CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: VALLEY OF THE DOLLS 💊 from STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies

- Patty Duke, Barbara Parkins, Sharon Tate, Lee Grant and Susan Hayward ripping the lid off Tinseltown in Mark Robson’s film version of Jacqueline Susann’s blistering bestseller VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (’67). Sex, drugs, booze & ruthless ambition fuel this story of the underside of show business and have made it a cult classic, maybe a camp classic. It’s a wild ride and one you won’t want to miss! 💊

Good for Susan Hayward looking after Judy Garland.
She was a stand -up lady!
Judy bounced back AGAIN at The Palace after this nightmare and on opening night of the sold out show she wore her dress.... from VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Indestructible.
Steve, thanks for another great review! ❤
@@HigginsDog09 My pleasure! Thanks for watching! Steve
Three cheers for Hayward and her demands! A classy dame.
YUP! I've always loved her.
She’s a barracuda
When I was 7 and my sister 5 our parents thought that "Valley of the Dolls" was a children's movie.... That led to forty years of family jokes.
A new Steve Hayes review never fails to make may day and I can't think of a movie more suited here.
Love it!
Happy Pride!
I had the same experience. My mom took us to a drive in to see this movies when I was about 10. I don’t think she knew what a “doll” was. And to this day, some 50+ years later, it’s still a favorite movie of mine and a running gag with my siblings. As a matter of fact, this movie was just on a few weeks ago, and my sister texted me to let me know it was on tv. So you know I had to watch it, again.
Happy Pride to you and so glad you like the latest TOQ " children's movie". LOL! Steve
Same with me. My Mom took me to see SOME LIKE IT HOT when I was 6, thinking it had something to do with the children's rhyme. She said later it was one of her greatest regrets when I came out 20 years later.
@@markroulette3419 Well, of course you did! Jackie would be proud!
My brother worked in a movie theater. Some elderly people came to see “Bambi.” The movie was really La Bamba, a Ritchie Valens biopic. They went to see it anyway.
Love that story of Susan and Judy .. it was very classy of her fighting for Judy 🎉❤
Indeed. Whenever I heard Susan Hayward's name, I will think fondly of her.
IYa gotta' love Suzie!
I think so too! Steve
This movie is everything. Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!
"Nudies! That's what they are...NUDIES! "
It's fantastic to see a new Steve Haves video. Makes my Saturday. I wish this were a regular series on a streaming service. Criterion should hire you.
From your lips to Criterion's ears! Thanks o much! Steve
This movie is beyond camp. Its so bad, it's good. A guilty pleasure.
Absolutely enchanting! LOL!
I’m impressed at Steve’s ability to throw shade on Jacqueline Susanne’s acting talent
Thank you for watching. Steve
What acting talent?
@@JudgeJulieLit I found the novel a page turner, but struggled to sit through the film.
By saying nothing! I've seen an old TV clip of Susann's 'acting.'
@@susanmurphy958 LOL!
NO ONE reviews a movie better than you, Steve!💕😁
You are too kind and I'll give you an hour to cut that out! OXOX Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ💕😂😂😂
Steve, this is absolutely one of your best reviews!! I was 16 in 1967, and Valley of the Dolls was the first movie I ever went to see on my own. And, naturally, I blame the movie for ruining my life. (Just kidding!) This is the first time I've heard of Miss Hayward's conditions for accepting the role, and her remarks concerning Judy Garland show what a classy lady she was. Patty Duke discussed her performance as Neely many times over the years with great humility, humor, and self-criticism, and I will always admire her for that. And now, I have to go and heat up the lasagna. 😁
I love lasagna! Thanks for the invite! ...sorry...couldn't resist...And thanks for watching and enjoying TOQ! Best Wishes; Steve
I love how Steve reversed the names in the theme song of the PattiDuke show , it's cute and so is Steve. Most people would never know it . ❤
I caught it!
Cathy was the sophisticated cousin with the strange accent 👍🏻
But YOU did! LOL! Steve
@@GJF118 I'm sure you did!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I notice everything .. I am just nosey lol 😆 😂 🤣
I saw Valley of the Dolls as a teenager & thought it was great. It may not be High, Grand Cinema, but it kept you glued to the screen and was immensely entertaining. Sad what they did to Judy Garland, though. Thanks, Steve, for the trip down memory lane and, of course, for all the interesting background info we always get from your reviews.
My pleasure. Thank you so much for watching! Steve
did not know that Susan Hayward made... them paying Judy her full salary after firing her... a condition of doing the movie. that's a classy lady.
Love Susie!
My favorite scene is when Susan Hayward’s Helen Lawson sings about “planting her own tree in her yard”. All the while an enormous Alexander Calder mobile is revolving overhead just barely smacking her in the face.
