A Chaos flower bed full of old seeds would be so beautiful and fun to see what grows!!
For science! Lol
I did chaos flowers this year and they are sprouting really well!
Love this idea!
Me too ❤
Yes do it
We save our egg shells. I grind them up in the blender to a fine powder and add a handful of that to the hole I have dug for my tomato plants
And you can just mix up some powdered milk, and pour into the hole. This is what I do. Some people grind up “Tumms” . They just want the calcium !!
I do this too. It really helped my peppers when they weren’t fruiting.
I can’t wait to see what eggplant recipes you tried this year. A good eggplant recipe is slice round slices put tomatoe sauce and Parmesan cheese on it and put on grill.
I've heard that the slugs don't like the shells either.
@@carolynmills513 crushed, not powdered though. Cause the sharp edges are the trick.
Funny story, when I was about 9 my mother had planted a small garden including an eggplant. One day I was in the garden and saw a big eggplant. All excited I ran to my mother to tell her we had the biggest plum in the world in our garden. LOL!
Becky, your peppers are called cho-dee-share-doe (Txorixero) and the other is sweet mor-oo-ga, which is a scorpion pepper.
I hope you don't mind me helping you with pronunciation. My husband is dyslexic and I tend to help him with words and spelling a lot. In our home, I do all the spelling/writing, and he does all the math and computers! :)
I am not sure if you have seen gorilla carts but they literally transformed my garden work compared to a wheelbarrow. They have 4 wheels and a dump feature. My husband kept suggesting one and I kept saying my wheelbarrow was fine. I finally relented and literally every time I use it, it makes me happy.
I also thought of them when I saw her trying to pull out her wheelbarrow from the grow room and it looked like it was going to tip over.
I agree with you! Gorilla Carts make my life so much easier. I DO NOT MISS my old wheelbarrow. :)
Wheelbarrows have a use but to carry flat things, for sure a cart (flat one, fabric one, gorillanbrand whatever)
I love my Gorilla Cart! So much lighter to pull 6 bags of mulch than to push 5.
Gorilla carts are a God send in the garden!!
Just a FYI, it takes years for egg shell to leach calcium into the soil. I recently found a recipe in which you grind up egg shells, lots of them, then bake and grind them up. Place in a bucket and let leach 10 days. Strain off and use one ounce to a gallon of water. Spray on leaves, helps with end rot too.
All the experiments I've seen with that egg trick and other tricks like the fish show that it doesn't actually help, but it can hinder the growth of plants because since it's not broken down into the useasble minerals for the plant, it actually takes up nutrients like nitrogen to break/compost down.
I would be interested to know who else has done an experiment on this. Kevin at Epic did last year, but I believe the egg was barely any different from the control tomato for him.
I have one that I forgot this year but it’s a different variety, so it’ll be hard to say whether it makes a difference.
Yes I have heard that so this year I am experimenting without the egg to see if it makes a difference. We don't have chickens so it saves me buying eggs but I did put some organic tomato fertilizer in the hole.
I have done a side-by-side with 12 plants; six received an egg, six went without. The ones that received an egg actually did slightly produce worse. The eggs have to break down first (or weather) to become bioavailable. For eggshells, it takes about 2 years.
The "theory" behind putting an egg in the hole is that blossom end rot is typically caused by a calcium deficiency and the thought that egg shells are made of calcium. While it's true, raw egg shells calcium takes a LONG time to break down and be available for the plant/fruit. I save the shells, bake them and crush finely. The baking converts the hard-to-use calcium in the shells to a more-easily-used form and finely crushing makes the pieces small enough to break down more quickly.
@@lisawallace3124 I understand the "theory" or hypothesis behind it, but it doesn't have the science to back it up. If anything it has more science against it actually working.
I wonder if your mom and mother in law would host us each for a garden tour of their home gardens. They both shared their kitchens with us so lovingly, and I bet their gardens are just as great
Your not the only one getting things out late! We have had so much rain, the yard is a swamp; and there’s lots of rain in the forecast for the next two weeks. Good luck getting everything out.
