My kids were watching this ep for the first time the other day and I heard my son say to his brother - 'They found the thumb drive that looks like a save icon'. I've never felt so old.
"who's that guy. He's not a watcher!" Yup. Buffy's first watcher. I believe the movie was retconned to fit with the show, but Buffy's introduction to her powers featured several burned down school buildings, lots of dead people and.... the death of her watcher. There's a reason she behaves as she does in the pilot, and this is providing just a little more context to that ^^
@@julesreacts The TV series is basically based on Joss Whedon's first draft of the movie's screenplay, rather than the movie itself. So, you can consider the basic plot of the movie as more-or-less the same for the continuity of the TV series, just with some key detail changes. The biggest one being the burning down of the school gym, which was in the original draft but not the finished film. So, yeah, this guy that we see in this flashback is Buffy's original watcher, Merrick. Who we can safely assume met a similar fate as Donald Sutherland's Merrick in the 1992 film.
Spike is firing on all cylinders in this episode. He cracks me up. Spike: It's a big rock. Can't wait to tell all my friends. 😄 and (mockingly at Angel) Someone wasn't worrrrthy. 😆🤣
@@julesreacts Originally, Spike was going to be written out after the fire during the two-parter Kendra appeared in. I am SO glad fan popularity saved Spike from that fate, and while I won't spoil how long Spike is around for and when, every second of him here on was well worth it. Amazing portrayal by James Marsters.
When Giles reveals he has an Orb of Thesulah, he mentions that he's been using it as a paperweight. This is a reference to Passion, in which the magic shop owner tells Jenny that he usually sold the relics to tourists as New-Age paperweights. POOR Kendra Great episode and part 2 is even better.
It's funny, for all Angelus is evil, it's Dru walking into the library looking so in control and focused that always makes me shiver. She's magnificent and oh so terrifying. Great first part to this series finale. Can't wait to see your reaction to the final part.
Joss Whedon actually sought out Juliet Landau to take the role of Drusilla, after being impressed with her performance in Ed Wood. She is absolutely captivating… I can’t imagine anyone else even attempting to pull off the character.
The guy in the 1996 flashback is Merrick, Buffy's first (now deceased) watcher. He's featured in the Buffy movie, which is *kinda sorta* canon. My understanding is that the original Whedon script is canon but the movie as it eventually appeared in the theaters is not.
exactly, Joss got so mad about how they treated and changed his script that he walked off the production. The "corrected" version was later released in comic book form.
Drusilla is just the second vampire we have seen in 2 full seasons with the power to use hypnosis on people. The Master was the only other one so far. when they talked about restoring Drusilla to her full power, they really meant she had power. I don't think Angel knew that Kendra was back in town, but it didn't matter any way. Really tragic how she died, but this is the fate of all Slayers, to die a violent death. It was shocking to see none the less.
It’s a tough one, as you say, Angel/Liam is the man with a soul (granted he didn’t have the best of lifestyles pre getting vamped), Angelus is the demon that inhabits the body when Liam the man dies and the body loses the soul. The curse throws Liam and his soul back into the body, now containing the demon but the man/Liam remembers and feels responsible for everything that the demon/ Angelus has done knowing it was his body that was used. To me, Liam got a bum deal, the Gypsy curse is wrongly punishing the man with a soul/Liam , not the demon Angelus as intended. Angelus does not care about what it’s done, it does not have to worry about a moment of happiness, it’s just not in control any more, I suppose that’s it’s only suffering. Liam/Angel is being punished for the actions of the demon, we don’t blame a vehicle, we blame the driver. But all opinions are valid. Great reaction, can’t wait for next times.
Merrick was a watcher. If I recall the movie correctly, Rutger Hauer stabbed Donald Sutherland in the heart with his own stake. I believe the original plan was for Merrick to blow his own brains out before they could turn him. Certainly would've been more dramatic than, "Oh dear, look what I've done," or whatever Donald's last line was.
I love we get the first flashbacks for Angel, Darla and Dru in this two-part finale. It was so deliberately timely as a reminder that Angel was human and that the demon, Angelus, is a separate entity. We, as the audience, needed this to appreciate the contrast. Can’t wait for part two, one of the greatest Buffy episodes ❤❤
I’d forgotten how good Becoming pt. 1 is, because whenever I’m looking back at old Buffy episodes, I always find myself going directly to Becoming pt. 2 … for reasons that Jules already knows because she was about to watch it right after seeing this. Thanks for reminding me that the whole two-parter should be rewatched the next time I do so!
Becoming part 1 was a great lead into the brilliant S2 finale Becoming part 2. So much in this episode to digest. The loss of Kendra, Angel's back story being turned by Darla, and we also see Drusilla being tormented by Angelus in The Confessional. At least the floppy disk has been found, and Willow can now work her magic. We now have the climax to come, and you will not be disappointed a brilliant last episode to come. I think you can now really see how this show engrosses all reactors that enter The Buffyverse! and, S3 is a near flawless Season, even better than this!
That guy is Merrick. He was Buffy's first Watcher. He died in their battle against Lothos (Buffy's first Big Bad from the movie (non-canon) or prequel comic (canon).
12:11 That guy is Buffy's first Watcher, Merrick! The events of her freshman year in high school before the first season are loosely outline in the (not canon) Buffy film, and Merrick was her first Watcher, and the one to break the bad news to her about her powers.
12:12 that guy was actually Buffys first watcher who died before Buffy and Joyce moved to Sunnydale. You can see more of him in the Buffy movie from 1992. Where we can see the same scene at the school when Buffy was called.
I have never understood the argument about whether to bring Angel's soul back or not at the beginning of the episode. Even if he should die, trying to do that while he is a monster is SUPER dangerous, even for Buffy. Xander's argument is insane.
