But you didnt mention the imrcv (intake manifold runner control valve) aka swirlflaps that retard air flow at low rpm for fuel efficiency. Eventually wear down. If one flaps falls before you fix it' it falls into the cylinder which causes catastrophic failure. Great video other then that. I have 07 zx3 five speed. If you could do a video addressing a perma fix. zx owners would owe you 1. I just bought a 2007 Focus with 175k miles and it shakes like nobody's business. This video was so helpful, just ordered the motor mount and transmission mount kit from 1A, looks easy enough to install!
On my 2003 and 2007 Focus, I've gone through 5 engine mounts so I can vouch for #2. The 2003 also had the ignition core go out. 2007 had a bad alternator too, so I'd say this video is spot on!
I have a 23 year old 1.6 Ford Focus manual. 181000 on the clock. Still has the original alternator, water pump and radiator. Never had any problems with keys in locks, electric windows and no engine warning light on. It's a great car.
Just bought a 2004 Ford Focus wagon, 181 on the clock and $1000 from someone who wanted an upgrade. First car I’ve had with zero rust. Had this as my first car 6 years ago and loved it. Changed the motor mounts so in the future it’s a easy change for the new car. Really excited for this baby. Basically a mini mini van with 28 mpg.
As someone who has owned a 2002 Ford Focus for 10 years, these issues are all too accurate. I’ve replaced everything mentioned at least once. Great video
Our 2007 focus 3dr hatchback has been a great running car. We purchased it used in 2009 with just under 40k miles it currently has 133k. Normal Maintenance has been front and rear brakes, rotors, drums, tires, ac top off, oil changes, and coolant flush. I have replaced the driver door locking actuator, both lower control arms due to deteriorating bushings, a muffler. I save a lot of money by doing all of the repairs myself.
Great video! NYer here. I have a 2001 hatchback Zx3 with 262,500 miles. MANUAL transmission. It's still going strong. It has the window regulator issue on the passenger side, but it hasnt completely stopped working yet. Today I couldn't get the key to turn. It took me about 15mins and 3 dozen attempts to get it cranked over. It also has that bogging out issue with fuel pump. Other than that very reliable car and fun to drive.
Key stuck in the ignition fix. Below shifting knob is a plastic tube running down through the console. Gently pull up on that tube and release. Problem solved. Worked for me and hasn't happened again in over a year. Love your tutorials. Thank You.
I just recently got a 2002 ZX5 from a police auction with 206k miles for $910 and MANUAL TRANSMISSION which is the MAIN REASON I got it (they are getting HARDER to find). The key thing is something that I did have a problem with from the get go, I lubed EVERYTHING possible that may not been done in GOD KNOWS HOW LONG. The oil was quite clean and SURPRISINGLY everything important appears to work ok even the cruse control.😯😁 It RUNS PRETTY GOOD, have to restrain myself from ZOOM ZOOMING to much because it RUNS SO WELL especially because of the manual transmission. It actually handles pretty good as well, need to replace the tires in the reasonable future because when it rains and if I'm speeding a little it does slide a little but not too much but enough to keep me from pushing it too hard in the RAIN. It holds the road GREAT when the road is DRY. IT HAS PUT THE FUN BACK INTO JUST NORMAL EVERYDAY DRIVING.😄👍😎
My original engine is now hitting 300,000 miles. I have transmission problems but it is a junkyard replacement Transmission with 200,000 miles on it. Some were very HARD MILES meaning I lived 2000 feet up a mountain and had to drive it daily for around 3 years of the life of the car.
It's a odd beast, most of the time the first gen of a car is the absolute worst for reliability but the first gen Focus is the best focus for reliability, they started going downhill after until we got the current one with that shit transmission
The zetec engine they put in those is damn near bulletproof, I've owned three of them and I beat the living snot out of them and they willingly take it. Only issue I've come across was a tiny leak in the valve cover gasket on one of the three, the other two have been just fine
Hes CORRECT about the motor mount. I bought my 01 ford focus 5 months ago and i had to replace the motor mounts twice! And the ignition part where my key always gets stuck and wont turn! Thanks 1A Auto, i love watching your videos! Im a woman and all these videos are very helpful for me, when it comes to fixing my car!
