What did you think of the battle between Kenpachi and Gremmy? Did Kenpachi's zanpakuto reveal live up to your expectations? How do you feel about the way the battle ended? Let me know!
7:52 Isane knew about unahona’s past life for a long time, as confirmed in a QnA booklet that came with the TYBW manga box set. It also states that Retsu only wears her hair untied when around Isane, since she knows about her scar. Definitely bring that up if you ever make an Isane video.
I didn’t like the end of this fight either. But hey, the ends of fights have to be goofy when you write yourself into a corner with busted abilities like this.
Well i was thinking that he needs to visualize the things that he want but you can’t imagine multiple thing at once and he got sliced in half so all he was thinking was oh shit im going too die so he couldn’t imagine anything else at that moment
There are very few true fans keeping the fire burning but I imagine we’ll see a lot of people coming out the wood works when the anime finally comes back.
I really like how, this fight is essentially Kenpachi fighting his younger self. Gremmy is a just a boy, but is one of the most powerful beings in the whole series. He is feared and seen as a monster, even by his own comrades and it is implied that even his leader was wary of his potential. Because he was so strong, he had become numb and depressed, until he finally met someone who allowed him to experience the thrill of battle. And finally, he lost that fight because he ended up crippeling himself and didn't even fully understand his own power. All of which, can be said of Kenpachi too. Which is why, this fight shows us that Kenny has truly matured and has started to become who he was meant to be, while Gremmy, who was unable to do so, dies and fades away. I really like how Kubo handled the themes of this fight. Even if you have the greatest power there is, it means nothing if you do not know and understand yourself. Which is very in line with the core themes of Bleach.
well technically gremmy isn't fully that of young zaraki cause gremmy doesn't like fighting he actually want to become a baker rather than a mindless sword fighting monster that was that of zaraki
Wow I never saw it that way. Awesome explanation and I agree I wish the ending to the fight had been much better. It’s interesting how gremmy also feels fear near the end and ends up killing himself similar to how young kenpachi felt fear and subconsciously suppressed his power which resulted in his loss against unohana
nah thats a big ass reach. kenpachi held HIMSELF back in order to enjoy his fights whereas gremmy is literally locked away by juha. because he is too strong even juha is afraid no where near the same
This was such a fun fight: A powered-up Zaraki Kenpachi facing off against one of the most insane hax abilities in Bleach history, maybe even Shonen history. The ending might have been a bit of an anti-climax, but it still kinda seemed fitting, and the whole fight was just so enjoyable, especially Zaraki one-shotting that colossal meteor!
Gremmy is such a layered character! This video shows a different perspective and also very good! I've watched today. ua-cam.com/video/Slzpc4UbnpE/v-deo.html
The choreography of this battles was so good that i have just one sentence for it! “The power of imagination VS. Power that can’t be Imagined “ Though the action in these chapters was so overwhelming that I didn’t even noticed the problems or the pacing. 😅
Gremmy is such a layered character! This video shows a different perspective and also very good! I've watched today. ua-cam.com/video/Slzpc4UbnpE/v-deo.html
I thought Gremmy was representative of Kubo himself, and the toil of always one-upping your own artistic imagination has on the body. Gremmy's body was tearing itself apart; Kubo was in bad health and being pushed past his limits by the studio.... Gremmy's fighting this monster of a shinigami; Kubo's fighting to finish this monster of a manga.... I liked it!
I can imagine this being the only time somebody else stoles Ichigo's theme. They already did fun things with Number One emphasising great moments, like Aizen just cutting it silent. Just imagine Chokkaku (Number One rock remix from Hell Verse Movie OST) riffing it up same as on Dangai Ichigo entry.
@@janosd4nuke nah just wouldnt feel as good as ichigo I imagine that theme being used for when ichigo first shows up against yjwach to protect soul society It being used for kenpachi just doesnt work
@@animeato7865 Well, subtlety is key IMO. Of course it's Ichigo's theme, and wouldn't fit Kenpachi from the point you notice it is Number One. But just a 3-5 second que from the start could work wonders for that moment as well. As on Ichigo's first meeting with Yhwach, that's too dire of a scene, I don't think it would fit, as Ichigo arrived too late there.
@@janosd4nuke i think imo it eould fit the ichigo yhwach scene Like just picture ichigos face coming out of the lightning and hes ready to kick some ass and the theme starts playing Ichigo lands on the battlefueld in front of yjwach and haschwalth and the episode ends
Really as long as they get everything with zaraki's development in this arch right I'll be happy. His is my favorite part of the arch and one of my favorite in the series.
It makes sense for his "imagination" to be limited because he has been locked in a cage without being exposed to the world. Basically his imagination is growing as he fights kenpachi, that would explain why they kept this guy locked up. By doing so they locked up his imagination so he wouldn't be able to imagine such grand destruction 🤷🏽♂️ love the breakdowns though man you are by far one of my favorite channels to watch bud!
Its also because Kenpachis spiritual pressure was high enough to beat Gremmy and overcome his imagination. This fight is one of the best instances of power scaling because in the beginning of Bleach if you dont have enough spiritual pressure and are so much lower than other people you wont be able to cut them or your abilities will not work if someone is astronomically above you, hence why Gremmys imagination/spiritual pressure just didnt wipe Kenpachi out. Kenpachi is in the happy medium of being more powerful but also being able to get damaged. Kenpachi also gets stronger in near death states and that boosts him even more so Gremmy couldn’t imagine a Kenpachi at Kenpachis level because his spiritual pressure is not on the level of Kenpachi, he is limited by his spiritual pressure. The scaling is so consistent in Bleach just like how Soi Fons shikai couldnt do anything to Aizen because he was so much powerful than her. As Aizen says a battle between Shinigami is a battle of spiritual pressure. If the characters are closer to each other than they can use strategy and tactics like most fights in Bleach but there comes a point when a character can be so much stronger than another. It makes sense for these supernatural beings to be this way.
Imagine (yes) if he imagines a bunch of bunch of nuclear/hydrogen bombs. Or a super nova. Or a black hole. I don't know what could be more powerful than that
I think to a degree his death involved his constant imagining of him being human. He maintained focus to keep his form as it was pointed out, and I feel he almost capped his own imagination inadvertently toward his physical existence.
