Thanks!
Well, just like any unit you don't want them to get swarmed. Hero units are alright, but I don't think they're that amazing, I tend to use them as a secondary general unit because of their circle of influence giving units inside it extra morale. For that reason I tend to use mainly the cavalry ones because they can cross the battlefield quickly.
Good points, thanks for the help!
Wow how did u got so much commercial bonds?
Commercial bonds?
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP( *commercial agreements) with all the provinces around ? For me every one was unfriendly at the start
the ikko ikki ain't samurais
+August Grosbøl-Rais there were samurai among ikko ikki rebellions
How do you unlock this faction
You buy the DLC.
ty
Cavalry suck in this game.
Heresy, Yari Cav is one of the best units in this game.
How do you mean the direction? Can you give an example of when I do that in the video?
Ah, you just hold down the right mouse button.
To be honest, if it were historically accurate, cavalry wouldn't even exist in this game.
Aside from Takeda, and to some lesser extent, Uesugi, almost no one used cavalry in the way a total war game wants you to.
So the theory that Takeda have the best cavalry in Japan is somewhat valid... but only because they are basically the only ones.
ya but it's because they want you to build your clan to your play style really. My clans use a lot of spears, archers, and light cavalry. That has always been my play style though.
dutch?
Yup.
