Well, you guys voted for him, so in this extra-long Bleach character analysis we're taking a look at the ultimate underdog himself - Sado 'Chad' Yasutora! It's truly interesting taking a look back at how Chad has progressed as a character, in ways which are both good and bad. By the time we reach the final arc, it's a bit of a sad sight, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!

We finally took a deep-dive look at one of the main characters of the series! Apologies for a lack of uploads over the last week, but I've been quietly busying away on this behemoth. Been waiting for this one thanks! I'm curious if you think the Ichigo's friends should have been able to defeat Ginjos goons instead of the shinigami? I always thought it was weird Kubo said the lost agent arc was a story with more focus on Chad. But he never got a manga fight that arc(or any since really).
I like how you didn't include Kenpachi in the power gap analysis between Chad and Shunsui. 😂
It's because he can't be compared to anyone, except Yamamoto.
Favourite moment? Probably the one where he refuses to drink with Kyoraku and battles him, despite not having a chance against him.
My only real disappoint with Chad is, when they were in Hueco Mundo he kept saying something along the lines of “it feels like I belong here” and his powers really seemed like he was a Hollow like Ichigo.
What I would’ve appreciated is, due to the Spanish names in Hueco Mundo, that he develops a good relationship with Grimjow and the other remaining Hollows and is allowed to train there and really explore his power.
It really really feels like Chad is still missing part of his character development, he still feels incomplete as a fighter and as a character.
He was robbed during the Fullbring arc, my vato needs redemption
Yeah that moment where he and Orihime are talking about the fact that two humans can train peacefully in the middle of Hueco Mundo now feels like the start of something that never got the chance to take off.
When he said "It really feels like I belong here" I just took that to be a "dia de Los muertos" reference.
Agreed I was a little confused when they were like he’s a fullbringer because I felt the same way. Maybe kubo changed his mind for some reason.
If Chad doesn’t get a proper spotlight in hell arc I would get mad. This arc literally screams “Chad’s home.”

Chad final opponent in the series were sentient statues , the most generic and cliche type of fodder in fiction , Chad is probably one the most horribly treated characters by kubo .
Yeah, that's the problem with Bleach: too many characters in too few locations.
One Piece has way more characters, but they are way more spread out, both by time and geography.

@@prismaticc_abyss But OP developed all his main casts early on. That's why Oda can focus on whoever he wants currently and stay up to dozens of episodes without appearing a main char like Zoro. Kubo, on the other hand, simply threw in the trash the original main cast he had created (Ishida, Chad, Orihime, Rukia and even Kon) to clog up the cheap fanservice manga of "badass fanfavorite captains".

Chad got nerfed hard just before the Soul Society Arc. He was practically invincible, even credited by Ichigo, who was a Substitute Soul Reaper at the time, so his defense was considered to be insane. He had a steel beam fall on top of him from a tall building, and WALKED AWAY...
From the panel shown the beamed bend the thick metal beam hit a human back and bend. That's a tough human.
OK it's the obsessive nerd in me, but Lieutenants can shake the world by flexing and Captains outrun light with ease. A metal beam is garbage tier in Bleach. Something like MHA that'd be insane but not Bleach.
@@nahte123456 It's less impressive in retrospect, as Bleach quickly scaled past that sort of thing. At the time it was genuinely impressive imo.
@@nahte123456 Those are just generalizations thrown out by the author to World Build, even if it doesn't make sense.
Rukia states to Ichigo that only a special unit can handle the Menos Grande too, then without changing seats, she is able to kill one on her own.
Ichigo and Uryuu couldn't even manage to kill one together.
*Remember:* Chad survived attacks from the particularly strong hollow, Shrieker, even direct ones, as evidenced by the handprint on Chad's Back. Those attacks would have killed any normal person, but he mostly tanks them, taking only a little damage. He also rips apart a telephone pole and uses it as a Bat. You never see a Soul Reaper perform that level feat of strength.