Yup, exactly this. Gremmy tied his consciousness to the body he imagined, which is the reason he was even able to die from something that didn't hit his real body.
@@55thstreet66 Arrogance born of ignorance. How else would you deal with such hax abilities without totally obliterating stakes and consistency. Balancing it with well constructed character flaws is the only reasonable path. Everyone's greatest enemy is their own limiting beliefs, and that's exponentially more demonstratable through a character focused that much on imagination.
@@janosd4nuke no just no. He deadass said let me kill myself lol. That was an ass pull. People call gremmy stupid when he literally did the most creative thing possible literally making clones who also have the ability lmao. Kubo knew he wrote himself into a wall and needed to get rid of gremmy ASAP. Can't have 2 major villains.
I have a theory about why Gremmy died after his body was destroyed: Yhwach absorbs the power of every fallen sternritter upon their death, so the same was likely happening to Gremmy after his body ruptured. It’s almost like a metaphorical contract with their leader; if you fall, I take your power. So even if Gremmy could’ve made himself another body, he was already physically defeated once. There’s no second chances with Yhwach. If you fall, your power is his, which would prevent Gremmy from making himself a new body after being beaten. Idk, just a theory.
I honestly always just chalked it up to he couldn't because once his body ruptured he couldn't focus long enough to make it in time before he erased himself from existence.
Gremmy gleefully escalating before losing it and literally destroying himself was quite the symbolism of the similarities yet contrasts between him and Zaraki. Zaraki will go all out yet will stop when things get boring, while Gremmy gets just as excited yet clearly was out of his element even with his reality breaking power. Quite the trippy fight and the meteor was just epic.
This is pretty much the one fight in the war that people call asspull that I don't agree with. It's a thematically appropriate ending, that also made sense given the character's own faults. Honestly I think this might be one of the best overall fights in Bleach.
I have a great 20/20 hindsight appreciation for this fight. Especially after the Zaraki bankai release where Zaraki literally tears his own arm off trying to swing his sword in bankai, gemmy destroying himself by trying to make himself q physically stronger monster than Zaraki makes all the sense
When he multiplied and mentioned how his imagination had also doubled I felt like he was referring to the amount of things he can focus on at a time. For example, one could focus on healing while the other one could focus on attacking Kenpachi as this happened after Kenpachi pointed out how he took a bit to heal himself and that the effect of his powers fade if he loses focus on the subject of them like with Yachiru. About his death I felt like after realizing he fucked up his body with his last thought he just gave up. He mentally blanked out, he was stressed, he didn't care anymore, he stopped trying, he just wanted this to be over as he didn't want to deal with Kenpachi for any longer. I think ending it like this portrayed very well how overwhelmingly strong Kenpachi had become.
I always felt like Gremmy died because his idea of Kenny's power was so monstrous that deep down he felt scared of it. Not only that, but also the thought of there being someone that powerful with only their raw strength alone most have just made him crack under the pressure of assuming a stronger form of Kenny.
I think Zaraki is doing to Gremmy in a way what Unohana did to Zaraki. He is bringing out something which is suppressed within Gremmy akin to what Unohana did to Zaraki.
Nah its just the mangaka getting rid of a character he shouldn't have introduced. Literally gave him a looney tunes ability to just kill him off because he imagined himself dying lmao.
Gremmy is such a layered character! This video shows a different perspective and also very good! I've watched today. ua-cam.com/video/Slzpc4UbnpE/v-deo.html
I like the ending because I understand what Kubo wanted to do ( I think): in Gremmy's mind, throughout the fight, Zaraki grew from a simple shinigami, to the strongest shinigami, to a monster and in the end he saw him as an invincible monster, someone nobody could ever defeat. When he tried to imagine himself as better than him, he basically imagined something impossible in his mind. Hence he killed himself. If I had to do it differently, I would have done it so that Gremmy accidentally imagined his own demise like he nearly did at some point mid-fight.
people don't give this arc credit. It's fantastic to me (for the most part). OG fans didn't like it because the short fights and random unsanctimonious deaths but i liked it because it was more like a war, a brutal unfair one. If it's fleshed out in the anime, it'll be a masterpiece.
@@TheSwordfish009 fans dont like it because it is very evident area were cut development and character representation wasnt done. Some fights were cut too. Everyone loves how it began, a war and death by the head commander means the the Gotei were in chaos. We finally see Gotei loose and the sternriters as a real threat. So no that wasnt what the fan didnt appreciate.
Can I just mention how much I love Zaraki's design in the TYBW? The long and rugged mane works so well for him. I really don't like his clown hair in SC and HM arcs...
Gremmy has always reminded me of a version of what Yukio could have been on a much greater scale. Their characters are similar to me for some reason and I can't put my finger on it. Great video Tommo! Keep up the great content
I like how the two opponents that called themselves "the strongest" ended up losing to their own inexperience/ lack of understanding of their own power. I think Kubo used both Gremmy and Yammy to get across this idea that having immense power and broken abilities means nothing if you can't use them properly. Even though I believe Yammy was the most powerful espada, I don't see him winning against most of the other ones simply because he can't use his power effectively. Ulquiorra criticizes him for this numerous times, and he ends up getting off-screened. Same thing with Gremmy, he has one of the most broken abilities to date, but his lack of fighting experience gets the better of him. Kenpachi was the perfect match up for both of these characters imo.
Imagination is limited... you can only imagine things within the constrains of what you know / experienced. Even if you can imagine the most exotic otherworldly things they are still tied to your experiences / observations. Great analysis, brought back some good memories. Can't wait for the animated version of this arc coming soon (which I never, ever thought would happen).
Gremmy's death makes perfect sense. For quincies defeat meant death: either by the enemy or by Yhwach. Gremmy could not imagine any way to defeat Kenpachi. He could not imagine victory, thus he imagined defeat. And he lost, because he ran out of "imagination", meaning that he ran out of way he could imagine winning which by default left him with only way he could saw the fight ending. Gremmy could not imagine winning, thus he accepted defeat and accepted death. It makes perfect sense.