Becky, txoricero, you might find it as choricero. Is a pepper tipical from de Basque Country in the north of Spain. Is a pepper that you collect when it is red, then you hang them tied with some cord and leave to dry. Once it is dried you can storage them, and when you want to use them you put them in hot water for about half an hour to rehydrate and then with the help of a spoon you take put the "meat" of the pepper, discarding the skin.
You can use pimiento choricero / txoricero in many steps typical from the north of Spain:
Patatas a la riojana (stew of potatoes and chorizo, this pepper and pimentón (similar to paprika)
Marmitako (stew tuna with potatoes and peppers)
Bacalao a la vizcaína (cod in a sauce made with onions and this pepper)
Search for its uses as pimiento choricero, is more usual to find it written this way.
That 6:30 in the morning view of your yard is everything❤
Hi Becky! Love your garden videos. You have inspired me. I have grown medicinal herbs for years but those are pretty easy. I started my first vegetable garden at 53 this year.
I was always taught that when you make the hole to plant, put water in it before you put the plant
We put Epsom salt in the soil with our tomatoes. Magnesium is something our soil lacks.
Hi Becky friends!!
Let’s get plant’n 😊
😥june is winter in Australia, I'm still picking Tomatoes mid May ! Happy Gardening
Hi, hoping you are having a good week!
With the eggplant you can make a wonderful Middle Eastern called Babaganoosh. It is a beautiful creamy , Smokey dip. Very yummy served with warm flatbread/pittas.
Another dish is mousaka made with ground beef and white bechamel sauce, layered with mousaka similar to lasagna
Even eggplant parmigiana is healthy.
Don't forget to plant marigolds with your tomatoes. ❤
And Basil. Keep away the dreaded hornworm!
Yes, basil to confuse the hornworms with their smell so they don’t land on your tomatoes.
Hi Becky, my first tomatoes ever have started fruiting! They're currently marble sized! Thanks for inspiring me to start gardening!
I did my first last year and couldn’t believe the sweetness of mine compared to store bought. ☺️
Hi Becky. It's so nice to see you planting again. I'm so happy for this planting season❤👍
Becky you need to really grind up the washed out eggshells before you add them to the tomato and pepper holes. It takes too long for the shells to decompose before the calcium is available to the plants
Good advice, I’ve heard that also
Becky, I just watched a video on a lady baking her egg shells and crunching them up to put around her garden plants. She said that it's to add calcium to the soil
I do that aLL year long and then when I plant tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and pumpkins I put it in the holes I plant in, cover it with an inch or two of if soil and then plant. I get beautiful plants, no blossom end rot. You don't need the whole egg, just the ground up shell
Becky talk to your plants just like you would to your dogs. You will be surprised at how well they will respond .... grow, grow, grow!
My favorite part of my morning is telling my plants I'm proud of them! 🤣. Makes thinning them so hard though. They really do turn into my babies!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Becky! I hope you get to read this, I live in the PNW too, Seattle area. Just spreading on the knowledge that this year we have switched to a hotter growing zone. I used to be 8b, now I am 9A!!! So things are different than they used to be! Kind of exciting for gardening.
Ours changed too and I’m in the Midwest. The “discussions” with my mom have been fun, lol. She keeps saying too early 😂. 🤷🏼♀️. Everything is an experiment right?
Tomatoes do like calcium but never heard of using a whole egg. I save my egg shells over winter and crush them to powder and mix in the soil with the other nutrients when I plant them. Egg shells are all calcium.
You should get a wagon, the gorilla one with the dump bed.
