In Maxwell Anderson's hit stage play, KEY LARGO, John Huston directs an all star cast headed by Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson in a dark film noir set in the Florida Keys during a hurricane. Rounding out the cast are Lauren Bacall in her last film with Bogie, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Gomez and Claire Trevor in an Oscar winning role as Robinson's drunken moll. Shot in beautiful black & white with an atmospheric score by veteran Max Steiner and under Huston's typical fast paced and crisp direction, it's a suspense filled drama that's not to be missed.

I love how you inject each review with life, and capture each movie's unique qualities that make each one so special. Each review you create is a multifaceted jewel and a wonderful homage to that film. Thank you!
OMG! Thnk you Dorothy! That's about the nicest compliment I could get! Made my day! Thanks for watching and my very Best Wishes! Steve
A magnificent film with an even more magnificent cast. The hurricane adds just the right suspense to the night of terror in the Hotel.
I love this one as well! Thanks, for watching! Best; Steve
By far my favorite movie of Humphrey Bogart. I love the all star line up of Bogart, Edward G Robinson, Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor and Lionel Barrymore. Movie making doesn't get any better then this.
And the direction of John Huston. Fabulous!
Dear Steve, When I look at this film I honestly wonder how you could assemble a cast of such quality today. Please don't imagine I'm denigrating today's actors - it's just that here you are reminded of the best of the best. Claire Trevor absolutely deserved her Oscar, she was heart breaking, and of course Humphrey Bogart's quiet control was always riveting, but I watch Edward G. Robinson and remember your saying that he and James Cagney were introduced as "heavies" and just as with Cagney I find the term incredible, because he was so much more than that. An intellectual, an art collector, and in "Double Indemnity" he was the essential balance on the other side of the scales from Barbara Stanwyck; just as you can't imagine that film without her, you can't imagine it without him. This is indeed film noir at its darkest, but is there any chance of your reviewing "The Woman in the Window" which I think absolutely remarkable - Edward G. Robinson again and directed by Fritz Lang and I adore every twist and turn in it. Best wishes, Alida
It's on my list. I try to keep in mind whenever people are steriotyrped , that not everyone back then knew or cared about how interesting these actors were in their personal lives, to the industry, they were merely commodities & "earners" and to the industry, the movies that he and Cagney made which filled the coffers, were gangster pictures. So, they got stuck making more and more gangster movies And it took either a "Yankee Doodfle Dandy" or a "Doiuble Indeminity" to break the pattern, and even then it didn't usually work. Sooner or later, they were back playing gangsters ( "White Heat", " Key Largo") .Similar to Dick Powell, who was steriotyped as an insipid crooner in the '30.s and changed his type to film noitr to break free and revive his career.Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I'm sorry, you're so insightful about the business while I find it difficult to forget the reality of the actors. A bit like finding out that Vincent Price, who made all those horror films, was an absolute sweetie in real life. Best wishes, Alida
Claire Trevor breaks my heart....and becomes an unwitting heroine.
She could make any role interesting no matter what or how large th part. Consumate pro.
Quick story about Robinson. He was appearing at a synagogue event, where my father was the cantor. He asked my father, in Yiddish, where he might find a "glazele tea".
LOL! So sweet! Thanks so much for watching! The next time you watch , please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Steve, I know this is one of your older reviews but I have to tell you that I was totally blown away by how well this clip was edited. It’s just fantastic - kudos to you, Johnny, and your editor !! (Btw - what the heck are kudos anyway ?).
You can sure she the love between Miss zBacall and Bogart ,Edward G. Robinson has never given a bad performance.
Every performance in "key Largo" is right on the money! Steve
One of my favourite movies and i've never seen a better review. Thanks Steve.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but I think that I will pick it up again. John Huston was an absolute genius as a director. He was a real artist at film making. My favorite John Huston movie is "The Night of the Iguana" which was beautifully filmed and all of the cast went above and beyond with their characters. I never appreciated Richard Burton as an actor until I saw him in that movie. Great review, as usual, Steve. Can hardly wait for the next one.
I loved so many of his films. I also love "Iguana"
Another winning review by Steve. Thanks for highlighting the over the top standout performance of the magnificent Clair Trevor.
I don't think she was over the top. I've known to many aloholics who acted just like her. For me, she was right on the money.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Perhaps I did not use the best phrase to describe her performance. How about great, spot on, scene stealing, and remarkable.
Loved this movie. I remember Claire Trevor from "Stagecoach" (1939) with John Wayne and the great Thomas Mitchell from "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington".
Check out Clare Trevor in two of her film noir femme fatale roles; "Murder , My Sweet" and "Born To Kill", a kinky little noit inwhich she plays a rich society woman with a weakness for serial killers. Creepy and fascinating! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Her performance in Born to Kill is Wonderful💙 Wicked lady.
This is my second favorite Bogart movie, thank you for reviewing it, Steve! As always, your insight gives me a fresh take on my favorites. Hope you have a wonderful new year!