Despite how people feel about the ending of this fight, I've always thought it was almost perfect. The fact that Gremmy had imagined himself being stronger than Zaraki and being denied by the fact that, no, you can't even imagine a world where you're stronger than Zaraki, was beyond godlike.
@@scottgrasser9475 Gremmy puts Gerald Valkrie in a space void and tell me Gerald can cut through space as Nozarashi did and you're just full of headcanon theories. Gerald dies in space.
It's crazy to think, that without the power up that Kenpachi got with that training and unlocking true shikai/bankai, he would've been one shotted by Gremmy, even if he were using two hands and didn't have his eyepatch on, Gremmy was just THAT op.
@@mastixencounter na, that would definitely be Kenpachi or Ulqiora for me, though at least Kenpachi was a war potential, but some people do think he can't be beat, which is whack.
@@ronaldthomas8451 I agree with that as well. People definitely overestimate Ulq. But I think people are more reasonable with kenpachi though. Yes everybody agrees he's a freak of nature but the fight with pernida proves he can't win every single match up
@@mastixencounter Gremmy's power is quite frankly *not* overestimated. Everyone agrees that Gerard and Lille would bully him, Hell, As Nodt and Askin would bully him, since The Fear and the Deathdealing would stop Gremmy from thinking. Kenpachi, if not for the boost he got from Unohana's battle, would likely have died to Gremmy, as in the actual fight, Gremmy put Kenpachi near-death (Kenpachi immediately collapsed and became immobile after the fight. There is no interpretation, Gremmy did damage him that much), because remember, Unohana killed Kenpachi a thousand times, if not thousANDS of times, to consantly make him stronger and stronger and more and more skilled. On that note, Unohana would likely also beat Gremmy, as would Yamamoto and, given he has such a similar power that might override The Visionary, Shunsui.
I've been looking forward to this since you made that poll and mentioned the results in the kenpachi v unohana video. I'm happy to hear your take on it!
Maybe simpliest answer: when Kenpachi said that "your body couldn't handle it". Gremmy, just for a second imagined, he won't be able to handle it at all... and as he imagined it, it happened and his body fully collapsed...
I feel like when gremmy imagined having kenpachis power he imagined it having it as a whole and at its highest and strongest which is why his body started to tear apart cause if u remember when zaraki went bankai and yachuri released a bit to much power it tore off his arm and that wasn't even releasing his power at full so if a portion of his power can tear off his arm easily then someone body like gremmy definitely can't withstand that power and resulted with his body tearing apart since he's imagination is imagining things as a whole rather than a portion of it Just like when he put zaraki in space he opened a portal to where u can see 3 universes rather than spawning him hovering over earth That's what I thought of it