Which proves she was a good dodger!
Huge honour to Susan for standing by Judy Garland. 😡That director!😡 It takes a real big man - NOT!! - to beat down a fragile woman. PS Anna "Patty" Duke was a hero.
I agree on all fronts! Steve
Truman Capote: “Ms. Susann, do you consider your work Art or Trash”?
Jacqueline Susann: “ I consider it Art”
Capote: “I consider it Trash!”
And then, he wrote "Answered Prayers". Nuf said.
@STEVEHAYESTOQ Hahaha! And his name checked friends then froze him out
@@paulamiles9559 YUP! "Here's your hat, what's your hurry?" YIKES!
"...they drove you right outa' Hollywood... so you come crawling back to Broadway. Well, Broadway doesn't go for booze and dope!" Been waiting for this review for a LONG time, Steve! Thank you for another fabulous episode of TOQATM!!!
My pleasure. SO glad you're pleased and that it was worth the wait! Steve
Once you start watching the film, you can't turn away! It is as the kids say 'extra' in all the right ways.
I know. It's funny, a movie about addiction that's totally addicting! LOL! Steve
Oh Steve, thank you thank you for this break from all of the gloom and doom around us! I remember my mother and her friends passing around 'that book'. I think my father, a man known to read histories and woodworking magazines also read it.
There are a couple scenes in that book that made me do some "wood wroking". LOL! Thnaks for watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Lol!!!
I remember sitting in the subway car in 1967; everyone was reading Valley of the Dolls.
Yup! EVERYONE!
Wow...how times have changed...people actually reading a book? Today, when I take the subway everyone is staring into their smartphones like zombies.
@@jackjules7552 Well, from what I can gather the ones who read books now read it on kindle, because they feel books are too cumbersome. I notice that when everyone was reading " 50 Shades Of Grey" , which I suppose is this generation's sensational literature equivalent to "Valley Of the Dolls". Not me. I like holding the book and always get a wonderful sense of accomplishment when I see how far I've gotten. Old school. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ You are like me. I love holding a book and actually holding a book is a good way to meet people. Since it is so rare to see someone holding a hardcopy book or newspaper people are always curious and come up to me and want to know what I am reading.
@@jackjules7552 I always am curious and almost always ask. I'm always so proud when I finish a book. A holdover from childhood, I guess. Love books. As Richard Burton once said; " Home is where the books are."
Way back, I had bought the Dionne Warwick 45, "I'll Say a Little Prayer". The flip side was "The Theme to the Valley of the Dolls". My mother went ballistic when she saw that.
It's hard to imagine, considering what get's by today, how parents overreacted to stuff like tyhis in our youth. Thanks for watching! Steve
Helen Lawson - putting the "broad" in 'Broadway". What a delightful surprise for pride! I first saw VotD 40 years ago on the late movie after recently reading the book - I was horrified! But I came over the years to appreciate it for the camp value and was fortunate enough to see Patty Duke live discussing the movie at the Castro Theater a couple of years before her untimely death. Thank you for this wonderful gift ... happy pride to you and Johnny!
Happy pride to you as well and thanks for watching! Steve
Did you see her at the Casto live or was it the You Tube clip?
@@farrellmcnulty909 Live at the Castro.
@@tnate6004 You were lucky, that must've been a wild night. I remember seeing John Waters live a couple of times. That was a blast.
Hey, Steve! Thanks for that gem of a documentary on lost vocals. I used to be such a snob about films that I wouldn't even consider watching VotD. Now that I'm of a certain age I can see the wicked fun in watching these actresses chewing the scenery in every frame. 😂 I must show it at one of our SCREENING QUEENS movie nights!
I hope you will. I love it! Thanks! Steve
Love you Guys!! Nice to see you! Happy early 🎆 Independence Day!! 🎇🎊🎉
Thanks for watching! Steve
Great movie for pride month. Steve you always hit it out of the ballpark. I had forgotten Judy Garland was supposed to be in the movie. It's nice to know what Susan did for Judy when she took over the role. Now that's a Class Act
I thought it would be just right. Thanks; Steve
When you bring out 4 Mel Odom dolls I know it's gonna be a Lou-Lou. I love this, Steve!
LOL! This made my day! Can't wait to tell Mel! Steve
Great movie and great review! Jennifer on the phone with mother, "Yes, I'm doing my bust exercises". Hangs up, "Oh hell, let 'em droop".
" But i sent you fifty dollars last week, Mother!" Poor Jennifer. When I read the book, I pictured Jennifer to be like one of Russ Meyer's actresses from that time. Then Sharon shows up and she's somewhat delicate and perfectly proportioned. Of course, once I saw the movie I couldn't think of anyone else in the part. God Bless her. Happy Summer! Steve
Ooooh, it's been too many years since I've seen this one! Time to watch it again. Thanks, Steve! And Happy Pride!
Happy Pride to you too! Hope you like it! Steve

