Long time subscriber and major fan of your company and your vehicles. You are doing everything right and I love the way you demonstrated rear steer turning radius. Would have been interesting to see a 4x4 with rear steer, or a 6x6 and 8x8 with all wheel steering. But you included enough information to extrapolate the likely results. Good video.
But I did have one issue with your previous video on electric vehicles. You talked about all the drive systems that don't make sense for off-roading and explained why they don't make sense and that electric drive is not a viable option. However you neglected to mention the one system that does make sense for off-roading and has been being used for off-roading for more than 70 years. Diesel generator with optimized fuel use powering electric drive motors with superior torque characteristics with an intermediary small battery bank meant to handle surges in demand during acceleration that exceed the generators capacity. The same system that has been in use for every diesel electric locomotive ever made and for all the biggest mining equipment in the world for the last half century.
A company in British Columbia, Canada, named Edison Motors is producing a diesel electric Logging truck with 440 HP electric drive axles, designed to handle up to 4 drive axles for a combined total of 1760HP, but more realistically with only two drive axles giving 880HP. This vehicle is being produced for heavy industrial use in mining, forestry and oilfield and can more than match MAN. Its an electric truck with an in built level four fast charger that kicks on and off as needed when the small battery pack gets low on charge and their numbers claim 80% more range out of an equivalent amount of fuel due to a smaller more efficient diesel motor being able to generate enough energy for the more efficient electric drive motors to do the job.
They also discovered that when they removed the heavy drive components, transmission, and put in a lighter engine, they were able to add all the electric components, generator and batteries and still be 3000Kg lighter while doubling the horsepower. As an electric vehicle it also qualified for government exemption programs that allow it to be a couple thousand Kg heavier so going electric increased its carry capacity by nearly 5000K instead of reducing it as you claimed in your video.
It is possible you did not know about this type of electric vehicle when you produced your previous video and it was not ignored due to bias. So I would really appreciate it if you could respond on this topic.
I think this is the future and when I retire in 8 years I fully intend to commission one. I am estimating the tech will be mature by then and will be one of your regularly offered options. But that will only be true if customers keep pushing the limits.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I am aware of Edison Motors and we had a chapter in the electric drive video that speaks about the type of hybrid with a smaller diesel engine, smaller battery pack and electric drive motors.

I am going to have to re-watch the video I referenced. If I missed such a large detail then it puts my entire line of questioning in a bad light and clearly explains why you wouldn't address it the last few times I brought it up. My deepest apologies for any aspersions I may have made.
Again, you make an amazing product. I just think it has the potential to become even more amazing in the next decade and I have some big dreams for the rig I wish to commission when I finally get my affairs in order.@@thomasritter1470

Excellent video that clarifies and teaches a lot.
Could you explain in a video like this the work of the double axle with steering turn on the 4 front wheels in an 8x8?

Hi Thomas, thank tou for this superb video. I am a big fan of the technical side of your project trucks. It is always great to learn something new.
I wanted to ask this: in your video you have used the 14.00R20 tyre size for calculatios. How would each of the duscussed turning circles change when used 16.00R20 tyres?
    Thanks

my question instead is this: since I was fascinated by your vehicle (Volvo 4x4) I wanted to have more information on how to convert a "normal" 4x4 with "fixed" wheels to 4 steering wheels without the hydraulic suspension system but above all where to find the correct axles .thanks

Interesting!! I like rear wheel steering!
But don't forget, with a big truck you need always more space like with a small truck!
If you pull a trailer is rear wheel steering much better!

Interesting topic from one of the best well reputed company. In a common 8x8x4 truck, Arocs or TGA, which has two axles at the front and two at the rear, to what extent adding a rear steering will improve the radius?

What about all axle stearing:6x6x6 or "4x4", is it possible? Useful? (could also reduce the rear departure angle...)
    And what about the reliability?

    Hi Thomas ..
    Previously .. I'd ask about 6×6×6 .. & you'd answered it can be done ..
Would really appreciated it if you can show it with the drawing layout & actual driving view as you shown in this 6×6×4 vehicle ..
Really want to see the actual results ..
    Thank you in advance

    • @thomasritter1470
      @thomasritter1470 10 місяців тому +3

Hi, we are currently working on 8x8x8 and 6x6x6 vehicles but the main advantage of all wheel steering is that you can go sideways as it's not really improving the turning circle any more on a 6x6x4 or 8x8x6. If you look at the drawings you can see, that with oversteering on the 6x6x4, the vehicle is not only touching the turning circle at the front end but also almost at the rear end. If you reduce the circle by steering all wheels, the vehicle will swing out of that circle at the rear.
What we are looking for is the best balance between turning circle, rear overhang and weight distribution. This is different on each vehicle and the one we have shown is just one sample.
On a 4x4, rear axle steering could help a lot as it does on my Volvo 4x4x4. On the drawing in the video, you can see that the rear end of the body is far away from touching the turning circle. But installing a steering axle on a 4x4 does not just mean to take a front axle and put it in the back. Imagine it would start steering by itself. On the Volvo, there is a hydraulic, spring loaded centering system as well as a mechanical blocking in the center position and I can activate it only at low speeds. Not so easy

@@thomasritter1470 ok then .. thanks for the details in your explanation / reply to my msg ..
      Now I really understood ..
I watched your Volvo truck .. 1 think quite a few times as to imagine how to apply the second floor area to (hopefully) my future 6×6 MAN TGS (as the MD 77 truck) .. which definitely will be done by your team .. if I'll be possible to get one

@@lansx42 There is a system belonging to Mobil Elektronik who have developed exactly what you are looking for. I will share with you two links in which you can see the steering capabilities of an 8x8x8 truck. This is the first link ua-cam.com/video/U-ujpvOeydk/v-deo.htmlsi=-8NJqizWDzf9eOpO. In the second link ua-cam.com/video/pSMFqhUE5-8/v-deo.html you will see the testing of UNiCAT with a 8x8x8 truck. It looks like that they are going to use the system of Mobil Elektronik as well.🙂 It is going to be an amazing truck. I look forward to see some official videos from UNICAT @thomasritter1470