@@mastixencounter Understandable, but it is still a lame way to end a fight. They did the same thing in To Aru Magical Index, and I didn't like it then either.
If you have heard of Kenpachi, you cannot imagine him as weak. Gremmy can’t imagine Kenpachi dying or becoming weak, and that was his mistake by failing during these first couple attempts. Now he has to kill Kenpachi as a consequence of something else he’s made. There are things you can and cannot imagine and imagination isn’t 100% under a person’s control. That’s why he almost died earlier because he thought Kenpachi was going to kill him.
The one other of your videos I tried to watch, I was critical of some background music you had going, that had some screeching sounds the ultimately caused me to click off it, despite enjoying almost everything else about the video up to the that point. "There's nothing my sword can't cut." Planting that thought in Gremmy's head by saying it numerous times and proving it in battle simultaneously forced Gremmy's imagination into submission on whether or not that's true....is what I thought of while watching this analysis but as was noted Kenpachi was able to exploit the gaps in Gremmy's concentration to cut him. Once he concentrates, kenpachi couldn't get past his hardening ability. Great fight and greater vid.
Got to the end. Didn't imagine you'd have such an amazing analysis of this battle and Gremmy also! Wow wow wow! Best analysis yet. Can't wait for the next.
I think the thing that everyone misses is that gremmy was so sheltered that his imagination wasn’t very well developed and ultimately lost him the fight