I love Angel, but I have to wonder is it even fair for him to have his soul back, knowing that he will be so miserable? I don't want him to die but... what kind of a life is that for him to live? Hence the curse... 😢
Both parts of this finale are incredible! I absolutely love the flashbacks, it's not only great to get more backstory (don't worry, I'd forgotten about Darla too), but it serves as a timely reminder of Angel's humanity, while further elaborating on his connection to Buffy. I've never seen the original Buffy movie, but from what I understand the guy we see with Buffy at her old high school was her first Watcher, Merrick. The movie isn't canon to the TV show, so that's an alternative look at events from the movie, with a different actor. Angel and Druisilla are both so menacing in this episode and Spike is just brilliant. Then, of course there's poor Kendra. Like you said, her being there provides a false sense of security, right up until Dru hyptpnises her. That scene of Buffy running in slow motion is one of my favourite shots of the show. Then there's that final moment when the gun gets drawn on her - I mean, what a cliffhanger! After all that she'd been through, she has to deal with the cops too. I can't wait to see what you thought of the finale Jules - it's one of the best!
Holly crap what a cliffhanger! Can't wait to see the continuation, I've always been a fan of multiple parts because I feel it dives deeper into the story. Especially with Angel, the story is awesome! Thanks so much Juliette💞Amazing episode!
I think it's why I enjoy tv series rather than movies. I get to enjoy the characters for a LONG TIME 😄 Sometimes movies just don't seem to give me enough of the goodies! Thank you, Texman. I hope you had a lovely weekend 💜😸
One thing I rarely see discussed is what a bad idea the curse was in the first place. Justice would have been them just killing Angel. The curse, to make him feel eternal suffering and unable to experience a moment of pure happiness, was greedy revenge. It's like the curse of the mummy in many tellings of that story. It might feel good to inflict that level of suffering on one who has wronged you but when the evil is restored then many more innocent people will die.
@@Vladoominatoreven as a means of vengeance, it's a pretty stupidly designed curse. The proofs is in the pudding, it literally ended up getting two more members of that family killed.
I think Buffy's logic of using the resoul spell make sense, it's kind of a "less collateral damage" thing. Like, Buffy trying to fight him, events of this episode aside, is a risk even if she thinks she can win. Him getting his soul back again essentially wins the fight before they even have to put anything at risk. They're talking about the end of all existence so every chance is worth it.
Another cliffhanger! It was interesting how this episode delved into Angel's history (how he became a vampire) and Buffy's history (how she became the slayer), definitely not a coincidence. The loss of Kendra is hard. Seeing Druscilla as a human is a strange experience. I can't believe that you're at the end of season 2 (officially with the next episode).
I loved seeing Angel when he was human! Absolutely fascinating and I'm so glad they showed that to us. He was just a normal fellow... until of course, he met Darla 🥺
One running joke I forgot when you watched this episode. Back in passions Ms calendar goes to the magic shop and purchases a thessalan orb, spirit vault for the undead, from the soon to be dead shop owner. While making the sale he talks about the health of his business and the fact there isn't much call for the orbs. In fact he sold a couple to new agers as paperweights. When Willow becomes adamant about trying to cast the spell to restore Angel's soul she says we have to find a Thessalan Orb. Giles immediately pipes up . Oh I've got one, I use it as a paper weight. So this unlikely coincidence prevents the team from having to go on some sort of long mission to find an orb and moves the plot quickly forward with a joke and a set-up from four episodes ago. It is a nice plot short hand that is funny and keeps things moving.
This along with the second part are in my top list of Buffy episodes (I put both parts together) whether it's to do with the flashbacks, the music and the twists this is one of the episodes I watch if I get in the mood to watch Buffy. As much as I love Kendra I do feel her death was necessary to show the audience how dangerous Drucilla really is when she is at full strength combined with her 'sight' ability which showed the monster that Angelus created over a century before.
I had watched Buffy here and there now and then but I had seen maybe four or five episodes that came across my screen at some time or other. A friend strongly recommended the show. One Canada day the Sci-fi channel showed a day long ten best episodes and I sat down to watch. I think the third and fourth episodes they showed were Becoming Part 1 and 2. i was never taken with the whole Angel-Buffy romance or the angelus story arc, but when I watched this episode I was impressed. It has a Grimm fairy tale feel to it. The whole immortal-mortal, living undead , vampire vampire slayer romance seems obviously impossible from the outside but here is a tale of the exactly wrong people ( with super powers ) falling for each other. Throw in a nice gypsy curse and the fact that the attractive romantic lead is also just an horrific villain and will become a villain again if he is ever happy.Fairy tale. I really enjoyed this resolution of Season two. we see some of our characters like Spike at their best and others like Xander at their worst. Hero Spike is still a villain though and villain Xander is still a hero. There are very few one note characters in all this I've liked Spike in the past because he does feel love and when you least expect it he will honour a deal. Much more interesting than twirling mustaches tie you to the train tracks evil. You did hit the nail on the head with what Spike was going to do three or four episodes ago. I liked the character of Whistler. There is a character , doyle, in the Angel series which feels like another version of this guy. The stink guy. Lot of very good back story on Angel and Darla and Drusilla. Love Spike "Someone wasn't Worthy." Mr Pointy
Spike is one of my favourite characters now! He really came through at the end there, but only just enough 😅 he didn't really do the teaming up that I thought he might, but it was good enough!
Yes he teamed up but for his own selfish monstrous reasons. Once that was done he was gone. Though first time watching I thought concern for the slayer and hate of angelus might have been enough to get him to intervene. However it all let the Hero , Buffy, save herself. @@julesreacts
Yes, the whole Angel/Angelus thing is messy. It took me awhile (too long really) to wrap my head around Angel being Angelus with a conscience: Liam's soul. That, in the Buffyverse, the soul is the conscience. Liam is burdened with the memories of Angelus' actions while Angelus is burdened with Liam's conscience. The two are not separate entities inhabiting a single body so much as an integration of the two. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
It really hurts the old brain to think about it too much 😅 I don't know if there will ever be a happy outcome for them both, but I can only hope 💜 have a lovely weekend, Becca!
I love all the flashbacks in this episode and it's all setup for the finale now. I hope you had the tissues handy!!! Sad to see that kendra was brought back just to get killed off. RIP Kendra
111 pages left in the book of Buffy and we have loved Jules acceptance of the series we love. When you love a show, you want people you respect to love it as well and we are blessed to be in this together.
