Beware manga spoilers in this video!
Orihime Inoue isn't a character we've talked about much on this channel, but she's very interesting in her own right. I felt it was only right to finally dedicate some time to such a major character, and actually explore whether or not she ever got a killer instinct, and if that even matters - enjoy!

Orihime's continued determination to be valued member of the team, despite seemingly not being suited to the battle-hardened world of Bleach, has always made her interesting to me. What did you think of Inoue's development arc throughout the series? Let me know!
I really want Orihime to be the one to repair the broken tensa zangetsu.
@@anjanavapati3131 didn't she? Tsukishima changed its past to get around The Almighty and then she rejected that past, fixing Tensa Zangetsu. Am I remembering wrong?
I think that Orihime's development as well as her relationship with Ichigo is some of the most interesting work in any manga.
It always felt really wierd to me that the ability born from orihime's soul is one that requires a personality that she does not have at all. It also felt like there were alot of ways Kubo could have written her to develop new powers and techniques to have her be an interesting fighter by maybe mixing her fairies to work together in different teams and formations. Instead she is just the healer... then gets sidelined for pretty much the entire Hueco Mundo arc... then does nothing in the fullbring arc...
I was very surprised that you didn't bring up Orihime's whole aspect of 'Rejection'. She's among the most perceptive humans, often able to see through Ichigo's put-on faces and even realize the things that were wrong with Kon and later with Rukia--even in the scene with Numb Chandelier, she notices it before anyone else does. Despite that, Orihime starts off in this place of rejecting and placating things: she rejects her negative feelings around Sora; she rejects confrontation with Numb Chandelier while she tries to get her friends to escape without telling them of the threat; she doesn't ever bring up her feelings with Ichigo despite having very strong ones. Orihime is always rejecting feelings of her own and even the severity of events around her--she has this very "Everything is fine!" sunny disposition but we come to learn how much that's performative (the whole idea of 'wearing a mask' both literally and socially is a HUGE part of BLEACH that doesn't come up much in discussion but is fundamental to early portrayal of most of our main cast from Ichigo and Orihime to Rukia, Urahara, and Byakuya--even major antagonists like Aizen, Gin, and Tsukishima mask their true intent or feelings). It's fitting, then, that her powers are ones of rejection of events themselves--of things that happen outside of her bubble, of trauma that befalls her friends, and of the threats that exist beyond her walls. Orihime's whole character arc has her confronting those truths. A large part of her going to Soul Society is her willingness to approach and accept those truths and the Hueco Mundo arc revisits that with even more personal danger for her.
Orihime's other major character aspect is her ability to perceive the humanity in others despite everything else--she does this with Ichigo (it's a large part of why she loves him), she does this with Sora, she famously does it with Ulquiorra, and she does it with Moeh too. Every time that she reaches out towards that humanity, it comes at the risk of her own life. Despite that danger, Orihime never gives up and never stops believing in that humanity.
I'm glad you talked about that empathy of hers though I wish you'd tracked the throughline of it throughout the whole series and the interplay of it with that 'rejection' aspect of her. We really shouldn't just read her ability as just 'healing' or 'a shield' when it's much more significant--it's Orhime's fundamental ability to reject aspects of reality versus the things she chooses to embrace.
Orhime has always been one of my favorite characters, its so nice to see the majority of the Bleach Fandom shifting their opinions on her. Her empathy IS her strength; the fact that she continues to have a soft heart despite everything the world throws at her is what makes her an admirable character. She never let's her sweetness dissipate no matter the world's cruelty (i.e., when Menoly & Loly torture/bully her). She's a character that perfectly encapsulates empathy as strength, you don't always need to be physically fighting or having a killing intent to be deemed as strong.
You don't need to have killing intent or lack empathy to be a hero fighting to protect others either... heck it is a Shonen staple to end up becoming friends with the very enemies you fight. She could be a fighter while resolving not to kill, to have empathy and compassion be her core strengths without delivering the opposite message by having those things make her weaker.
Your last sentence is something ppl always gotta remember whenever they throw around the "bad female character" complaint to ones like Orihime
I think the Fandom is maturing
I'm fairly new to Bleach (I'm on the arc where they break into Hueco Mundo to save Orihime, but I only started the show a couple of weeks ago) and I have never hated Orihime, but she's never been my favorite either.
I'm definitely one of those people who shifted their opinion on her over the years. I originally watched the series as it aired on adult swim when i was in high school like 15 years ago or something. I didn't find her annoying per se but i certainly didn't find her interesting at the time. I recently re watched the series and honestly she may be one of my favorite characters and a very under rated comedic element to the show at times.
I've always liked Orihime... her reaction to Ichigo having a hole in his chest made perfect sense for a 15 year old girl watching her love getting killed so gruesomly... she wasn't crying... Kubo showed Orihime going through pure shock. I'm glad I wasn't one of the people who thought she was just the helpless damsel in destress. She just wasn't your basic shonin battle manga character
I mean how wasn't she just a damsel in distress there?
@@joelsasmad she wasnt the one who needed to be saved at that particular point in time it's more so her reaction to a loved one's "death"
@@okita_souji_alter I mean said loved one was there to save her after she was being held hostage the entire arc. So she was still technically a damsel in distress, even if the ficus of the scene wasn't on her.
@@joelsasmad She put herself in that situation to save her friends for the arancar arc , that falls under self sacrafice rather than damsal in distresses.
The only time we can really call her that is the first arc she her brother attacked her.
Otherwise Orihime is never a passive character in the story and even if she looses a fight she pushes on ahead.
@@BigHeadClan "Come with me if you want your boyfriend to live. It totally isn't kidnapping if you choose to come with me!"