Bogart as Duke Mantee from Petrified Forest was the original 'holed up killer' - ironic that he is up against Johnny Rocco.
brillinant film
great actors
Bacall never looked more lovely
Trevor definitely stoled the show!!!
The ensemble is terrific.
Interesting how Bogart appeared in four movies about people holed up with a criminal: "Petrified Forest", "Key largo", "Desperate Hours", and another "Petrified Forest" for tv.
Yeah, well he obviously didn't do well in tight quarters.
One of the few instances where high expository like story telling works. On top of that add the production and you get a great film. Watched it a few minutes ago and I loved it! Hey Steve, keep up with these classic reviews! Would you mind doing Rope? I found a lot similarities between this and Rope. Thanks!
So much to do with the casting as well. It's a perfect ensemble, each actor doing outstanding work in roles that seemed tailored made for them. Thanks for watching!
Sometimes I have to back it up and watch Steve's expression in some hilarious bit over and over while I laugh and laugh. As in the last few seconds of this (as usual) wonderful review. Gosh! he's fun!!!!!! (Besides being brilliant and darling.)
Awww, thanks so much, Ginny!
I loved Claire Trevor....
Yeah. Great actress.
Edward G. Robinson was sensational in this movie. A real Oscar travesty that he was not nominated for this role. Even bigger travesty that he never won an Oscar in his career.
I totally agree! Unbelieveable! I think he would have won supporting actor if he'd allowed them to nominate him in that catagory. But then, why should he? He acted rings around everyone.
He was never even nominated. Myrna Loy, Joseph Cotten, Edward Arnold never nominated. Amazing.
Key Largo is a great movie i saw it a couple days ago!Gotta love the classics
Yup! Thanks for watching!
Excellent review.
Thans. I love this one.
Steve, you've forgotten more about the movies than most people will ever know! You're amazing!!
No, I've forgotten more about my life than the movies. YIKES!
Lauran BaCall, She was such a drama queen. I love the way you tell the story. Your awesome Steve. Keep doing a marvelous job.

I don't know where to make a suggestion so I'll try here. Leo McCary's "Make Way for Tomorrow" starring Beaulah Bondi. McCary won the Oscar that year for The Awful Truth and said at the Oscar ceremony that they gave it to him for the wrong picture. Anyway, it's an amazing film. We all love you Steve.
Actually I think her singing was very good. But it was definitely an awkward, uncomfortable scene because her character is forced to sing.
As always, an excellent show and presentation.
The film noir - the greatest chapters in the history of cinema! Starting with the 1930 and 1955's film noir created by great directors and actors of high class! Which of the current actors can now replace Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, and Edmond O' Brian ...? No one! There are no such persons, who could now mimic film noir. America, as most of these films belong to the film companies of the country, created a fashion, clothes, hats, cigars, whiskey, cars, sparkling night of advertising, casinos, restaurants, and so forth, just yet created ideal breeding ground for crime novels, which served the script for the black-and-white films. Prohibition has created a mafia and gangsters, in their turn became the heroes of many "black" films. The great director Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, John Huston, Robert Siodmak, Rudolph Mate, Billy Wilder and Otto Perminger, Raoul Walsh, Jean Negulesco, Edward Dmytryk, ........ they are not repeatable !!! See the film noir. About 200 of the immortal masterpieces of world cinema! Long live the film noir !!! My eternal love of film noir !!!
AMIRKHAN NOIR not just lacking film noir actors but great actors for most parts. Who could fill a William Powell or Jean Harlow role now? They'd cast Clooney and J Lawrence. Clooney for me as a woman has never been charming or debonair but merely trying to be that way, but you can see the effort behind it. I do like Lawrence but she's no Harlow. Who could you cast in a The Thin Man remake? Well, here's hoping they NEVER re make it, it's a terrible idea though which means it's probably on the cards. I think Robert Downey Jr is the actor who could come closest. He's a cut above most of the others of today and appeals to me as a classic movie fan, it must be something about him particularly because I notice his appeal to others too. Today's actors just don't measure up comparatively unfortunately. It's like they make films based purely on their pay day now, you want them in an awful turkey? Sure, they'll make it for you! Just pay their asking price and they'll do a Michael Bay film with Megan Fox.
Film Noir is by far my favourite genre!

Rapid fire slapping!
Speaking of Humphrey Bogart, have you seen "The Caine Mutiny"? That's one of my favorite movies ever.
Another on my "To Do' list. I love Robert Francis. So sad he died so tragically early.
Great job, as always. Thanks and stay well.
You too! Stay safe!
Hey Steve, how about “ In A Lonely Place” ?
I know I'm late to the party but this is great review to a great movie. I'm off to my lecture on Argentine Cyramics.
LOL! "And they ain't Argentibne, their Egyptian!" Thanks for watching! Best; Steve

Lovely review!
Thanks, Gary!
love this film.
Still waiting for your review of Kitty with Constance Collier
Sorry, but it may be awhile. I don't want you g holding your breath through the hoildays. Have good ones and don't give up hope. LOL! Best; Steve
What could be bad, with this great cast. Claire Trevor one of my all like favorites. All of them are, really. Great line when Bogart says something to Ed. G. to the effect of, greatly paraphrased: "What else do you want, Rocco? You got all the casino's, you got all the dames, You got everything." Rocco says: "I. Want. MORE."
Eddfie G was SO underrated ! He should have had an Oscar for this.
Great choice Steve!

👏👏👏👏👏
Naaaaailed it!!!!
Hooray! Mission accomplished!
Good review. But Steve, I see you are embodying, literally, Claire Trevor. Totally missing Bogie's act of HEROIC VIRTUE. The only movie I have ever seen where the simple act of making a woman a drink is an act of heroic virtue.
Thanks so much for watching! The next time you watch , please take a moment and push the "LIKE" button. It really helps!.
Hahaha he totally was !!
Can it be....BOGIE BITCH-SLAPPED?!!!
I watched "Key Largo" once on TV but will not watch it again. At the end of the movie two Seminole Native American men are gunned down by a policeman for no reason and with no consequences to the man who murdered them. How did that scene contribute to the film? It was gratuitous and ugly and ruined the experience of watching this movie.
I agree.
Rapid fire slapping!