I know it’s a long shot, but I would love to have chad get a new form or be a somewhat relevant character in the hell arc considering one of his powers is named after the devil

That's pure copium. He's going to be busy with his boxing career in Hell arc.
Chad is definitely someone to have by your side when things get ugly. His stoicism and hard hitting brawling makes him quite formidable, but his loyalty to friends and family give him a soft center that also adds to his determination. His and Ichigo's first meeting really set the tone and it would carry into their struggles be it against Shinigami, Arrancar or the nightmare of the TYBW. Glad he made it through.
Just put someone as strong as nnoitra in his way.
I think that's really the crux of it. Chad's importance to the story isn't actually in how hard he can hit something, but who he's hitting for and his loyalty and love for them. It is, essentially, what his grandfather was trying to instill in him at that young age.
I don't mind Chad being a comparatively ineffective fighter as the series goes on because fighting isn't really the point of his character despite how good he is at it, and by the time of TTYBW I think he finally understood that about himself.

Just imagine Tsukishima's sword couldn't cut Chad's skin, making him the best option to help ichigo in that arc.
That would be a interesting what if scenario

Stern Ritter can steal Bankais, Chad has a entire different thing. He could've had a major awesome part.
Maybe I'm miss remembering how this power works but tsukashimas thing is just inserting himself into the past. Chad could have simply gone "I'm sorry tsukashima but I have to trust Ichigo more than you" or something like that not breaking out of the power by being so close with ichigo that the interference couldnt bother him

Chad got Worf’ed. In Star Trek: The Next Generation he’s presented as this incredibly warrior so to show the new threats were really dangerous they beat the crap out of Worf. So, over time he no longer seems strong cause you see him get beat up every week.
Ouch. Yeah, sadly -- agreed.
They actually did a joke about this in the Abridged version of Bleach.
Maybe we’ll get a sequel series where Chad gets the same treatment Worf did In DS9.
Or maybe, hopefully, when they start doing the enemy again they’ll add in some scenes to give Chad something in the last arc

Weird comparison here, but Chad's journey throughout the series always reminded me of Ash's Torterra. Start their series with promise win and lose battles in equal capacity. New circumstance start putting them on a lose streak. Adapt to new circumstances to Win a battle and then get trounced in the same episode. And then never win again unless it's against fodder.

Chad beat up a hollow before he was even able to see it. He's an absolute chad.

Maybe his power will multiply seeing as his arm is of the devil. Maybe gains full body armor that is unmovable

@@Imperiusism Exactly and I wish he had full body armor like the fan art I'd pay whoever drew that to incorporate that into his full armoured unmovable form. Heck you can also add a element of Hell or Hellverse 🔋 power sprinkle especially with the Diablo or arm of the 😈 devil . Something like one of his other relatives or grandfather was attacked by ghoul or denizen of Hell.
So, all Chad really needed to not feel like such a disappointment was his power-ups spaced out better and some more heroic failures. At least for the Arrancar arc
Keep all his failures in Karakura Town
1) When fighting Demoura make bigger note of Chad's increased strength
2) Then we follow up on this with Gatenbainne. Chad can hit him hard, but is taking too much damage. Then he unlocks the full version of his right arm, tanking Gantenbainne's strongest attack and laying down a decisive counter, ending it.
3) Have Chad wander for a bit before meeting up with Nnoitra. Have him fight Tesla, pretty evenly, even though he's clearly showing signs of fatigue from the previous fight, before Nnoitra blind-sides him to end it. Nnoitra makes some comment about the only thing that saved him was that right arm.
4) Have Chad fight Yami and win. Chad's the only one able to tank a hit from Yami, but lacks the strength to deliver a final blow. Have him internally wrestling with the concept that he should only use his strength to defend, but sees Rukia and Renji getting wrecked. Finally, he decides that he can't just be the gentle giant, he has to be a devil too, unlocking his left arm and finishing off Yami with La Muerte. Also give the attack some knock-out level recoil damage, that way he has something to work on in the future.
Honestly having him one shot Demoura would've done wonders for his character