Ichigo needed to put his killing intent into battling serious opponents. While Orihime's desire was to save, heal and protect as best she can
they say killing intent....but by how often ichigo befriends the people he fights....i dont think that means what they think that means
@@tokiravenborne6252 That's the thing. You don't need to surrender compassion to be a fighter and Orihime definitely could have been one.
@@joelsasmad i think the whole conceit is that each one of the team members fly in the face of that line...... like, each one is energized more by what they protect over what they intend to cut. they all prove that line wrong i think.. like, a shield can be just as effective at defending what is important as a blade...i mean, their single minded (compassion?) certainly starts to rub off on soul society....until the war.....ok, maybe im wrong lol
@@tokiravenborne6252 I mean if we take the can't fear your own world novels as cannon then the soul society actually allowed the surviving quinces to continue existing and become allies after the final arc rather than hunting them to extinction like they would have before.
@@joelsasmad it is absolutely true that you dont need to surrender compassion to be a fighter, but it's not just Orihimes compassion, it's her entire personality. She's just not a fighter. But, this doesnt mean she cant be on the frontlines as a healer.
Here’s what I’ll say about Orihime’s growth as a character: it’s just as necessary and meaningful as everyone else’s. I can only speak for myself, but I think since Bleach fits squarely in the shonen demographic, it’s easy to get caught up in the spectacle of fighting and believe that combat is what makes a character valuable to the overall story. Did I think that Orihime was annoying at certain points? Yes. However, the older I get the more I understand how difficult of a position she’s put in. We need to remember that she’s a teenage girl for most of the story, not an adult with years of life experience behind her. I think it’s admirable that Kubo wrote a character as openly empathic as her who stood out from other ‘Action Girls’ and even ‘Faux Action Girls’ among the series. Orihime’s maturity feels believable and sensible, and I think that’s what I’ve come to appreciate about her.
Agreed we got plenty of awesome women being shonen fighters, Orihime need not be this when there are already enough options. Why cant we have her be kind and not a Fighter? Oh wait we did yay kubo
I've always found Orihime to be a masterclass in female character growth within anime.
i always see her arc as coming of age, and when i learn so much of her background i applaud her journey and seeing him on par with yhwach's attacks makes her a valuable asset compared to how she was before. remember, her fullbring links to her emotions, now that she is determined, her powers even her defense are greater then before if not more stable.
I think fans just expected Orihime to be an incredible badass that pulled off crazy flashy moves like Ishida, Rukia and the rest of the supporting cast, but failed to realize that she *was* a badass, but in a less flashy way, by sticking to her morals and changing the world around her. The moment in where she heals Lolly and Melonny from death (or very-very-very near death) and those two, who had always seen Orihime as a frail little doll they could mess with, begin fearing her and calling her a "monster", was fantastic. It held a double meaning, in both her ridiculous degree of healing and the incompatibility of her overwhelming empathy with the cruelty of Hueco Mundo.
But, I do wonder if Kubo will now, in the Hell Arc, give Orihime more time to shine. Yeah, with many more years to train, she most likely has reached new heights with her power, but what I want to see most is a possible scenario where Kazui is in danger and Orihime steps up to the plate, with her desire to protect being turned up to 11, now that she is a mother protecting her son (also Kubo can easily draw parallels between her and Masaki at this point). Methinks Tsubaki *will* fly again then, but Orihime will still display mercy. Making whoever she fights in Hell scared of her, yeah, but still be spared.
I hope she a roel in the Hell arc too, and we get see more of her abilites to protect her family 😊
Orihime is a healer pacifist and her role is exactly that. In a world were battles and wars are often fought to the bitter end with zero quarter given she's a merciful subversion to that norm. Her allies fight to protect or to maintain a balance, many of the latter being trained and well practiced killers but she does not need that for obvious reasons. A true angel of mercy.
I mean that doesn't mean that you don't fight. Fighting to protect the ones you love and giving mercy to your enemies, potentially making them friends is a shonen staple as well as something ichigo himself has done.
The crazy part is that she’s actually very powerful, but she fears her own lethality.
@@steve5875 True. Given the horrors she's seen and the sometimes bloody actions of her friends/allies it's not surprising she holds back and only intervenes to alleviate the madness. She doesn't want to succumb and who can blame her?
More like the Angel of stupidity
I've always loved Orihime, I never understood the hate, I think I would've liked more moments like the one with Ginjo or the one at the end with her teaming up with Ichigo to fight Ywhach but all in all I always thought she was amazing
Truth. She's essentially brought her own brand of the Geneva conventions to the Spirit worlds where war without mercy, brutal killing and full scale massacres/genocide are accepted practices. Her standing against that darkness without compromise makes her admirable indeed.
It's her writing. It became incredibly difficult for me after Aizen played up her ability. He claimed she had god-like powers and could rewrite reality. And then this never went anywhere. Had he never said anything about that, had he only abducted her to distract Ichigo and his allies, I would have liked her much more. I also didn't enjoy the majority of her personality being so focused on Ichigo. I would have loved for her to spend more time in the manga developing herself separately from him.
@@FoxxyFire-HellFrost I get that. I mean her powers are godlike, she can essentially bring back the dead, she does it against that one all female Arrancar who fucked with her but I can understand where you're coming from. She could've had more focus outside of Ichigo but I don't think that focus is badly written either.
@@rodneylane952 It just felt "convenient" that her Shun-Shun Rikka suddenly didn't work on Ichigo after we had been told she could basically do anything. I also wish they could have attempted to deliver on her desire to destroy the Hogyōuku. Like, if she had tried and failed that would have shown me that she was being utilized in a way other than damsel in distress. Her willingness to get involved during the previous arcs made her much more likeable to me because she wasn't just doing things for Ichigo. She was doing it for everyone and even though she had limits, she still tried. I know her main role is a healer, but I still would have liked for her to feel like less of an eye candy accessory.
