A wise man once said "You don't go to listen to the concert, you go to see the show".....and Pink Floyd certainly delivers. I was at the Pulse concert and Pink Floyd did this song. Their whole performance is a visual and auditory experience. As a musician (drummer) their auxiliary percussionist is a show in it of himself. He definitely adds to Nick Mason's drumming perfection. Best concert of my lifetime....bar none!

I'm not sure about that, but this is the greatest live show ever. I saw it live, I've seen a lot of concerts after that and it was the best. Except... maybe Roger Waters' Wall XDDD

Sometimes it's just hard to explain simplistic genius! So instead of trying to explain it just enjoy it... it's the way I sometimes enjoy a simplistic Mozart piece.

Putting aside all the great musicianship and production, both musicaly & visualy, it is Gilmour's clear voice and perfect diction that wins it for me. So concise & distinct. You can hear every word, even with that huge sound behind him. I personally consider this solo better than 'Comfortably Numb'. That may be just because we've all heard that one so many times.

When I first heard this song live in concert, it was on David Gilmour's solo tour in 2016. I had only become a Gilmour/Pink Floyd fan a couple of years before, and it was the first time I'd heard 'Sorrow' anywhere. I immediately fell in love with it, similar to what you expressed here. I am not a musician, so I couldn't explain why in technical terms. I think what sold it for me was actually the combination of all of the musicians coming together by the end to ride out the song. Everything just gelled and on top of it, you could tell by watching the musicians that they knew it, too. (I also have a weakness for '80s arena rock and guitar solos, so that could have something to do with it). :) Gilmour is my favorite rock guitarist, in part because of the emotion he conveys while still keeping his solos musical. There is an intensity and darkness to this song; an urgency. Gilmour's guitar soloing is like another voice. There was a conscientiousness to this performance that, at least in my view, put it over the top.

This is a perfect example of the Gestalt Theory in psychology: The whole (the entirety; the complete picture, etc) is larger than the sum of its parts.
This song was the album closer of their 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason. . . The four tracks before it were nothing notable (two of the tracks were 'experimental' ones in which it was just Gilmour's voice mic'd into the keyboard two decades before the birth of autotune). . .
My older brother bought the album on vinyl. . The first track on side B, the first of the four mentioned above, was !istenable, then came the first of the two 'autotune' tracks, an instrumental, the second 'autotune' track, then Sorrow. .
Like you said in the review, there was something about this song which prevented me from lifting the needle after the first song (or even avoiding listening to side B in the first place) . . . Something about the song draws one back time after time. . .
Every performer does their part well. . . Nothing jumps out at you. . . Yet the cohesion of each part makes for an experience that speaks to you (or your soul) in a way you can't explain
. . . As the title of the album suggests, I think you had a Momentary Lapse of Reason. . . 😉
. . . And even if you can admit to yourself that you would consider listening to the song even once more without having to review it, that says a lot about how this song affected you. . .
Great review, as usual. . .

I can tell you...I'll coin a phrase I heard when a sports reporter was talking to the great golfer Jack Nicklaus over how emotional he was that Secretariat won the record race at Belmont and the triple crown in 1973 (that still stands today). "Jack, don't you understand, you spent your whole life trying to be the pinnacle of perfection in your sport. What you witnessed today with Secretariat was just that: PERFECTION. My friend, what you just have witnessed by all on this song is just that- Perfection!

    Update
Forget into mention, you had a very unique analysis getting into chops, lighting. I like that you recognized that it was not massive guitar chops like a Satriani or Vai, but it still got you.
    I liked it B/C
    - Its not one thing
    - Intro, Exit - Feedback musicality
    - Production quality and the bass filled out the bottom amazingly (Lowwww)
    - Melody, Hooks
    - Everyone laid in with the lights accenting
    - Stage Lighting of Pules is spiritual
    - The GROOVE (Head Bopper)
It was captured into this production. Grab Momentary Lapse of Reason LP. Studio version is surprisingly decent.

Gilmour is one of a kind, sure he could shred but it's not his style. Pink Floyd is one of the few bands that combine rock, theater, and story telling. Now include Syd Barrett and Roger Waters history. . There is no other band that come to mind,Floyd is in a class of there own. You half to know their history to understand . Take care !!!

Oh yes, for me driving music for sure. I recall driving my black MR2 in the late '80s, fast, late at night, with this song on loud. Street lights passing overhead, across the hood, and shadows sweeping through the interior, with that driving groove - lost in thought. 30 something years later I can still picture it. Loved it.
I remember someone, from a punk band or new wave, asking about Pink Floyd, probably right after The Wall came out, "What makes Pink Floyd's music sound so...'important'?" Can't explain it either, but it is great.