Angel didn't do anything, when Angel was turned in to a vampire he died and a demon was born Angelus has the same memories but he is not Angel. When Angelus was cursed Angel's soul/essence/being was returned to his now dead vampire body not knowing where he was, then all of the memories of what Angelus did came flooding back. Angelus was locked away trapped unable to kill/feed and when Angel lost his soul in episode 14 Angel died a second time and Angelus was free and back in control.
15:27 He's not wrong, this is not the first or last time she is misdirected, leaving someone/something vulnerable. Admittedly Kendra should have been enough to keep the others safe.
This is one of if not my favourite episodes of TV ever. I love how we got to see several events from the past from Angel getting turned then Drusilla's torture, the curse, Buffy becoming the Slayer. The title of this two-parter is perfect since there's a lot of becoming going on. Can't wait for the second part which is amazing. One thing about this first part. I have always seen people side with Buffy and I get it I'm a fan of Buffy and Angel's relationship but Xander is 100% unequivocally right.
Xander's role on the show is interesting. It's easy to love Willow but it wouldn't get us anywhere if all of the characters agreed with Buffy all the time. And many times I've seen fans express that they agree with what Xander is saying but dislike how he's saying it, like that's the important part. His points are valid during the confrontation scene of this episode too, especialy for someone that doesn't see Angel and Angelus as two different people, but using the spell is tactically sound. If they can take Angelus off the board with it and save the world, it is worth trying.
@@mintyfresh3533 Yep that's kinda how it is but Xander is supposed to be 17 so he's not reacting like a grown man. This is just an observation not a criticism.
Xander is reacting as though he was never TOLD that a vampire is NOT the person from before, but that is EXACTLY what Giles told him in the pilot about Jesse... That it's the monster that killed him. Xander is and always will be infatuated with Buffy and still burns that she chose Angel over him. He never lets her grieve for the lost soul that she loves he just grinds his foot into her heart as often as possible about "Angel" being a killer and "he told her so". He knows Angelus is the demon and Angel isn't he's just too self-centered to care about Buffy's feelings bc they don't revolve around him. Sure he's 17. Big woop. I was 17 once too. If my best friend lost their 1st love to murder that they actually blame themselves for...I would never have layered on the blame too. Even if I was selfishly " in love/ teenage lust" with said friend. I knew right from wrong. Just saying.
@@fanmagicks Your point about the vampire not being the same person as before and how Xander had to kill his own compassion and love for Jesse to destroy the monster that replaced him supports the position that Angelus is not Angel and should be killed. The argument that Xander represents in this episode is that while Buffy is hesitating because of her grief and hope Angelus is out there killing people, and now attempting to destroy the world. Xander disliking Angel is not the same thing as him being wrong. The stakes are just a bit higher than hurting your high school crush’s feelings.
The Buffy backstory scenes reference Joss's original Buffy movie script from the early 90s, where we see how Buffy became a slayer in the 1st place. Unfortunately, the studio decided to lean too much into the comedy elements and made the end product pretty goofy (If you ever end up seeing the film.) Thankfully, later on, Joss got to do the Buffy story his way, and we got the great TV series that you see here. (A deft mixing of comedy and drama.)
For me, this episode (like most) we don't take xanders side. He's acting like he is morally in the right, but he is just being his usual toxic self. Before angelus came about, xanders always had an issue and often said how he'd like angel to be dust. This is just a continuation of that. Since you are further along, can talk about future episodes. Xanders gets into a serious relationship with Anya, she was a soulless demon that cruelty tortured and killed countless people for much longer than angelus, but we can give her a pass now, why? She has a soul, angel has a soul...
12:12 He's Buffy's first watcher who died. The Buffy movie has the same relationship to the TV series that the Highlander movie had to its TV series. They're not canon for numerous reasons but a version of the movies' events happened in the TV series' continuity. Eventually, Whedon authorized a comic book mini-series that adapted the original movie script into the TV series canon.
Kendra's death is not only tragic due to her loss but there's also the untimely end of a unique friendship. Never before did a slayer have another slayer to confide with, to share their burden. Only Buffy and Kendra truly knew what it meant to be a slayer... and now Buffy is alone again.
I love how Willow is so supportive of With Buffy . On this episode I was torn with save or take down Angel I'm on the side to save him . Cause his actions weren't his own it was Angelus. plus Xander was out of line with Jenny's death .
A great cliffhanger! Spike really is a great character and has some fun development as the series goes on. Yes, you do feel sorry for Angel, even though he's done evil things as a vampire. 🧛♂️
So many reactors don’t know how to feel about the possibility of Angel coming back. The finale is really is the perfect ending though to this problem (heartbreaking as it is).
I'm always curious if first time viewers will remember Darla. I couldn't tell until she put it onscreen. It always amuses me a little when people say they don't want Angel back after what Angelus did. He had been Angelus before and killed before and told them so. Having it be personal to in-universe character's and viewers favorite characters doesn't change that fact. I get it, but it doesn't really change said fact that Angel's in the same psition as before _Innocence_ except if he got his soul back said viewers and characters can hate him as much as he has always hated himself for being locked inside his head with Angelus. Actually no one hates Angel as much as Angel himself. Not even Xander. Xander disliking the idea of restoring Angel's soul isn't the issue I have with him in that moment. It is how he chooses to talk to people. He even starts in on Cordelia before realizing she agrees with him. I lost all respect for Xander when he said to Giles about Jenny, "Yeah, well she's dead." This line is not only rude, but shows a personality I cannot get behind whether I agree with him or not. Plus saying that line is hypocritical of defending her against what he said in _Passion._ If he wanted to get his point across without having an attitude and without being rude he should have followed Kendra's later example when she calmly tells Buffy, "I tend to side with your friend Xander on this one. Angel should be eliminated." Buffy talks to Kendra, but everyone has issues with Xander's attitude. If Xander cannot express his opinions to his friends without attacking them, they won't care what his opinions are, with this or anything else. But Buffy does care about Kendra's opinion enough to explain things to her because Kendra is respectful in her disagreement against Buffy. Xander isn't, and that's one of his biggest follies when things don't go his way. Yes "that guy" was a watcher. Merrick was his name and he was Buffy's watcher before Giles. It's why she knew about all things that go bump in the night when she arrived in Sunnydale. The Origin story, which are either: The Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, The original script the movie was made into, and _The Origin_ comic (which combines the TV Show and movie script into a cohesiveness neither of the other do) are the extetions of seeing his character and others not seen in the show. In other words how and why Buffy know about everything before she arrived in Sunnydale. The writers wrote Kendra into her first episode knowing they planned to kill her off. Bianca Lawson was made avaliable for the time period of the three episodes she was in for the purpose of dying.