I have better idea (at least in my opinion for 4) While kenpachi and byakuga fight yami chad joins and acts as a shield from yami hits and at the end he unlocks his left arm and all that damage he took (so like many yami punches plus some ceros) he redirects it to yami.
That would’ve been great!
I think what solidified for me that Chad was goona lose his part in the story is when Nnoitra beat him. With Shunsui I could understand Chad being the Vegeta character for Shunsui because Chad was really strong and was taking out shinigami left and right while the others had to like run and hide when shinigami groups were around and so him getting taken out so easily by Shunsui shows how strong Shunsui is even in regards to other shinigami and that Ichigo's group isn't gonna be able to save Rukia easily. But with Nnoitra it feels completely unnecessary because the Espada are ranked. We don't need to see Nnoitra fight to show how strong he is because we know he is the 5th strongest Espada (you know before we find out Yammy is the secret 0th Espada). It really felt like Kubo had no idea what to do with him and had a repeat of the Shunsui encounter. But at least with Shunsui it was an enjoyable fight and in my opinion it was really unexpected however, with Nnoitra it wasn't even a fight. I can even forgive the Yammy and D Roy enounters because atleast then it felt like Kubo was setting up that Chad wasn't that strong anymore and so when he gets his upgrade it feels like a bigger win because we think now Chad has atleast shortened the gap but then Nnoitra just ruins that. I don't understand why they didn't do the Chad vs Nnoitra fight like they did the Uryu and Renji vs Szayelaporro fight where Chad would have a drawn out battle with Nnoitra where Chad forces Nnoitra to go into his Resurrección and then Kenpachi takes over for Chad. Sure it wouldn't save Chad but atleast it gives him a little more respect.
I guess he couldn't do it because it would be "boring" to have chad fight twice in a row in the same way
Or even if Nnoitra yeeted Chad over to Ichigo after he beats Grimmjow. Then a nerfed Ichigo and Chad get to fight Nnoitra until Kenpachi takes over.
I think Chad is gonna get his comeback in the assumed upcoming Hell arc, considering it's about hell, and he has the Left arm of the Devil. I wouldn't be surprised.
I hope so, he worked so hard to develop his abilities

Always liked Sado/Chad a lot, and I even vividly remember just how powerful he seemed during much of the Soul Society arc, absolutely mowing down hordes of fodder Shinigami and even one-shotting a third seat, before going down to one of the strongest Captains. It's a shame that it was basically all downhill from there, though I did really like his left arm's new form. Also, it was really sad that the Fullbring arc was kinda supposed to be "Chad's arc", and yet he barely accomplishes anything in it due to Tsukishima's machinations. It wasn't just Uryu that got short-changed in "his" arc...
He was supposed to be great in the arrancar arc especially in hueco mundo but was just a sacrificial lamb
Bleach had way too many characters, and Chad is unfortunately one of the ones that got left in the dustbin.
The problem wasn't realy the number of character but the fact that kubo kept focusing on those fan favorites captains that end up harming the story

Nobody helps ichigo in fights they usually just let him solo the bad guys, which is unfortunate for all his friend's relevance. On top of that, kubo has to tell us every other character's backstory, give them a named ability, have the Shinigami show up and win, and make sure ichigo is growing. R.I.P. ashido kano, you could have been canon but I will always rember 😭💯

A really interesting thing they could have shown ALONGSIDE Aizen's description about reiatsu and nullifying things. There could be a show of Chad just taking everything Yami throws at him.
For me, all of Ichigo's friends had a role to play in his development. Uryu, was there to force Ichigo to reason out the situation, Rukia was there to remind Ichigo of his responsibilities, Orihime is there to inspire Ichigo to greater hights of power. Chad's role to me was always to ground Ichigo, to remind Ichigo of who he is and remind him of why he fights. Chad is a constant link to the past and all Ichigo knows and loves. It's so sad that he is treated the way he is throughout the series being Ichigo's rock and all.
And tatsuki? Some one remember tatsuki... Did she even go to the wedding of ichigo e inoue

I always read Chad's ending as showing that he'd learned he didnt need to just protect anymore, that he could act for himself for once and that he didnt always have to be selfless and sacrificial. I dont think it terribly takes too much away from his character, its not like hes using it for criminal gain - everyone he fights would be fully consenting to the fight, and probably even looking forward to the challenge.
That's a totally fair read on it - I just find it strange that while they are consenting to the fight, do they really know what they're up against? Maybe they do haha
I doubt he is disclosing to his opponents that he is essentially a superhuman with supernatural abilities.

@@alexmikhylov I may be mistaken, but I remember it being a plotpoint that their human bodies are not inherently supernatural or enhanced - its only when they are in their soul forms or when they are actively manifesting their abilities that they have supernatural abilities.
My understanding is that their physical bodies still have the same limitations as any other human would. Albeit in Chad's case, he was freakishly strong even before gaining his abilities, but I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would consider being naturally born strong would constitute as "cheating".

