'94 was such a closely contested year, that any director could have won. I do think Forrest Gump is an incredible picture, and Zemeckis deserved to win just as much as anyone else - infact I think people dislike the fact that 'a hugey successful commercial hollywood film' beat out a 'cool indie-style sleeper-hit' (pulp fiction) - thats still the more fashionable opinion - but in reality, Gump was a masterpiece & Zemeckis deserved to win - some stunning scenes & flawless direction.
How was Frank Darabont not even nominated for Shawshank?? I knew the Film was nominated for 7 awards (and Didn't win any) but how was Best Director Not one of them?
Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and The Shawshank Redemption were all great movies. Who cares who won? I sure as hell don't, but Gump was my favorite of the three, but the other two are up there with it.
You know the fact that Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Red and of course Shawshank (how the fuck wasn't it nominated) came out the same year and all had brilliant directing shows what a great year '94 was. While I would give the win to either Pulp or Shawshank, I definitely can't dismissed Gump for winning best director or picture. It wasn't an upset IMO. An upset would be something like Chicago winning 2002 Best Picture over Lord of the Rings (though it did made up for it when it ROTK won Pic and Director in 2003).
Pulp Fiction was a great film. But man, Forrest Gump was a masterpiece of pure beauty. Fuck the Oscars both movies are great. But Forrest Gump has a special place in my heart
God Kieslowski in the same category with Zemeckis? What a joke. And why the hell wasn't Shawshank Redemption nominated for Best Achievement in Directing?

Wow. Just look at the like up of movies. And let’s not forget Shawshank tanked at the box office wasn’t even nominated !! 1994 was one heck of a year for movies. I can recall at least 5 from that year that are in the IMDb top 50 movies of all time.
Sorry.. I said that over a year ago. Since then I have changed that statement. Actually I would have given the oscar to Kieslowski. Red is one of the ultimate films amongst films. But for a more family friendly appeal, of course Forrest Gump would win amongst Pulp Fiction. That basically what I meant. I just did not state it clearly.
Do not make another motion capture crap please. This man had made so many great movies yet wasted almost 10 years in his life shooting video games. I hope The Walk would be his come back.
The Walk flopped at the box office and while it got favorable reviews, it still wasn't enough. Also it didn't help that the 3D was so good that people were getting sick. I thought it was a great film.
How was Kieslowski nominated for Red but not for Blue (not just the best of the trilogy but one of the greatest films I've ever seen)? Regardless I think he should have won here. Forrest Gump is one of the most infuriatingly manipulative, pathetically oversimplified, insultingly portentous and overly mawkish films I've ever seen.
THE OSCARS prove one very Important Reality...the truth is THEY hand out so few AWARDS ...that is correct...there are so many GREAT Films ...and so FEW of the Really Great ones are ever warded...so Thinking there is a Best film ...or Director in this reality...the truth is they were all the BEST DIRECTORS of THEIR STYLE FILMS...That is a Fact...so the SAD reality that OSCAR AWARDS do not properly cover the BEST Film in it's GENRE...throwing them all together is SILLY...sorry ...it a reality.
The only reason Forrest Gump won was because it was 1994 and people wanted "feel good" movies. But today movies such as The Hurt Locker, No Country for Old Men, and The Departed are winning best picture. So if Pulp Fiction went up against Forrest Gump today....Pulp Fiction would win. Pulp Fiction is the better movie.
It's not fair to judge the movie of Forrest Gump because they're were many WONDERFUL masterpieces that year that YES should have won but I wish people wouldn't take it out on Forrest by saying it's not a good movie because it is!!!

I Love Robert Zemeckis He's My 3rd Idol Cause Of back To the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit!
This was a much deserved Oscar for Robert Zemeckis
+Captain Jakemerica Robert Zemeckis should've won for Adapted Screenplay for Back to the Future
Kevin Haynes BTTF is his original screenplay
@@kevinhaynes1691 no it should have been shawshank redemption for best adapted screenplay and soundtrack
How was Frank Darabont not even nominated for Shawshank??
I knew the Film was nominated for 7 awards (and Didn't win any) but how was Best Director Not one of them?
thats what im thinking aswell
Politics
Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and The Shawshank Redemption were all great movies. Who cares who won? I sure as hell don't, but Gump was my favorite of the three, but the other two are up there with it.
Red is better than all of them.
Kieslowski's as if he wonders "what the fuck do I do here?"
While I am glad Zemeckis won the Oscar it would have been so cool to see Tarantino or Redford win!