Have not had any of those issues with my 2007 Focus. Most bothersome issue is wheel bearings: Have done 3 wheels so far. Next is oil in spark plug wells, so replace cam cover gasket. That's about it. Still going strong right now with 123K miles on it.
I absolutely love you all for helping me to be able to figure problems out. I just bought a 2007 Ford Focus 163,000m for a $1,000. First things I notice is there's no defrost and the windshield wipers don't work. I hope I paid a good price. Oh and engine light is on so I'm trying to get that to turn off before I even go to inspection.
I have the problem with the key getting stuck in the ignition. My friend came over and showed me a trick to get it out on my 2007 Ford Focus. She moved my shifter You can shift it from park to anyone; drive, Nutural reverse, etc. then pull the small plastic ring on the shaft (just below your hand). Pull the ring up sometimes I have to turn it now that I have been doing it for so long. Put it back into park and try to see if it releases your key. I sometimes have to try a few times. It happens every once in a great while. So I haven’t found the need to get it fixed. Hope I explained it well. I am no mechanic and not mechanically inclined by all means if u can’t tell lol I just wanted to put this out there. If it wasn’t for my friend showing me I would have been screwed with having to leave my key in the ignition and having to pay $$$ when I didn’t have to for anyone who can’t afford and save the money for other repairs (maintenance) on my vehicle. I don’t recommend anyone driving my vehicle without me in it to explain the different things u may need to know or u may not depending on my vehicle that day 🤷🏽♀️ it can be a bi bipolar like it’s owner 🤦🏽♀️
09 Focus over here. I've put the original 54k miles on it. I hope it lasts forever! Everything is original on the car except the transmission fluid, engine oil, tires, motor mounts and AC evap. It's a good reliable car so far.
Good Video. Thanks! As a professional locksmith, the main reason the ignition swithc goes bad is from people who hang a ton of crap on the end of it. It pulls down the rear, tips up the tip and wears things out. Also all locks in American cars are made with brass pins or side lock wafers. If you are not using a brass key, you are wearing out the key AND the lock. Also those window motors ? OMFG what a Byzantine bow string winding cable confusion those are!!!
You're adorable! Thank you for the helpful video! Im on my second ford focus wagon; I love them! And yesterday the ignition went on my new focus, but I knew how to fix it! I saved myself a lot of money by drilling out the ignition tumblers, then using hot glue to secure my key inside the drilled out casing. So, basically, I just claimed this car as MINE, for the rest of its life!
i have a 01 focus zx3 i have had since i graduated in 01 i can attest to all these things , and right now im currently in the process of replacing the fuel pump and filter
Hi, I've had my ford focus zetec mk1 hatchback for 11years now in England, and I've had no problems at all with the issues you've mentioned, I must have got a really good one when it was built in 2004, but thankyou for the video, at least I'll keep and eye out for any of these problems, should they arise, I watch all your other videos, they are very informative and you make them easy to follow, so keep up the good work,
Just bought a 2007 5-speed with 190000 Miles. Body was solid. Power nothing which is great. Less to fix. He wanted 26 and I got him down to 23 hundred. Great running car and thanks for the info on what to look for going bad.
It's not what I know, but who I know that gets me to where I need to be. It's who I know that translates into what I know. Thanks for taking the time to share with us your knowledge. Knowledge is good with an inheritance, and by it there is profit under the sun . Can you imagine if someone like Newton or Einstein had never shared there knowledge ? We'd be left guessing in the dark about the mysteries of the universe .
Ive owned an 02 ZTW Focus Wagon for many years and for years have been wanting to upgrade and fix alot of issues..and finely found the time and money to do so! So Id say within the last 6 months, you name it and chances are I've replaced it. Long story short?.. I don't know what I would have done without the 1A Auto videos. Seriously, I have been very successful at fixing our Family Focus Wagon and I just want to say thank you..Especially to the gentlemen in this particular video. I'm horrible with names..(I call you the bonk bonk guy) lol. Hands down you do a wonderful job. Keep doing what your doing sir.. and Thank you!