I would have liked to see some of Ichigo/Chad's more honorable opponents see his potential & help to bring it out of him.
In many ways he seems to represent deep rage, suppressed to the point of stoicism. When he's introduced, he's lived a life where he's been ridiculed, belittled & bullied - all due to racism at his half Japanese/Half Mexican appearance (& to some degree, fear at his size/power by the bullies) - fulling him with tremendous rage. This deep anger is given a focus, a minute level of release, through the advice & training of his grandfather/Abuelo, but remains tremendously suppressed behind his gentle giant persona.
He himself fears what he might do, what he may become, should he ever release his inner rage, and he worries what this could do to his friends.
I'd expect someone like Grimmjow to see deep into his heart, recognising that he's been held back by his fears - taunting & mocking him with how pathetically he's had Ichigo's back, excoriating him with how powerful he should be - then systematically beating the shit out of him, again & again, until he finally cracks with an immense blast of Reitsu, that rocks the entirety of Hueco Mundo (making several prominent characters curious/alarmed).
Now things get interesting. Seeing him easily take out some bad guys who've basically one-shot more powerful Shinigami - that would be awesome. Reinforcing the original opinion of Chad as this impossibly resilient character (catching/bending heavy steel girders while standing still) - from way back early in the series. Hell, it would be awesome to see him & Kenpachi going at it, just for the hell of it - both grinning with joy.
As for the ending in the human world, having him as some kind of social worker for "troubled teens", maybe running an award winning gymn program which channels the violent impulses of angry kids into more productive, athletic goals. Now that would fit the honorable, protective, core identity which he displays again & again throughout the series.
Even just your ending for the character sounds much more fitting and it's a bit depressing haha

That depends. Have you ever been a RWBY fan? Because I’m doing a RWBY fanfic starring an OC who will be acting as my Ichigo with another OC who will be acting as my Chad playing a supporting, but still important role as the other OC’s childhood best friend. I wanna use a character arc like the one you mentioned for my OC who will be acting as my Chad.
It would've been cool and I wish Chad would've trained and come back with his full powers looking like a Vasto Lorde. Maybe not being as strong as uryu but relative to a captain. His only character development had to do with his grandpa or wtv and not much else. He could've been a really cool third like Sanji is in one piece

Ichigo - Leader
Ishida - Lancer
Orihime - Heart
Chad - Big Guy
Rukia - Smart Guy(can't fight but is the only one who knows about hollow stuff)
I think Ganju should be the smart guy too(bad at fighting, use tricks to overcome difficulties, during the Soul Society invasion is the only one besides Yoruichi who knows about the place)
The biggest problem of Chad is that the others continues with the roles (in some level) but Chad is not a "Big Guy" anymore, he suppose to win fights that Ichigo couldn't, to help with things that need strength but he never does that.
I think Rukia is more of Ichigo’s lancer than Ishida, especially in the beginning. Ishida is more of the Smart Guy than her.

I like to think of them as a D&D group.
Seeing Chad go down to Yammy at the end of the Fake Karakura was just sad. Yammy was considered a huge joke at that point and I seem to remember most people's reaction to the 0 espada at the time was thinking it was incredibly troll.
So Chad got put down by a joke that evolved into a troll who quickly turned back into a joke when Byakuya and Kenpachi turned up.

That moment where chad told shunsui that hes putting his life on the line because ichigo is is so hearrwarming i cant get enough of it

This is a fairly common issue in action series. For example, This is also exactly what happened to Krillin in dragonball Z. If you watch Original dragonball, Krillin was a much more important and relevant character in the series.
But as more powerful characters came along and you need it to seem like the protagonist is the only hope, it’s difficult to write the friend character to be as powerful and increasingly tempting to have that friend character hold an L in order to increase both the emotional and real world stakes of the arc.
Another common issue is rival characters (like vegeta for example) that by definition are kept up with the protagonist power level and eventually become the protagonists new best friend since they’re easier to write into situations with the protagonist, due to them being able to fight effectively with them against the main villains.
That is an unfortunate effect of a setting where power level/ fighting weight class hard limit characters
Just so i m not misunderstood i m not saying power level should not exist, nor that they are illogical
But one of their perverse effect is that they can easily help sidelines character who take a few losses
Since after all if they cannot even compete/Hope hurting ennemies, they can't participate too much which makes sidelining easy
It's not impossible to circumvent it either:you can have weaker character cooperate, or they can have a role that is not fighting, or there can be a reason why the stronger character cannot do everything (an easy way is to have multiple objectives that make it so the strongests can't be everywhere at once, or at least the weaker people have to stall.Another is separating them and make it so they have to survive on their own).
But for someone like Chad, who is the big guy and emotional support,He needs to be a force to be reckoned with, unlike horihime who can to an extent get away with being simply the healer)
Also if you allow weaker fighters to win with smarts it's also an option
I really hope that if Kubo continues the story in the hell arc, they reveal the origin of Chad's power being not just fullbring but also somehow connected with Hell, and that he could probably get a hell version power up in order to be in pair with the rest, that would be awesome