When you mentioned unohana in this video, i imagined an awesome "what if" scenario. What if during the soul society arc, Ichigo ran into Unohana, the true kenpachi, instead of zeraki? Would ichigo make it out alive?
I'm very glad you make your videos, especially in the long form format so that I can get as much information as I didn't know I needed whilst I'm reviewing on my years old knowledge for the upcoming TYBW reboot. Keep up the much appreciated work
I feel like though one's imagination is limitless but it is also limited on your understanding and knowledge of the world around you. The fact he was locked away for some time makes me think that had he been free to experience more things in life and gain more knowledge of the world he would be a lot more creative and more powerful than he was. I also think that he may be limited in what he can imagine into existence on his own due to the amount of reiatsu he has and so having multiple versions of himself he is able to imagine more into reality due to having potentially more reiatsu or it's just the two heads are better than one scenario. And the reason Kenpachi wasn't killed by his abilities is probably due to Kenpachi having higher reiatsu to be able to at least mitigate some of the damage. I think in terms of his death it's possible the self doubt really got to him and he accidentally imagined himself dying at the end and ironically his imagination killed him.
Meh, I know time restraints are a thing and all that, but I would have loved to see Gremmy's reason for dying like this expanded upon a bit more. We already have strong setup why Gremmy would view existence as a pain: Shunned by everyone, locked in a prison like some kind of monster, has to control his thoughts permanently, cant even take a second to reflect upon his life without his imagination possibly killing friends and foe and himself.
Gremmy imagined himself dying. He imagined having more power than he could see himself living with. I think that while he is only limited by his imagination, he does not have all that much. Being kept in a cage was to prevent him from going against the Wandenreich but the lack of stimulation limited his imagination. By the time he was fighting Kenpachi evenly, Zaraki had figured his reaction speed. Not to mention that having to keep his mind of his own death and defeat while trying to figure out the path to victory must have been taxing on him which is why he failed at the end.
I think that gremmy's shrift is limited by his reiatsu so doubling the gremmy=double the spirit which equals double the reiatsu allowing him to summon the meteor
@@RealLifeIronMan he would need to be able grasp how much reiatsu that is for example you definitely can't grasp the size of the universe it is similar to that he just doesn't understand what 1000 times reiatsu would be like

The more and more times I think this man has nothing more to talk about it with bleach he just continues to surprise me and keep me coming back ❤️🔥 keep up the Good work man I love it! 👏🏽
I never had a problem with the Gremmy-Zaraki fight because it's so metaphorically powerful. Before the Unohana fight Zaraki was limited by his own imagination of an entertaining fight. Gremmy was limited by his imagination. Imagination was the downfall of both, before Zaraki rose above it. That's exemplified by both this fight and his fight with Gerard. Can you imagine a pre-Unohana Zaraki unleashing enough power to end a fight so extreme he hurts himself? That's pretty extreme character growth
I think you answered your own question about how he does. I like how the fight ends. He imagines Zaraki is a being too powerful for him to surmount and it becomes obvious when his body can’t contain the power to beat him. He imagined Zaraki was limitless and therefore limiting himself subconsciously. When his body breaks down he very well could of healed himself, however he had already accepted that Zaraki had won and it was the nail in his coffin. The whole “don’t imagine yourself losing” was the entire point of his downfall. He imagined and unbeatable enemy and by doing so made himself weaker than zaraki. Then he imagines a place where he has no consciousness which is essentially him imagining his death. I think this fight is like a boulder rolling down a hill. Gremmy doesn’t realize in the moment that he’s setting himself up for failure until he already does imagine he lost. I loved the video otherwise. I just think that it was always the theme of the fight that gremmy would be his own undoing, much like how zaraki’s need for an interesting fight has almost led to his death before. Zaraki is breaking his limits through his fight with Unohana and gremmy whereas gremmy believed he was limitless and subconsciously limited himself in the end.
Everyone NOTE that Gremmy literally stated that the reason why he died wasnt because his imagination wasn't at its fullest potential. He stated his imagination was near perfect. It's the fact that when he imagined himself a monster like Kenpachi and his body exploded was all because of how insanely powerful Kenpachi is. He stated my imagination was near perfect, it's that your body is the ONLY, I repeat, ONLY, body capable of containing that much amount of power. Meaning, Gremmy with his imagination couldn't fathom the amount of power that resides inside Kenpachi and Kenpachi has more power inside himself than anyone in the series.

@@scottgrasser9475 Really? Because I remember Kenpachi beating himself when his own body couldn't handle the little amount of power Yachiru gave him that's why his arm tore itself. I think a big contributing factor to Gremmy's death is on a psychological front. With his power he probably has to be so careful like you mentioned. But consider that if he gets surprised and stops thinking about things or say goes into shock from feeling all of his muscles rip apart, that would have a huge effect on his whole existence! It was great to see this analysis and it came out good. I always really liked this fight, easily in my top 3 for the arc!
I personally always thought Gremmy either over did it and gave himself a stroke or he ran himself to ragged and tired himself out to the point he couldn't heal himself. Think on it he was huffing and puffing from opening space and blowing kenpachi up then he tried to make himself as strong as kenpachi. I would have a headache after trying so many ways to stop kenpachi and none of them working.
@@40kconquest10 His power was visibly straining him, so there is no way he could do it infinitely, I imagine even summoning more and more clones would only make it worse since none of them were dropping extra brain jars, all that stress was being heaped on the original