I always just kept the egg shells. I dry them good then run them through the blender
Good afternoon, friend! The notification of this video actually interrupted my watching your breakfast meal prep video! 😂
😂😂😂
eggs are full of calcium and as it rots it produces Sulphur which tomatoes love all that. Most folks just lightly crack the egg and barry it when planting for better sulphur production. I just grind my egg shells and add sulphur along with tomato food. Happy Gardening
I am amazed at the beauty of the views that you have every time I watch your videos
It's such a beautiful piece of land! 😍
Love slicing eggplant, dipping in egg, and either flour or cornmeal and frying in oil. YUM. Love summertime
If you grill any, one thing I like to do is; slice small eggplant, or zucchini, and a small tomato. Brush the bottom of the eggplant or zuchinni, place a tomato on top. Cover with shredded Parmesan cheese, and a little black pepper. Grill until the bottom is golden, and the cheese is also. YUM!!
these both sound so good!
You can prune the tops of indeterminate tomatoes; learned this a few weeks ago; plan to do so this season.
Yea! Becky video! Have a wonderful day, Sweet Friend!
Hi Becky!! So good to see you today!!
All I could think of in the beggining is that becky is going to attempt to grow coffee cups again lol
Anyone else bought that compost from fort v or whatever that becky uses and didn't really love it? mine had rocks and metallic pieces in it. Not a huge fan for $25 bucks a bag.
I have always used crushed egg shells w/ my tomatoes. Last year I used the whole egg, the next morning every tomato plant had been uprooted by some critter who went after the egg. A few of my plants were destroyed but I was able to replant most of them. This year it's back to crushed eggshells for me.
The temperature thing, I have googled pepper plant low tolerance I think 7 times this year alone. Im happy you get to be planting.
Becky double check on putting sweet potato slips with your tomatoes, I recently researched those two together and found it may not be a good idea.
Hi Becky ❤, hi friends 👋
I love seeing what you plant in your GreenStalks! Can't wait to watch them grow 💚
I absolutely love your videos Becky, and cant wait for a new episode to come, but I do miss seeing the girls❤
Am i the only one who misses those mixed videos?? A little bit of gardening, some cooking, preserving ..... ???
She does them occasionally! I'm sure they're coming because preservation is right around the corner!
@@rainwaterrefugehomestead2267 I hope so 😍
egg is probaby calcium for the tomatoes..just guessing! GIRL..I made your homemade lasagna bolognese GIRL..yum. I did whole wheat pasta..I do need to buy the attachement for the kitchen aid..I got a workout rolling the dough out!! BUT loved it so much!! It will be a regular now in my house!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
I follow another channel that runs a market farm and they said the most important thing for peppers and tomatoes was to make sure the ground was warm enough, that ground temperature is very important. I love their channel as there's currently 4 generations working there and they share a lot of helpful tips.
The veggie boys .ilove that channel too
Please share the channel
Happy planting to all that are planting veggies, fruits, herbs, and beautiful flowers + plants, may your harvest be of abundance ❤
Unfortunately the egg shells don't break down to give the plants the calcium that they need. You'll still need to supplement with calcium to keep the plants healthy. Their are a lot of good videos on how to make eggshell calcium usable for plants.
Eggplant is one of my favorite things to eat. I grew up with them. Sooo delicious. Many wonderful recipes out there. Hope you love them as much as I do.
Totally understand that you don't want your little guy on camera...but it is nice to see that there is evidence that you have a wee one. (water table on the patio & a misplaced rubber fish on the fence). :)
I'm glad to see she kept all his private information & his image off the internet. It's crazy seeing people put every piece of their child's info online when they are born and the photo of them 😢.
Yesss It was exciting!! Like "there is a toy" 😂 like hidden Mickeys at WDW 😂😂
I can't understand,that she doesn't even mention him .
She does when she says my family and that’s good enough for me .
Nice work Becky! 🙂👍 When you're done planting, pressure washing the concrete on your terrasse will revive its color.
Can't wait to see your garden in full bloom! We planted on good Friday and so far ive harvested basil, 3 jalapeno peppers and 2 strawberries. I credit you Becky for giving me the courage to try again after failing miserably in the past. ❤❤❤
13:42 Jess from Roots and Refuge has done that with eggs since 2014
I think you will love Eggplant. Use a slice of Eggplant, dredged in Panko and fried (or air fried). Top with Marinara and Mozzerella then bubble the cheese under the broiler. So super yummy!!