I didn't realise until afterwards that it was Darla! She looked so different! I should have paid attention to the credits in the beginning but I tend not to notice them too much as I don't like knowing who's going to be in the episode 🤭
@@julesreacts Some people just don't remember her, either. Her part was supposed to end when Willow threw holy water in her face, but that death was changed to the being hurt we saw when the writers decided Angel's backstory. Luckily, the writers mapped a good chunk of S1 out before the season started filming. Its one of the good things about it being a mid-season replacement.
Well, you're the one who wanted Dru restored 😂 Too bad we didn't get to see more of Kendra at some point in the season. I love all the flashbacks in this episode. They tell you so much about our characters and how we got here. Also, it makes it easier to understand the difference between Angel and Angelus, in that moment when his soul is first restored, and he had no idea of what Angelus had been doing for so long. Can't wait for your reaction to the second part!
The guy who approached young Buffy was, I believe, supposed to be her first watcher. In the prequel movie, she was approached this way by her watcher, Donald Sutherland. He was killed by the vampire, Rutger Hauer. LOL! I can remember the actors' names but not the characters' names.
Love the reaction as always! Just wanted to comment on why Angel wants to help. At the beginning of the episode we see him die young at the hands of a vampire. When he sees Buffy get chosen young she is being doomed to a future of being killed by vampires/demons. So when he sees her crying he emphasizes with her. He sees himself in her and understands that she basically lost her future to demons and darkness just like he did. Again love the reactions! ❤
yeah this is the start of Willow's dangerous phase...poor willow. once she opens that door...it won't close the porky guy with a mustache was a watcher actually...but it's never explained what happened to him, maybe he died or maybe he went back to England and Buffy was re-assigned to Giles.
Oh boy... Here we go! Jules do you have your tissues handy? I think this video is the closest I've ever come feeling like it was the first time I watched this episode. You edited this reallllly well❣ I got so teary with you. The writers, cast and crew did such an amazing job on this season.
Awfully late to the party, but if no one has suggested it yet, you should watch the BTVS movie (also Joss Whedon). It wasn't a big hit, but it's become a bit of a cult classic, and it provides the beginning of Buffy's calling (and with a great cast).
Such a good episode! I've always loved the flashbacks we get into both Buffy and Angel's past. Buffy was just your average teenage girl, no real worries in life (apart from arguing parents) and then BAM, her world would never be the same again. Can you imagine how you would have reacted in her situation Juliette? Finding out that not only are demons and the like very real, but also that you're the one tasked with slaying them and being the worlds protector? Such a burden for one so young. Then we have Angel. Being cursed with a soul after having cast evil upon the world for a century or so, I honestly think that if I was in Angel's shoes I would have just let the sunlight take me rather than endlessly suffer, as he did for so many years. Now Jenny's disk containing the curse has been discovered, and Willow has a shot at restoring Angel's soul, it does present a very big dilemma for the gang. The man we know as Angel is a good man and would never dream of doing evil things. But as Angelus he has committed some terrible atrocities that would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to forgive. I think that, much like yourself Juliette, most people struggle with what they think is the right thing to do here. I'm of the opinion that Angel/Angelus are not the same person and therefore Angel shouldn't be punished for the things Angelus has done. I can hardly wait to see what you make of the season finale, I already know that it will be amazing! Oh, and I almost forgot about what happened to poor Kendra! So sad!😭 I thoroughly enjoyed this one! As always, your reaction was a joy to watch and I always love to hear your thoughts about what you've just seen, and what might happen in the future. Thanks for all the work you do to bring us these videos Juliette 💜 and I hope you're having a great week!
Neil 💜 thank you so much for sharing your lovely thoughts! I agree with you that Angel/us are different. I'd almost forgotten how lovely Angel is. As Angel, I adore him. As Angelus, I despise him. It's SO hard to deal with these emotions I have for him! Seeing him again as our lovely Angel and then him being so tormented is SO sad. I know as Angelus he did terrible things... but I love Angel. Yikes. It's so well written... I love it 💜 And yes, poor Kendra! I wonder now does this mean that another slayer is born as a slayer has died? Or because there's still Buffy, they won't replace Kendra? Hmmm 🤯 Season 3 is going to be a good one, I think! Have a lovely day, Neil 💜
Any older comments are from when they are first posted on Patreon as we are a few episodes ahead there 😊 it's why I started uploading 2 x Buffy episodes a week to catch up.
Don't forget that almost no one making S1 thought that a S2 would happen. Therefore, we have seen some retconning of the pasts of Giles, Jenny and Angel for storylines sake.
First rule: Episodes that starts/ends with a monologue are good 😉 This and the next episode are still my favorite season finale. We got the first introduction to flashbacks scenes of the characters, we got Kendra back, we got a great cliffhanger. I am sure someone already put it in the comments but its time to refill your tissues 😀
Great reaction and analysis! It’s fun knowing when your guesses are correct, and when they aren’t, and looking forward to you finding out which it is. Can’t wait to see your reaction to part 2! As for Angel/Angelus I agree with Xander. Every vampire was a person first, yet no-one thinks twice about whether they should be killed. Angelus is more dangerous than most so there should be less hesitancy to kill him. I know Buffy is conflicted, but Xander is right.
Think of it this way, ensouling Angel is a net positive for the world. Angelus is too dangerous and destructive. You either kill him, or ensoul him. If you ensoul him, maybe he can continue helping fighting demons. So, a better option than just killing him imo.
It's very hard to comment on this reaction/episode without going into spoilers, even if you will have seen the next episode by now. So I'll just stick to saying that it would be easier for me to understand Xander's point of view if he had expressed it as sensitively as you did. Instead, he lashed out, accusing Buffy of wanting to handwave Jenny's murder away just so she could get her boyfriend back. As if Buffy didn't walk around with the world of guilt on her shoulders at all times.