Gremmy and kenpachi are in my top 10 favorite characters. This fight I wanted you to cover Great video. Thank you, I needed this. Top 5 fight imo. Fight of finding your own path
Gremmy lost because of his inexperience. Gremmy is someone who was locked up for his entire existence as far as we are told, never experiencing the elation of a fight until the meeting with Zaraki. This makes him extremely vulnerable and we even see that when he almost imagines himself losing, although to be fair, his opponent was the physically strongest and most "savage" captain. I believe that's the reason he sees Zaraki as a monster and, ironically, by doing this he unintentionally boosts him to ridiculous levels to the point that Zaraki survives the vacuum of space. By that point Gremmy had already lost as he most likely saw his opponent as something so unimaginably strong, that he couldn't imagine himself handling that power.
48:15 being respectful with this opinion: Martial artists (white/yellow belts) train and imagine how to beat their master whose a black belt. Regularly imagination/plans die immediately once a more experienced person spars against us. Zaraki is just that Demon level black belt. Eventually you have to ask yourself what can you do when the vacuum of space failed, a meteor failed, duplication of self failed, defense failed. It makes sense Remy lost even if he didn't give up. You can only imagine so many things in an actual battle before you have to pause and that moment of pause was fatal for Remy power
I hope when they bring gremmy to the anime, that they’ll give us the scene with liltotto and gremmy, like maybe have gremmy try and protect her when he gets the meteor to come down
This entire fight was amazing tbh. After rereading this a second time around, I see that both Gremmy and Zaraki are sort of teaching each other. Beautiful.
I always... imagined... that Gremmy accidentally imagined that "this mf just built different" and had that idea in the back of his mind the whole fight. And the moment Gremmy subconsciously internalized that idea, he was simply never able to win the battle.
the stuff coming out of Zaraki in space is just his gases on the inside of his body being forced to the outside because of the difference in pressure, so basically his lungs and stomach/other organs are collapsing as the gases are forced out of them
I actually like how he ended the fight. At least the part of him imagining himself stronger than Kenpachi and not realizing the strength of his body. No one should be able to beat Gremmy with that power but he doesn't know how to fight and was taught by Kenpa, so attempting to match his physical was his downfall.
I think Gremmy's limits are done subconsciously. Having limitless possibility actually prevents you from doing anything (analysis paralysis). So, he limited himself for his sanity. That's my take on it.
I think that the shutstaffel reveal kinda super undercut Gremmy in particular- because after it was revealed he wasn’t strong enough to be a part of that crew it really made me wonder if any of the sternritter who weren’t in that group were a real threat
The only Gotei Shinigami who were on the Elite Guard level were Kenpachi, Byakuya, Toshiro, Kyoraku, Mayuri, and Nemu. Kenpachi and Byakuya needed special training, Toshiro had a hidden power that he had been working on all timeskip, Nemu has a special suicide mode one use function, Mayuri altered his Bankai artificially to adapt to any scenario and opponent....the only one you could say was on that level the whole time was Kyoraku and Hitsugaya. None of the other Gotei Shinigami were at Gremmy level. Even Unohana was at best = or weaker than Base Kenpachi, yet he needed Shikai for Gremmy
It wasn't that he wasn't strong enough, he was already dead. Yhwach chose who'd be brought up as part of the Schutzstaffel in the moment, and the only people left that Yhwach decided were qualified were Lille, Gerard, Pernida, Askin, Haschwalth, Uryu, and Sternritter W. Haschwalth actually says later on that he was surprised Bazz-B wasn't among the chosen.
Holy cow I love this fight! I remember at the time of the manga release Tekking101 made a video of he would've changed from the fight and thought it was good
I think the interesting theme of this battle was imagination vs reality. Gremmy could grasp Kenpachi’s power but loses because the reality he runs into is that only Zaraki’s body is physically capable of containing the power he holds. The nuance in the conclusion is that gremmy comes to understand his imagination can’t hold up to the reality before him. We saw earlier in the fight that he can be overwhelmed when he was no longer able to affect Yachiru once Kenpachi started swinging. It stands to reason that when his whole mind was dedicated towards pushing his power to overcome kenpachi’s he no longer had the capacity to dedicate towards creating a body also comparable to kenpachi’s
I think he means by having two of himself, the other “imagination/consciousness ” would be able to heal and handle the other without being in direct danger.
The issue is that Gremmy caps his own limits. Imagination is infinite and having to quantify himself shows he doesn’t comprehend his own power. If he had full understanding he wouldn’t need to make a clone because he’s subconsciously giving himself a weakness. If he saw himself as invincible he wouldn’t be facing adversity, he simply would have (if anything) wiped out the entire universe without even coming into contact with anyone.
@@24KLuxury I would dare say that it's not Gremmy actually capping his ability, its a bit more abstract : using the ability actually caps itsellf. To explain my point of view : Philosophically speaking, imagination is NOT limitless. You can only imagine so much ( at least accurately) it's limited to what experienced through senses. You can make alot of combinations of those representaitions tho, but those are numbered. Second point would be that the manifestation ability seemed to require focus on his part. That ability to focus is also limited, as intelligent he might be, being aware of everything at all times and thinking of it on the spot would require an unsustainable amount of energy ( if not infinite).
The way I feel about gremmy's death is kinda like how Kars from JoJos just stopped thinking when he got sent to space. Like the power and amount of imagination that gremmy had to think and experience to fight KENPACHI made him go mad and not want to ever imagine again because he is afraid of it.
@@SuperCrysis92 People are starting to recognize that Gremmy was truly the strongest and even more powerful than the Elite guard. I actually had to prove to a commenter that Gremmy could literally kill all the Sternritters with his space trap. All Quincies absorb reishi from the atmosphere and their surroundings to fuel their abilities(ch.49 pg.3). In space there is no atmosphere and no reishi thus leaving all Quincies no abilities or haxes. I'm surprised nobody caught on to it.
Kubo ran into one of the most difficult writing holes in existence. Absolute plot armor vs absolute plot armor. The only options were draw, double knockout or one side commit suicide. There is no way to win this fight a satisfactory way. That just how broken and power scaled both characters are. Absolute imagination and we still haven’t seen bankai. Does not make sense. I can’t imagine any writer being satisfied with this fight. There isn’t a good way to write this battle. I would not use absolute imagine unless it is the final boss or final arc and bleach keeps going after Quincy arc. He could have made himself a deity. I don’t even understand the point of invasion when could have imagined access to the soul king. So this fight was a mistake and then Training a guy who commits suicide and just accepts vs instant heal is weird to me. Who summons one meteor. He could have dumped whole meteor shower while multi casting 1000 other spells. What I don’t get is why Gremmy wasn’t part of small invasion group of soul king territory. I feel like he should have or could have soloed the reaper royal guard
Was looking forward to this breakdown. Gremmy's effect seemingly is something that in the end still targets him. He has to be the target. Even the meteor targeted in. His limit is the field of reach where there's interaction with him.
Honestly it's pretty interesting that one of the strongest Soul Reapers is the pinnacle of overwhelming might, while one of the strongest Sternritter is pinnacle of adapting.
Gremmy is such a layered character! This video shows a different perspective and also very good! I've watched today. ua-cam.com/video/Slzpc4UbnpE/v-deo.html
Kubo had a bad habit in this arc of showing long awaited powers in just a single chapter. It wasn't just Nozarashi. Look at Unohana's Bankai, Urahara's Bankai, Shunsui's Bankai, and even something like Komamura's new power when he becomes human. Imagine if he treated all of these things similarly to how he treated Yamamoto's Bankai.
I took Gremi's death as the breakdown of his person, this is the first time he is really allowed to be himself. When he starts to break out of his shell, Kenpachi, I assume, relates with him, coming back to challenging himself with others instead of holding back. Kenpachi here is trying to challenge his strength while Gremi challenges the limits of his imagination. A couple of times he drifts dangerously close to his own death because he loses sight of himself. The moment he chose to imitate the strength of Kenpachi is when he lost because not only did that mean he reached the limits of his imagination, he also gave up himself to be like someone else. His body starts to break down from the overwhelming strength because in the end, he couldn't imagine to be anything else than what he is as he dies, which is a brain. And the pacing of the fight I suppose is meant to match Kenpachi's dissatisfaction, finding a strong opponent to test his power on, just for him to defeat himself. But not also match Kenpachi's disappointment, its supposed to reveal he has moved passed his own limitations with the fights he had with Ounahana. I also think that this shows how Gremi's lack of interaction limited his imagination, leaving him with a young mind set, lacking experience and self reflection. If he was ever able to match Kenpachi, it would have been after having been able to form a strong idea of who he is to himself in reference to others, much like our personalities grow stronger with bonds and interactions. This is why I thought this was a great fight, jammed packed with hints into the limits of what everyone is fighting with.
When Gremmy made a clone and "Doubled" his imagination I saw that as doubling his focus. If Gremmy can focus on more then he can theoretically do more things at once and dream up more unique ways to counter Kenpachi
Gremmy being the “mind” of the spirit king kind of seems viable, another interesting thing is Askin is “promoted” which is stated after gremmys defeat, and who other’s place would he have taken than gremmys
Yeah, Askin felt very out of place with the others and he, though hard to kill, wasn't an unkillable monster like Gerard, Pernida, and Lille. Uryu was there just because Yhwach needed to keep an eye on him.
I look at Gremmy's death like this, his brain eventually had to process so much information all at once because Kenpachi was so relentless, and when Gremmy imagined himself a new body, and it didn't work out he essentially went into shock, almost like a comatose like state. Maybe it's not the best explanation, but it's the one I usually go with.
I can agree with that, and it kind of lines up with what was discussed about the difference in experience. Until Kenpachi, Gremmy was never pushed in a fight thus his brain likely never had been that stressed out before. The first time he was he turned out to be his last battle because his brain wasn't used to having to process that much information or work that furiously. In a way, Kenpachi was probably the perfect opponent to fight Gremmy since he could continuously back him into a corner until the latter burnt himself out...while getting worked up in the first place. While not a glamorous end, it is rather...fitting and plausible when you think about it in a certain way.
Gremmy should have played defensively just kept cloning himself. Zaraki has limited stamina he can't kill all the Gremmy's and would eventually tire out. Gremmy is already so durable Gremmy had to effectively game end himself for Zaraki to win. Zaraki would definitely lose against infinite Gremmy's.
He died because because he stopped thinking and started feeling. Zaraki was grooming gremmy to be more in touch with his feeling, which is evident in the new gestures and spoken words that gremmy has shown. But gremmy isnt like zaraki and even when gremmy imagined to be like zaraki, gremmy had no quantifiable data that he can imagine other than zarakai just being a monster. Zarakai having his eye patch is actually a key component in zarakis win because it caused gremmy to miscalculate zarakis power in every attemp to kill him. Gremmy declaring zaraki a monster was the moment gremmy was defeated, and is a callback to all the other times zaraki was called a monster by enemies and his peers. This is also like technology so advanced, it is called magic. Somebody with unfathomable power, they are called monsters.
Man you are batting a thousand with these analysis videos! You’ve always done a good job but these are definitely some of your best, brother. I loved this fight and I think you hit every crucial point here. Gremmy really was an interesting character that we just didn’t get enough of. It’s really impressive Kubo got as much out of him as he did considering the context and plot at that point. Personally, I think Gremmy should have had a fight before Zaraki that solidifies the level of apprehension and fear others have for him. Even possibly killing a notable Shinigami. I know he said he killed Rose and Kensei but we don’t see any of it. Like, if Gremmy had killed Ikkaku, man… this fight would have had a whole new level of intensity and drama. Just my .02

