  • @TexasJon1
    @TexasJon1 5 років тому +82

    I had a 2003 Silverado LT 4x4 with Quadrasteer. It was incredibly maneuverable, easy to park and pulled trailers really well. I even liked the slightly flared fender look it had. The only issue I had with the Quadrasteer system was it made the rear axle quite heavy and you could really feel it bounce around behind you. The suspension tuning was never quite right and it felt like the front end and rear end were tuned by completely different teams. The front would soak up a big bump or pothole without much issue, and a moment later the rear would hit the same bump and bounce 2 - 3 times. This was especially bad if the bump/hole/impact was on only one side of the truck. I’m sure with modern suspension systems this could be eliminated (or at least greatly reduced), but it sure was annoying in my truck.

      Did you have to pay extra for alignments or did you not keep it long enough to find out? It's a huge pain to do 4 wheel alignments when all 4 corners steer.

    • @acdii
      @acdii 5 років тому +5

      Agreed on all counts. Thats why I bought it, it steered really well in tight situations, but thats about all it was good for, the entire package together though, SMH, just didn't work.

    • @randinman1588
      @randinman1588 5 років тому +1

      I had the same truck. 290k with zero issues. Towing was simpler and the heaver axle handled overloading (2k+) many times. The wider rear stance and rear end swinging to the opposite direction when pulling away from a curb took getting used to. The 38ft. turning radius was awesome.
      I traded it in for a '17 Silverado and was very disappointed in the handling by comparison.

    • @kelsenjames7154

      GM made and was testing a second gen quadrasteer that fit in normal box width but the demand wasn't there so got canned

  • @jdla140
    @jdla140 5 років тому +2

    GM's quadrasteer system is absolutely incredible when towing. The truck and trailer switch flawlessly between lanes and around corners as if they are one single unit, there's almost no sway at all. Plus being able to swing a crew cab 6.5' bed truck into a parking spot without any effort at all is amazing. I always thought if Ford had been the one to implement quadrasteer it would likely still be for sale.
    Also, to all the idiots claiming "it's more stuff to go wrong", "what happens when the wheels stay turned", etc My 2002 Sierra Denali has over 315,000 miles and the only part to wear out on the rear end has been one tie rod end. Suspension part failure is negligible. And quadrasteer had a failsafe centering spring to return the rear tires to center if there was ever an issue, i'm sure this new system will be just as secure and perform even better than quadrasteer ever did. If you don't like it, don't buy it, and don't bitch.

I didn’t pay a lot extra for it due to it being a promotional vehicle. Meaning someone at GM Detroit used it for 1500 miles then it was sent to my local dealer to be sold. Fortunately for me it had a sticker price of 43,000 but I got it for 32,000. It had everything except a sun roof. Be it a tow behind or gooseneck or fifth wheel (commercial which I have experience operating) trailer, they all have the same dynamics when it comes to reversing, but unlike with the later a convention pull behind has a much more limited turning angle. dependent on the style of tongue it has be it a bar ot a frame which are the toughest to back up with only 60 degree or turning angle at best.

    Another thing not shown here is off road performance. With my 2004 Denali in 2wheel steer my rear tires would track in the ruts on a mudy trail making control difficult. With 4 wheel steer the rear of the truck climbs out of ruts. This is why serious off road buggies have 4 wheel steer, it gives huge advantages. Also keeps the truck from going into roll over situations at high speeds. Lexus also has it and Cadilac for luxury purposes.

    • @jdla140
      @jdla140 5 років тому

      That was due to the track width difference between the front and rear. It looks like they have managed to keep track width the same between front and rear on this system.

    • @thomaspaul2465
      @thomaspaul2465 5 років тому

      jdla140 the track width does not keep you out of the ruts. At 4 inches you are 2 inches wider on each side. My rear tires were still in the rut. I tested it both ways so I know the difference. The rear end is active in 4 wheel steer and climbs out of the rut, way more control off roading. Just google 4 wheel steering dune buggies if you want to see the difference. Also Delphi fixed the track width in 2005 but the truck never went into production. At the start of the video it is shown. Mine was way cooler, I liked the wider track, because it was mild but had lights on the wider fender, cool looking and a bit more stable.

A friend worked at a Honda dealer at the time, and the repair costs were high... and the frequency of vehicle accidents were disproportional to cars with out the 4 wheel steering. Owners and mechanics were crashing the prelude because they were familiar with how the steering reacted. If I remember correctly, the Prelude counter-steered at slow speed and at higher speeds, the rear wheels would turn in the same direction as the front but at a lower degree.

We have gone a long way from the first trucks that had quad steer to today's system, also ten speed transmittions another one that was criticized and now is on most new trucks, or the famous Eco boost engine, can't say it wasn't successful. For those mentioning how GMC, did it first.
    Do y’all even watch the video? They clearly acknowledge it in within the first minute.
    And this is not a Ford system, they just use a Ford Truck as a platform to demonstrate the system further developed by ZF. This system can be applied to any truck through ZF.
    For those claiming it will never make it further into market, luxury vehicles (such as Audi) continued the option since the concept’s first inception in the 80s.
    The reason why it’s considered a possible future feature is with consideration of full industry adoption. Basically becoming a standard option. Lots of people said the same thing about projector beam headlights, and now they’re everywhere.
    This thing isn’t some gimmick like Dodge Barn Door tailgates. This re-innovation show’s promising performance improvement that can be added to already non-bias existing platforms. The further this develops, the less it will cost, and the more standard it will become.

    I couldn’t imagine a truck with 8 ball joints and 2 more cv/u-joints, especially from Chevy.

    Didn't the GMC trucks try this for a brief time and it flopped???
    So ZF is making transmissions and steering systems? 💰 💰!!
    Funny how they're using a Ford and not another GM product😂

    That’s why I like my old boat trailer turned into a utility trailer. The hitch is really long and it’s stable.
    Some day there should be electric cars with wheels that can turn 90 degrees so the car can go sideways in or out of a parking space.

      I use both but most of the time were I'm backing up the mirrors dont help as in the truck is not in line with the trailer but if its just the truck than the mirrors help get really close to the other vehicles

    Large medium duty straight trucks with tandem and tri-axles offered this on the front tandem, although it would only turn the front rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels to make it easier to maneuver corners.
    Production cars like Honda offered this in the the late 1980's. Subaru had it on the SVX in the early 90's. It was the future years ago.
    The benefits didn't outweigh the added weight and cost back then. With electric power steering becoming the norm, they can probably make it cheaper and lighter now.
    There is definitely a benefit to larger vehicles like large SUV's and pickup trucks when it comes to getting around town and parking.

      Jason Becker - it was a $4,000 option. In the early 2000’s. Additionally, have you ever driving a quadtrasteer?
      Great idea, but the front and rear axle were totally different teams. Felt like two completely different vehicles.

    I drove a couple of the quadsteer GM trucks back when they were new. I liked it a lot. The best thing was the outstanding close quarters maneuverability of it. It just flat out worked great. I was disappointed it was a market failure. I was hoping it would make it to the suburban.

    Ford: turbo v6 is the future!
    Gm: yea we remember the 80's
    Ford: rear steer is the future
    Gm: yea the 2000's were fun
    Ha ha I know it's all different systems now, just wanted to laugh. When ford does it, get's all the praise. When GM does it, get's all the critics.
