james marsters, who played spike, literally burned himself and had to go to the hospital. he was so desperate for work at the time then when they asked him if he had any experience with fire stunts, he lied and said that he had.
Spike and Joyce... the most hilariously weird yet awesome relationship on the show. I love them. 😄 "Well, [Druscilla] sounds very unreasonable." Lol. Supportive mom Joyce, even with Spike. ❤
The reason given for the Cordelia death fake out was to make audiences realize how much they have actually grown to like/love her as a character in contrast with most viewer’s feelings towards her in the earlier episodes of the series. Have to say, it worked pretty well.
Spike isn’t just a vampire, he’s almost an energy vampire. He comes into town miserable and without direction, and his actions (on purpose or inadvertently) cause everyone involved to be miserable as he leaves, cheery and revitalized
i really need to get the backstory book about Spike, Angelus, Drusilla and Darla...it is set before BTVS...some of the stuff from it is shown on TV series...small clips...but it's basically about when they were travelling together in the old days.
James Marsters acting skills is what saved him. He was meant to be a semi long monster of the week type thing that would get it in the end but he had such a massive fan base they kept him reccurring.
Man I loved your reaction to this one. Hit every beat I wanted. The writers must have had SO much fun with the funeral at the end KNOWING how deep they were cutting the audience. The fear, denial, anger, relief and more anger... I remember it well ^^
Spike genuinely enjoying Joyce's company and having (I presume) no intentions of actually hurting her, but being thrilled to use the opportunity to do some top tier screwing with Angel, will never not be one of my favorite things 😂😂
I love watching reactors get to this episode because it makes them realize how much they like Cordelia even more than they actually knew they did. Also, Cordelia's injury was actually based on an accident that Charisma Carpenter had when she was a little girl & fell into an open pool being built & was impaled by a rebar pipe in the exact same spot. She even still has the scar to this day.
Thoughts about this episode. 1. Was it playing fair with the audience to cut to "Cordelia's funeral"? Nope. Was it worth doing? Yep. Why? Because it shows the audience how much they've come to care about all the characters... even Cordelia. Many viewers hated Cordelia at the beginning, but by this point they are in a panic when they think she might die. 2. Spike rolls into town, and when he leaves, there are NO couples left in Sunnydale. All three main teen ships go down. All the way down. They sunk. They're rotting at the bottom of the ocean. It's the triple shipwreck episode.
"I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." Heeee. Great line, Spike. Though I hated how vicious he was being with Willow (nobody should make Willow cry, damn it!)... you've got to admit, Spike is a very entertaining character. 🙂
In regards your viewers' reactions to your reaction to the Cordelia / funeral scene let me quote Tech Sergeant Chen in the movie "Galaxy Quest" - "It's the simple things in life you treasure."
fun fact... Spike was meant to be killed off after 4 episodes but was so well received by audiences the execs on buffy ordered Joss Whedon to not kill him and bring him back as a regular.
I love how spikes entrance was nearly identical, aside from him falling out of his car. Those people must be pissed, they probably paid a bit for that sign replacement

@@volourn9764 Interesting. I've never known anyone who didn't like Spike. Everyone loves a good villain, and a good villain redemption. Plus he has way more personality than boring "Angel". This episode was great all around. The drama, the comedy, the love, it was all on point. The writers giveth and they taketh away. Everyone falls for that fake out of Cordy's death. But hey, we now know you love her. Aww 🤗 Charisma Carpenter did have an accident when she was a little girl during construction outside her home and a rebar did go through her in the same spot her character had the injury. She did end up with a scar because of it. But what some people don't know is that paranormal things have happened to the actress for most of her entire life. Charisma has said that she felt someone had pushed her from behind and she fell onto a rebar and caused that injury to her but said no one was there when it happened. If you look her up on YT, you'll see a few vids of her explaining her experiences with the paranormal and find out she's had close calls with her life a couple times. Pretty scary stuff. James Marsters, Spike, did burn his hand and screamed in pain during that scene where he wakes up with the sun on him. They kept that in and that's what you saw.
Hah, congrats, you've now joined a 20+ year lineage of fans getting got by that funeral scene - it happens to the best of us... And it happens to the rest of us :). Great episode this one, lots of big moments but some fun little moments too, like Joyce and Spike (a character who, agreed, can be scary, pathetic, funny and heartfelt all within the same scene, partly due to the writing and partly just James Marsters having acting chops to spare and then some).
This reaction was gold. You are a delight to watch. Glad you kept in Giles' line about being on the hellmouth too long - for some reason it's one of my all time faves. 'Til next time.
Spike the greatest character in The Buffyverse! Was great to see him back here. Lover's Walk another super episode keeping up the great quality of S3. All the relationships here are having problems Angel/Buffy, Spike/Drusilla and the Oz/Willow/Xander/Cordelia situation. Spikes monologue was very true regarding Buffy and Angel he really nailed it there. You can really see how the writing is now much more intense in that it really delves into the Psyche of each characters emotions. Season 3 is just banger after banger after banger!
James Marsters(always mix my spelling with the person who play cyclops in x men) was one of the only characters i liked in Smallville/the runaways lol...two different shows and he was the only person that was ok for me, also great in supernatural and although i did not like the script, he was great in Torchwood too
Really? I liked smallville a lot but his character there isn't great. I mean his fitire self from the last season is OK but the best non Spike James Marsters character is Charlamagne Bolivar from Andromeda.
Spike is bearing his soul to Joyce and you're worried about him hurting her? He didn't even "vamp out" behind her back! Spike: "You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love till it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other till it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. **Love isn't brains, children, it's blood** ...blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." Spike is hitting VERY hard this episode. Also, one of the greatest monologues ever given. Oz and Cordy walking in on Xander and Willow...Yup. It hurts. Spike: "...I'll find her, wherever she is, torture her, Until she Likes me again..." I mean, that's pretty on point for the Spike and Dru relationship. The "Cordy Death Troll"...Yup...they went there. I told you before, "Joss is Evil. It is Known." Buffy: "...But I can't fool myself, or Spike for some reason..." That's actually pretty profound coming from Buffy.
14:35 - Not only cutting to a random funeral...but one where one of the mourners looks EXACTLY like Buffy from behind...(I mean, did they actually use SMG's stunt double for that scene?

One of the things the show did very badly was class examination i.e how class effects social mobility etc. One thing is that Willow is presented as a computer science/magical prodigy yet there is no mention of how she is paying for her computer/software/internet connection/magic books and supplies. Yes its pointed out both her parents a pyschologists on tour but she is never presented as being rich the way cordelia or harmony is. LOL the magic Shop is cursed...everytime it gets a new owner they end up dead...or the shop ends up ruined XD contrary to what you miht think Spike is too depressed to hurt people...he just wants Dru back. part of the reason Dru has left him actually is because he's gone all soft...Dru is very perceptive...crazy...but perceptive.

The summer before this season came out, there was a poll about the death of Mrs Calendar, they asked which Scooby would you have rather died instead. Cordy won the poll by a lot, some of even wrote essays on why she should be the one (not being missed was one of the top choices, being in the way of Willow and Xander was the other), we never took Cordy for granted again, nor rooted for them to get together.... This is why people warn you about saying things out loud, you want to happen.