YEEEEEEEEES WE LOVE MR TOMMO 💙 ❤️ 🤍
Makes sense
well technically gremmy isn't fully that of young zaraki cause gremmy doesn't like fighting he actually want to become a baker rather than a mindless sword fighting monster that was that of zaraki
I honestly did not care for this fight until I read this comment. What a interesting way to display a difference in character growth...
Wow I never saw it that way. Awesome explanation and I agree I wish the ending to the fight had been much better. It’s interesting how gremmy also feels fear near the end and ends up killing himself similar to how young kenpachi felt fear and subconsciously suppressed his power which resulted in his loss against unohana
nah thats a big ass reach.
kenpachi held HIMSELF back in order to enjoy his fights
whereas gremmy is literally locked away by juha. because he is too strong even juha is afraid
no where near the same
This was such a fun fight: A powered-up Zaraki Kenpachi facing off against one of the most insane hax abilities in Bleach history, maybe even Shonen history. The ending might have been a bit of an anti-climax, but it still kinda seemed fitting, and the whole fight was just so enjoyable, especially Zaraki one-shotting that colossal meteor!

I did not like this fight at all. Gremmy powers were just too unlimited.

I liked it!

The Anime Must Do This Moment Perfectly To Get The Impact Right
I can imagine this being the only time somebody else stoles Ichigo's theme.
They already did fun things with Number One emphasising great moments, like Aizen just cutting it silent.
Just imagine Chokkaku (Number One rock remix from Hell Verse Movie OST) riffing it up same as on Dangai Ichigo entry.

By doing so they locked up his imagination so he wouldn't be able to imagine such grand destruction 🤷🏽♂️ love the breakdowns though man you are by far one of my favorite channels to watch bud!
finally someone who gets just how dangerous and strong gremmy actually is
Whatever you do, don't show Gremmy the Chapter Black Tape from Yu Yu Hakusho.

@@YoruichiTheAlmighty Problem with your statement is that Quincies absorb reishi they don't have to be above their opponents reiatsu

How else would you deal with such hax abilities without totally obliterating stakes and consistency. Balancing it with well constructed character flaws is the only reasonable path. Kubo knew he wrote himself into a wall and needed to get rid of gremmy ASAP. Can't have 2 major villains.
I have a theory about why Gremmy died after his body was destroyed:
Yhwach absorbs the power of every fallen sternritter upon their death, so the same was likely happening to Gremmy after his body ruptured.
That makes a lot of sense.

Honestly I think this might be one of the best overall fights in Bleach.
it was basically gremmy vs gremmy
@@kevinb5417 nah, this is one of the worst fights in the whole series
@@mastixencounter K. Cool.
Agreed 💯💯
I think Zaraki is doing to Gremmy in a way what Unohana did to Zaraki. He is bringing out something which is suppressed within Gremmy akin to what Unohana did to Zaraki.
Nice thought
Nah its just the mangaka getting rid of a character he shouldn't have introduced. Literally gave him a looney tunes ability to just kill him off because he imagined himself dying lmao.

I think something similar, Zaraki was trying to give Gremmy what Unohana couldn't give Zaraki as a kid. A good fight.
Gremmy's wild imagination is so powerful he imagined himself dying. Kenpachi did inception to Gremmy.
people don't give this arc credit. It's fantastic to me (for the most part). OG fans didn't like it because the short fights and random unsanctimonious deaths but i liked it because it was more like a war, a brutal unfair one.

These breakdowns are fantastic...I love the way you go into depth in each video.
I hope Yammy gets some development if the Hell arc continues

Gremmy's death makes perfect sense.
For quincies defeat meant death: either by the enemy or by Yhwach.
Gremmy could not imagine any way to defeat Kenpachi.

You've given me a whole new perspective to look at this fight from. Really good analysis!
Maybe simpliest answer: when Kenpachi said that "your body couldn't handle it". Gremmy, just for a second imagined, he won't be able to handle it at all... and as he imagined it, it happened and his body fully collapsed...
I feel like when gremmy imagined having kenpachis power he imagined it having it as a whole and at its highest and strongest which is why his body started to tear apart cause if u remember when zaraki went bankai and yachuri released a bit to much power it tore off his arm and that wasn't even releasing his power at full so if a portion of his power can tear off his arm easily then someone body like gremmy definitely can't withstand that power and resulted with his body tearing apart since he's imagination is imagining things as a whole rather than a portion of it
Just like when he put zaraki in space he opened a portal to where u can see 3 universes rather than spawning him hovering over earth

Thanks!
Thank you so much!

glad Im back to the channel. I had binged all your vids so I took a break to binge all of them now again and man, there are a lot of good ones. this one is amazing. thanks dude
When you mentioned unohana in this video, i imagined an awesome "what if" scenario. What if during the soul society arc, Ichigo ran into Unohana, the true kenpachi, instead of zeraki? Would ichigo make it out alive?
Unohana would dispatch him but wouldn't kill him, I figure.
She’d likely knock him out and take him to the head captain
Absolutely not. Ichigo wouldn't have survived against any of the other Captains, let alone a monster like Unohana.
@@corruptangel6793 unohana wouldn't kill ichigo, she'd prob let him pass or knock him out if needed
@Kyōka Suigetsu doubt that'd work, since Quincy zangetsu only started giving ichigo his Quincy powers after he fought quilge
Idk how you’ve done it, but you kept this fandom alive for the past decade. Because of you man I’m still a big fan of this series still
Meh, I know time restraints are a thing and all that, but I would have loved to see Gremmy's reason for dying like this expanded upon a bit more.
We already have strong setup why Gremmy would view existence as a pain: Shunned by everyone, locked in a prison like some kind of monster,
has to control his thoughts permanently, cant even take a second to reflect upon his life without his imagination possibly killing friends and foe and himself.
Been waiting for the Battle Analysis FOREVER!! So happy we finally are covering it!
The potential for this battle did leave me expecting more at the end. Your analysis, as always, was so good.
I think that gremmy's shrift is limited by his reiatsu so doubling the gremmy=double the spirit which equals double the reiatsu allowing him to summon the meteor
grammy should fight shinji (and hitsuagaia and hiyori and yukio)
@@lorddukfoxyzeppeli7921 your copying this under every comment is so cringe
Can't Gremmy imagine himself as having 1000x more reiastu.
@@RealLifeIronMan he would need to be able grasp how much reiatsu that is for example you definitely can't grasp the size of the universe it is similar to that he just doesn't understand what 1000 times reiatsu would be like
@@archielewis7514 Exactly he has the power to imagine anything, but he has to know what that anything is in absolute terms. Same way if he's never felt steel for example, he can imagine it but it won't have the same sturdiness
I don't think he could imagine Zaraki dead. Zaraki has so much spiritual pressure that attacks directly affecting him would probably take a lot more effort/strength.
50 minutes? Time for some Tea and Tommo
We appreciate you Mr. Tommo!
Ooooh yes. I’ve been waiting for this one 🙌🏽
Meaning, Gremmy with his imagination couldn't fathom the amount of power that resides inside Kenpachi and Kenpachi has more power inside himself than anyone in the series.
but then gerard becomes a thing and shows gremmy would have known someone stronger