@@FoxxyFire-HellFrost We're told Orihime's powers are tied to her emotions, which is why her offensive attack is weak since she has no desire to fight (and why she ties that attack with her shield later) so seeing the man she loves die right in front of her definitely nerfed her ability to heal him. And unlike earlier when she healed Ichigo before his fight with Grimmjow, she saw this happen right in front of her.
Tho I do agree with her using her power to fuck with the hogyoku, even if we saw her try and that didn't work in the moment, it would be cool if that action is why the hogyoku started to reject Aizen.
Ichigo and Orihime, both orange haired, both want to protect. Ichigo fights to protect, Orihime shields to protect. they're each other's shield and sword
Orihime is such a rare character, misunderstood but really if she were not as caring and loving as she is so many characters would not even be around, I really enjoyed this analysis
Orihime is the reason I started watching bleach I was a kind hearted meek kid who used to get bullied, but I've always cared for everyone even people that didn't like me or hurt me. I'm now a confident young man but Orihime is needed for people like me to feel we have a place in battle Manga/Anime.
Same bro same 🙏🙏
I never liked people who just let themselves get bullied. Will it still be okay if the bullies brought something that can kill you? I just don’t understand weak people’s minds at all.
I'm glad you're OK and doing better after that 💞 You're such a sweet man having to go through that, and you're better than the people who hurt you would ever hope to be 💞
❤❤❤
@@ライスハンバーグ-u9rit can be complicated. If you're being bullied you often don't have much power. And although you can debate it, it can be Honorable to not retaliate. I have a bow of non-violence now, but in the past I've been a big and failed fighter and I've been someone who just takes it (like Chad ❤❤❤)
And it's complicated, I wouldn't be so judgmental with how people react to violence and bullying, there's many ways people cope
I'm not ashamed to admit that my first anime crush when I was a teen was Orihime lol. I remember feeling so sick to my stomach when I saw her having an emotional breakdown seeing Ichigo's corpse basically. To see her going from someone being protected to being the protector of the group felt so good. I remember being so happy and proud when she was finally realizing her dream to fight alongside Ichigo in the final battle. She still remains one of my favorite characters, and I'm glad she got a happy conclusion to her arc and story.
I love her, since day one. This video was what I've been saying for nearly a decade. Knowing her character is the difference between being a child and an adult. She's suffered her whole life. From a kid her parents were horrible people. Her brother, her protector, dies. She's left alone depressed and hurting but she perseveres and keeps the facade of a cheery disposition.
You really helped me appreciate her more. Inoue fighting against Yuha alongside Ichigo really was a testament to her growth.
I don't know if it's just me, but I always thought Ichigo's non shinigami friends are utterly underused and yet so much more interesting than Rukia and co. I guess that's why I enjoyed the fullbring arc so much. I hope that in the new anime adaptation they do those characters more justice in the plot, at least as far as possible. I'd love a team-up between Chad, Inoue and maybe ishida at some point.
I love Orihime. She's my favorite Character, people always downplay the Healers and they shouldn't because without the Healers are heroes would be dead already.
I do not trust anyone who hates this precious woman
Same
YOU BOTH ARE SO REAL FOR THAT cuz sameeee @LenOnTheDoor0000 @chawli2782
I never really disliked Orihime, but I've definitely grown to appreciate her more as I've gotten older. Maybe because I myself have become more of a pacifist, but at the same time, I'm definitely ready to do what's necessary to defend my friends & family.
So yeah, I can definitely appreciate Orihime's outlook, and as others have pointed out it's a refreshing contrast to most of the characters in the story
Something I would love to see in the future is a short video on the Karakura shinigami like Yuki, Shino, and Zennosuke. They were played off in the more comedic aspect, but I found them really interesting. It was especially fun seeing them expanded on slightly more in CFYOW.
Orihime was never meant to be a fighter, she isn't emotionally built for it. There are people out there that just can't fight no matter what is happening around them and its not something we accept because it can be seen as cowardice. Fight and flight response manifests in many different ways and with Orihime it was always that she was peaceful and timid only really doing anything when its absolutely necessary.
Counterpoint: A timid and peaceful individual learning to overcome their own nature becuase there are things bigger than them going on and they need to step up to protect those they care about would have made for an awesome character arc and honestly feels more like what they were going with when Orihine first got her powers and fought to protect Tatsuki.
@@joelsasmad yeah but she doesn't want to fight. She's the closest thing this series has to a pacifist with only 1 hollow kill on her record (I think). I don't get why people want her to kill when it's not who she is.
@@joelsasmad and thats what orihime did why are you an ignorant?
There is a similar conversation in World Trigger by Isamu Toma regarding a character called Amatori Chika that describes this to a T.
I often dont usually like these innocent goody two shoes characters but I never felt that way with Orihime. I think Kubo portrayed her beautifully in a genuine down to earth kindness without being farfetched or fake. I also felt relatable to her when I was young and the earlier chapters. Having a strong empathy towards people and being genuinely my authentic self in wanting to help people. Then I kind of veered off because this world is cruel and will eat you alive if you dont speak up when you need to. Anyways she has stayed consistent throughout and has grown to change and developed without having to loose her core self.
I sincerely love this analysis. It might be my favourite one by you, how you actively defend against the unmitigated and wrongly directed hate towards Orihime. I've always loved her character, even from the beginning of reading Bleach years and years ago. I think my favourite moments in the entire series are the most emotional ones, and of course Orihime is present and the center of those moments. She truly is the beating heart of Bleach, and I think she shines brightest when addressing Ichigo right before she leaves with Ulquiorra and when Ulquiorra kills Ichigo. The only two times I actually cried during reading, and of course it's Orihime to be the character who drives those moments home.
Ichihime are the best sword and shield duo!
A knight can’t always protect their blind spots after all.