I think Chad finally felt pride in his fighting, and that's why he became a boxer... but this is me just trying to make sense.
When you look at how Kubo treated Chad throughout the series, the Vizards look way less pathetic lmao.
By the way, on Klub Outside, Kubo was asked a question regarding Chad's decision to become a pro boxer. Kubo answered that Chad sees boxing as nothing more than a martial art, so he isn't using his fists for violence or for selfish reasons, it's just a sport.
As for how he doesn't one-shot every opponent, my headcanon is that he had Kisuke make him a device that nullifies his spiritual pressure. Kisuke DID make Nel a device that allowed her to remain in her adult form, so I don't see why he wouldn't do something similar for Chad.
I was watching the Lost Agent arc in the anime for the first time recently and actually cried a bit over Chad talking about his pride in his skin. It's not something you see touched on in manga/anime and I thought that there was so much potential for his character. I am wishing in vain for him to have a bit of time to do something in the Hell arc!
I’m a bit late, I know. But Chad has an odd, very special place in my heart. I wouldn’t have gotten into Bleach without him! The very first exposure to bleach I had was from I believe the Bount arc, I saw this big badass guy in a Hawaiian shirt charging up a LASER BEAM from (what looked like) his rocket arm???
Child me was truly transfixed. And when I really got into the story later, I was super disappointed to see he wasn’t a super important, powerful guy. I literally dove into the wiki hoping, digging for more (this was right before the blood war started) and while his Diablo arm is amazing, he just feels so left out.
If I could write Bleach exactly how I wanted it, he’d have either gotten much stronger in the Fullbring arc and had a real, emotional fight with Ichigo. Or, had his weird connection with Hell fleshed out more, which I still hold out hope for with the upcoming story.
But no matter what, I love the guy. He’s big and strong and stoic, just like I’ve always wanted to be, and even as he falls behind in power he’s always there to support his friends. Chad has always been my favorite Bleach character, and always will be.
I never really looked at chad to be a “punching bag” that fact that most lieutenants couldn’t hang with a pre espada so for chad to beat one and to run into niotora which is the number 5 espada, I never expected him to win that. For me chad is right under captain level. I just think they missed in the fullbring/twbw i was expecting chad to get get a full “suit” like different colored leg hell even a mask.
Getting some body armor would’ve been dope. Would’ve been cool to see chad get a boost enough to scrap with a Quincy. Maybe not solo win his fight, but also not get easily tossed around like he didn’t work hard the whole series 😅

