  • This is a first generation North American Ford Focus (2000-2007) - any Focus made in this date range has the same fuel line design. You will need: A Motorcraft Fuel Filter, 8 mm socket, 7 mm socket, and a catch pan. I have also included a youtube link in the video demonstrating different types of couplings which was useful.

    A good tip for this would to also make sure you prime the pump after replacing the filter. If you don't you can get a check engine due to residual air in the lines that causes a check engine light. Turn the car to on for 4 seconds then off for 4 seconds and repeat this no more than 20 times. This will get pressure back in the fuel lines. If you do have a check engine light, after doing the above you can then disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset the code and should stay off unless there is another problem.

      Also, those plastic clips don't have to come all the way out, as long as they're pulled up, and loose, the flange on the filter nozzle can slip through. Very thorough and well done video though sir!

    Matt, good job, good video. But I urge you to be very careful with your shop light with what appears to be an incandescent bulb. Those bulbs get very hot and if that cool gasoline hits that bulb and causes it to pop then you have a serious fire. Be careful. But it was a good video and now I get to do the same thing to my wife's Focus. Kudos!

    OK. I did the job today. Two problems I encountered: don't try to remove the plastic brackets. Just push in on the front part while pulling the lines apart. It works a lot better than trying to get the bracket out (I broke two of them and had to go all over town getting the right ones). Second, be careful when you screw the filter and metal bracket back into the chassis. I stripped out the bolt, bought a few new ones, and after trying to get those in, realized I ruined the inner threads :(

    Great video, this is a pain in the rear to change... One note though I did damage or it had been damaged by time one of the white clips retaining one side of the filter. One side is more robust then the other... These clips are available in the "HELP" section of the auto parts store. Currently doing allot of work on a 2007 Ford Focus.

  • @brianreed2852
    @brianreed2852 2 роки тому +3

    A fuse is a FUSE. Said fuse in not a RELAY. TWO SEPARATE PARTS OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WITH TWO SEPARATE ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSES. In addition, with respect to the removal of the CLIPS/FITTINGS, THESE ARE NOT BRACKETS. If you are attempting to provide proper instructions, it is advisible to use the correct terminology. Rather than pulling the ' FUSE' from the fuse box to eliminate fuel pressure all you need to do is to losen.or remove the fuel tank gas cap. SAID Procedure also relieves fuel pressure. On fuel injection vechiles, it is not advisible to starve the fuel pump module.

    Buy the Car Quest filter, it comes with 2 different size clips in case you break the old ones getting the filter out! Got mine at Advance Auto. And all I did was loosen the gas tank fill cap, not much pressure at all. About an ounce or so spilled out.

      Do not try to pry the clips off like instructed. If you just treat the clip as though it was a button it will release the line, and you can just wiggle the line off. If you pry these clips off you have a real good chance of breaking them and trying to get new ones can be a pain! If it’s not coming undone and you feel like you have to pry it off, make damn sure your filter came with replacement clips. If it doesn’t stop what your doing reconnect everything and hit up the auto parts stores to get some. Don’t strand yourself.

    I believe the European Focus has the fuel filter in the traditional position in the engine compartment. Gratefully Ford has switched to a lifetime filter in the fuel tank upon introducing the Euro Focus here in the states, meaning less fuss!

    Great video and it's a real easy job but it's hard to get to the bracket. You have to jack the car pretty high to get under there to it. I decided not to risk it with the car an inch above my chest. I don't trust jack stands enough to risk my life. I like to do things myself and save money but I'm gonna take this one to a garage with a lift. BTW to disconnect the evaporator line clip just squeeze the tabs on the back side and push. Then take a small flat tip screwdriver under the outer side to lift it out far enough to pull off the line, real easy.

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen 8 років тому +1

      No no. You're misunderstanding about the ( is my 5 gallons going to just pour all out). When you remove the 15 amp fuel pump relay fuse, then try to crank it, it cranks -15 or less seconds later it dies on you ( this is normal), try to crank it again, it cranks, 10 seconds or less it dies, this ensures the fuel pump is done sending fuel through the system. Your gasoline won't empty out of your tank. That amount you saw in the video was because he didn't attempt to crank it a 2nd and 3rd time, let it run and die within 10 seconds or less a 2nd and 3rd time to purge more fuel out of the old fuel filter and last bit of line running to and after the fuel filter.
      Ftr I'm not insulting or nitpicking his video, I did thumbs up, and appreciated this video.

