I wanna point out that it’s a misconception even within the re:zero universe that Yin magic is ‘debuffs’, it’s simply such a rare element to have an affinity with that advanced users of it essentially don’t exist as no one lives long enough to learn lost forms and it’s so rare that yin users don’t meet often, let alone enough to pass knowledge of the magic down through generations. [SPOILERS FROM NOW ON FOR ANIME ONLYS] Beatrice is the ONE known exception to this, as she is a great spirit with a Yin affinity, and has spent 400 years learning about it and becoming likely the most advanced Yin user in history, she’s capable of utilising the element to its full capability, and through her we find out that Yin magic is actually at its core the manipulation of space and time, the most basic of spells like Shamac manipulate space slightly to cause visual and auditory illusions, but the highest form of the same spell, which has been lost to time except in betty’s case, is capable of sending its target to another dimension entirely. Additionally, Beatrice’s Minya spell appears to just be crystallised Yin mana, but the way they damage their target and the way Betty describes them tells us otherwise, the mana arrows created by the spell are actually made of mana that has been frozen in time, or ‘stagnant time’ as Betty says, this is why they can’t be deflected and are so deadly, if one pierces you it begins freezing you in time until your body crystallises into stagnation as well, at which point you fall apart. There’s so much more to it and the way that spell forms can be manipulated in the imagination of the magician before being released means that even Subaru can alter it to make the Minya arrows more deadly, explosive, serrated etc and advanced yin users like Betty can cause the shards of the arrows to stand perfectly still acting as immovable fields of razor blades or even create rifts in space time with a spell like Minya, which she does while fighting the great rabbit to annihilate some of them. Her door crossing is also a manipulation of space, as is her ability to nullify gravity, teleport herself and others both short and long distances, and more recently her ability to warp the space time around herself and Subaru to create an effect similar to regulus’ authority, preventing those inside the distortion from being touched by anything and everything from the outside, as it simply cannot pass through a barrier of warped space and frozen time, just with a mana limiter rather than the way regulus’ authority works.
Whenever I thought about magic systems I thought about deciding magic into categories like gravity magic being used to either control objects or control yourself (I. E. Flight and weight) or heat magic being used for cold and hot, so when I heard you mention that fire and ice where part of the same affinity I was like ey, somebody finally pushed that dynamic.

I'm making a power system in my shonen manga and its called Zen Two which is a martial arts technique that focuses on the manipulation of prana (life energy). I know that Re:Zero also calls magic prana but prana in my manga series is directly drawn from the original hinduistic version the word and concept of ki/chi/qi. Zen Tai is way too complex for me to explain in this comment but it basically centers on the idea that prana is basically everything as well as being the life blood of the universe. Prana is also treated as something very special and sacred since when someone unlocks their ability to use it they are usually considered to be awakened or enlightened and can never go back to how their lives were before. However if it is used incorrectly it has a variety of consequences such as accelerated aging or insanity. Prana also deals with opposing forces living together in harmony as well as self discovery and the idea that true strength comes from maturity and understanding rather than latent power and pure force of will. This system also demands that one must be strategic to win fights.
Thanks for this video, I'd recently decided to read the novels from the end of Arc 3 after rewatching the anime, and even though I understood the magic system in Re:Zero was more complex than those usually in anime, this video was really helpful in elaborating on that. I really appreciate how in-depth this system is, reminds me a lot of Fate/Stay Night's magic system (the novels for that series are also super detailed about how magic works), and the concept of mana and od is very similar between the 2 series as well.
This video is well made. Kudos to the creators. This is the only rezero vid that does not yield crappy videos just to gain viewers. The editing is spot on.

I'm reading trough the QnAs the author did, and more on the power scaling: I think the characters you mentioned are something along the lines of having the highest magic abilities, the list of the strongest battle strength ways, characters is: Reinhard>Ram with horn, Regulus, Sekhmet and Puck's true form(witho including the ones that have not appeared up to that point, which was about 3 years ago) ... Although Reinhard could take them on all at once... Also, Ekidna apparently has the highest IQ... I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna completely spoil myself, but whatever
A little adding. In terms of incantation difficulty (from easiest to hardest): divine blessings->magic->autorities. Don't ask why (cause some explanations might touch arc 6 spoilers).

