Thanks. I am considering it for next year. I’m some of my recent videos I hunted over it in some public draw blinds the state outs out and it looks good.
You should add some wood duck boxes. I’ve done this at my place and it’s helping attract more and more wood ducks. I really like the rice you planted. Would be nice to see how your did it. The arrow head you point out or wild potatoes is very interesting. I’ve never seen that before.
Hi Wave, thanks for being the first commenter on my channel! I did plan to put out some wood duck boxes last year but never got around to it. I will this year. There is a lot of creek frontage on this property as well as some river frontage on the Tar River. Plenty of places to put them. We did see some woodies flying to roost last weekend so they are staying here all year round. Are you familiar with the mallard hen houses that Delta Waterfowl has come up with? They are seeing much higher nest success with these in the prairies. I had a pair of mallards in the same spot on the creek up until the first of July. Since the drake was still with the hen I doubt they had a nest but I am going to put one of those out next year in the place I was spotting them. For the rice, I simply broadcasted in in about 3-4 inches of water, let it sit for two days and then drained it. Next year, I will capture more of the planting process. I didn't start the channel until it was already planted this year. There was a lot of competition from other vegetation but where there was not, the rice came up nicely. You can also soak it for two days and then throw it on a mud flat with good success. Here is a link to a video by another guy in central NC, @yellowlab247 NC Outdoors that planted rice this year. He used the soak method. ua-cam.com/video/y3qaH-QrKWU/v-deo.html
@fowlplayoutdoors68 the only I've been able to tell is once the chufe is mature the chufa will have many more seeds that are more yellow in color with a much better sent. Chufa are originally from Spain also I think.
@bobbywatts222 ok cool. I have a buddy who’s dad is from Spain so maybe he can come over and talk to it and ask. lol. Just kidding. Thanks for watching and all the feedback.
I haven't tried it yet but I am considering it for next year. From what I understand it makes better heads the Japanese and may last in the water longer. Wasn't sure how it handled being in water (browntop does NOT like it) so thanks for that tip!
Good video, we are in n.e. Ohio and finally got our duck hole opened this late summer, hopefully we are gonna try Japanese millet and rice but are really unsure when to plant….any ideas? Thanks
Hey Ron, thanks for watching and glad you got your duck hole opened. Its definitely too late to plant anything for this season. I'm working on my own guidelines for when to plant next year. First, consider that rice takes about 90 days to mature and Jap millet takes about 60. So, at a minimum you want them to sprout that far ahead of your first frost in the fall. And you also need to be after the last frost of the spring. Beyond that, I want it to mature maybe 3-4 weeks before I want to hunt it so I can flood it and give the ducks time to find it by opening day. I may not do Jap millet next year. I knew it had a much shorter "shelf life" after it matures but it seems to go really fast. This is my first attempt at rice, and so far I love it. If you can flood the hole in the spring, it is easy to sew seed in a few inches of water and then drain it after a couple of days. Rice stays viable as a food source much longer than millet. Next year I will also do more prep work so the ground is better and the rice has less competition. For this season, you may be good with natural food. Check out my "Duck Groceries" epsisode, ua-cam.com/video/xSmhKk2XlBY/v-deo.html, when I give an overview of what I have. If it is not flooded yet, you can rent a walk behind brush mower and knock it down before you flood it to spread the seed and open it up a bit. I did that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/MW3Q_ShvAzQ/v-deo.html I think Home Depot rents them but so do many local equipment rental places. Hope you have a great season! Bruce
@@fowlplayoutdoors68 thanks Bruce for the info, we have been feeding shell corn for a few weeks but will be done this weekend so we are legal to hunt. I’m thinking just millet next year for now…thanks again and great hunting to you all 👍
You may want to check out chiwapa millet. It's a 120 day millet. Grows tall and thick. No more than 6lbs per ac

All sedges have a triangle shaped base at the stems base
Thanks!
Chufa is different than yellow nut sedge. I understand ducks will feed on yellow nut sedge, but chufa is much better
Interesting. I’ve seen lots of resources call them the same. How do you tell the difference?

chufa is a variation(Cyperus esculentus variety sativus) of the yellow nutsedge(Cyperus esculentus).
Have your ever tried golden millet. It grows fast and will even grow in water.