Best line: “Broadway doesn’t go for booze and dope.” Love your review Steve!
I'm so glad! Thanks so much for watching! Steve
Not according to Eileen Stricht.
I remember seeing it on the afternoon movie when I was a kid, all cut to ribbons but I was fascinated, because I had seen everyone in it very different parts. I realized it was a bit silly but it was also riveting. Then a few months later I found it in a box of books that my grandma kept, she got a lot of free books from giveaways from banks, (they did that a lot back then,) I asked her if I could take it and she said she had not read it yet but sure. (my family never censored what I read,) After I read it, when I returned it I warned her about a couple of scenes, but she laughed and said she was used to it. ( She also read Scruples and The Carpetbaggers.)
So did I! I loved "The Carpetbaggers" and love that movie as well. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ yes, it was really good.
Wow! That’s almost like my past life minus the drugs😢 . So Judy just did not make this picture because of her problems and I wonder how different it would have been if she did.
We'll never know. I think Susan was the perfect choice. She was tough and hard as nails.
The open pill bottles as your setting had me dying! Nice touch!
" I'm not crazy, I'm just hooked on dolls!"

Steve, Thank you so much for finally giving us your take on a film that's the ultimate definition of 60's era camp and a classic fun ride for those of us who appreciate it in all it's campy glory!!! I was about 10 or eleven when I first watched Valley of The Dolls on one of it's first tv airings in 1971/1972; the family had gone to sleep and I had to stay up to watch and was hooked, lol!! OH!!! THE MEMORIES!!!
I saw it on the giant cinemascope screen of the fabled LOWE'S KINGS on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn a hopscotch away from Erasmus Hall high school where Barbra Streisand went to school and graduated.
I loved it and stayed to watch it again. The majestic LOWE'S was the perfect place to see Valley of the Dolls. I thought it was better than Gone with the Wind. Steve, a few years ago, three nephews, sons of 3 different sisters wanted to put on a show with funny scenes from a single film, and they did "Valley of the Dolls" and they were hilarious, in particular the one playing Helen Lawson. They're all around 15 years old, do you think they're trying to tell us something that you and I already could have guess? Anyway, fun film and always a joy to see you!😘
I love to see the next generation taking on the classics... ahhhhh, youth! LOL!
I was so excited when I saw you were reviewing this movie!!! Happy Pride!
You too! So glad you liked it!
Wait, what!? I thought you'd done this already. What a delight to discover you haven't. LOVE THIS! "A big fan with all of the gays!"
Well, I certainly hope so! HOORAY!!! Happy Pride! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ By the way, I once heard in a podcast an explanation for the odd cadence in the theme song composed by Dory Previn. She was a drug addict herself and wrote that she wanted the timing of the verses to sound like what an addict sounds like when they want people to think they're straight (sober). Now that's all I can hear. Brava to Miss Dionne for doing a masterful interpretation!
@@FrankButterfield I agree. Though I think all the songs have that qulaity and remind me of a skipping record. I own several versions of the soundtrack, by the way. So don't doubt for a minute I don't love 'em all. LOL! Steve
Absolutely love your channel, Steve! Thanks so much for all the work you put into these wonderful videos. 💕
Thank you for letting me know you like them! Steve
Your reviews are always so awesome. This one was perfect for gay pride day. Thank you.
My pleasure and thnks to you for watching! Happy Pride! Steve
After this Martin MILNER was partnered with hunky Kent McCord in the long running hit tv series Adam 12……mmmmmm, I need to be handcuffed and put in the back of their cruiser…..😅
Then he could bore you into a confession. Give me Kent McCord anyday!
I always learn something from your videos! Thank You for That! Happy Pride, Steve and the gang!
You too! Enjoy the dayt and thanks for watching! Steve

The Valley of the Dolls theme song was the best. Patty Duke does an excellent acting job.
Everyone knows the Dionne Warwick rendition of the theme song. But I believe the best I ever heard was by K.D. Lang.
I love that song. K.D. Lang does an excellent version of it as well. Steve
@@roberthenleynola Me too! So languid and lovely.
@@roberthenleynola kd is the best!!!
Love the little bottles of spilled pills.
Sets the right tone, don'tcha' think?
Steve, this was your best review, honestly! You were on point with every comment. OMG, when you started to sing the theme song at the end, I literally started screaming! Thank you!!!
OMG! I love making men scream! Thanks so much! Steve
Now this is a promise to myself to watch this movie Steve. This is the first movie you’ve reviewed that I haven’t seen so I will fix that and then re-watch your review. Delighted to see this pop up tonight. Hope you are keeping well and thanks again for your great videos. 😊