    My 2006 ford focus shut off by itself while I was driving and all my fuel spilled out from the bottom and I had just replaced my fuel filter. What could be the problem?

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  9 років тому +1

      It sounds like the fuel filter was not properly connected, and caused the break in the fuel line which would have in turn shut off the engine (no fuel, no acceleration). Definitely worth taking to the mechanic - hopefully a replacement filter would do the trick, but it is important to inspect the rest of the fuel line.

    So can you describe what your car was acting like that made you know that the fuel filter was the problem? Mine's not starting up, it started up for a little today, I took the cover off of the timing belt, the mechanic said that disintegrated and was going to be $700 to replace that and the water pump, but I discovered that the timing belt is in pretty descent condition, so idk.

    • @MattStephensRich

      This was done as preventative maintenance. Fuel filter often isn’t the start of the problem, so would definitely recommend taking to a second mechanic for another opinion on what needs replaced.

    My 2007 Focus has a "lifetime" fuel filter, that is part of the fuel pump assembly. There isn't a separately replaceable element.

      Might want to double check the manual and fordparts.com schematics, as I cannot find an example of a lifetime fuel filter for a 2007 Ford Focus. Here's the schematic I pulled down from the Ford website of the fuel delivery system: www.fordparts.com/Commerce/RenderIllustration.ashx?id=431203109&f=3&n=F89Z9155A

      Thanks for the reply. I couldn't pull- up the link you sent. I will try to take a picture of my setup. But basically what I have is a large plastic shield covering the fuel pump assembly in front of the fuel tank. I've traced the fuel lines, and can't seem to find where there is a separate fuel filter canister.

    My Focus (same kind in video) won’t start. I’ve pressed the fuel shut off switch in front of the right front passenger seat. And my car still won’t start. Idk what to do now.

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  6 років тому

      Definitely don't want to press the fuel pump shut off switch - that is an emergency cut-off for fuel pressure. I'd recommend pressing the switch again to be sure the fuel pump is active. When you say "doesn't start", is there any electrical noise or cranking when you turn the ignition key? That is the best place to start, as some times the culprit can be a dead battery, dead fuel pump, etc.

    • @loganrufus1316
      @loganrufus1316 6 років тому

      The engine wants to start but it won’t. Battery is isn’t dead. When I turn key to when the dashboard lights up, I can hear the fuel pump hum.

      There are a number of components to the fuel/air delivery system. PCV valve, fuel injectors, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor - all of these are things that can be fouled up and cause rough operation. The best thing to do? Take it to a mechanic for diagnostic, or get a code diagnostic if the check engine light is on.

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  10 років тому

      After the first gen Ford Focus, Ford moved to a standard in-tank fuel filter for the Focus. These are life time filters that do not require changing over the lifetime of the car. In order to change that filter, you would need to drain and drop the gas tank, which is very expensive.

    If my ford focus is dying when at idle speeds, could this be the issue?

    • @MattStephensRich

      Would double check the idle air control valve instead - fuel filters in modern vehicles are usually not the culprit. :)

    • @broadwayfreak2007

      Matt SR you were right. We replaced the fuel filter and the battery on the 2005 Ford Focus, and it still died on me! We are gonna try the idle air control valve next, but sometimes the car will start, and then immediately die like it’s not getting any gas. It’s an intermittent issue. Sometimes it starts fine, but then after driving it for a bit , dies at stop lights or in parking lots when I’m driving slower. since it’s also have trouble starting, do you recommend anything else?

    • @MattStephensRich
      @MattStephensRich  4 роки тому

      @@broadwayfreak2007 Idle air control can be finicky and possible be the culprit - otherwise might suggest looking at the EGR valve, which also impacts air flow. Otherwise, it might be better to head to the mechanic and have them help diagnose. :)