Yes... you are so correct there. Xander still has a long way to go with regards to him being able to express himself calmly, especially when it's something as important to him as this. It also makes me feel guilty too, as a viewer!
8:42 "Can't wait to tell all my friends. They don't have a rock this big." Becoming Pt 1 can get overshadowed by Pt 2 but I love the flashbacks, especially how they're edited into the current events. Moments that were previously only in our heads are now put to screen. As Passion was intended to separate Angel from Angelus, I think this episode is here to remind us their story....their fate is intertwined. 12:11 This is Buffy's first watcher from the film... or at least a rework for the show. The film is worth a watch just to see Buffy pre-Sunnydale, but it's different... and not really for the better.
I'm on watching you and your great reactions with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Becoming part 1, i really enjoy your reactions and i hope you have a wonderful weekend,Thank You very much Juliette.🤠👋
We are really enjoying your reactions. Now would be a good time to watch the movie, although it's not officially part of the Buffyverse. The alpacas are confused about Angel also, so in typical alpaca fashion to not worry over it, they are arguing over who gets to name their stake Mr Pointy. So I role my eyes, in typical cat fashion and saunter back to work. Have a wonderful weekend.
@julesreacts and thank you for sharing with us. S3 is my personal fave (which is hard to pick because all the seasons are so good) so I can't wait until you get into those!!
I liked what you said about the difficulties with how you feel about Angel as a character. I think that's part of the beauty of this show. On the one hand, Xander is absolutely right -- Angel as Angelus is dangerous; he has killed many and is a vicious, sadistic monster. Even after restoring his soul, that doesn't take back all the harm he's caused. On the other hand, Angel is not Angelus and if he'd been in control of his mind and body (instead of the vampire demon taking over), he never would have hurt Buffy this way, or killed Miss Calendar, or done any of the things he's done. In that way, he is innocent. So the actions of Angelus aren't technically his fault. But his victims and their families and friends might not see it that way. So what should they do? Should they try to save him? Is he savable? The questions are fascinating (and heartbreaking).
I'm so torn!! It makes me think should they even bother to save Angel's soul, given that he can NEVER be happy? Hence the brilliant curse... he can have his soul, but at what cost 😔
Why do you think that the guy who told Buffy about her destiny was not a watcher? Also there no mention that Angel followed Buffy from L.A., my opinion is that he was sent to Sunnydale to wait for her (Whistler or who sent him might have access to seers). The stalking only began after she arrived there.
I can't believe we're already to the last two episodes of Season 2! I always really enjoy the episodes that have backstory for the characters in them, but RIP Kendra 😭 Looking forward to the finale on Monday!
Great analysis, Jules.💜 I have to say, your intro was like a giant teaser trailer... letting all know that by the time they see this, you will have seen the 2nd part!🤣 Man, the cruelty of it all!😜 The crew seemed to have missed another opportunity. They should be prepared, or better prepared, to face these vampires, demons, and randoms. Paring down their numbers at any opportunity. Especially when they walk right in the classroom and offer themselves.🤔 But, yes, as vile as all these vampires can be, they are, none of them, who they were as humans., and these kids should feel some remorse, whenever they put one down. so far none have chosen to become a vampire. They were all, as you say "just some random" and whilst the vampire must be put down, some sympathy should be part and parcel, fro the human they once were."🤨 Have a very pleasant weekend (they are enjoyable, but come and go so fast) Be well, and I'll be seeing you in your next! looking forward to it! 🤗💜
You are very right, Tom! I love that you're watching this alongside me for the first time, so we are both going into it without any prior knowledge and with no idea how it ends! I love it 🥰 I am sad that my Saturday is almost over and I don't have any dinner plans for tonight yet... I'm on a waiting list for a restaurant but my backup plan is a takeaway shop which has, apparently, great chips so I'm sorted either way 🤣 I hope you have a lovely weekend! Just to give you a heads up so there's no surprises, expect an X Files episode tomorrow 🤣💜
Oh, Jules,💜 that is what I was expecting today, so I am prepared. 😉 It is a special one, in a couple ways, but I will wait until tomorrow to speak of it. Good luck with your reservation, or enjoy those Chips!😋💜
Reservation confirmation has just come through... but now I was looking forward to the chips 🤣 Ooh I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts about tomorrow's episode! The X Files, when available, will generally be on the Sunday ☺️ I haven't edited the one after, but I've watched it so... at least it's part way done 🥹
Isn't that the way it always seems to go. Wanting this, or that, getting one, but really wanting the other, mostly because you've sort of come to terms with not getting the first choice. If it disappoint, get some takeaway chips on the way home!😜 Whatever you decide, Jules, have great fun!💜
Wooo! here we go! I like so many others are right there with you, we love Angel and want him back, but absolutly hate Angelus, it's characteristic of the outstanding writing in this series. I always loved that they reveiled to us that the Powers That Be had a plan to unite Angel and Buffy from the start, by now you've seen part two as well, hope you kept the tissues handy, can't wait to join you Monday to see the next reaction!
Hi Jules. The one reminder that the vampire near the beginning was Darla, is that you telling us that, or do you have an editor who put that in for you? The reason why I ask is, because after watching a lot of reactions and other UA-cam stuff, it seems that a lot of channels (including Steven He and MxR Plays) have female editors, which I find awesome (especially with apparently there being more males than females on UA-cam), so I was interested if you did it yourself. Have a great weekend, preferably with loved ones around you, have fun with the next episode and stay healthy.
I do all the editing myself! So if I write things like that, it's just me 😊 Have a lovely weekend yourself! I'm about to head out to the shops hehe yay 💜
The "random person" who approached Buffy at Hemery High School in LA was her first watcher, Merrik, who was later killed. These events occurred in the original film by Fran Rubel Kuzui, who is credited as the series' producer, although she never did anything about it. The film's original screenplay, written by Joss Whedon, is considered the prequel to the series.