I like Chad.
The common take is that he's done dirty and given a more minimal role in the story, but I don't really feel that's the case. Yes, he doesn't become as strong as Ichigo or the Captains, but that's fine. Chad's just a human. It's wild that he was even able to become as powerful as he did.
I get that it's a battle manga and, often, a character's worth tends to get measured by fans in how many fights that character wins. For me, though, Chad's struggles of wanting to be at Ichigo's side despite the ever-growing disparity in their strength was the whole point of his story. The resolution is that Chad will still do what he can and stand by his friend in the ways he can, despite everything. His support transcends being just physical backup.
That's why I'm still a fan of the character even though he never really gets a win after the Hueco Mundo arc. It's less about Chad becoming strong enough to be Ichigo's peer in battle, but instead about Chad coming to terms with that change and, despite the overwhelming danger of it, continuing to stand by Ichigo.
As for the whole 'Chad became a famous boxer' angle, I tend to read that less as Chad turning his back on his whole ethos of only using his fists to protect. The way I see it, Chad's not using his fullbring in boxing matches--he's not using his fists for violence's sake. Instead, he's pursuing his own martial growth rather than relying on some supernatural power. It marks a development for the character--that he's not just in Ichigo's shadow, but able to strike out and pursue challenges of his own. It was also a cute inversion for the character--throughout the whole series, Chad is there as moral support, to back up Ichigo no matter what--so it's cool that all of Chad's friends are supporting him in his career and cheering him on.
While I would've liked it more had Chad been in a band or something that had a clearer callback to his hobbies that we saw in the manga (after all, it was Tatsuki that wanted to be the champion fighter!), it was still nice to see that Chad had developed a healthier relationship towards fighting and independent pursuits. I'd love to see Chad make a return in the Hell Arc, should it continue. I like the idea of him continuing to support Ichigo. Were I writing it, I'd have Chad display his newfound martial capabilities, showing that the techniques he's learned in the world of boxing have elevated him beyond just having a mere power-boost.
I think you make some great points. My counter argument would be that resolution for Chad, that realisation, can only carry the character so far. While I think him being nearly killed by Yammy is a bit of a stretch, I liked it, and I think the moment where he realises he might not be able to fight beside Ichigo anymore is extremely powerful. Like I mentioned in the video, it's a unique way of addressing the idea that the main character will inevitably be extremely powerful in comparison to his friends. Unfortunately for Chad though, it feels like Kubo is unsure of where to take him, and it leads to this back and forth that reaches almost parody levels. In my eyes, Chad never really comes to terms with it, that's the issue - he's constantly resolving to get stronger and not be a burden to Ichigo, only to continue to fail and be a burden to him. But that's just my take!

I didn't really read Chad as a burden in the TYBW, but, again, he's not really given much to do there. I definitely wish the character got at least little more focus and was allowed to shine more. There were moments in TYBW where it seemed like Ichigo and Co. were going to fight more as a group and that would've been a treat to see (there are small glimpses, like in 656 or 660--love the moment where Chad grabs Ichigo's sword to catch him) but Kubo had to wrap things up.
All in all, it's a testament to Kubo's work that he's able to create so many interesting characters. I'm loving that you're taking the time to feature these various side characters in videos because it's not all that common that manga have such evocative characters. As much as I love characters like Chad or Iba or Gin or Tousen and want to know more about them or see them featured more prominently within the work, at the end of the day it ends up not being a story about them, unfortunately. It's wild that Kubo was able to balance the roster of characters he did have.

I feel like the full bring was a missed opportunity to make humans able to compete in the story and be as strong as a lieutenant soul reaper (not every human but just the ones relevant to the story). I think captain level full bring should only be reserved for special or gifted humans (Ginjo was the only one who could compete with a captain/lieutenant. Everyone else didn’t really stance a chance in their fight except tsukishima). That would’ve made things more interesting. In an anime that’s all about fighting, your strength is a big part of your relevance to the story. Would you rather watch a whole arc about ichigo’s other friends that have no powers and are barely able to even see hollows? Chads strength could have really been expanded on in the Hueco Mundo arc or fullbring arc since his powers were related to the two. Instead he got the side character treatment. It felt like Chads story personally never developed past Hueco mundo. Nobody wants him to stand toe to toe with ichigo, we just wanted something more than the big guy that loves his friends.

Love Chad but I feel like the he loses alot of moments you'd think he would have are replaced with Renji or Uryu which is my one disagreement on who became Ichigos true best friend at least of the males. Honestly feels like it's Renji
I've always thought that the power scaling of all Ichigo's friends should have roughly stayed comparable, including Rukia and Renji, throughout the series. Sure there would be peaks and lows for all of them, but they should be kept around the same. So by the TYBW arc both Chad and Orihime should have been Captain level in their power, just like Rukia, Renji and Ishida were.
For the Lost Agent Arc, I think Chad should have been the one that had the final fight with Tsukishima. One, it would have shown his power growth as the whole arc has hyped Tsukishima up. Two, it would have highlighted that no matter how Tsukishima changed his past, Chad would always have Ichigo's back.
With the TYBW arc I am ok with them getting their but kicked at the beginning, along with everyone else to set the stakes. However I think by the time they come back at the end, both should have been at least on the level of Renji and Rukia, post royal palace. Each should have awakened new powers and abilities in their Huco Mundo training, that could then play some pivotal role in the final battle somehow. Perhaps give Chad a moment that mirrors his first meeting with Ichigo, where Chad protects him alone from overwhelming odds and wins. Maybe let Orihime fix Zangetsu by herself, paying off the comment that her powers encroach on the gods domain by them rejecting the will of a literal god. Each gets one good moment harkening to the past of the series, while showing how far they've come and that they're worth standing beside Ichigo.