Damn this was a great video!
They lost tho :D
My opinion of her changed drastically in the final arc where I understood her character for the first time. Whenever I reread her scenes in the precious arcs, I always find new appreciation for her, and it helps me understand her more.
I love Orihime, she's a beautiful, sweet, funny, headstrong and compassionate woman. I find her powers very interesting in both the Manga and the anime series. The way she able to defend Ywach's attacks with her shield to protect Ichigo and herself is very impressive and that's one of the things I love about her. She's my favorite female character in Bleach and I love her abilities 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
When I was younger and edgier, I thought Orihime was a bit wasted for not being a fighter, but when I reread the manga last year, I was struck by how much I've come to appreciate her brand of strength and the value she provided her friends and the story.
I wish that Kubo had played more into her "Empathy us her Power" because it would be awesome too see her using her defensive shields more in battles. Chad could have done better in his fights if Orihime was there to throw up a shield when possible. If her reflexes got faster I think she would be amazing the shield seems to be her best ability.
Yeah, I liked it when she deflected some of Yhwach's attacks while assisting Ichigo.
"Battle with aizen on the horizon"- tommo spitting bars
Its so interesting to see people studying characters and stories made by authors in such a deep sense.
This level is achieved by so few authors
In theory Tsubaki should be OP. It is stated to cut by rejecting what's on either side of him. Should be as strong as the strongest attack she can defend against. It's just that even if she attacks, subconsciously she doesn't want to harm anyone.
Unfortunately, all abilities in BLEACH are still beholden to one's own Reiatsu and conviction. Orihime definitely has some of the conceptually strongest abilities in the whole series, but often lacks either of the two other elements needed to really wield them powerfully. I always did think that was cool, though--giving one of the ultimate abilities to a character who was often unwilling or incapable of wielding it.
@@varsoonhks3211 Inoue's shunshun rikka defense can block the attacks of Yhwach multiple times. Inoue's getting stronger.
Orihime was distinguished from every other character in Bleach. Kubo wrote her different and it shows every time.
Her struggles and pain made her character development that much amazing to watch in the final arc
She's worked on herself to finally fight alongside Ichigo.
What a journey she had in Bleach from being always protected by Ichigo to Him asking her protect him ❤
Orihime may not be the strongest character but what makes her such a great character is her willingness to help her friends in anyway she can, her big heart and standing up to herself even if the obstacle seems impossible to overcome
She definitely got a huge power boos in thousand year blood war. She can heal way faster and her shield is super powerful able to knock back Al those hollows .she is one of my favorites.
Orihime is not a conventional character for a shounen. She's like a cross between seinen and shoujo. I've always liked her and for as many faults as the series might have, I'm really glad with the journey Orihime had, and specifically that her character arc *didn't* end with her just gaining that killing intent to fight. Instead she gets to keep that core characteristic, and slots nicely into the supporter role in a fight, shielding and healing her allies on the battlefield.
She was my favorite from day 1, and I'm really glad Kubo decided to give her the first Stage of the Final Boss Fight despite the lack of time he had. Show that he really had something to tell with Orihime that he wanted to get across. Killing intent doesn't matter, what matters is protecting your comrades, and Orihime's way is one of literal shielding, while the others are more focused on removing the threat.
I was so happy for her when she said that "Yes!" when Ichigo asked her to be in charge of defense against Yuhabach.
I feel like Kobo had a good plan for Orihime in the Hueco Mundo arc. He had a point in the manga where she refused to be saved because she was going to use her powers to destroy the Hogyoku and I think that would have been awesome! Ichigo and the others doing everything they could to weaken Aizen, but they can't kill him. It all looks like it's been for nothing, Ichigo used Mugetsu, but still he's not dead, but then Orihime cries "I reject!" and blasts her shield straight through the Hogyoku and shatters it! That would be cool and would have given Orihime the arc that she deserved, it would have shown explicitly that she is an important character and has agency over the story, but then that would have meant losing Aizen and him not being around for the final arc and so Orihime got sidelined. :P
I would love but then again:
1° people would find anticlimactic whoever defeats Aizen be Orihime
2° there wasen't a reliably way for her get there
3° kubo had plans for Aizen
@@CelVini 1) I don't know, I think it was kind of anticlimactic to have Aizen live at the end of Ichigo's final attack, an attack which literally cut him in two. I think having Orihime kill him would have been more of a resolution and would have connected her and Ichigo more.
2) There was no way to get Urihara there either, yet he was there anyway. Urihara or someone else could have easily brought her, Orihime kind of gets taken places a lot.
3) Yeah, but he really didn't do too much other than open the way to Yhwach in the final arc, that was it. Orihime could have easily fulfilled that role as well!
Aizen was already immortal by that point, so not much would have changed, and in any case, she did find her own agency in the plot without having to take a life.
I've always wondered just how dangerous she would be if she had Kenpachi's mentality. If she had killing intent I imagine she'd be able to just reject people out of existence, or negate their abilities entirely. I'd love to see a bloodthirsty Orihime at some point, though that's incredibly unlikely. Maybe the Hell Arc (if it ever happens) can give us a chance to see that. Now that Kazui exists, she may be more willing to kill if his life is ever on the line.
i guess she would become what gremmy was
Basically another Unohana
Orihime fighting style : Kill with kindness
Once we understand the roles we play, it’s easier to say “ahh that behavior makes sense”
Orihime definitely doesn't have the killer Instinct. But I would also argue that Ichigo really isn't a killer either. There's only one advisory that he's killed.
Ichigo doesn’t but Zangetsu does
When has a shounen love interest blocked attacks from the likes of Ulquiorra, Ginjo and Ywach. Exactly ZERO times. Orihime despite being a healer/support class heroine accomplished all of this and even landed blows on them, she is the GOAT wife and I will not hear any heresy of Ichikia. I like Orihime a lot. She indeed is the glue of the group. And I like how emotionaly strong and resolute she is.