The garden looks great, it will be no time at all and you will be harvesting
Yesss!!! We're gardening today🎉❤
My fav greenhouse owner told me years ago to + powdered milk to the prepared hole of each tomato. The calcium prevents blossom end rot. It works!
Fast acting calcium I guess
I love your gardening videos
Love your beautiful garden 😃
I'm glad you are planning a pineapple tomato. Also plant a Jimmy Nardello pepper. It's an Italian sweet frying pepper 🌶 absolutely delicious!
For your cherry tomatoes, you could plant them in pots on your patio or in your herb garden and have them close to your kitchen. It puts the.close so you can just step outm and pick them for a salad or quick snack. I used to plant mine in pots on my deck along with some giant strawberries and ground cherries. They looked great and were delish!
Most of our seedlings died for the second time😢 but what managed to survive got put out in the raised beds this morning. Good to see you ❤😊
I can so relate. Our beautiful seedlings were in an accident on the way home to Washington from Palm Desert. We were traveling in our RV. Only 7 out 72 starts managed to survive. They are planted and doing well. My husband took a curve too fast and sent all the plants flying. 😢
Your garden design sure worked out well and what an amazing job those guys did with the installation!!!
It is looking beautiful by you. Enjoy the sunshine.
I'm anxious to see your garden at the end of July!!!!
Ina Garten had a wonderful eggplant gratin recipe and you can never go wrong with eggplant parmesan. I love eggplant, so many great recipes for their use! Going to be so much fun watching your garden this year with all the flowers!❤
I was talking to someone at the farmers market and they told me that corn likes to grow with a lot of corn. So he suggested that when you plant corn you plant a lot of it. And also I remember my aunt telling me that when she lived up near Canada she had to start her corn indoor and then transfer it into the garden.
I was told a minimum of three rows with five plants Per row. Otherwise they will not pollinate each other.
It’s also important to plant corn in a block rather than a long row. This facilitates pollination.
Yes, you want to plant corn in blocks vs rows so they can pollinate properly.
Love all the planting videos:). Not sure if you’ve grown lemongrass before but it gets big like 3-4 feet tall and wide so it might do better in the barrel planter you have than in the green stalk. I grew it for the first time last year and had no idea it got that big lol
I love that you’re planting the herb GreenStalk close to the kitchen. Just a heads up - lemongrass will grow 3’-5’ tall and you harvest it like rhubarb, so you might want to move that to a separate pot rather than the Greenstalk.
I was taught when placing a dead fish or whole eggs, always cover them with garden lime before placing your vegetable in the hole. This will cover the smell/odor and prevent animals from trying to get to the fish and egg.
My Dad would let the fish decompose all fall into spring then plant. It worked out well. Coffee grounds and fireplace ash at the same time. Our garden was awesome!!!
Happy Mother's Day.
Tarragon can get huge and can go perennial. Even in Colorado, I had one last and it became a bush!
Ají is pronounced ah-Hee with emphasis on the second syllable. It's a spanish word for a small chili pepper.
Ooo....I see a blossom on your pepper plant! So exciting! Happy planting day!😊❤
I save and use eggshells. The extra calcium is great.
Beautiful homestead guys. 🙂
Hi Becky! Wheres the side-by-side you guys bought? Why don't you use it to move all the soil, starts, etc? Wouldn't that be so much easier, and why you made your paths so wide? So you could drive it? Or did you sell it?
Can you make a video on your drip system for your raised beds.
That's what I've been wondering 🤔. Why not use it
Happy Birthday Becky!! Have a great weekend with your family!!
Hi Becky, I was on the wrong video. I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day this weekend and I’m watching you right now. Can we please see the chickens I miss the chickens. We haven’t seen them in a long time.
Garden shows ive watched , also said basil is excellant growing with tomatoes!
i started pineapple tomato seeds, Cherokee, and yellow pear. I also planted purple and green tomatillos.
Hi Becky. I am really enjoying your channel and learning a great deal. Please add the eggs to your tomatoes. I don't know if this was already mentioned but the shells prevent blossom rot. Experience speaking here.