@@40kconquest10 His power was visibly straining him, so there is no way he could do it infinitely, I imagine even summoning more and more clones would only make it worse since none of them were dropping extra brain jars, all that stress was being heaped on the original
beautiful analysis! One of my most anticipated fights to be animated :))
I think grimmy trying to quantify his imagination is a perfect example.. he doesn’t fully understand his powers capabilities.
this is the second time I've watched this and I must admit, still stands as an amazing analysis.
Always felt like Kyoraku would have been a cool matchup with Gremmy, both alter reality, and both mix childish playfulness with a devilish side… plus imagine Gremmy actually keeping up with the children’a game since he was a kid, forcing Kyoraku to actually use his Bankai…
I don’t think someone as mentally fragile as Gremmy would have lasted against Shunsuis bankai. It would have sent him in to a spiral of depression.
Gremmy and kenpachi are in my top 10 favorite characters.
This fight I wanted you to cover
Great video.
48:15 being respectful with this opinion:
Martial artists (white/yellow belts) train and imagine how to beat their master whose a black belt.
I hope when they bring gremmy to the anime, that they’ll give us the scene with liltotto and gremmy, like maybe have gremmy try and protect her when he gets the meteor to come down
Thanks for the great content you put out dude. You’ve helped me enjoy the last arc and understand it way better than I did 🤙🏽
It makes sense imagine your never fought then your first fight is mike Tyson like come on dawg !
And the moment Gremmy subconsciously internalized that idea, he was simply never able to win the battle.
keep doing what you are doing, Great stuff.
the stuff coming out of Zaraki in space is just his gases on the inside of his body being forced to the outside because of the difference in pressure, so basically his lungs and stomach/other organs are collapsing as the gases are forced out of them
Big fan of the thumbnail work on this one!
I actually like how he ended the fight. At least the part of him imagining himself stronger than Kenpachi and not realizing the strength of his body. No one should be able to beat Gremmy with that power but he doesn't know how to fight and was taught by Kenpa, so attempting to match his physical was his downfall.
what i find odd is that gremmy knows people stronger
ywatch and gerard and both much stronger

I think Gremmy's limits are done subconsciously. Having limitless possibility actually prevents you from doing anything (analysis paralysis).
So, he limited himself for his sanity. That's my take on it.

Good work, this one's particularly well done.👍
He don't care about you little bro.
Watched the whole vid in one sitting. Worth it.
Holy cow I love this fight! I remember at the time of the manga release Tekking101 made a video of he would've changed from the fight and thought it was good
Too bad Tekking only does One Piece nowadays. I would love them to do a collaboration and live discussions and stuff
My two favorite characters in Bleach.
I thought Aizen was your favorite 😜😜 haha I kid I kid. I've always known for years it's been Kenpachi. As is mine
Loved this analysis❤
I think Gremmy died because he devoted his entire being to fighting Kenpachi then he looses and has nothing more to live for
Kubo ran into one of the most difficult writing holes in existence.
The crazy part about all this is kempachi is still suppressing his power because he still has the eye patch on.
Was looking forward to this breakdown. Gremmy's effect seemingly is something that in the end still targets him. He has to be the target. Even the meteor targeted in. His limit is the field of reach where there's interaction with him.
Honestly it's pretty interesting that one of the strongest Soul Reapers is the pinnacle of overwhelming might, while one of the strongest Sternritter is pinnacle of adapting.
grammy should fight shinji (and hitsuagaia and hiyori and yukio)
Gremmy is such a layered character! This video shows a different perspective and also very good! I've watched today. ua-cam.com/video/Slzpc4UbnpE/v-deo.html
kenpachi seems like that dad that will force his kids to do drugs just to beat them up for it.
Kubo had a bad habit in this arc of showing long awaited powers in just a single chapter. It wasn't just Nozarashi. Look at Unohana's Bankai, Urahara's Bankai, Shunsui's Bankai, and even something like Komamura's new power when he becomes human. Imagine if he treated all of these things similarly to how he treated Yamamoto's Bankai.
i like that it was so quick because it really shows how op those bankai are and why they had never used it in front of anyone
This is the fight that I am the most excited for to see animated!
I most excited to see Shunsui’s bankai be animated.
@@glowhoo9226 Yeah that’s going to be insane, also Urahara’s Bankai is hype

Personally, I think Gremmy should have had a fight before Zaraki that solidifies the level of apprehension and fear others have for him. Even possibly killing a notable Shinigami.