How do spirits work in this world, like are they actual spirits or something more physical? I know that some can be artificially created so they seem kinda weird.
Question about Al Shamak. Would the spell teleport the target to a dimension of nothingness (the shadow realm, if you will) or to another world, like Earth or other fantasy worlds?
The Od Laguna concept reminds me to the Administrator concept in Tower of God For those who don't know (ToG Anime onlys), in ToG every floor is guarded by one big giant Administrator who rules all the Shinsu in the floor, as well as the most important tests of every floor. And if they percieve a disturbation of the Shinsu's flow or an overuse, they could came out to punish your or simply send you to another place
Witch Cultists are mysterious in a lot of ways, but I'm guessing they're either using a different form of magic, or they're experienced enough to not need an incantation
SPOILERS FOR ARC 6 After finding out that Satella's shadows are based on Yin Magic, I wonder if all the Authorities are extremely powerful, corrupt types of Yin Magic, or at least based on them. Gravity manipulation similar to what Hector does is possible with Yin Magic, for instance, as is manipulating the senses, which could explain Petelgeuse's Unseen Hands, and even Sirius' Authority. Hell, Subaru and Beako outright replicated Regulus' invincibility with Yin Magic. The only one I'm really stuck on is Lust's Variance and Change.
I do not think that authorities are an aplication of Yin Magic. Satella was mentioned to be the most powerful Yin magic user, but that could be even before she got the gene of envy, and even then we don´t know what her actual authority is. Echidna and Beako mention that uthorities are an extension of someone´s will, and an antithesis of Od Laguna. If anyhting, I´d describe them with our current knowledge as sort of divine protections you give to yourself. there are sure still a lot of mysteries to them, but I still believe they are not magic.
Interesting. Didn't know the magic system of Re:Zero was this deep. Never noticed Rem using those different Huma spells, kinda works like Final Fantasy in that its like Fire, Fira and Firaga. The whole using fire to make ice isn't new but it is rare. (Several fantasy novels and games do things like that but its absolutely more common to see ice as its own element or as part of water) I'd be interested to see all the spells once the series is over just to read thru them all. (don't want to ATM cause I'd like to avoid spoilers as much as possible)
So, can you use magic outside of your affinity? Cause Rem can use Huma (Presumably a fire spell), but also has healing powers, and I doubt she's a Spirit Arts user, so that means she must be able to use water magic. She could just have an affinity for both fire and water magic, or maybe spells cast with your Od rather than Mana aren't limited by affinity (The phrasing was a bit unclear on that), but whatever it is, it's been bugging me since I first watched this video. I've also seen a lot of fanfics use the idea of channeling mana in its raw form through your body to enhance your physical capabilities as an explanation for the likes of, say, Wilhelm's crazy acrobatics against the White Whale. Is that canon, or just a widespread headcanon?
So I'm thinking there's actually 4 types of magic in this universe! Where exactly do curses fit in those 3 types? It's not a spirit art or a Devine blessing, it's also not from a witch, so not an authority the most likely thing would be elemental magic, but curses reffed to separately from that, so it has to be a separate type of magic!
I want to hear the answer to this too. What I personally think is that curses are a secret amalgamation of elemental magic (like Roswaal's flight magic), and made in a way that sets a ticking bomb which can be easily removed (in low numbers) before its activation, but is designed to stick and runs its course after activation.
Curses are a non-elemental spellform that function differently to normal magic, as they’re often used to inflict damage by stealing mana from the target. They’re entirely separate from the elemental magic spells
It’s possible it counts as actively trying to use magic above skill level (and damaging the Gate), but can magic be faked? By which I mean, can a spell be bluffed? It was mentioned that not even Roswaal can use Al Shamak, but could someone fake attempting to cast a spell that they can’t, or would that instead overdraw from their Od to try and activate anyway? On that note, has anyone with no affinity for one element but an affinity for something else tried to use (or fake use) that first one?
You could probably bluff magic because if you aren’t actually intending to use the spellform you’re exclaiming then it won’t work, there’s intent behind the spells it’s not just a word that makes magic shoot out of nowhere. There’s non-elemental magic in Re:Zero too that can be used for other things through the manipulation of raw mana, so it wouldn’t be unlikely that illusory spells could exist as fakes, although you’d have to know how to cast the real spell too to emulate it properly as an illusion
Not sure if this was answered but. Are all Al Goas the same? Meaning is a spells power solely dependent on if mana is available or does individual power matter? Meaning if Roswaal fired an Al Goa and Emilia fired an Al Goa, assuming Roswaal is stronger, would both those spells be the same power

Great video! Man Tappei has created a really intricate and interesting setting for his story, hasn't he? Every chapter I read it feels like more and more unexplained systems get touched on and refined, and more pieces start to click together!

I believe in the web novel it's said that Altemillion is originally only intended to be able to control the weather over the size of a small village. The fact that it even went as far as it did is a bit of a surprise with how little time he spent building up the mana for the spell.

