    When Dr. Bronk talked about being medically disqualified from being a fighter pilot I felt that in my soul. I got diagnosed with cancer right after earning my private certificate and getting a congressional nomination to the USAFA. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I'm thankful for the content you produce Ward, I live vicariously through your experiences. And thanks for bringing Dr. Bronk back to the channel, I'm always fascinated to hear expert analysis that's really lacking from many mainstream sources.

      Its tough being told "NO". Two nephews got the thumbs down from the Army for a hip issue that's inherited. One had done 4 years of ROTC before being nixed. The Army shoved me out the door after hearing of my problem knee that a horse slammed into the ground. I could've lied and toughed it out for most of BT but knew it wouldn't last the whole program. The Navy didn't think it was a problem but it was downsizing (post Vietnam) so that got nixed.
      A friend got washed out of USAF flight school because during a certain maneuver he had to flip oxygen to 100% to keep his thinking sharp. I forget the OX setting that was required but 70-80% sounds right. To the AF credit they tried to work with him to overcome his need for 100% OX but he couldn't do it. So he was out.
      But a success story was a squadron mate who wanted to get off the ground into a pilot seat. Every he was taken out for small aircraft acclimation flight (T-41B) he barfed his guts out. He discovered his garrison cap worked good for a puke bucket.!! Not sure how he did it but eventually he became a C-130 pilot and still is. He was a great "kid" and great asset for USAF so I was super happy for him. He certainly deserved it for his effort and skills.

    Based on Justin's description, I have to assume the Gripen was designed by the engineers at IKEA. You can service it from the ground, in the snow, wearing gloves, with little more than the supplied allen wrench.

    • @kungfreddie
      @kungfreddie 2 роки тому +28

      Gripen was designed kinda to be that way. It was a cold war plane and swedish military assumed that all airports would b destroyed the first day of a war against ussr. So many highways in sweden were made very wide with no divider in the middle, especially in wooded areas. Where u could move your airplanes to cover under trees very fast if war broke out. And since most factories would be taken out it had to be easy to maintain.

      I agree. The tactical analysis of suppression of enemy air defenses (from Russian side) is eye opening. It explains a lot of what has been seen in this war. I hope Sweden relents and supplies the Saab Grippin fighter. It could give the Ukrainian Air Force more of an edge. Sometimes those early years of dreaming about a career sets one's mind into learning paths that can still benefit those who DO get to become military pilots. (Becoming and Intelligence officer for instance) Knowing basics of flight, having an interest and knowledge of both friendly and enemy aircraft grants one a step up over someone who is say an Political Science major. The former can understand and have a grasp of the nature of threats, limits and capabilites of both friendly and enemy aircraft, while the latter may be great in understanding the political machinations that are ongoing. This.
      When I think how long it takes for our German Eurofighters to finally get AESA and Meteor integration… - we should have just bought Gripen. Not even speaking about the smaller logistics and maintenance footprint or its EW-suite, and that it even was available in time. Eurofighter originally was named Jäger 90 in Germany, but it was so badly delayed: we were lucky that the Sowjetunion / USSR collapsed and Germany was unified: when you think of it: the Luftwaffe was trying to play catch-up and introduce something that could beat the Flankers, and it pretty much relied on the integration of AESA and Meteor, which is still not done 30 years later! - Even Saudi Arabia got the newer / better versions. Tranche 1 is trash. Tranche 2 is only viable in Air-Air with IRIS-T and the very small amount of outdated AMRAAM the Luftwaffe might still have, and only Tranche 3 now is really something living up to what was promised on paper 30 years ago…

It’s not just his encyclopaedic knowledge, it’s his articulation and communication skills that get so much information and knowledge across clearly, concisely and without dumbing down. This was a 45 minute intel brief given over a coffee without notes, script or (thank goodness) PowerPoint slides(!). The same filter that allowed the TB2 to fly below the Russian radar detection threshold is the same filter that allowed the slow moving Iranian drones to reach their targets without being intercepted. The dopler filters on the radar guided AA guns have to be opened up to allow them to detect and target an airborne target going 80 mph.

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 2 роки тому +4

      Another reason for the filters on military radars is to weed out clutter such as toy helium balloons, swarms of insects and flocks of birds.

    • @jimgraham6722
      @jimgraham6722 2 роки тому

      @@orlock20 Absolutely, the filtering is called MTI - moving target indicator. Set the speed too low and the false alarm rate goes through the roof.
      To deal with slow movers you need additional techniques such as bistatic radar, electro optics (eg visual and laser tracking), infra red scanners, super high frequency radars able to spatially separate targets from clutter and most importantly point air defence.
      Hardening critical infrastructure like power, sub stations and pumping stations is also clearly very important. Even old fashioned things like barrage balloons may work.

Since February 24th, I've been writing about her ex-RCAF grandaughter training a 'reformed' Night Witches. After listening to the Swedish government's press briefing yesterday I feel hopeful that we will let Ukraine have Gripens eventually. The current Swedish government seems to take the defense of Ukraine and Europe seriously. Edit: If anyone wants to listen to the press briefing it's on Regeringskansliet channel. Unfortunately it's in Swedish with no subtitles. But there are some PowerPoints so you could pause and Google translate them.

      What will Sweden have left if it sends aircraft to a war that is perhaps not in it's best interests? New production machines probably a year to get flying. Training proficiency is not a 4 week course?

      @@TekAutomatica We have enough fighter jets in storage. We can also ask for help from our neighbours if we need it. This war is dragging on, so a couple of month's training for experienced Ukrainian pilots is doable. Servicing can be done in the Czech Republic because it's closer. Ukraine needs to switch to NATO fighter jets anyway, and the orcs will be a security risk for decades. Ukraine is not getting any new airplanes from Orcland, and Ukraine's current airplanes will need to be replaced.

    Clears up so many furfies that are doing the rounds. His closing remarks on the overall efficiency and benefits, of American support to Ukraine are brutally frank. Fine young man.

    Wow, what a wealth of information. I hope the right people read his paper and make the right decision to keep up the support.

      Yes, keep funneling money we don't have to a lost cause and kill 1000's more people. This way, the military industrial complex can keep making blood money.

    Very concentrated with useful info and insights. I wish/hope Bronk could speak to the US Congress and particularly make his point that the smartest defense spending would be aid to Ukraine in general, and air defense particularly. His point about supplying fighters v munitions is especially convincing IMO.
