    DAYYUM! Never thought I’d see an AGM-88 HARM on a MIG-29. I worked on the HARM program for 10 years back when they were manufactured by Texas Instruments’ Defense Systems Electronic Group before Raytheon purchased it. Hell must have frozen over 😂

      Good day sir. Can you explain HARM rocket speaks to a jet? Can Harm use mig 29 soviet targeting system or is it impossible?

    • @TzunSu
      @TzunSu Рік тому +35

      @@dukenukem8381 There's a few different possibilities, the first ones reported was that they're being fired in a kind of dumb fire mode: Travel to X, then activate seeker. The other possibility is that they've jury-rigged some kind of control system using the several tablets you see that are mounted. It's for sure not using the MIG-29 targeting system.

    • @Whiskey11Gaming
      @Whiskey11Gaming Рік тому +37

      @@dukenukem8381 It's my understanding these are fired entirely in pre-planned mode where GPS coordinates are entered in on the ground and they have to launch them within a certain range of that point. HARM goes to a point and turns on the seeker looking for a specific radar emitter type.
      Any other mode would require integration of other systems which I doubt they did. the easiest would probably be the HARM Targeting System pod, but you'd need a western MFD and cursor control to make it worth it. At that point it's almost worth just getting the F16C to mount it to instead of to the MiG29.

      @@Whiskey11Gaming Yeah, i think the tablets that were started to be shown during the same timeframe as the HARM made a lot of people think they're related. They're probably not, they're most likely just using pre-planned mode as you said. The only other way would to use the tablets, but it's not like they've got radar receptors installed...

    Interesting observation here. It's at least 3 different airframes, seemingly flown by the same pilot (whenever we see him in the mirror).
    0:26 - This is a modernised Mig-29MU1 - No dash cover on the left, two switches installed instead. Russian HUD repeater screen on the right removed, replaced by a color MFD (obscured by GPS mount).
    0:32 - (Wild Weasel MiG) This appears to be a regular non-modernised model 9-13. Dash cover present on the left, original HUD repeater screen on the right.
    0:41 - No dash cover on the left, but ONE switch on top. Screen on right obscured by GPS mount, but it seems to be the standard elongated housing of the original HUD repeater.
    0:42 onward - Same Wild Weasel MiG.
    We only see the less capable, unmodernised 9-13 being used for SEAD and firing HARMs.

    I saw this the other day and I had a few observations.
    1. In a few of those shots I was surprised by how high they were. I thought the Russian air defenses had them trapped pretty much at worm burning level.
    2. They certainly aren't afraid to burn those worms. Some of that low level footage looked pretty darn low to my untrained eyes.
    3. I was proud of myself for recognizing the HARM shot in at least one clip. I know what a HARM looks like, but it looks a lot different in a Google image search that it does on a cell phone screen when it's blasting off the wing of a fighter jet in a war zone.
    4. In one section, you can see that air to air missiles under the wings showing in the left side mirror. I am trying to learn those Russian AAMs, so correct me if I'm wrong. It looked like 2x R-77s (the Fox 2) and an R-27 (Fox 1 IIRC). Timestamp 1:02 to about 1:05.
    Anyway it was cool cockpit footage and for the little that this helps, I'm with that pilot in spirit and fervently hope to see him and his country triumph over this unprovoked aggression.
    *Edit* ok I know those are the wrong missiles.

    To expand on my previous comment... I was also looking closely at the HARM launch rail we see in the mirror (I used a cleaner, 1080p version of the video from another source) and it appears to be mounted on the standard inboard pylon... but it's NOT the APU-470 launcher rail that normally goes there for use with the R-27 (which the plane interprets the HARM as - as seen on the HUD repeater). Nor is it the lower profile AKU-470. While close-up photos suggest the HARM and the R27 sit on their launch rails in a very similar way, it doesn't seem like either of the 470 type rails was used, as they both stick out far beyond the front of the pylon. This one is flush with the front of the pylon. So that suggests the HARMs are installed together with their normal US launch rails - which are pretty compact and have that vertical front face, and the whole thing was somehow bolted into the existing wing pylon. Russian pylons are mated with their various launch rails by two to three large bolts going laterally, which makes it pretty easy to fabricate adapter brackets out of basic steel flats from a hardware store. What I find astounding, however, is how CLEAN it looks. Either they took special care to make the HARM rail line up all pretty, or they went through the trouble of fabricating a dedicated new rail specifically for this application. It really does seem to fit like a glove.

      Also SEI-31 shows the missile as R-27EP (PRH one, not to confuse with R-27ER which is SARH) on HUD and HDD, that means AGM-88 at the very least is integrated into weapons control system. R-27EP can be either fired "as it is" and will go after the strongest radiation source (like Sparrow in flood mode), or given emitter sources data from SPO-15. If they managed to make HARM listen to Beryoza RWR that's some of the maddest skills.

    • @KarpKomet
      @KarpKomet Рік тому +3

      Bingo well spotted! The US rail is what makes the HARM integration possible, all the circuitry required to operate the missile is actually inside the launch rail itself. So the Russian jet can give the American rail a simple voltage change fire cue. No data link emulation or whatever needed. American SEAD pilots have pointed out the missile is probably loaded with a preplanned target on the ground and the mig-29 is, as you pointed out, pretending its a AA missile.