Very accurate my dad used to have an 03 Focus and we replaced every single one of these parts mentioned. Some of them even multiple times with that said though it was a great little car had 270K when he got rid of it, and still ran like a champ.
Excellent video. Thanks. Our 2000 Focus SE has some of these problems, including the stuck ignition key (7:13). A temporary fix is to gently tap (toward the steering wheel) the end of the key. We keep a hammer under the driver's seat.
My 07 worst problem has been the idler pulley bolt breaking. After the 3rd time I drilled and tapped the hole to 1/2 and used a grade 8 bolt and it has not broken since.
I bought a 2006 Focus new and have never had any of these issues. The biggest issue is that the "sonic blue" paint falls off. Second biggest was the engine control module went out after about 5 years but it was still under warranty (although the car was only a 3 yr/30k warranty). Had to replace alternator, thermostat, battery of course, fuel pressure sensor, plugs of course.... it's been a perfectly reliable car, despite what numerous Toyota fans told me. It's been my daily driver for 15 years plus several cross country trips and has never left me stranded.
Don't forget the EPFS(Egr Pressure Feedback Sensor) and the Crankcase Emission Breather hose...the first one connect to two metal pipes via two short rubber hoses...the parts from the sensor that connect to the hoses are plastic and tend to crack overtime due to heat...#2 is a little hose that connect to the crankcase vent system and is located behind the intake manifold...it become to soft overtime due to the heat and tend to strangle...both things when bad can cause the engine to stall very badly and sometimes lose power or turn off.
This was extremely helpful, nobody could find the cause of my car shaking and stalling. My check engine light has been on for months, so many me panics and wasted time and money, thank you very much!
great video very accurate. i've got a 2003 ZX5 that i bought new. 165.000 miles on it now. I've had to replace the driver window regulator , alternator , engine mounts and i've had to pull the ignition switch and just remove the tumblers. only other thing i would add would be i've had to replace the thermostat housing twice. they are plastic and crack. All in all it's been a great car.
You are spot on. I have been playing with my keys getting them in and out of the ignition. I have a 2005 focus. Zx3. About 220,000 miles and still runs like a champ though. Great video.
Well I started buying alot of my parts from 1A auto because auto zone and such always send me the wrong part for my v8 impala. They always give me a v6 version and they don't fit at all. But you guys haven't let me down
I got my with 30k now has 142k. Fuel pump changed on my at 130k Engine mount at 120k Window regulators 2 times changed Key never had an issue Alternator never changed
Im at 170k and car is down got a new alternator just gotta put it in already put in a new battery and havent need to do any of the rest although i should replace suspension but is the car really worth it at that point? Knock on wood I dont have any issues with the fuel pump
Just watch out for when you need an alternator. If you still haven't replaced your alternator, I'd keep some flares in your trunk. When the alternator goes out, your battery will die leaving you with no lights. Nothing to freak out about, just be warned.
The problem i had when i got it was coolant leaking where the thermostat is at. As the part is made of plastic with heat being in the mix. Exterior part starting to come off like rear view mirror. Other than that just keep up with the fluids and filters.
@@joelvarelajr6495 Lol coolant recently started to leak for me, also the plastic coming off I had an alternator problem, broken bonnet lock, most annoying thing is instrument panel going bad with all engine, esp, acceleration reduced errors, rust does to my countries weather and use of salt (had rusted hole below driver seat) also changed the starter. I am thinking to get rid of my Ford Focus 2007 besides at my country local craigs list alternative portal is full of FOCUSes for spare parts........
I have had 4 Focuses (2001, 2003, 2007, 2005) since my first one back in 2006 and I've had incredible luck with each one of them but I definitely had the motor mount issue on all of them, as well throttle position sensor issues on the first three and an idle air control issue on the first two. I love these little cars and always end up regretting trading them in. Recently, I decided to get a back-up vehicle so I found myself a 5 speed 2005 full of all the "bells and whistles" with only 100k miles (my first hatchback/two door) on it in amazing shape for super cheap and don't plan to ever get rid of it. I actually got my second Focus up past 300k miles before selling it (four kids, needed a third-row SUV) and not once did that car let me down so I've got high hopes for my most recent purchase, being that it has such "low" miles on it. I'm not a Ford guy by far but I can honestly swear by these extremely dependable little cars.
I've got a 2001 zx3 since 2011 and mileage is 255600 and it gave me problem recently with the transmission ! I put Lucas in the transmission and it certainly has given my car another chance and a second wind as the acceleration grows and grows! Lucas is like a mechanic in a bottle! My mechanic told me he didn't want to work on it because he just knew my transmission was gone! Now he's surprised because I'm asking him questions about another problem because he thought the last problem the Transmission killed the car adventures! Not so! LOL
Great video clear and concise friendly and informative. I'm sick of being ripped off n lied to or of the assumption I know nothing about cars ? Thanku your my mechanic now cheers