“So I wouldn’t recommend trying that in home”

And can you explain about subaru and satella love story in next video pls I need information
Unfortunately I don't have that information, sorry! But my guess is that Subaru will eventually save Satella from herself, and due to her time manipulation powers, she can see the future so she knows he's gonna save her, and that's why she loves him

Legend has it David has watched this video to figure out why Puck is the Great Spirit of Fire.
Also, if I remember correctly, the author recently tweeted that Anastasia has the weakest gate out of every character, with Roswaal still having the best one...
Sounds about right
I'm reading trough the QnAs the author did, and more on the power scaling:
I think the characters you mentioned are something along the lines of having the highest magic abilities, the list of the strongest battle strength ways, characters is:
Reinhard>Ram with horn, Regulus, Sekhmet and Puck's true form(witho including the ones that have not appeared up to that point, which was about 3 years ago)
... Although Reinhard could take them on all at once... Also, Ekidna apparently has the highest IQ... I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna completely spoil myself, but whatever
So, Od Laguna is not a lifeform with a will, but if it were, and if it were to fight Reinhard, apparently Reinhard would win Xd
Well technically Subaru does since you know he practically destroyed his in his fight with Garfiel
@@missinglegs what, Reinhardt would win? I think od laguna can take away his blessings
A little adding.
In terms of incantation difficulty (from easiest to hardest): divine blessings->magic->autorities.
Don't ask why (cause some explanations might touch arc 6 spoilers).
Why
Divine blessing: passive
magic: skills
authorities: equipment
Od Laguna giving Reinhardt every divine protection is the equivalent of putting all of your levels into one stat

Question about Al Shamak. Would the spell teleport the target to a dimension of nothingness (the shadow realm, if you will) or to another world, like Earth or other fantasy worlds?
The shadow realm, jimbo.
The Od Laguna concept reminds me to the Administrator concept in Tower of God
For those who don't know (ToG Anime onlys), in ToG every floor is guarded by one big giant Administrator who rules all the Shinsu in the floor, as well as the most important tests of every floor. And if they percieve a disturbation of the Shinsu's flow or an overuse, they could came out to punish your or simply send you to another place
Got a good question for ya. Why don't witch cultists chant the spell when they cast those fireballs?
Witch Cultists are mysterious in a lot of ways, but I'm guessing they're either using a different form of magic, or they're experienced enough to not need an incantation

SPOILERS FOR ARC 6
After finding out that Satella's shadows are based on Yin Magic, I wonder if all the Authorities are extremely powerful, corrupt types of Yin Magic, or at least based on them.
Now I am more hype about the upcoming next season of Re: zero😆😆
Wondered were this went, going to show my friend but it was gone thought I went crazy
Emilia Be Like
Its So Hot That It Became Ice
8:18 A rabbit in the snow.. Where have I seen that one before...
konosuba
Huma is water magic, and I'm not sure about the acrobatics part. I always thought Wilhelm was just very strong physically
@@Echidnut Really? Huh, I swear I remember Emilia using it at some point too. My bad, I guess.
@@CABRALFAN27 I think she did too. It was probably Spirit Arts in that case
@@CABRALFAN27she's used healing magic before, but I don't remember her using huma specifically.
tommorow Kadokawa is going to have a re:zero stream with info about season 2 so if your hype for season 2 i suggest watching that
also it's gonna be on the kadokawa youtube channel just to make that clear
Echidna, looks like it reads A-kid-na, so ima call her such.
That is indeed how you pronounce it
No its. E-ki-do-na
As an anime only this was a very informative video. I'm hyped for season 2!
Beatrice said in episode 8 that curses are simple spells before activating, so they are in the Magic category
Curses are a non-elemental spellform that function differently to normal magic, as they’re often used to inflict damage by stealing mana from the target. They’re entirely separate from the elemental magic spells
Dark most likely.
@@tiazoh dark magic is repeatedly mentioned in reference to Yin magic, but Yin isn’t used for curses
Roswaal's strongest attack may be Al Goa, but he can cast it six times simultaneously.
"They basically can't be gained or lost"
Reinhard: I have no such weakness
Really still confused on how beatrice was able to use wind magic in memory snow
Ahh she's a spirit
She can use water magic
Not sure if this was answered but. Are all Al Goas the same? Meaning is a spells power solely dependent on if mana is available or does individual power matter? Meaning if Roswaal fired an Al Goa and Emilia fired an Al Goa, assuming Roswaal is stronger, would both those spells be the same power
Rie Takahashi has the affinity to fire magic