For the amount of heart Kubo gave Chad, it just comes across as mean spirted the way he wrote those losses. I know it’s only a piece of fiction but it really bothers me how Kubo had his role play out. At the point where the fullbring arc exists theres not an excuse for it…
Kubo miss chance to evolve Chad Fullbring in lost agent arc, but anyway most fullbringers fall down compare to soul reapers and arrancars.

I wish chad was used more after the Arrancar arc. Another thing I wish happened was he along with Renji and Rukia defeat Yammy. Yammy defeated Chad in the beginning, so it is only fitting that he'd be given justice later in the Arrancar arc. In the Thousand Year Blood War, it would've been cool to see how strong he had become. Chad when I first read Bleach was one of my favourite characters. I related to him, because he is tall and quiet. In my high school years, I was mistaken for being older due to my height, but I wasn't annoyed with that. I was usually a quiet person also.
Sometimes you lose interest in characters, but still feel obligated to use them somehow. I can definitely relate to that.

Man, thank you for putting this since I had no idea why Chad got shafted so hard in this show when there were so many opportunities to clean up in fights.
That really just shows the limit of Fullbring and it would be impossible for him to withstand any captain ranked opponents. Unless there is a uniqueness in Chad's Fullbring, he cant ever be in the spotlight. In the end, even though Fullbring stems from parts of the Soul King, and some the powers provided is crazy, but they lack a strong body to fully wield it. In the end Chad is still just a Human.
Ginjo's explanation of Fullbring implies Chad's Fullbring hasn't reached it's final form.

Chad is the Krillin of Bleach. Sure he doesn't die several times, but he gets completely crushed.
Tragically he was the 1st full-bringer we see, and despite him getting 2-3 natural evolution(s) he doesn't seem to get the ability to scale the same as Rukia/Uryu/etc get.
Much the same as Krillin was Goku's best friend, but quickly gets left to the wayside when he gets to the Super Saiyin and beyond levels, the same happens with Chad and Ichigo. Chad is a mid-tier Full-bringer and that is where he stays; meanwhile Ichigo transcends shinigami/hollows/quincy, and even the soul king in evolution and power scaling.
I don’t think Chad should have been scaled to ichigos level, but he definitely needed something more than what he got. There was a missed opportunity to make full bringers interesting in the fact that some humans were special/gifted enough to have lieutenant or even captain level strength if they hone their skills enough. I never bought into the whole “humans were weak because they were humans” crap.

Man I just subscribed to the channel (a little late I know I’m sorry 😰) Chad has always been one of my favorites and when you brought the point up of him getting pushed out by Uryu was a “OH MY GOD YOU’RE RIGHT!!!” Moment to to an “oh my God you’re right 😢” moment.
I really wish he wasn’t a measurement stick towards the end, I felt he could have been so much more. I’m glad others felt that way and voted this episode. By far an unused talent and possibly an underestimated talent if only they allowed him to grow.

Honestly, I think this video helped make me realize why I kinda just coasted while reading Bleach after a while. Chad was my absolute favorite character since his introduction, and by the end of the series I felt more detached from the story. I think that is because the character that I most enjoyed and was easiest for me to put myself into was given the Worf treatment.
I genuinely struggle to recall some details from the Fullbringer arc to the end because by that point I was just coasting, which is a shame since in all these videos going over things the series seems like it remained interesting.
I might have to give the series a reread soon.
Whether fans liked it or not Chad was a main character and needed some character development, but it was to late , by the time the fullbringer arc came Chad had a really bad reputation and the gotei 13 were very popular to the point where fans viewed them as the main characters and them being absent from a arc and focusing on Chad is just unnaccetable .