That was EXACTLY what I needed to see AND when I needed to see it. I've been at war with mine for bout 2 years and think I've put MOST of these common issues behind me. Somehow even with all of the NEARLY back to back or reoccurring issues I'm addicted to this thing. Never thought a roller skate would be this much fun to drive. Would like to KNOW what may be ahead for me here so JOE Hyndai Tech if ur still around I think thst I would like to communicate with you if you don't mind.
I have a 2002 manual 1.8 TDDI focus and I’ve never had any of these problems. Just some maintenance here and there but still going great after 22 years
Dude, u nailed everything! Every single thing youve talked about, ive dealt with (or am in the process of dealing with)! Subscribed & thank you for ur knowledge
JUST BOUGHT ONE, HAD THE WINDOW ISSUE HAD FIXED, WENT AHEAD AND DID THE MOTOR MOUNT. OVERALL I THINK ITS A GREAT CAR I LOVE THE WAY IT DRIVES. JUST A LIL TRIMBLE ON TAKEOFF OR IDLEING BUT I THINK ITS WILL DRIVE OUT FROM SITTING AWHILE GOOD INTERIOR BUT DASH BOARD LIGHTS ARE DIM ANY SUGGESTIONS. GREAT FOR MY PROSTHETIC LEG GETTING IN AND OUT OF AND LOTS OF ROOM FOR WHEELCHAIR IN BACK HATCH OF WAGON. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR VIDEOS I LOVE WATCHING AND LEARNING SKILLS
I work on many of these ford focuses from 00-11 mostly work on the 2.0 duratecs. there are many common issues that are not listed in these videos. -Valve cover gasket, the seals around the spark plug holes give out and will leak into the spark plug hole, usually it doesn't cause an issue but if you go to do plugs and find oil then you know the vcg is due for a change. -front lower control arms, these have a tendency to rot out because if the design, and the rearward bushing is a common part to wear out. -water pump, very common for the bearingon the shaft on the waterpump to start letting coolant through usually doesnt leak enough to be noticeable unless you're specifiaccly looking for it. -Rocker panels, from 00-11 ford used some chip guard paint on these rockers, if you live in the rust belt then you probably see alot of focuses with rotted rockers, the chip guard coating they use traps moisture and they rust from the inisde out usually. -08-11 focuses tend to have the front calipers sieze alot more than the other years.
Dealing with my ignition cylinder right now. Thanks to you I now know what it is. Who to get to fix it is the challenge now! Thanks for your help. Great video!
You forgot to mention the valve cover gasket! If you see oil on top of the spark plugs when changing them or smell oil burnt oil when driving it could be the valve cover gasket. Don’t worry it is a very easy and cheap fix! I own two focus’s, a 2011 sedan and 2007 hatch. Great cars!
My first car was a used 2005 Focus ZX3, had it since 2017. Literally the moment I bought it from the previous owner I switched on the head lights to drive away, an electrical fire broke out. Quickly put it out and the owner had the electrical issue fixed a week later. Only reason I didn't back out of the deal was because the car had 65,500 miles on it
Like to thank you for joining my memory as I completely had a brain fart yesterday felt clueless, sounds daft when I passed my level 2 mechanic last year
I was afraid 2007 fell under the 1st Gen. Thanks for this video. Shed some light on the shaking and loss of power with the 1st 2 problems. People trying to get me to buy a new transmission lol. Gonna hope it's just this and save up to pay for repair
We have a 2007 Focus and it's a trooper. > 200K miles on it, and it still runs like a top. The only one of these issues we've seen is the alternator (but we've had to change it twice!). Now I want to check the engine mounts though, because it does seem to vibrate a lot when idle. (It's never been the smoothest running car, so I guess it never occurred to me there might be a problem.) We also cracked the steering rack on it, but that was... uh... operator error. 🙄😁 Thanks!
I love mine. Had it for a year. 175 k and runs nice. Gonna change some tie rods and links and look at the steering pump. Other than that minimal work and I love it