Visiting Ukraine, which my screens tell every day is a stunningly beautiful country, has become an aspiration now. They deserve to take my fucking money. I want to hang with them after they have won this. They evidence what superb people they are every day. Many died fighting, all of them should be remembered to gave their live for their country, for their family and for their way of live …

      In a lot of ways the Fulcrum seems like how the Soviets would have built a Northrop P-530 competitor. Combine the PFI's aerodynamics with the basic concept of the P-530 (~25 000 lbs, twin engine, some degree of rough field capability and ability to be maintained close to the front, high alpha capabilities, etc). The P-530 was mostly aimed at NATO allies in Europe so the analogy seems as close as possible.
      The LWF was always intended to be smaller/lighter than the P-530, that's probably put the P-600 at a disadvantage in that competition.

      @@alexkitner5356 So on the bottom there's a row that's an indicator of the source, probably a long or medium range scan radar from a SAM site or similar.
      There's a top semi-circle which is the angle it's coming from, looks like it's coming from off the port nose. Around the middle there's a counterclockwise circle that fills up as the strength gets higher, since it's a small arc in the bottom right that seems like it's relatively long range. There's also a big red light in the middle that lights if you're getting locked and flashes if you're being shot at. Oddly I'm not really seeing anything that'd correspond to the centermost indicator, which is a simple pair of lights for whether the radar is above or below you, which I'd expect one of the two would always be on if it's live.
      I don't really see anything that marks that as being particularly scary for a plane that's launching ARMs. You've kind of got to expect to get painted by radar if you're going to shoot at radars emitting at you.

      Now, since the AGM-88 is an american weapon and the MiG-29 is a soviet platform,. there are challenges in getting the HARM to fire from the Mig. So that's what the tablet is doing, it's there to provide an UI for the pilot to launch the weapon. and there are adapters so the plane and the missile can comunicate, the Plane thinks it's talking to an R27EP, thats the ARM version of the R27 and the missile thinks it's talking to an F-16

In the original video, at 0:32, you can notice the Head Down Display (Which is a repeater of HUD) shows the selected weapon as 'Р-27ЭП' (in the down-right corner) or R-27EP in English while they were actually firing HARMs. R-27EP is a longer-range passive anti-radiation version of the R-27 air-to-air missile. But for example, if they are aware of actual S300 or S400 sites that ping them on sorties, they can go back, load up on HARMs preprogrammed to those sites, fly back and wait to get close to the SAM sites and wait to be painted, and then just fire them in the general direction of the SAMs they know are awake and tracking, trusting they will pick up the targets and track them all by themselves for as long as they can. The MIG-29 is one of the fastest "combat/fighter" aircraft with top speed of mach 2.25. (reference f-18 top speed is mach 1.8). The main reason some people think badly of the MIG-29 is it's combat record (average record 6-18-1) but that's because this aircraft was so mass produce and sent out to other 3rd world countries with sub-par pilots. These below average pilots made the mig-29 look bad when it went against professional pilots with decades of experience. Not only that but it went up against the US quite a few times which is a death sentences to any aircraft that goes against the US. example gulf war. Though it's been redeeming it's name from wars that it did well in and with the recent Ukraine-Russia war the mig-29 is being used by experienced pilot in Ukraine and it's been shooting down quiet a few Russian rotary aircraft, su-27s and even su-35s. Tho admittedly the mig-29s are also getting shoot down by Russian aircraft as well but the difference is the mig29 is cheap and massed produce while SU-27/35s are expensive and limited.

      If MiG-29s received a similar history of upgrades (that actually got procured) as F-16, it would be a 1:1 match to it to this day. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. Ukraine is probably the first and only occasion for Wild Weasel MiG-29s to become a thing.

      @@delayed_control I like that - Mig-29 'Wild Weasel'... I give Ukraine props for their crafty engineers and mechanics abilities to come up with solutions that take advantage of what they have. Go Ukraine!

      MiG-29 isn't cheap to produce, which is its main problem and why MiG went from cranking out thousands of low-cost, single engine fighters, to relatively low production numbers on the MiG-29.
      2 engines is what hurt it, whereas the F-16 is produced by the thousands.
      The Russians have saud there wasn't a big cost difference between the MiG-29 and Su-27, so why even bother with making or buying MiG-29s when you can get Su-27s?
      The MiG-29 really hurt the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau in the long-term. Their forte was mass-producing affordable, single engine fighters like the MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-21, and MiG-23.
      MiG-29 was a bit of a departure for them, from which they have never recovered.

      @@delayed_control The only thing that could help the MiG-29 to reach parity with the F-16 would for it to be made in the US with carbon fiber structures, skins, US motors, DFLCS, US Databuses, US cockpit, actuators, fuel pumps, E&E, Radar, ECM, etc.
      Since it has a low combat radius and huge RCS, it's kind of a dead-end design.

    Lol “kill shots” 😂 There is photo evidence from the Russians of one HARM nearly intact after getting shot down and another photo of a HARM that missed and hit the ground. Just because a weapon is launched does not mean it will get a kill. Those HARMs are old, from 1991; some may not even work properly due to age, for example they may miss or have malfunctions. Similarly their age makes them more susceptible to jamming and electronic warfare, but on top of that they can be intercepted. Even under perfect conditions, ie: everything working, no Russian jamming or missile defense, HARMs can still be defeated if radars operate intermediately and then are moved, if Russian radars are turned off then the HARM has no radiation to source to lock onto, even if it has a ‘memory mode’ as some suggest it will be useless if the radar/vehicle is moved.

      Completely with you on these not being kill shots, but given the job is usually to supress air defences they are not useless even without a kill. An air defence site that is moving is an air defence site that isn't shooting.