Orihime is, to me, just another mark of how great of an author Tite Kubo really is. Her value and development are so subtle and well done over the arcs that you really don't see much under the serface until you actually pay attention. Truly such a character is an inspiration to me, and has taught me a lot about unconditional love, empathy and compassion. I trust 100% I'm a better person from following Bleach thanks to Orihime.
i think that maybe her power set is more suited to her being older and thats why i hope they show her in this new hell verse arc. maturity and self awareness seems to be a big factor on how powerful she can get.

Something about Orihime I always liked was that she reminds me of Aerith in a way where she is soft as flower but wields incredible power. There’s something cool about someone with OP abilities that is more focused on protecting those they love than destroying their opposition.
She became awesome in the fullbringer arc, total fan of her arc
Love how mrtommo say it doesnt matter that they lost the fight against juha bach because at the end of te day it certainly doesnt matter since whats important is ichigos and orihimes character development cominf to full circle in the battle, sure it would have been great to see them win at least in something but ichigo relying in one of his friends and not pushing them aside like he used to do and orihime being able to stand aside him and actually helping him against a huge enemy is definitely a huge turning point. The toxic ichirukis love to say they failed in that fight but no its the opposite it actually showed how they were able to change and get stronger and standing their ground even if they lost, which allows for orihime to be vital in repair ichigos sword and allowing to ichigo fight again
Its quite impossible to have Orihime soloing Yhwach for that matter, its the growth she and Ichigo got but the toxic shippers ignore that lol. The problem is they will always find a way to hate Orihime whether she does something or not. I just don't understand lol
Great video bro!! Personally I've always loved Orihime. She's my number 1 waifu she's beautiful, busty and strong. She def came a very long way throughput the series she grew into someone who can fight beside ichigo where she always wanted to be. Was waiting for a character analysis on her but this was a great video brother keep up the good work.
Orihime is such a wonderful character, I've always liked her, shipped her and ichigo since i started watching bleach way back in the day when i was in 6th grade. I found her so relatable. As a ginger myself who also experienced some bullying due to my hair color, but she also thought me that kindness is a strenght not a weakness and that you don't have to be agressive in order to defend yourselves, to be true to yourself and do what feels right for you.
A lot of great characters in fiction have subtle character arcs; sometimes, it's just *too* subtle for the audience. I'm not saying Bleach fans have no appreciation for subtlety, but let's be honest, the target demographic is much more interested in the *obvious* aspects of the anime. It's good to have a reminder that not everything, in fiction *or* in real life, is about the big, showy, actiony aspects.
In other words, any fictional series that spoon feds people.
Saved to watch later. Can’t wait to hear your take on Orihme’s character!
i always sort of imagined orihime would end up being a glass cannon sniper if ever she combined her powers.....like as an example, use her shield directly over her so she has a save vantage point and fire off the one fairy at a long range. the "negate" effect would proc once the target was hit wherein they would have the impact sight start to 'dust away'.....like a redhead long range snappening......maybe like soul suiciding itself? sorry. ill have to go back and read it again, this has been your doctor certified highdea of the day!
I think one aspect you could've also gone into this video is the representation of each character for the different races with humans. Chad represents the Hollows, Uryuu the Quincy, but Orihime is the only pure human whose powers manifested out of sheer willpower shone through the Hōgyoku. Willpower is often the primary trait associated to humans as "the human spirit", that although weak, is able to push through any adversity. This explains why Ichigo needs her at the end and how she can be strong enough to defend against Yhwach.
I still think she needs to be the captain of squad 4 that’s would be awesome. She definitely qualifies for it.
YES YES YESSSS
With all that said,...
Ichigo coming to rely on orihime presence in battle was foreshadowed in his fight against grimjowl. He getting handed until he heard her yell for him.
Idea: I would love to see Orihime get creative with her powers and evolve them even further, say for example if she used her powers like Invisible Woman's Force Field
for reference: Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four has evolved to the point of having the strongest powers of the Four, most notably using her Force Field to Capture, disarm or even threaten to kill her opponents, Orihime has the same kind of potential with her shield
I would argue Johnny is potentially stronger because he can burn as hot as the sun and destroy the whole planet if he really wanted.
Although in a 1v1 I think sue would win as she could trap him in invisible bubble quick enough he would suffocate especially with his flames consuming any oxygen in the bubble.
@@stempest7218 Sue once stopped the Hulk by placing a Force Field inside his' body and telling him that if he didn't stop she'd blow him up from the inside,
additionally she can create any invisible Constructs that she can think of like a Green Lantern but you can't see her, the only real limit to Sue's power is her imagination
@@HaakonTheRayquaza I agree sue is a force to be reckoned with not only with offence but also defence during civil war all the people on caps side were almost killed by the lightning of a thor clone and sue saved everyone and during infinity war she saved all the heroes from a small nuclear bomb in a building they all met up in.
Sue has the better and more useful power then Johnny by far and is the best member of the fantastic four.
However Johnny still has the greatest fire power as he can make himself as hot as the sun he just has to limit his powers constantly or he would destroy the planet at worst.
@@stempest7218 that's still pretty good though, I like that every member of the Fantastic Four have such cool and unique abilities, but if I had to choose I would wanna be an invisible psychic over a Hothead
Great video! I have always liked her character, seems to me that is the logical consequence of introducing a regular human in this world. I hope you do a full character analysis on her in the future
One of the most underrated characters in the series.
Yes the countless Kurosaki-kuns do get a bit annoying at a certain point but the writting and development of her character is so good to look at, shés one of the best female characters in all of shounen and doesn´t get neraly as much creadit as she deserves.
