- Vintage Stanley Breast Drill Restoration
In Todays Video I have chosen to restore a Vintage Stanley Breast Drill
which was made from 1958 to 1993. It was finished in a grey Hammered
paint on the body and a black enamel on the gear casing with the Stanley
name running down the centre of the body. It was the most expensive
model in the hand and Breast Drill range.
I found this Drill laying in a bucket at my local reclamation yard and at first
glance it appeared to be complete apart from the make shift handle bar.
However after I started to break it down it became evident that there
was quite a few missing parts, ie some locking pins, bearings and washer
on the spindle and handle bar. Now I see why it was only £2.
Restoration Process
This Drill has had a rough life over the last few years and has been really
neglected. I have tried to use a few techniques to not only remove the
Rust but also prevent it coming back. I used a Bluein Gel on some of the
parts this time which cut down some of my work as I'm usually fighting of
flash rust all the time. I chose a Grey paint which I think is really close to the
original and contrasts very well with the Gloss Black. The ending was a slight disappointment due to resting the finished parts on top of the towel. There was obviously some residue from past projects which reacted with it but unfortunatley I had already applied one sticker. I will re order the stickers and remake the casing
If you have any questions regarding this project or maybe you could offer
some advice which I can use on future work I would appreciate your feed
Back.

Beautiful restoration mate. I really felt for you when the covers blistered. Whilst you were looking at the back cover blistering, I was thinking “what about the sticker side you just put it on”!
I have done similar respraying work that I accidentally dropped and chipped. It happens.
Hi Shed Man X, It was really frustrating after all that work but like you say it happens. I will respray them when I get some free time. Regards Brian

That carriage bolt in the drive handle made me smile, it meant the drill was used to the point of the handle …. Haft? Pin? Shaft? being worn away and the bolt substituted to get the drill operational again.
Hi ZenSpider40 yeh this was one of many issues with the Drill. Regards Brian
Beautiful job! Sucks about the dirty towel but great recovery😃👍🏼
Thanks David, yeh it was a bit disappointing but these things happen. Regards Brian

Hi Leahcim ressik the blueing gel can be bought from a few different companies online, just type it in to google. Regards Brian
Great resto I have one of these hand drills, do you have a link for the decals please, many thanks 😊
Hi Alesis I had the decals custom made, If you are in the UK you can contact a company called I Say Ding Dong, strange name eh. Regards Brian
@@UniqueRestorations yeah I'm in UK I'm in West Yorkshire bud looking forward to your next restoration 😊
An interesting drill, its a shame there was something on the towel that spoilt the shine, you could see all the hardwork that went into it, good job well done.
Hi Sarah yeh it was a bit frustrating but I should be able to repeat it easy enough. Regards Brian
super job were did you order the stickers.
Great restoration. Could acetone be the towel culprit? Can I ask where you got the Stanley stickers from?
Hi Costa, Acetone could be the likely cause. The towel is in the bin now. The stickers I had made from a company in the UK called I Say Ding Dong. Funny name eh. Regards Brian
@@UniqueRestorations I think maybe the towel was used to wipe up paint stripper in another project perhaps(?) Surely enough acetone to do that you would have smelled, no? Boy that's the definition of frustration, when after so much hard work and nearing perfection, something like that happens!
@@UniqueRestorations Thanks for the info.
Hi John I'm not exactly sure what was on the towel as I use alot of different chemicals, Acetone and Paint stripper among them. I was more annoyed that when I turned the drill over and saw the damage that I forgot about the cover I had just put a sticker on, now both were damaged. I can easily re spray them one the stickers arrive. Regards Brian
Hey mate, I don't know if you can get Hammerite paint where you are, but it gives a nice hammered effect. Good job on the restoration. 👍 👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks Cathy, I have used the hammerite paint a few times and it does give a nice finish and covers a few dimples here and there. Thanks for watching. Regards Brian
So, what is the blister stuff? :D
Hi Schnu, if you look closely when I turned the drill over the paint has blistered due to some chemical on the towel. Regards Brian