Darn it! Friday night gaming session in full swing ... playing Battletech at the moment ... and Jules drops the end of Buffy Season 2! A real conundrum ... okay ... glass of wine and Jules ... ... ... I can headshot Kurita Mechs later :D EDIT: Oh aye, it's two parter! Tease  By the way it strikes me that you might not know that there is a movie of Buffy, with Kristy Swanson, that tells the tale of how she got to be the Slayer.
I know of the movie but I've not watched it... I really should! I hope you enjoyed your gaming session! Today I've been playing Fortnite and I might buy Dredge as I've been wanting it for a while 💜
@@julesreacts I had not heard of Dredge before - what a novel concept for a game :) I'm more a 4X/FPS/MMO/RPG fellow myself but time is slowing me down, such that some of the quicker paced stuff just leaves me for dead these days
Let's lay it all out: Angel (with soul) is a valuable asset in the fight against evil. He has actively risked himself to save others on multiple occasions. In a pure numbers game, if he continues, at some point he will have saved more people than Angelus killed. However, Angel is a grenade & the curse is his pin. The question is whether the potential benefits of Angel as a force for good outweigh the potential dangers of an unleashed Angelus. There is no "right" answer, both courses of action could have unforeseen & tragic consequences. Perhaps if you kill Angel then someone you love dies because he's not there to save them, but equally perhaps that person dies because you opt to put his soul back & keep him alive. I tend to come down to the notion of "do the next right thing" and restoring Angel's soul seems like the "right" (in the moral sense, at least) thing to do, although killing him certainly does seem the more sensible/pragmatic option.
Always the best moral dilemmas in fiction. The ones with multiple "good" solutions and no way to know. Just as with real life, you have to simply follow your own moral compass and hope.
Angel and Angelus are _not_ separate entities. Dru alone should be evidence that the human that was and the vampire they become are one in the same, just altered. Otherwise Dru as a vampire wouldn't be insane, as she wouldn't have the emotional torment Angel inflicted on her when she was human.
It is explained that they are separate entities, but the demon gets the human's memories as they are kept within the brain of the body they now inhabit. Like using a computer after the previous person did not log out of before they left - all the info is still there.
@@psychokitty9325 it's what the anecdotal line that Giles and Buffy have said, a couple of times, yet the show disproves that in actual representation repeatedly. Again, Dru being a prime example at this point in the series. At the most basic level, "I think therefore I am" is about as clear cut as it gets. If someone has all of their memories from when they were human, all of their personality traits - literally has their brain, but no capacity for guilt, and no indication of some "other" entity; it's disingenuous to suggest they're _not_ that person. A more apt comparison would be a compute that has had some of its hardware replaced, a bit of malicious software installed, but it's the same hard drive, it's the same computer, just corrupted. Same software, slightly different case; with a taste for blood. From their own perspective they even see themselves as the same person. They talk of their human past in the first person; and have no other concept of self. Dru talked about _her_ mother, _her_ family that Angel killed - not her "host". It's arguably a necessary lie the likes of Watchers and Slayers have to buy into, for the very reason Buffy couldn't kill Angel when he first lost his soul - she saw the the man she loved and couldn't divorce herself from that and do what needed to be done. Even in this episode, she holds out hope of getting him back. Yeah, it could help save the world, but the real motivation is to "save" him - if Willow could just managed to run the Soul patch; which doesn't necessarily get rid of the malware, but at least puts it in a vault. But in her hope, Buffy's hesitation has lead to people dying. Had Buffy truly bought into the idea that this wasn't "really" Angel, Jenny and a lot of other people would still be alive. It's a tool to dehumanize them, and make it easier to get the job done killing them; which in the vast majority of the cases is 100% the correct mindset to have.
@@stargazer1682while I would never take any information from the watchers as unimpeachable truth, as they've proven themselves far to unreliable and frankly they have no real way of verifying their explanation of vampirism and it appears to simply be what they perceive through observation over the years, I also don't believe that the example of Drusilla(or any vampire) and her perception of memories can be used as an absolute proof to the true nature of vampirism and souls. It's hard to get too deep into the conversation without a mountain of spoilers, but I find that those questions are still open and probably always will be. The the nature of memories and perception , vampirism and the soul, these are all things that will be explored through the run of the show, with differing examples suggesting different answers, but never really giving a final, unquestionable truth on the matter. Drusilla speaking as if those memories are her own, even if "vamp" Drusilla is actually a different entity, doesn't decide the issue. If those memories are stored in a brain, and a different life force occupies that brain, and perceives those memories just as if they had experienced them themselves, I would imagine it would feel natural to speak of them in such a manner.
My kids were watching this ep for the first time the other day and I heard my son say to his brother - 'They found the thumb drive that looks like a save icon'. I've never felt so old.
OMG. That is amazing 🤣🤣
"who's that guy. He's not a watcher!"
Yup.
Buffy's first watcher. I believe the movie was retconned to fit with the show, but Buffy's introduction to her powers featured several burned down school buildings, lots of dead people and.... the death of her watcher.
There's a reason she behaves as she does in the pilot, and this is providing just a little more context to that ^^
Ah, nice! I still need to watch the original movie 🥹
@@julesreacts
It's honestly worth a watch, even if you'll see why Whedon was so desperate to start over.
A bit of a flawed gem.
@@julesreacts Just so you know, the original movie never happened according to the universe of the show. It's not canon.
and
(mockingly at Angel) Someone wasn't worrrrthy. 😆🤣
Spike has quickly become one of my favourites 😍 I love his cheeky nature!
POOR Kendra
Great episode and part 2 is even better.
It's funny, for all Angelus is evil, it's Dru walking into the library looking so in control and focused that always makes me shiver. She's magnificent and oh so terrifying. Great first part to this series finale. Can't wait to see your reaction to the final part.
Drusila is amazing... I would never want to be in front of her as she'd kill me in an instant, but what an incredible instant that would be 😅💜
Joss Whedon actually sought out Juliet Landau to take the role of Drusilla, after being impressed with her performance in Ed Wood.
"Im so glad Kendra stayed" Im not. RIP Kendra :(
😔😔 I wish she didn't now that THAT happened...