Hopefully when the anime comes back and people see how broken she becomes and the end of her journy as a character she finnaly receives the respect that she always deserved
So true ❤️
Yeah, even Kubo's admitted to being unhappy with the way the anime studio portrayed his manga, particularly with the way they approached Orihime. Hopefully that changes now that he's working behind the scenes with them for the new TYBW Arc.
She was only truly interesting to me in the arrancar arc when Aizen grabbed her and brought up the Event Rejection thing because I thought that was a really cool reveal and that she was connected to something higher in the grand scheme along with Ichigo (because of the red hair thing), like they're maybe related from some divine clan or secretly from a royal house reincarnated or something.
I thought he was going to get her to do something with the Hogyoku, like maybe tricking her into removing a seal from Urahara but have her thinking she destroyed it or something so she had a more direct practical reason as to why Aizen would grab her, I think the anime flirted with that idea.
All the stuff with her , Ichigo, Grimmjow and Ulquiorra especially her empathy for Ulquiorra was solid character and thematic stuff with respect to how resolve conflict and what violence and contingent with hopelessness means in this world.
The reveal of how she got her powers and her being a Fullbringer made her way less interesting and TYBW had too little for me to care about a lot of that felt like an afterthought TBH.
Last time orihime had killing intent, she beat up a guy for his shinigami attire. It was comedic but impressive to see her jump someone.
I'm just surprised really, at the idea that people dislike Inoue for not being good in combat. Naturally she's a healer, and I never thought people would take that against her. She's amazing, and I'm glad Ichigo ended up with her despite me liking Rukia more for the majority of the series
i loved her from the beginning, we need to understand that protecting and healing are not easy things to do😂.
I can't really say how i felt about orihime when i first watched the anime, it's been so long. But as i'm rewatching it now it's clear to see she's not a bad character, despite people complaining about her being useless.
I don't know why I haven't noticed this until now, but her hair clips are way bigger in the final arc.
I know she never would, but do you think she *could* reject the reality of someone?
I think she would, when it comes to someone hurting her son.
Yup if she can restore time no doubt she can reverse it... uh let me rephrase that if she can return a person to a time stamp then she could probably return them to the time they were a fetus or didnt exist at all
Orihime has come along way her healing time is done in seconds now and her shield is so powerful plus she can now sense life among the injured and dead. I’ve always loved her character and to have the ability to reject any injuries as if they never happened at all. And she can restore weapons and other things if they break. I know she is human but I would love to see her as captain of squad 4.
excellent video about orihime
Sums up why Orihime and Sakura are two of my favorite characters. Both struggling to find their place on the battle field, not wanting to feel useless to others and an eagerness to help. Went through their arcs and are now accretional warriors and healers. Love them to bits.
Eh I can agree with only of them. The other had bad writing in terms of growth in maturity
Ehhh, I think Kubo Tite has a way better understanding of writing female characters than any female character Kishimoto's ever made. Orihime's written with way more complexity than Sakura.
My love for Inoue has increased because of this Discussion
Man you are too cool man, you got me back into anime again remembering my roots and your so in depth it's exactly how bleach should be explained and shown how amazing it is I love all the greats dbz trigun big o yu yu Hakusho cowboy bebop and of course bleach is one of the big three original anime's from back when we were shunned for liking any of this thank you MrTommo I also subscribed gota keep up with your Intel
No matter what anyone says about Orihime being useless and all of the unnecessary hate people want to throw at her, I’ve always liked her as a character and her personality. I know several of folks had a big problem with her not fighting back against the two arrancar women Loly and Menoly. The first time I watched that scene, I got so pissed off and asking myself “Why’s Orihime being an idiot and not fighting back?!” Now looking back at it though, I think there was a reasoning behind it even if it was dumb. I don’t think it’s entirely Kubo’s fault, but it really wouldn’t have done him harm to have her fight back Loly and Menoly and show them that they picked the wrong woman to mess with. And in Loly and Menoly’s minds, they were thinking that Orihime has got Aizen’s full attention and is interested in her when in truth he used her as a bait to lure Ichigo out of Karakura Town and have him fight more opponents, that was the whole point of the arc. I really don’t think Orihime deserves some unnecessary hate, I think people should accept her for who she is, nothing more. I’ve accepted her for who she is. Thanks for doing this video.
I loved that scene because it highlighted Orihime's morals as a pacifist. There aren't many characters in fiction/or works of media that represent what being a pacifist actually is. The only other work that comes to mind is the movie, Hacksaw Ridge about a real-life soldier (can't remember his name), who was on the battlefield during WWII but refused to bear arms and kill. He ended up receiving a Congressional Award for his bravery.
I like the scene in episode 271 where orihime cries her help for Ichiro to wake up vs ulquiorra and urya does all he can to hold off ulquiorra and orihime was helpless to do anything and her cries of shouting inside ulquiorra is too strong really hit me as I saw how she knew she had no power to combat ulquiorra and being helpless against someone who hurts your love ones is a terrible feeling to have and it makes you wish you had a special power within you to awaken to use for the protection of your love ones to show that why anyone shouldn’t ever hurt your love ones and put you through so much pain
because if orihime would’ve been in another franchise like dragonball born a saiyan that scene in episode 271 she would’ve became a super saiyan in that traumatic event especially with her being caged in aizen’s tower for many episodes till she got free by her friends that would’ve added more emotional rage boost to her saiyan genes to go super saiyan vs ulquiorra and Ichigo and urya would see her spiritual pressure be something they never seen before in a bright gold aura and see her eyes are green
Just Imagine if orihime was born a saiyan in that moment in episode 271 vs ulquiorra that would’ve been one of the most impactful emotional super saiyan transformation moments in anime history if dragonball franchise had characters like orihime as a saiyan first.
