It has never really occured to me until 6 minutes ago. I noticed several parallels between Todd and Gavin Harrison. 1. Otherworldly command of the instrument. 2. Very interesting playing technique-wise. 3. A sense of groove bordering on absolute. 4. Can make a plastic bucket sound like a Sonor SQ2. 5. Incredibly down-to-earth and friendly persona. Defo one of the top drummers around.
used to watch this performance as a teen and rack my brain trying to figure out how to count/play along, totally forgot about it and now almost 10 years later it finally makes sense! never realized it was a Jerry Goodman tune either, weird how interconnected stuff is in the music world. many thanks for the rhythmic inspiration and pattern-finding related headaches you gave me over the years Todd!
One of a kind and Todd’s playing is a complete masterpiece!!!!!Im just so blown away by his precision in this song, the dynamics it’s like emotion in art and I’m not trying to get all fancy with words etc I’m merely trying to put into words how incredible this was!!!If I’d played this I’d say ok I’ve reached my threshold for greatness next adventure and I mean rock clubbing or something else entirely because as a drummer how can this be topped?!?!
This is hands down my favorite drumming piece of all time. I've watched countless solos but this one still boggles my mind. The way that Todd carries his grooves over the bar and plays with the time signature just blows me away. It's all perfect, zero fills out of place, it's musical and powerful, fantastic piece.
Saw a clip of this on Drummerworld, and being STYX was one of my favorite bands as a kid, I bought the Methods & Mechanics DVD. I watched the entire thing start to finish. On the DVD Todd says this song, written by progressive violinist Jerry Goodman, is in 13/8. If you want your mind blown some more, look up Jan Hammer-Jerry Goodman. Those two played together on a record named "Oh Yeah". Incredible music! This song & the way Todd performs it is one of my favorite examples of odd-time playing ever. So fluid.
What I'm feeling is the dialectic between the joy of being able to pull off that song and the stark reality that I am not able to. In essence, I'm crying!!
What a time to be alive. Been able to see some of the best drummers in history. Todd, Neil, Gavin, Steve, Danny and many more. Todd is so fluid and has such tasty fills.
One of the most tasteful drummers in this galaxy.

Perfectly worded ,agree 100%
I also just clicked on your band, awesome double bass playing !!
Lol. You've clearly never heard of Thomas lang.
He makes these two look like learners.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 Lol. Obviously I've heard, but for the love of God, get this peepee size contest out of my face.
@drivenbyblastbeat Lol.
Not about peepee size it's about skill and Lang would outdo Todd and most others just with his feet
WOW! That performance was truly, AMAZING!!! I've never seen Todd "GET DOWN", like that! He just continues to, "take us there!" Salute!
Like Jeff Porcaro, whatever talent Todd has in music; by his years of playing and practicing he has utilized the talent to the maximum. I’m in awe.
Dude looks like he's home on a Sunday afternoon watching the ball game. I adore the ease of his fluidity.

still resonates as one of my personal favorite pieces of music. ever.
Agree. Why is it is hard to say. Drumming is obviously sublime, but that violin is crying with emotion too.

Jerry Goodman also played with the Dixie Dregs, if I'm not mistaken.
Thank you! I could NOT figure out that, DAM SIGNATURE! You have just taken the weight of the world, off my shoulders!
I love Neil Peart and imo Todd is in the same class.
What I'm feeling is the dialectic between the joy of being able to pull off that song and the stark reality that I am not able to. In essence, I'm crying!!

@@Fanis753 Lol.
Lang would annihilate Garska
Very nice song. Very well done. Who plays the violin? Reminds me of Jerry Goodman style.
👍🏻
Pat Metheny feeling :) Good job .
Il pezzo di Jerry Goodman è bellissimo, come tutto l'album Ariel. Todd però è eccezionale!!!
Uno dei miei batteristi preferiti!!!

Dude…🤙🏿🤙🏿
Clearly a drum shredding cyborg from a different dimension... ?!

Does a better drum part exsist?!Serious question!!!

🎧🍂🎩
Todd is the Steve Lukather of drummers..

A lot like Rod Morgenstine in this.
Is there anyway you could make it look hard?