Loved reading your words! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It really does help to know what other people are thinking 💜
Season 3 has 100% on rotten tomatoes (96%audience score)
In Los Angeles, that was Buffy's first watcher, Merrick. Also, Sunnydale is in California as well (three hours north of LA).
That guy is Merrick. He was Buffy's first Watcher. He died in their battle against Lothos (Buffy's first Big Bad from the movie (non-canon) or prequel comic (canon).
12:11
That guy is Buffy's first Watcher, Merrick!
@@julesreacts maybe because each moment Angel has with his soul restored is a chance for him to atone a bit for the sins of Angelus?
@@davidsandberg6179 I think that fuels the misery though, because that means he has to take on the blame of Angelus's crimes, and he really shouldn't
Dru bagged a Slayer?! Good for her!
🤣😭😭
Though not from Kendra's perspective, I suppose.
And this is just the warm-up for next episode. :)
4:01 One of my favourite lines of Buffy: "This isn't an orgy, people. This is a classroom." :D
It's stated by Jenny's Uncle. They don't serve justice. They serve vengeance. Greedy revenge was the goal.
Becoming part 1 - the becoming of Angel. Becoming part 2 - the becoming of Buffy. TV at its best - chef's kiss!
" You'll see what I mean" that whistler monologue at the end was everything to me back then as a adolescent teen.
Oh!! That's actually so funny 🤣 I think I forgot that the fellow mentioned the thing about paperweights haha
There are very few one note characters in all this
I've liked Spike in the past because he does feel love and when you least expect it he will honour a deal.
Love Spike "Someone wasn't Worthy."
Mr Pointy
Spike is one of my favourite characters now! He really came through at the end there, but only just enough 😅 he didn't really do the teaming up that I thought he might, but it was good enough!
Yes he teamed up but for his own selfish monstrous reasons. Once that was done he was gone. Though first time watching I thought concern for the slayer and hate of angelus might have been enough to get him to intervene. However it all let the Hero , Buffy, save herself. @@julesreacts
Jules, watching Angel spying on Buffy: He's got something up his... dark sleeve.
Heee. Well put! ❤😄
🤭💜
Kendra got done dirty, gone too soon
@@julesreacts You too!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I love all the flashbacks in this episode and it's all setup for the finale now. I hope you had the tissues handy!!! Sad to see that kendra was brought back just to get killed off. RIP Kendra
Kendra was such a great character! It's such a shame to have lost her so soon 😔
111 pages left in the book of Buffy and we have loved Jules acceptance of the series we love. When you love a show, you want people you respect to love it as well and we are blessed to be in this together.
Oh thank you!! Yes I absolutely love it 💜
Angel didn't do anything, when Angel was turned in to a vampire he died and a demon was born Angelus has the same memories but he is not Angel.
Angelus may be a brutal monster, but as a priest he is quite forgiving in handing out light penances.
I completely agree with you!! I'm a Buffy and Angel girl, I can't help it.. their romance is beautiful. But yes, Xander is right. And that hurts 😔
Ah yes, I still haven't watched the movie! I might have to sit down and watch it at some point 🥹
Kendra's death is not only tragic due to her loss but there's also the untimely end of a unique friendship. Never before did a slayer have another slayer to confide with, to share their burden. Only Buffy and Kendra truly knew what it meant to be a slayer... and now Buffy is alone again.
It was hard to see Kendra killed by Dru....She was a Good character...=))
I didn't think that would happen 😥 Such a vicious killing... Very Dru.
Honestly, I thought they should be putting souls in every vampire possible
Ms. Jules, in the intro: "I am full of anticipation for what is to come."
Ah, well. You think you know what is to come. You aren't remotely prepared.
I never am 🥹
I love how Willow is so supportive of With Buffy . On this episode I was torn with save or take down Angel I'm on the side to save him . Cause his actions weren't his own it was Angelus. plus Xander was out of line with Jenny's death .
A great cliffhanger! Spike really is a great character and has some fun development as the series goes on. Yes, you do feel sorry for Angel, even though he's done evil things as a vampire. 🧛♂️
As an Angel fan, it is quite a predicament that we are in! I've never felt so conflicted 😅
All of us who remember once being human feel sympathy for Angel.
I guess Dru is just too powerful for her own good 🤣 she is amazing, though! I do like her a lot!
@@julesreacts She's great!
The guy who approached young Buffy was, I believe, supposed to be her first watcher. In the prequel movie, she was approached this way by her watcher, Donald Sutherland. He was killed by the vampire, Rutger Hauer. LOL! I can remember the actors' names but not the characters' names.
Merrick
Love the reaction as always! Just wanted to comment on why Angel wants to help. At the beginning of the episode we see him die young at the hands of a vampire. When he sees Buffy get chosen young she is being doomed to a future of being killed by vampires/demons. So when he sees her crying he emphasizes with her. He sees himself in her and understands that she basically lost her future to demons and darkness just like he did. Again love the reactions! ❤
Thank you, Lindsay 🥰
yeah this is the start of Willow's dangerous phase...poor willow. once she opens that door...it won't close
the porky guy with a mustache was a watcher actually...but it's never explained what happened to him, maybe he died or maybe he went back to England and Buffy was re-assigned to Giles.
Oh boy... Here we go! Jules do you have your tissues handy? I think this video is the closest I've ever come feeling like it was the first time I watched this episode. You edited this reallllly well❣ I got so teary with you. The writers, cast and crew did such an amazing job on this season.
Heather, thank you!! You are a beautiful soul 💜 I hope you've had a lovely weekend so far!
It's her original watcher. Most of the Kristy Swanson was retconned in the show
Awfully late to the party, but if no one has suggested it yet, you should watch the BTVS movie (also Joss Whedon).
So sad!😭
I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
I love it 💜
And yes, poor Kendra! I wonder now does this mean that another slayer is born as a slayer has died? Or because there's still Buffy, they won't replace Kendra? Hmmm 🤯
Season 3 is going to be a good one, I think! Have a lovely day, Neil 💜
This reaction was posted a few hours ago. Why do these comments say they are a month old?
Any older comments are from when they are first posted on Patreon as we are a few episodes ahead there 😊 it's why I started uploading 2 x Buffy episodes a week to catch up.