And also in my what if imagination like what if ichigo was born a saiyan like orihime was born a saiyan then in episode 271 you would’ve had two super saiyans awakened in the fight against ulquiorra based off my details I gave about orihime power up.
I'm honestly curious as to what her powers would look like if she was indeed more of a violent character. What if she just had zero value for the lives of anyone who endangered her friends? Would her offensive abilities be as impressive as her restorative powers?
I have imagined a scenario where she uses Tsubaki to absolutely mangle characters like Jirobo or those 2 bimbos that harassed her in Hueco Mundo.
I think so tbh, she could split the bonds of practically anything apart lol
Aizen called her powers godlike, so yeah, she could probably do a ton of damage.
Riatsu is one’s will.
Orihime lost her whole family and her will became saving the ones around her. She knows once someone is gone they are gone and will do everything in her power to keep herself from feeling that loss. Even seeing her enemies feeling that loss strikes a nerve.
Honestly i think how orihime, chad and ichigo share different views, yet shows similiar goals kinda makes sense with their character.
Orihime does not want to fight so her power manifest as mostly supportive due to her lacking killing intent. Similiar to chad his powers stem from desire to protect rather than kill and he develops his offensive power later in series out of nescessity, while ichigo not only born with external power sources matches the world of bleach with killing intent while still havibg the desire to protect his friends as orihime and chad do.
Until a year or two ago i'd never finished the series. Watching an episode at a time and having year long filler arcs inserted into it at random that seemed to dumb down the characters irritated me. Skipping those and watching the series as a whole i actually really liked orihime. She might not be strong in the battlefield but she has some major internal strength and helped to compliment ichigo who just fell apart when his hollow started to take over but literally rips himself apart to protect his loved ones. I actually didn't like soifon as much the first time. I felt shebwas really childish with kisuke but after the turn back the pengelum arc i can how she felt so betrayed and it made her cut herself off from people
My cat's name is Orihime and it's her birthday today! Thanks for the great video!
I have always loved Orihime since I got into Bleach and I'm so glad to see more people finally changing their opinions about her as she used to get massive, absolutely unnecessary hate back in the day.
Orihime's strength was never physical, raw Power like with Ichigo and others. Her strength was her kindness and compassion, because emotional strength is just as meaningful and valuable as physical strength. Sure, she had her moments when she showed emotional weakness, but so did other characters as well (not to mention she was literally 15-16 years old), and I think those moments showing her moments of emotional weakness are made to mirror other characters showing lack of physical strength that they then overcome.
As a girl myself, as much as I adore physically strong, kick-ass female characters, it annoys me that so often people portray "strong female characters" as physically strong fighters. It feels like they only value physical strength and see emotional strength as less meaningful or "not real strength". We barely get characters like Orihime who are strong without being fighters, and it's annoying as it feels so toxic way of thinking that only strength that matters or makes one strong is raw, physical power.
Another thing I honestly never got about people hating on Orihime was them calling her damsel in distress when other characters like Rukia were in pinch or need of saving just as often, if not more. Sure, Arrancar arc took longer than Soul Society arc, but it doesn't change the fact Rukia was just as (in my personal opinion even more) hopeless than Orihime was during her own rescue arc. Heck, Rukia was basically useless until Arrancar arc as she barely got anything done by herself thanks to losing her powers. Not to mention, even when she was kidnapped (or rather, threatened to join Aizen), instead of just moping around like Rukia did during Soul Society arc, Orihime actually had made plan of her own to save everyone. Would her plan have ever worked? Likely not, but she was still extremely brave to go to enemy's stronghold and come up with plan of her own to not only save herself but all her friends as well.
I'm in no way saying Rukia is bad character, I do like her, but looking back at the series, it's just baffling to me how fans praised her and bad-mouthed Orihime when their time to shine (and not) in series is pretty much the same. I honestly think Orihime is objectively better character than Rukia as she shows unique emotional strength and compassion we rarely get to see in shounen. Easily one of the best (if not The Best) female main characters in shounen.
Rukia was constantly saved by Ichigo, Renji and Byakuya despite being a trained combatant yet people don’t call her a damsel
the hate towards Orihime was so unjustified
@@FruityHachi exactly! Rukia was even more in need of saving/protection most of the time. Not to mention how people always complained that "Orihime was always just repeating Ichigo's name in the background" as if Rukia's dialogue wasn't 90% "Ichigo", "Renji" or "nii-sama" (or even "Kaien-dono") depending on who was on screen at the time.
I used to be big Rukia fan as a kid but I never disliked Orihime nor understood why people did so when Rukia wasn't any "better" either.
Ironically, I think a lot of the hate came from the shippers. I think during the time Bleach was week to week, it created a nasty hate-Orihime inertia, which was so unjustified. Honestly, the anime studio was no better adding fuel to the fire for the fans. Even Kubo complained about the way the studio treated his manga and some of the characters (particularly Orihime's portrayal in the anime). But now that the pairs that are meant to be, are canon, everything has settled down. It's nice to get people appreciating Orihime, solely as a character for who she is. She's always been my favorite!
It's somewhat sad and ironic that many of the IchiRuki shippers hated Orihime, when in the actual material, Rukia and Orihime are extremely close friends. Orihime was in the first row for Renji and Rukia's wedding in the light novel. And I'm sure Rukia was in the same position for Orihime and Ichigo's wedding. I love their friendship!
Orihime's lack of killing intent definitely is a talent. Even though it is needed for her Koten Zanshun to be fully effective, She redeems her on Fullbring Arc using Shiten Kosshun with both defense and offense.. But hoping really to get a 5 and 6 petal attack.. Since we have 1(KoZa), 2(SoKis), 3(SanKes) and 4(ShiKos).. Awaiting for more abilities from her still..