2000 ZX3. I've replaced the ignition cylinder, alternator, battery, ac clutch(without removing the compressor or losing the 134a), motor mounts, hatchback latch assembly, front struts and springs, exhaust hanger, timing belt, serpentine belt, and maybe a few other things I can't recall the name of right now...but the intermittent check battery light is the one thing I can't seem to beat.
Just sell the vehicle, I replaced all those things to & the engine still blew out. I should have sold it. & bought a Toyota. Spent 2,000$ on the vehicle & 6,000$ trying to fix. Worst vehicle ever.
I got Focus 2001 Ztec actually runs 215,000 miles and counting, about common faults yes i be experienced alternator, window elevators (4 doors) and motor mounts, the rest no problem yet, excelent car if you take care and give good preventive maintenance.
Have had most of these problems on my 2001 Focus wagon. Have not had any problem with ignition key, keep it lubed with spray dry lock lube. Fuel pump gave up about 4 or 5 years ago, was replaced by Ford for free, caught fuel pump recall in its last few months! Motor mounts need changing every year or so if you use the cheap ones, (Arrow), from parts stores, use oem parts on this. Window regulator cables broke on left rear door, other doors OK. Bigger problem is all four door handles broke, small pot metal part breaks on handle reinforcement, only metal part and it breaks! Alternator, on third one, used local rebuilt part and it dies after one year warranty, used pro rebuilt alternator the last time- no problems!
I bought a 2002 Ford focus zx3 bare bones with a manual transmission. It was a relatively reliable car, but I've had the fuel pump issue which eventually went away and was never replaced and the ignition cylinder, which was replaced. I've also had the valve cover gasket leak which I replaced, the catalytic converter which was replaced, then the AC blower motor went out before I sold it. It had 174, 000 miles before I let her go.
excellent video thanks. On our 2003 manual Focus we have to replace one or both of the front anti roll bar drop links every year as we have awful country roads in the UK. Another common fault with these cars seems to be that the coil packs split causing misfire under load.
Before you replace the ignition cylinder, make sure the plastic sleeve around the gear shift hasn't dropped down into the console preventing it from going into park. I've had this happen a few times and the result is you can't take the key out. You can just push it back up into place.
Had a 2002 Focus SVT for awhile and it would also randomly lose power on the road. Turned out to be a grounding issue - if I remember correctly, it was the one under the battery box. So if you have an unstable ground, might it not be a contributing to some of the other gremlins mentioned in this video? Uneven current causing alternator problems, fuel pump connections going bad, window regulators not going up and down evenly and binding cables, etc. Check your grounds - all cars, especially Fords. An anecdotal, case history - my Dad happened to be at a post office and a lady with a beautiful Mercedes car could not get the key to turn. The fix - the key was slightly bent and when he used slight hammer force to straighten the key it worked and the lady went about her day. Lesson learned? - she had a lot of objects attached to they key that would swing about and bend the key. For this Focus vid, the key looks like a substantial slab of metal but there are do and don’t and best practices.
You are right about the engine mounts. Mine is a '06 and a resppecfully 305000 kms...consume no oil doesnt leak and everything works. Even tha a/c...nice vidéo thanks!
I've experienced every one of those problems! So ironic lol. Also my back hatch sometimes doesn't close quite right which leads to dead battery the next day.
My mother owned an 03 Focus from 2004-2016. Was a solid reliable car. I have so many fond memories in that thing. If it wasn’t for living in the damn Rust Belt we’d still be driving it
We don't have a hatchback but when our 2007 focus key gets stuck , on the gear shifter is a spring that we just lift up and it fixes the issue with the key getting stuck. Mind you ours is a sedan not a hatchback so the gear shifter might be different.