My favourite back to the future, forest gump
Babin Saha Also, The Polar Express and Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The man who directed Back to the future and Forrest Gump. He zeroed life.
what a year for film, Forest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and Pulp Fiction,
You know the fact that Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Red and of course Shawshank (how the fuck wasn't it nominated) came out the same year and all had brilliant directing shows what a great year '94 was. While I would give the win to either Pulp or Shawshank, I definitely can't dismissed Gump for winning best director or picture. It wasn't an upset IMO. An upset would be something like Chicago winning 2002 Best Picture over Lord of the Rings (though it did made up for it when it ROTK won Pic and Director in 2003).
i would have only given forrest gump best actor and soundtrack but shawshank soundtrack was better but sad neither of them both won it
Quentin Tarantino should have won hands down
Pulp Fiction was a great film. But man, Forrest Gump was a masterpiece of pure beauty. Fuck the Oscars both movies are great. But Forrest Gump has a special place in my heart
wow!! The music that gives goosebumps. One of the greatest movie of all time.
Good movie. I saw that movie, back in 1994. I met Sarah Gutknecht, back in that year.
1999 was a great year as well. The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, The Green Mile, The Sixth Sense.
Fight Club & American Beauty as well
God Kieslowski in the same category with Zemeckis? What a joke. And why the hell wasn't Shawshank Redemption nominated for Best Achievement in Directing?
Robert Zemeckis is my 7th favorite movie director ever (behind Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson and Wes Anderson)
Quentin will get his one day, pulp fiction was definitely a hugely snubbed film.
Wow. Just look at the like up of movies. And let’s not forget Shawshank tanked at the box office wasn’t even nominated !! 1994 was one heck of a year for movies. I can recall at least 5 from that year that are in the IMDb top 50 movies of all time.
Also, where the F**k is Frank Darabonts nomination
Darabont wasn't even nominated? What a travesty!!
Forrest Gump is great its truly fantastic but compared to Pulp Fiction and the Shawshank Redemption is there really a competition
Why wasn't Frank Darabont in the directing category for Shawshank?
Yeah.
the godfather came out 20 years prior to this award you mentioning it makes no sense
Christian Webb because sometimes the acadamy are assholes
I agree, Saving Private Ryan should've won Best Picture.
For me this list should have been:
Robert Zemeckis
Quentin Tarantino
Frank Darabont
Tim Burton
Krystoff Kieslowski
Ed Wood was a wonderful film. Burton directed the heck out of it.
How was Frank Darabont not nominated?? Shawshank is such a good film. He shoulda won!
I love Forrest Gump
How was Frank Darabont not nominated?! WTF
Do not make another motion capture crap please. This man had made so many great movies yet wasted almost 10 years in his life shooting video games. I hope The Walk would be his come back.
Wasn't Flight already his comeback?
The Walk flopped at the box office and while it got favorable reviews, it still wasn't enough. Also it didn't help that the 3D was so good that people were getting sick. I thought it was a great film.
He directed Who Framed Roger Rabbit which was way ahead of its time
& he wasn’t even nominated that year
Forrest Gump is great, no doubt about it, but to surpass both Tarantino and Kieslowski? I'm no expert, but this is confusing.
Forrest Gump is Overrated 👎
Good, Now show us a video of Forrest Gump winning best picture. That's what i want to see.
Say what you want about forrest gump but is was directed pretty well
The only reason Forrest Gump won was because it was 1994 and people wanted "feel good" movies.
@ethicaldisaster what zemeckis did with forrest gump is much more admirable than what tarantino did with pulp fiction. his best movie was reservoir dogs, pulp fiction was okay, and ever since then his movies have been nothing but an ode to idiocy with elements of film and pop culture.
I love Forrest Gump, but Pulp Fiction was phenomenal and Tarantino deserved that Oscar
I think Robert Redford should have won. Quiz Show was brilliant.
Robert, please please please please stop this CGI garbage and get back to proper film making. The Polar Express was a fun film, but this industry needs geniuses like behind a camera, not a computer.
Krzysztof Kieślowski is nominated... I'm surprised
it's funny how zemeckis name is spelled, totally incorrectly
@davedirector7 who gives a shit, thats the same argument for kevin costner winning it for dances with wolves and he stole the oscar from scorsese
1994 was a very good year for movies, there were just so many good movies to choose from for best picture.
We all know Tarantino was the real Best Director of that year.
Zemeckis may have deserved to win, but where the fuck is Frank Darabont's nomination for The Shawshank Redemption?
@thetevinator 1. forrest gump.
2. who framed roger rabbit?
3. back to the future
4. cast away
5. The Polar Express
Quentin Tarantino should have won for Pulp Ficton. Pulp Fiction should have also won Best Picture
