- So since owning the 944 S2 the sunroof has never worked properly. I've fixed one before in my turbo but it was a long time ago! I know the commons failure points which mainly focus on the motors clutch mechanism tightening over the years causing problems for the plastic gears which then get stripped and not in the fun way. Replacemet brass cogs are available which are an obvious solution really. Not sure why they weren't used originally. Still I guess it is important to keep an eye on the motors cluch settings to make sure nothing is under undue strain. All in all it's a bit of a pain to sort out. The nearly 19 minute video you see simply does not reflect the whole huge amount of time that was actually spent trying to sort out this problem. However, I'm now happy to report that finally the finished line was reached and the problems are all resolved. We now have a working sunroof.

Thank you so much! I over cranked my manual closing at the motor and broke the plastic connector for the cable tube- The replacement part is over $100 USD and so I tried your tube/U-bolt fix. Simple, inexpensive and it worked right from the start! Many thanks as today is Drive your Porsche day 9/19/21 and Ferry Porsche's Birthday. I wanted to drive with sunroof working-so great help! Cheers-!
Glad it helped! Thank you for watching.
I broke the original cogs, got plastic ones then immediately destroyed those, brilliant video really easy to understand and you saved me alot of confusion
Yeh, its a fiddle to do a get right. Buy lots of plastics ones to help with the adjustment and know some will get ruined.
I can't thank you enough for this video. There is limited information for the fix for this sunroof. I installed the brass gears, and properly set the lifting arms with the proper position of the cam thanks to your video. That was always an issue when I've tried to fix this in the past. I could never find.any information on where the cam and lifting arms needed to be at the same time. Thanks again for clearing that up.
That's good to know. Bit of a scruffy flow to the video and filmed over a long period but pleased it helped you.
Thanks man, this video was the most helpful of all the info out there, I got it working perfect because of your detailed explanation, cant thank you enough! Subscribed!
Cheers Paul, that means a lot. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, this was really useful in helping me replace my sunroof gears!
Nice one. It's not easy or particularly fun but great once its done.
Just ordered my plastic cogs( took it all apart last night).... thought it would be an easy replacement of the stripped cogs... This talk of clutches and microswitches has got me nervous... Wish me luck...
Good luck. Take your time. Work through it logically and you’ll be fine. 🤞
Great job man, seems like quite a fiddly one this one. Brass cog solution on my corvette as well for the pop up headlights.
Ahh nice one. Yeh it’s a know weak area. Brass cogs may not be the perfect solution but it saves spending loads on plastic cogs that strip all the time.
Great video, love it. Mine will do nothing on accessories position, the ignition switch appears to work as wipers will work in that position. Tried swooping relays, will work in ign position..any tips? Micro switches are showing operation too.
Doesn't sound right, fuse maybe?
So, do they break?
They're brass, the point of failure is redirected to the mechanism so do this at your own risk...
What if sun roof doesn’t work on acc.. just works on the on position of the key.
sounds like an ignition switch issue possibly?
micro switch weren’t making contact….
What position should the arms be when adjusting the clutch motor
Not a great idea - they are plastic for a reason, if there is something wrong with the adjustment or mechanism the cogs are made from plastic so they can strip instead of causing damage to the rest of the mechanism or the motor. If the mechanism is adjusted correctly you should never have a problem with the gears stripping.
Fair point. It’s done now though. I’m not going in there again! 😆
Agreed - the plastic is a cheap sacrificial part.....
Yes it's a false good idea ;)