This is one of your best videos. I think you have a great grasp on the character and have some wonderful ideas for what Kubo could have done with him. I still think he is a forgotten character because of how we was used then later not used. I really liked him too. However, he became a nobody really fast
I've always really loved Chad. As a writer i can somewhat sympathize with Kubo but at the same time it's kind of frustrating. Keep him as the amazing badass. From what we know of Chad he can easily be an unstoppable force but with no motivation to do so, which would be interesting in itself. Have him be reliable to us as the audience. We don't need to see him start with an army and never see him again, just cutting back to him in an army of dropped foes wondering how Ichigo's fight is going with a smile on his face would be enough to solidify him as a bonafied badass. I mean, him surrounded with execuas (pardon my spelling) or soldat (again, pardon) without breaking a sweat would be enough for him. The threat of not only being attacked by strong foes but noticed by their underlings and having to make sure to present them as a threat (in that way, not necessarily as a strength way) and have Chad carry the entire arc on his back by being the workhorse taking out entire armies of these enemy factions. He's already done it before in soul society! I know it's isn't realistic, but with Chad's devil arm I hope we get some development. Maybe the Hell Hollows activate his full suit fullbring like we all want? I don't think we saw his giant explosion of reiatsu that happens when fullbring is completed. I agree Tommo, it does seem like Kubo has just fallen out of favor with Chad. It's sad, but at least we can reminisce on one thing. He's the only Fullbringer to take out an arrancar, a feat that is probably beyond the capability of any other Fullbringer besides Ginjo. I mean, they get the stick pretty bad, especially when their power system is all weird abstract stuff that interacts with the world rather than combat.
Considering his left arm is called 'The Devil' I hope the hell arc does some insanely gnarly stuff with him. Bit of a stretch but whatever

And he is just as selfless as anyone and a genuine close friend who's going to have your back period. He is truly the badass. How unfortunate it is that Chad to be kind of riding the coattails of everybody else only to get beat up again. And never really given his do and the opportunity to truly shine. Like was Chad's power related to hallows in some way like he could of probably done major damage to the Quincy since were the hallows the counter to them like their spirt engery is posion to Quincys? So Chad could probably done some posion damage to them with a punch.

Oh hell no. No no no. After seeing Kyoraku's true nature when he back stabbed Stark there's no doubt in my mind that when he was offering to drink with Chad he was actually trying to lull him in to lowering his defense so he could sneak attack him.

Chad was a very interesting character at the start of the series. I overlooked him when I first saw the series many years back as I am not into brawler type of character. But re- watching the series now, there's so many things that can be done with him as a character and he is a very lovable one. But then again...

Here’s how Kubo could’ve fixed chad and made him a badass again. So we’ll start with the Lost Agent arc.
After Tsukishima corrupts the memories or Orihime and Chad, somehow they end up actually joining with Xcution and become corrupted even further when Ginjo shares Ichigo’s power with them, evolving their abilities. Because as fullbringers their powers are closer to Hollows it would work and make sense that it would evolve them and make them more useful and you can throw in some mind warp bullshit. Idk I’m just spitballing.
So Anyways Chad gets full body armor now and is vastly more powerful than ever before with Ichigo’s hollow powers in him. Orihime can actually fight now too and not just heal or reject shit so she’s infinitely more useful in a fight. They have bomb ass costumes now and this explains why Ichigo can’t use anymore of his hollow abilities like his mask nshit.
Then after this arc is over, they go train and upgrade these skills further and can ACTUALLY be of use in the final arc. Kubo just sucks at this shit and the more I watch all these video the more I realize how stupid bleach is at ALOT of character shit. Like to a baffling degree. I love it but I’m starting to also hate it the more I see how little he did with so many good characters he made.
This shit turned into DBZ and like how that went from the fighting show to the Saiyan only show, this became the Shinigami only show after the shinigami arc smh. It’s sad. I hate when writers do that. YuYu Hakusho is the only show I can think of where they didn’t do that shit. Niggas need to take notes and do better when they have an ensemble cast
Well said and I agree completely, though I would've had Chad fight at least one other Fullbringer (Jackie) and then he, along with Orihime, could've helped Ichigo take out Ginjo. I especially hate how Kubo just shoehorned the shinigami in when they had nothing to do with that arc.
Chad losing constantly didn’t mean that his character is dead. It is the way he loses all the time. I mean- if he slashed down by Nnoitra, but didn’t fall down immediately and stayed up for like 3 or 4 chapters while being slashed and slashed. Then you can have him as the character who isn’t as strong, but has strong resolve. He can’t win all the fights, but he will not stop fighting for his friends’ sake until his last brith. That would have made him a much cooler and relatable character