My alternator went out in my 04 svt. I drove it that way for 6 months by plugging in to a battery charger every night. I could drive it to work, out to lunch and home no issues. Maybe total of 10 miles a day 5 days a week.
I had a 1990 Geo Storm and it lost the alternator belt on a long trip and never gave a problem even night driving for 2 days until I replaced it. That is reliability for you.
The motormount that is at the front of the engine under the coolant reservoir. is a liquid filled mount and they frequently go bad. and the ignition switch, if a person is having a problem with removing the key from the switch. they might check the shifter because they have a safety incorporated in them. that won't let you remove the key unless the shifter is all the way in the park position. of course that pertains to automatic transmission models only.
I've experienced the windows and fuel pump issues. Other common problems on these are the speedometer going mad and AC blower motor resistor fail. Brilliant cars otherwise.
My speedometer goes crazy too! I thought its from overcharging battery, which could be due to voltage regulator inside alt. Did you fix yours? Or do you know the certain 'cause of it?
@@jeaniejpeck-barge5778 Bit of a late reply. Its the speedo sensor that's faulty. I've had 3 Focus' and 2 have had the exact same issue. Cheap part and easy to do after watching a few videos...
I actually replace mine in my 2007 Ford Focus Zx3. It literally is sofa foam in a sealed box wih a plastic mesh screen sandwiching it in the main box. The intake for thd filter is routed inside the passenger fender (its a long snorkel). Its a lot of plastic and it is nice in a way, but I went to a Steeda Cold air intake which gave the engine more pep and you can clean and change filters as you desire.
It's a pain you have to take off the wheel and wheel well cover to get to it all. It's insane how long it is, it ducts all the way back to the driver's side mirror for the intake opening, hidden in the fender. I cleaned it out the best I could and left a few inhibitive parts off, it helped. (2ft pipe and bs screen before maf) The wheels chirped the first time givin' it the beans then the computer quickly regulated any fun out of it for the sake of the transmission.
Great video! I have a manual '99 1.8 Zetec with about 150k. I bought it with about 120. Runs like a charm. I drive it reeeal hard every day. I have an annoying issue with the idle when coming to a stop. Changed the IAC valve with an OEM one still continues.. it really sucks. Awesome car though! Only changed my motor mount from this list. Runs bit rough when cold but purrs like a kitten when warmed up 😁
Try checking the pcv rubber hose that runs to the back of the intake. The oil vapors over time like to break them down , so when the vehicle is started and is under vaccumme , the hose will suck together and restrict vaccume and the computer will shoot an egr code. My focus through that code but the engine light didn't even come on on the dash
the #1 issue with the 00-04 focus was the SPI engine dropping valve seats. probably not a problem for any cars left on the road because all the SPI cars are scrapped by now. zetec and duratec engine options were bulletproof
A super common problem that there is no easy fix for...the recirculation door. A lot of people think the fix is a new motor, but it's not. The plastic gear strips out and you can try epoxy, but the only real fix is to replace the whole heater box inside the cabin. Assuming you find one in a junkyard that didn't fail yet. I just leave mine on recirculate and reach inside the glove box opening if I need to switch it manually.
Just on my way to purchase one after my faithful Japanese car finally took me home at a slow 15 mph. I have a feeling it might relate to what was said here. Great info serious parts to go wrong. At least now I have additional checks to make on this focus I’m heading to see on a high speed train . Fortunately I have a return ticket and will be disciplined happily walk away