Don't forget that almost no one making S1 thought that a S2 would happen. Therefore, we have seen some retconning of the pasts of Giles, Jenny and Angel for storylines sake.
First rule: Episodes that starts/ends with a monologue are good 😉
This and the next episode are still my favorite season finale.
I definitely agree with you! As much as it hurts, Xander is right... it can be easy to overlook facts when love for a character blinds us 😔
Think of it this way, ensouling Angel is a net positive for the world.
Wow, you were sounding... REALLY excited about the disk. 😏
YES!! Finally 🙌
The beginning of one of the greatest season finales ever! Looking forward to P.t. 2...
Ahm... SPOILER!
Season 5?
OH! You got me once again, Jules💜, but fresh coffee goes with everything, so let's see what you and the crew get up to here!😛
Tom 💜 I hope you enjoy your coffee! It's Buffy time ☺️
Great reaction! looking forward for part II and to see your reaction when you see if your predictions or expectations were right or wrong
What an episode. Anybody watching this finale should have tissues ready which is the case with most season finales of this show.
My box of 100 tissues is always right in front of me 🤣😭
here we go! prep yer tissues!
Gonna need 'em 😭😭
I'm on watching you and your great reactions
with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Becoming
part 1, i really enjoy your reactions and i hope
you have a wonderful weekend,Thank You
very much Juliette.🤠👋
6:00-6:22 ;)
Oh... Julies saying; "I'm so glad Kendra stayed".... Be careful what you wish for in this show...😟
I have learnt this the hard way 😭😭
We are really enjoying your reactions.
Mr Pointy is the best name for a stake 😅
I hope you have a lovely weekend, Cat! Do something nice with your menagerie of beautiful furry creatures 🥰
Can't wait to see your reaction to the finale. You're quickly becoming my fave Buffy reactor. So excited!
Thank you so much! That is so lovely of you to say. I'm so glad you're enjoying the episodes 💜
@julesreacts and thank you for sharing with us. S3 is my personal fave (which is hard to pick because all the seasons are so good) so I can't wait until you get into those!!
Your almost Done :P cant wait to see youre reaction to season 3 :P
One more episode and then season 3 🥹
@@julesreacts 🤠
Eeeeek! Just so excited to watch these two episodes with you ❤
SMG may run like a girl, but what a running
Fathers day and then Becoming.
Oof.
Nothing but pain here 🥹
I loved this show. I found it dramatic and funny, but despite the horror theme, I rarely found it frightening.
Drusilla scared me.
Drusila is incredible isn't she! Terrifying and beautiful, all rolled into one.
I haven't seen the original movie, so I made a mistake in my guess there! I know he is a watcher now 😊
Sorry Mrs Jules I took a nap and just woke up barley watching this episode lol 😂! Have a great weekend!
I can't believe we're already to the last two episodes of Season 2! I always really enjoy the episodes that have backstory for the characters in them, but RIP Kendra 😭 Looking forward to the finale on Monday!
It's been going so much quicker since I started uploading two episodes per week! I'm so excited 🥰
You're gonna make us wait the weekend for your reaction to part 2! How rude!!! lol😂
I'm SO darn rude 🤣
Cannot wait to see your reaction to Part 2!!!
Awesome video as always!
Thank you so much!!
Great analysis, Jules.💜 I have to say, your intro was like a giant teaser trailer... letting all know that by the time they see this, you will have seen the 2nd part!🤣 Man, the cruelty of it all!😜
The crew seemed to have missed another opportunity. They should be prepared, or better prepared, to face these vampires, demons, and randoms. Paring down their numbers at any opportunity. Especially when they walk right in the classroom and offer themselves.🤔
But, yes, as vile as all these vampires can be, they are, none of them, who they were as humans., and these kids should feel some remorse, whenever they put one down. so far none have chosen to become a vampire. They were all, as you say "just some random" and whilst the vampire must be put down, some sympathy should be part and parcel, fro the human they once were."🤨
Have a very pleasant weekend (they are enjoyable, but come and go so fast) Be well, and I'll be seeing you in your next! looking forward to it! 🤗💜
You are very right, Tom! I love that you're watching this alongside me for the first time, so we are both going into it without any prior knowledge and with no idea how it ends! I love it 🥰
I am sad that my Saturday is almost over and I don't have any dinner plans for tonight yet... I'm on a waiting list for a restaurant but my backup plan is a takeaway shop which has, apparently, great chips so I'm sorted either way 🤣
I hope you have a lovely weekend! Just to give you a heads up so there's no surprises, expect an X Files episode tomorrow 🤣💜
Oh, Jules,💜 that is what I was expecting today, so I am prepared. 😉
It is a special one, in a couple ways, but I will wait until tomorrow to speak of it.
Good luck with your reservation, or enjoy those Chips!😋💜
Reservation confirmation has just come through... but now I was looking forward to the chips 🤣
Ooh I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts about tomorrow's episode!
If it disappoint, get some takeaway chips on the way home!😜
Whatever you decide, Jules, have great fun!💜
Wooo!
Part 2 is rough 😭😭 they REALLY want to keep breaking our hearts, don't they?!
You should check out the Buffy movie ❤
I really do need to one day 🥰
So if I write things like that, it's just me 😊
Have a lovely weekend yourself!
The film's original screenplay, written by Joss Whedon, is considered the prequel to the series.
good reaction
Darn it! Friday night gaming session in full swing ... playing Battletech at the moment ... and Jules drops the end of Buffy Season 2! A real conundrum ... okay ... glass of wine and Jules ... ... ... I can headshot Kurita Mechs later :D
EDIT: Oh aye, it's two parter!
WATCH BUFFY THE MOVIE for more of Joss's original origin story of Buffy becoming a slayer, and burning down the gym.
Thank you! I will watch it at some point for sure 😊
@@bad71able I mean, Dru is definitely the tip of the ice berg; and like you said, anything else is spoilers. The rest I wholeheartedly disagree with.
Impressive reacting on this episode, Juliette 💜 I'm the 400th liker 😊.
Aww yay! That's amazing, Clintzor! Thank you for being here and for your incredible support 💜