I'm pretty sure it's the bass, it drives the composition all the way through, from start to finish.
I think because the rendition is so busy, so many things going on, it's so easy to overlook that bass, grinding away in the background !
Nice reaction, No 200 on the 👍.
Also, the bass riff is a Tony Levin masterpiece, don't come much better than that 😉

But much like Bruce wthe the e street band as great as Gilmour is in think it is the entire band and production that makes pink floyd pink floyd. Lol. Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Glad I requested it. You made it fun to watch as always. Stay awesome

Great reaction, David. Some reactors just look at their feet, but you connect with the audience. Your tambour changes reflect the mood of your reaction, and more reactors could make use of your mastery of the pig. You're like the Tuomas Holopainen of reactors- a reaction Admiral. I'd give this an 8.8

I suspect the reason may have been "tone". I find this a lot with Pink Floyd's music. It's like the tone somehow wakes up a distant emotional memory that, as you alluded to, you can't put your finger on. I find their music quite unique in that its pace gives you the room and space to not only listen to the music and watch the show, but also THINK along to the music. I find myself reflecting and contemplating to their music all the time. Just a thought though..... it may have been something completely different that "connected" you to this song

Sorrow is definitely my favorite post-Waters Floyd song. Gilmour’s absolute precision guitar style almost feels like a second vocal track. It’s unique and quintessential Gilmour. I know you’re not a lyrics guy, but the lyrics are very profound and add so much to the song for those of us who are lyric obsessed. Just a great overall tune. So glad I was able to catch 2 of these shows. I was on the field at Yankees stadium, seated just left of the giant disco ball, the first time. It was a phenomenal experience.

It's the bass and the drums.
And the fact they are just one really tight musical machine with sooo many details and little variations. (You got there in the end, by saying it was probably the combination of everything fitting so well)
And you can't explain it because genius can't be explained.
By the way.... try this on maximum volume in your car....

You're frustrated because you can't pinpoint the reason for liking the song, why? You like it, you don't need a reason, especially with Pink Floyd. It's the whole production that's impressive, the sum of all the parts, I think that's prevalent with a lot of Pink Floyds music/performances.
The sum total of all the parts,.. Guy Pratt is a great bassist, Nick Mason, although he's not considered a great drummer like a Buddy Rich or a Neil Peart, but he is a rock solid drummer that knows what sounds good, and he understands what fans want to hear from a drummer. And again, his drums sound so good!
The sound of Masons drums are like the rest of Pink Floyds instruments onstage,.. they sound great. This whole Pulse Concert production is phenomenal imo. As for the lazers, I agree with you about too much of it sometimes, but not this show, and remember this is 1994.
As for David Gilmour, he's one of my favorite guitarists, because of the feel and emotion he creates with his bends, and runs and pauses, letting the note breath a bit. He's not flashy, he doesn't run around the stage jumping up and down in a glitter jumpsuit! He says sooo much in a simple Pentatonic run, than most guitarists who plat a Bajillion notes a second,... and he does it in a tee shirt and jeans,... my kind of guy.
Gilmours style is a feel, a grove. The rise and fall mixed with pauses, and phrasing in his soloing is captivating! There's a purposefulness and emphasis in his soloing, and again, he knows what sounds great to the listener, and he delivers. Using 3 Hiwatt DR103 heads and those Wem cabs help him create his unique sound, and of course his fingers!
He always has 3 of the 100 watt Hiwatt heads onstage, two in use, the third is a spare. And he seems to have a very complex effects rack and huge array of stand alone pedals. Pink Floyd stage alone is a massive structure that must've been a logistic nightmare for the crew. Not to mention all the stuff/equipment ON that enormous stage.
His choice of a Strat instead of a humbucking loaded guitar, is perfect match for him imo. Stratocasters, (single coils), can be a much more expressive guitar in the right hands, Gilmour has the right hands.

While the Pulse version is good - @david heretic should really take a watch and listen to the one from the previous tour (Delicate Sound of Thunder). Not to mention the lighting was much better (yeah I love the VARI*LITE pods floating around and target the talent... sue me! lol)

But, you know, this is one of the few songs, if any, that you've not...analyzed musically!? Maybe your enjoyment was, somehow, non-musical? hmm...the visuals were pretty captivating...perhaps distracting...?

With all the PF you've reviewed, especially the Pulse tour ones, you may have noticed the plainly different structures between the Roger Waters tracks and the post-Roger ones, from "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and the "Division Bell (all Gilmour and Wright, and much of the lyric content is provided by David's wife, Polly Samson). Most of the last two albums consist of hopeful and/or inward seeking content, as opposed to the vitriol and scathing social commentary put forth by Roger on the last 3 or 4 (great albums to be sure, but far darker in tone), with "The Final Cut" being basically a Waters solo album prior to leaving (I never listen to it at all). If you get the urge, please react to the Pulse performance of "Keep Talking": ua-cam.com/video/AVzM6cS1iME/v-deo.html

Absolutely. Les Claypool has/had a 4 string with one, so did Bootsie Collins and Stanley Clarke. John Pattitucci had a Yamaha 6-string with the bridge cut in half. The top 3 strings (B, E, A) of the bridge were regular, while the bottom 3 strings (D, G, C) of the bridge had a Floyd Rose floating tremolo system installed on it. It was wicked.

Interesting...I don't want to come across as a troll, because I love Pink Floyd, but this isn't one of my favourite songs. Sure, it is one of the better ones from AMLOR, but the whole album is weak in my opinion. I find the song a bit boring, just not very dynamic. That said, it is still much better than songs from lesser bands.