That's one of the early Duratec ones. All the early Duratec motors had a whole set of extra issues. The Zetec motors were a rock-solid design, largely perfected on the original Escort platform.

HAHAHAHA! I just bought a 2005 focus for $500, I swear it has at least 3 of these issues. We'll be in touch...

On my 2003 and 2007 Focus, I've gone through 5 engine mounts so I can vouch for #2. The 2003 also had the ignition core go out. 2007 had a bad alternator too, so I'd say this video is spot on!
God these cars hate their motor mounts. Still waaaay cheaper than a car payment in 2021.
Mines getting a RWC atm and possibly needs a engine mount
Me too on my 2000 Focus. I gone through one mount. How many mounts does the Focus have?
I have a 23 year old 1.6 Ford Focus manual. 181000 on the clock. Still has the original alternator, water pump and radiator. Never had any problems with keys in locks, electric windows and no engine warning light on. It's a great car.

Thanks to your videos, my 2003 Focus with 200k miles almost stopped leaking oil and coolant!
It seems the Focus is a good car if the only things you have to worry about are these common issues. Seems the engine lasts a long time.
My original engine is now hitting 300,000 miles. I have transmission problems but it is a junkyard replacement Transmission with 200,000 miles on it. Some were very HARD MILES meaning I lived 2000 feet up a mountain and had to drive it daily for around 3 years of the life of the car.
Keith Wao,,I Have A 01 Zetec With 206,000 And Running Strong
It's a odd beast, most of the time the first gen of a car is the absolute worst for reliability but the first gen Focus is the best focus for reliability, they started going downhill after until we got the current one with that shit transmission
The zetec engine they put in those is damn near bulletproof, I've owned three of them and I beat the living snot out of them and they willingly take it. Only issue I've come across was a tiny leak in the valve cover gasket on one of the three, the other two have been just fine
@@deejaydfc after 250.000 km and 17 years still 14 bar compression. Im kinda impressed
I second the cam cover gasket. Otherwise, all good at 175K.
Yeah my motor mount was replaced right away. My drivers window was also repaired. I have a 2000 Ford Focus. The car runs great at 20 years young.
+LadyCMitchell13 Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Good Video.
+Steve McLaughin Thanks for the feedback!
Hey I’m actually looking into one of these cars right now and I’m doing research on whether or not to buy it. Would you recommend it?
Just got the exact same car, 191k miles. Did the valve cover gasket, spark plugs and new battery. Bought and got it running for under 900

Thank you for the heads up on the problems of the Ford Focus. It was a great session from you and I learned now the cons of my vehicle
I respect your beard. Sincerely, my beard.

After the 3rd time I drilled and tapped the hole to 1/2 and used a grade 8 bolt and it has not broken since.
dang. i've had my 06 focus since 2008 and have not had any of these issues. i guess I should be thankful.
The only thing I replaced on my 01 zx3 is the thermostat housing on mine
I bought a 2006 Focus new and have never had any of these issues. The biggest issue is that the "sonic blue" paint falls off. Second biggest was the engine control module went out after about 5 years but it was still under warranty (although the car was only a 3 yr/30k warranty). Had to replace alternator, thermostat, battery of course, fuel pressure sensor, plugs of course.... it's been a perfectly reliable car, despite what numerous Toyota fans told me. It's been my daily driver for 15 years plus several cross country trips and has never left me stranded.
Oh and replaced the vent selector cable which is evidently the experience of just about every Focus owner this generation.
I owned a 98 plate and never had any issues was great car. Then bought an 06 titanium no issues and now im on a 17 plate titanium x, all good so far.
Those are exactly the five issues that I've had with my ford , thanks for the video.
Don't forget the EPFS(Egr Pressure Feedback Sensor) and the Crankcase Emission Breather hose...the first one connect to two metal pipes via two short rubber hoses...the parts from the sensor that connect to the hoses are plastic and tend to crack overtime due to heat...#2 is a little hose that connect to the crankcase vent system and is located behind the intake manifold...it become to soft overtime due to the heat and tend to strangle...both things when bad can cause the engine to stall very badly and sometimes lose power or turn off.

great video very accurate. i've got a 2003 ZX5 that i bought new.