I just read...on your channel...that the eggs will help peppers. I am going to try that this year. I need the help. Thanks again!
You would actually be better off adding calcium in the hole or side dressed. It takes years for the egg shell to break down and provide calcium. Eggs would serve more purpose as breakfast than wasted in the ground. 🙂
I save all of my egg shells and then grind them into powder and put a good couple tablespoons or so in each hole when I plant tomatoes or peppers
Since y’all are coffee drinkers, you should look up how you can use the used coffee grounds. My grandfather use to save his and would use them in his garden. I don’t, off hand, remember what he would use it for.
Wow! You got so much done! Everything looks great. I was very excited to see your Green Stalk because I have one, too.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums. Would love to see all your lovely outdoor areas not just the vegetable garden. 😊❤
Jess from Roots and Refuge is your egg source. You look great and very busy!
If someone has as many raised beds as Becky, why would you mix your beds vs keeping one for peppers, one for tomatoes, one for potatoes, one for flowers, potatoes, etc?
I’m a fan of mono-cropping for some things, but the benefit would be if one bed gets attacked or does not do well (soil issue or nutrient deficiency), you don’t have all of a specific crop in the bed to fail. It’s somewhat ensuring the harvest. Intercropping also makes the beds look pretty. And lastly some plants do need other plants to minimize pests.
Hi Becky! I’ve been experimenting with different paste tomato varieties and have found my FAVORITE one is Grand Marshall. They are a big apple style and are fantastic!
Get some seeds for 2025, you won’t be disappointed!!!
Becky, do you eat okra? We eat it fried (delicious), stewed with tomatoes, in gumbos, and pickled in the south. The pickled ones are also good in Bloody Marys. It is so much fun to grow.
Also, I think you will enjoy growing eggplants. We fry it like we do fried green tomatoes.
Love your vids! My 3rd year watching!❤️
I love fried okra!!!
I started lots of eggplants this year. Breaded and pan fried...they taste like hot buttered bread. Harvest fruits before they get too big and full of seed. The individual plants get massive. The black beauty have thorns around the stems.
It is so interesting that you plant tomatoes and Snapdragons at the same time. Yes, Jess from Roots and refuge is the inspiration for an egg-in-the hole. Here, in Manteca Ca., my Snapdragons, Violas and Calendulla are winding down as it is too hot now...80's. Lovely garden video ...AND, YAY for no more fabric in the beds....You grow girl, freely .
Hi Becky, I have also found hot peppers easier to grow for some reason! Amazing to see the garden being planted and things growing! 👨🌾
Thankyou becki for all you do
Just wondering, I can understand growing all the starts of flowers to plant out in your landscape, but if I had all those beautiful raised beds they would be full of food that my family and I could consume. Jmo
She has plenty of food for her family of 3, and the flowers make her happy.
Also the flowers attract the pollinators
You need flowers to attract the pollinators to pollinate your food
Becky, would you say that one saves money planting your own veggies and herbs, or is it more about having fresh ingredients you know where they come from? I love gardening and growing things, but scared I end up spending more than just buying from the local farmers
Hi Becky I’ve read that planting tomatoes and sweet potatoes will compete for the same nutrients and they also share the same diseases, hopefully you don’t have that issue but just a thought 😊
Hi Becky. The frost is great for breaking down the spent compost from the summer pots. Love watching your videos 😊
Love your garden and I can't wait to see what it looks like when fully grown😊
The egg yolk adds protein and the shell adds calcium so its a winner all around.
Those snap dragons are going to be so beautiful. I can't wait to get mine out at the end of May.
I've taken a leaf out of your book Becky and put my strawberries and herbs in vertical growing stacks. These are going nearer the house so I'll get more use from them. Have a lovely birthday.🌻💐🍷
Wow! Your garden is looking amazing! I love the GreenStalk planters! We did strawberries in them last year and they did well! Can't wait to see it grow and what your harvest will look like! ❤
Love seeing the garden. Thanks.
