To test the actual physical switching of the thermostat, you can dip it in a cup of ice water (going to be 32 degrees Fahrenheit, as long as mixed and ice still present). Observe it switching (closing, for the normally open model shown); then remove from ice water to see it switch again as it warms.
As long as the DF is above the trip temp it will be open, but if you measure it and it’s colder than it’s trip point it better be closed. And to be clear, when this switch is closed it only enables the defrost process, it won’t actually cause the unit to defrost when it closes.
Thanx. My 26 year old Kenmore dehumidifier started frosting up the coills (covering in white ice). It has worked perfectly every summer until now. It reads a closed circuit at room temperature on a work bench. Now to find were I can buy a new thermostat.
For the new guys out there - Not entirely correct - if the Ambient temperature is below 42 degrees Your switch will be closed. Just make sure to check switch in a room where the temperature of that room is above the temperature value on the defrost temperature sensor.
I'll turn a can of dusting spray upside down and give it a shot while hooked to meter to make shure it's not sticking open . Dusting spray is environmentally friendly
I been in HVAC for 30 years went on a no heat call this weekend seen a unit I've never seen before Lennox isn't that popular in my area a few people have them but not many this was a Pulse 21 90 percent gas furnace never seen a set up like this but anyway everything is concealed it has a air flapper valve below the combustion fan and it was raising hell what exactly does this part do I have no idea found nothing on Google to help so I called an old friend of mine that's retired but he has been a service tech for many many years and he told me that furnace requires special tools made by Lennox and very doubtful you can find them anymore if you could same thing with parts it would probably cost more to fix it than a new furnace would cost he said 25 years ago when the pulse was new it was probably the best furnace made just wondering if anyone has experience with this furnace I know someone knows about them but I sure don't
Yea, thats a good way to check operation back & forth. Hook up meter & put in freezer , then room temp , then back into freezer. Watch it switch back & forth. Could even put a thermocouple beside it to read temps back & forth.
As a Tech myself, anyone doing what we do at this level will always get a thumbs up from me. Keep up the good work hvac bro😁.

@@TaddyDigest I was taught that OL was an open line
@@Natsumidragneelkim it is lol same thing
I thought it was open load 😅
That 42⁰f is probably your opening temperature. At 42⁰f there wouldn't be anything to defrost. Lol.

very good
This man gets a standing ovation for pretty much repeating what Taddy said - only in not so many words. 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the tip friend. Saved $270 DIY
Excellent!
Your videos help me sooooo much. Thanks man.

Reminds me of the Carrier pink wired ones 🤙🏼 I hate replacing them things down in the condenser.
Oh yeah those are terrible I agree
Big time pain in the rear! Simple job made unnecessarily difficult. Had to take the case darn near apart
Love your videos. Very simple to understand
Thank you my brother
My friend, for here ( Greece) good morning,, you help me so much,
Im a fridge man.😊.
Hey my friend
Thank you for watching
If you are testing the DF and find it open as it is supposed to be, drop it in a glass of ice water to determine if it will close
good idea
That idea is new to me
@@marshalllapenta7656 Us old men have our moments

Thank you 🙂
Good video. I was taught OL means overload

This is great info
I love it
Thank you
another way you can tell just by visually(not always recommended and should always test) but the bluecap will be popped.
Dude this is great knowledge thank you so much for this
This will help other people that watch this video and check the comments
A warm DT testing open can still be bad.
I dig it. Thanks for the help!
Glad you like it thank you for watching
Straight to the point

Thanks man! Just what I needed

Does it depend what the schematic says? Mines says normally closed
yes

Thanks for info !
Any time
Great stuff 👏
Thanks 👍 Frank
How can you check to see if a thermostat is shorted causing the fuse to blow?
Good video ted 👍
Glad you enjoyed
Interesting stuff
Thanks!
You're welcome
Thank you for sharing
You're welcome William thank you for watching
I see that you tested these thermostats outside where it is warmer than in the freezer, so how is it possible to get open contacts...
I like your informative channel, recently subscribed…
Excellent
Are defrost thermostat, thermoister, and temperature sensor all the same???
Good info
Glad you think so!
Any idea if generic parts advertised for that btmrand would work? They no longer just sell that part. Thanks regardless
yes generic will work my friend
@@TaddyDigest thanks so much for your response. I appreciate it.
WHy they go bad I change one 2 months and now go bad again

yes

Open lead or “OL”
Legend says it could be over limit beacuse of the range settings. Open lead is not always true.
😮
That's why it says on the diagram NO -[ ]-
Very good that is correct
Did he say 42F ?
no
Put it in the freezer and check 😊