I love her character I do wish she had more battle resolve and more feats for sure. I do t like that she was essentially retconned to be a full bringer though when it’s clear she’s more along the lines of a vizard. I think we should’ve got moment with her and rukia training during the tybw arc. It would’ve been a great call back to rukia helping orihime train when she felt like she was powerless .
I hope that like her kid in the future is putting danger to a point where she activates her killing intense because it says that her ability get stronger with the more killing and 10 so if she's actually worried about her child cuz this is you know a time skip and as a mother should get something done in the hell Ark
i liked Orihime from the start, she felt the most human and admired her level of empathy
wished she had better lines though to really do her character justice
I have an idea for a video you could make. It would be about everything you hope to see from the TYBW anime, whether thats things they add on to from the manga, things they take away from in the manga, or they just add on entirely new things. And it can be about anything in it, for example me, I want to see more interaction and talking between characters, and also just add interactions between characters who never saw each other such as Toshiro and Isshin or something. You could also do this for things you are hoping to see in the hell arc in the manga.
I would have loved it if Orihime handed off Tsubaki to Tatsuki. Both of those characters are entirely lost after the Soul Society arc. It would be nice to see those two hotheads grow with each other, and she and Orihime could have a sword and shield dynamic.
I legit didn't even notice her pins got larger in TYBW til watching this video was there a reason for that i.e a sign of her growth or upgrade?
Wow, this definitely changed my perspective
I loved this video! Orihime is my favorite character of Bleach and i dont understand the hate about her! Sorry my English, i'm from Brazil!
Shes not there to be a damsel.
Shes there for rule 34 fan art
I think if she wants to be an offensive player, she needs some sort of killing intent. There was a whole lecture from Kisuke telling Ichigo that “when you attack, *kill*” right around the Soul Society arc. Nothing highlights that more than how nerfed Orihime’s Tsubaki is whenever she tries to attack anyone more aware than a hollow.
However, if she wants to be a defensive fighter, her Soten Kishun and Santen Keshun are second to none of her mind is in the right place. She could put up the best shields to allow for a momentary reprieve for an ally who can then come around and do a big strike.
I have always loved orihime, she might be a simp, but her determination and will to protect despite being weak in combat is what I like about her the most. She is living the toughest life among all of the Karakura characters but still keeps on smiling, great character, dont like it when she screams, but love her
She isnt a simp
I wish she had more moments with Hachi cuse their powers are similar. I hoped that he could teach her some technique before TYBW. Her support role could be something that could be highly developed instead of focusing her on taking the route to killing.
*looking at Chad*
Yeah, I think Orihime picked the better specialization.
No one besides yoruichi , rukia , Rangiku and Hachi really embraced orihime still being a fighter and we’re even willing to help train her. That was always my qualm, she could’ve been a capable fighter without wanting to kill.
I think people judge her too much. I dont see people saying Kenpachi is useless because he can't use Kido or Heal others.
I find that Ikkaku Madarame not wanting to reveal his Bankai worst or the fact Yumichika Ayasegawa could been a better fighter, if he wasnt in 11 division. As long he is fighting with an ally, i can't fight at 100%
Her role is to be the Healer. And that is a role that most character in Bleach can't do. And she is probably the best healer. Since she doesnt Heal but reject events on a target.
It's like she ever healed someone or refuse to kill someone and made the foe killing an important character or contribute to a loosing sistuation.
Sure could Kubo have done something with Shun Shun Rikka a bit more? Probably.
I could see more formations like "I will heal my allies and deal damage equal to the damage that you dealt back to you." or "A shield that heals my allies and protect them equal to damage healed during shield." techniques. Maybe we could see her restore someone or a object to their prime form.
Maybe she could be involve in Final Battle with Ichigo vs Aizen where she assist Ichigo by destroying/separated the Hōgyoku from Aizen.
The thing whit Orihime is, the first hollow she ever see is her brother and after him see she is sufering him "killed it self to protect she, after this is rescue rukia arc and again the enemy is kind to her, in the arrancar arc the enemys again show kindness to her, in the fullbring arc she is completely lost because "friends" is fighting, but i think if Orihime use her full potential she basicaly is invencible.
I know he's an obscure side character, but could you talk about Eikichiro Saido? The Stealth Force Member that first came to bring Rukia back to the Soul Society?
@@maciejwucow1563 i wouldnt be against him going over stuff from the filler personally, they dont get talked about at all, and some of them are actually really interesting
Hi Mr. Tommo, do you have an answer to these questions: 1. What will happened to all non-Japanese human when they die in Bleach universe? 2. Why are all (I think) of the shinigami Japanese? 3. Do Shinigami perform their duties outside of Japan? Thanks in advance.
You need to talk about the SAFWY version of Yoruichi, mostly about the zampakutou she wears
I've always felt that Orihime's powers should not have been prevented by Ywach. She was done dirty by Kubo in that moment when she couldn't fix Ichigo's sword. Her powers are literally above the power of a god. She was absolutely strong enough to do it. But nooooo, we needed Tsukushima to help her. 🙄As someone who loved her from the start, who felt her pain when her beloved DIED in front of her (seriously, screw EVERY SINGLE PERSON who complained about her reactions in the Lust arc), who was THRILLED to see HER, and her ALONE, with Ichigo in the FINAL BATTLE... well it was just so frustrating!!
Orihime's powers were always extremely interesting and useful. People were just mad she wasn't secretly insane like Unohana. The power to reject anything? Like time? Like a place? Like a PERSON??? We are LUCKY she's such a genuinely good, empathetic person! She was abused as a toddler and lives alone; she could have easily hardened her heart and become cruel.
Thank you for such a positive analysis of her character and her arc. I am always trying to find people who see past others' mockery of her pain and appreciate her for herself.
The thing is her power depends on her will power and state of mind. It is fitting because during that time when Ichigo's blade was destroyed she lost her will in some degree.