I got my with 30k now has 142k.
Fuel pump changed on my at 130k
Engine mount at 120k
Window regulators 2 times changed
Key never had an issue
Alternator never changed
Im at 170k and car is down got a new alternator just gotta put it in already put in a new battery and havent need to do any of the rest although i should replace suspension but is the car really worth it at that point? Knock on wood I dont have any issues with the fuel pump
Just watch out for when you need an alternator. If you still haven't replaced your alternator, I'd keep some flares in your trunk. When the alternator goes out, your battery will die leaving you with no lights. Nothing to freak out about, just be warned.
Thanks for that info. Looking into buying a 2007 Ford Focus Station Wagon at 190K miles
Also, Focuses are already pretty buzzy and vibrate more than most four cylinder cars, but it's definitely magnified when the mounts need replaced.

Very helpful. I’m looking into buying a 2007 Ford Focus Wagon in a couple days and this helped me to know what to expect that could become a problem
Dealing with my ignition cylinder right now. Thanks to you I now know what it is. Who to get to fix it is the challenge now! Thanks for your help. Great video!
I got a valet key for 2$ taped old key by ignition. Works. Thought was cylinder just worn key
Great cars!
I have 351000 kli, and it still runs great your right about the motor mounts and alternator
Technically ,a great Car after all!
Other than that minimal work and I love it
I had every problem you listed plus many more on my 2000 focus. First new car...good times lol
Perfect. I am looking at a cheap used 2005 wagon that has 3 of these problems. Good to know common problems with common solutions.

What spray did you say you use for the ignition key?
as usual great video. weve used 1a many times and most helpful

I've got an 02 focus 1.8tddi for 9 Years now. Great cars and no seriously issues so far except for an oil cooler failure.
I don't have a ford focus but still good info
You are right about the engine mounts. Mine is a '06 and a resppecfully 305000 kms...consume no oil doesnt leak and everything works. Even tha a/c...nice vidéo thanks!
I have. 2006 Ford Focus, 184k miles and it's been a fantastic car until this year, 2024, when it started to have one issue after another.
This is exactly what I was looking for, great video!!!
I found a common issue with the focus is the thermostat coolant housing cracking all the time
Yep, replaced mine twice already.
Yep its because it is made of molded plastic and they split at the seam. Not like the good ole metal housings.
I'll be looking at 1 of these later today it's good to know what to look out for
same haha
Ac blower motor resistor? What does that do and how do I know if it's bad?
my right side motor mount went out within 3 months of replacing it :)
Have an 07 focus and would love to see a video on the "lifetime" air filter/ air intake because its impossible to find anything on it
+Br0k3n W01F We're always cycling through common cars. We'll add this repair to our list! 1AAuto.com
I’ve owned an 05 and 07 Focus. Doorman makes an air filter housing that uses traditional air filters that you can swap out.
Ah, those poor Duratecs.

Very interesting. I am doing motor mounts on my 08 ford focus SES. Also the power steering pump and high pressure line.
I have ford focus 2005 zx4 ses 180.000 mile and still runs really good never have any issues
Runs bit rough when cold but purrs like a kitten when warmed up 😁
Our Zetec had a bad ignition coil that caused some of the rough idling. Didnt set a code.

I think I'm the only person that manged to blow a zetec motor
@@_Boobz you revved too high
Just got rid of my 2000 Ford Focus after having it for only a year it was my first car and I couldn’t be more happy to finally get rid of it 🙂
why are you happy about it? i may buy a 2000 tomorrow! eeeek!

Very interesting Video, but one common and often to be found failure is missing, the speedsensor on the gearbox...
Amazing informative article from a wee coastal town called Ayr in Scotland UK 😊
2007 focus has problems with valve cover gasket....fails and before you know it the spark plugs are submerged in oil
That's one of the early Duratec ones. All the early Duratec motors had a whole set of extra issues. The Zetec motors were a rock-solid design, largely perfected on the original Escort platform.
yeah I replaced the gasket on my 2006. Not too big of a deal.
I got a 2003 zx3 hatchback just got the motor rebuilt and transmission rebuilt..love this car cuz i can whip it...with a lil nice system in it..i traveled all over with it but i wont let this car go its a very good car especially to be a Ford..
